Rams expect Stafford to play in Week 11 vs. Saints
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is expected to clear concussion protocol before Sunday's matchup against the New Orleans Saints, head coach Sean McVay said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop.Stafford missed the team's Week 10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals due to being in concussion protocol. He was a full participant in Wednesday's session, McVay added.John Wolford started in Stafford's place last Sunday, completing 66.7% of his passes for 212 yards with one touchdown and one interception.Stafford put up pedestrian numbers amid a disappointing 2022 campaign for the Rams. The veteran threw eight touchdowns to eight interceptions, and his 84.9 passer rating is his lowest since 2013.Los Angeles sits in last place in the NFC West with a record of 3-6. The franchise is aiming to end a three-game skid.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Saints sticking with Dalton at QB despite struggles
New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen announced Wednesday that the team will start Andy Dalton against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday despite the veteran quarterback's recent struggles, according to Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football.Allen said he debated making a change under center this week but ultimately decided to stick with Dalton, keeping Jameis Winston on the bench.Winston has missed time with back and ankle injuries this season. Allen said the former first overall pick is unlikely to be fully healthy this year, though he's healthy enough to serve as New Orleans' backup. The 28-year-old started the Saints' first three games, passing for 858 yards and four touchdowns against five interceptions. He was inactive for two contests and has been the No. 2 option at QB for the past five weeks.Meanwhile, Dalton has completed 65% of his passes for 1,559 yards and 11 touchdowns against seven picks through seven starts in 2022. The Saints are coming off back-to-back losses in which they scored only 23 points combined.New Orleans ranks third in the NFC South with a 3-7 record.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles' Goedert placed on IR with shoulder injury
The Philadelphia Eagles placed Dallas Goedert on injured reserve Wednesday after the tight end sustained a shoulder injury.Goedert will miss at least four games. The ailment isn't expected to end his season, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of the Eagles' loss to the Washington Commanders on Monday on a play where Goedert was dragged down by his facemask, according to Tim McManus of ESPN.Goedert fumbled the ball on the play, which led to a Commanders field goal. The officiating crew didn't call a penalty on the play. The play was reviewed to see if Goedert fumbled, and referee Alex Kemp didn't see a penalty."We didn't see a facemask on the field," Kemp said, according to Zach Berman of The Athletic. "We were reviewing whether he was down by contact or whether it was a fumble and then whether the Washington player who recovered the ball was also down by contact."Jack Stoll, rookie Grant Calcaterra, and Tyree Jackson are the other tight ends on the Eagles' roster. They have combined for 12 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown in their careers.Goedert has been a massive part of the Eagles' offense this season, tallying 53 targets in nine games. He has 43 catches for 544 yards and three touchdowns.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 11 teasers: Searching for options to pair with a prime pick
The teaser basket rolled Sunday, as there wasn't a loser to be had out of the six choices we pinpointed last week. Then we got a case of "the Mondays" in Philadelphia. We tried expanding our teaser parameters, and while it worked perfectly with the Texans in New York, the previously trustworthy Eagles finally flunked a test. Some games don't have a teaser-worthy point spread. For example, the Ravens are 12-point favorites at home to the Panthers. Teasing Baltimore would capture some key numbers around a touchdown. But if the Ravens win by anything less than a touchdown, that's a loss for us. The alternative point spread of Baltimore -6 is priced at -250, which tells you that a teaser leg of -270 isn't valuable at all.Teasing Carolina up to +18 seems appealing. However, if you're worried about the Panthers losing by 13-18 points, you should be concerned about them losing by 20. Getting +13 to +18 over a big sample size isn't worth the price hike to -270.Speaking of alternative spreads, Josh Allen appears healthy enough, and a spread of -8.5 against the Browns this week shows that the Bills' rating has taken a hit after two straight losses. That means there may be value on Buffalo in general. An 8.5-point spread also suggests a prime opportunity to pull the Bills across key numbers to under a field goal. Comparative pricing gives us an example of how teasing Buffalo is valuable.ALT. SPREADODDSBills -7.5-125Bills -6.5-150Bills -5.5-185Bills -4.5-200Bills -3.5-225Bills -2.5-333The pricing significantly jumps once you move across the key number of -3, showing the importance of capturing that number in NFL betting. More importantly, the Bills' alternative spread (-2.5) is priced at -333, which is much higher than getting them at -2.5 with a teaser leg at -270.To get a good deal on Buffalo (-2.5), we must pair them with another bet and win both to cash the ticket. Fortunately, we can choose that other leg from our weekly "teaser basket" using what we know about key numbers.Teaser basketLet's look at the mathematically optimal plays available for Week 11:TEAMSPREADTEASER LEGBills (vs. CLE)-8.5-2.5Raiders (@ DEN)+2.5+8.5Steelers (vs. CIN)+5+1149ers (vs. ARZ)-8-2Well, there's certainly not much to choose from this week, is there? There are only five games with 3-point spreads this week. On top of that, the underdog is widely available at reduced juice. A +3 at +100 is less teaser-worthy than a +3 priced at -120 since the teaser leg price of -270 is fixed. Here's how:ODDSIMPLIED WIN PROB.+3 (+100)50%+3 (-120)54.5%+9 (-270)73%With the disparity on +3 pricing, you'd have to win five more teaser legs out of every 100 to be profitable versus just taking the +3 on the underdog. We're expanding teaser parameters on one game: Bengals-Steelers. We're doing that because we have a pretty strong understanding of the capabilities and limitations of both teams and the heightened probability of a competitive game between division rivals. The home underdog - with T.J. Watt back in the fold - is a good bet not to get blown out.Why aren't we expanding the parameters for the other game lined in no man's land between three and six? The Rams are +4, but with quarterback uncertainty and Cooper Kupp removed from the equation. They could win outright, but they also shouldn't be relied on not to get blown out.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Rodgers calls for NFL to mandate grass fields to protect players
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes the NFL needs to change all of its playing surfaces to natural grass."I think you would see less of these non-contact injuries that we see on some of the surfaces, and I think that it'd be a good step in the right direction toward player safety to make the requirement for every field to be grass," Rodgers said, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. However, the star quarterback isn't holding out hope."I don't have a lot of confidence when it comes to the league making that decision without some sort of big vote and gripes from certain owners who don't want to spend the money," he said.Rodgers has spoken out about issues impacting player safety before. He came out against the NFL's recent expansion to 17 games."(Expanding to 17 games) was about monetary gains, so (mandating grass fields) would be putting your money where your mouth is if player safety is important," Rodgers said. The NFLPA filed a request Tuesday calling for the immediate ban and replacement of slit film turf, which is used by seven NFL teams.Data indicates that grass has only been marginally safer than turf overall. However, the NFLPA, which wants slit film turf to be replaced with grass, has stated the surface has a higher injury rate. The report also says the NFL acknowledged the higher injury risk of slit film turf. The Packers currently play on polyethylene-based SISGrass, which combines synthetic fibers with Kentucky bluegrass.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Arians defends Leftwich, says Brady struggled early this season
Tampa Bay Buccaneers senior advisor Bruce Arians came to Byron Leftwich's defense amid immense criticism of the offensive coordinator. While discussing the team's offensive struggles with JoeBucsFan.com's Ira Kaufman, Arians said, "I don't think it was fair to Byron. Nobody is going to say that (Tom) Brady was playing bad, but he was playing bad."Tampa Bay suffered from an inefficient run game and a general lack of explosive plays amid a 3-5 start. Leftwich, in particular, received criticism for his play-calling.However, the Bucs have since won two straight games, including a 21-16 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Germany. Brady has completed 58 of 87 passes for 528 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception during that stretch, while Tampa Bay rushed for a season-high 161 yards versus Seattle. The recent run has Arians feeling "really optimistic" for the rest of the year."First off, we're getting healthy," Arians said. "Tom smiled at practice for the first time this season. He's going to be fine."I love the swagger we played with Sunday, especially defensively. It's been missing."The Buccaneers have a Week 11 bye. They'll look to extend their win streak in Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Report: Colts' Leonard undergoes season-ending back surgery
Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard underwent season-ending back surgery Tuesday, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. There's optimism that this latest procedure will permanently fix the ongoing issues, Rapoport adds. The star defender is currently on injured reserve. The 29-year-old was ruled out of last week's win over the Las Vegas Raiders after suffering a setback. He was unable to finish the team's workout Wednesday after experiencing some discomfort, according to interim head coach Jeff Saturday.Leonard has been dealing with nerve-related issues and underwent a previous back surgery in the offseason. He began the campaign on the PUP list as he worked his way back to health. Leonard made his season debut in Week 4 but suffered a broken nose and concussion following a collision. The three-time All-Pro was active for three games and started just one in his fifth campaign with Indianapolis. NFL Week 10 betting takeaways: A wild lead-up to even wilder games
Week 10 was wild - and I'm not even talking about the games on the field. The availability of Josh Allen, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Kyler Murray, and Ryan Tannehill fluctuated point spreads leading up to kickoff. As a result, the team ratings based on the closing lines of the games are all over the map this week. How ratings workWe look at the betting market's assessment of each team based on the closing lines from the previous week's games and then we estimate what each club is capable of going forward. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread before their most recent game. The number itself represents the percentage chance that a team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. The range column is my evaluation of each team's potential after seeing them play this season. Obviously, clubs don't perform at the same level every week; they play within a range. It's our job as handicappers to predict how they'll perform based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider a team's range may be.Rating before Week 10 kickoffTEAMRATINGRANGEEagles7650-7549ers7450-75Chiefs7365-80Bills7260-85Cowboys6240-70Ravens5755-70Vikings5745-65Buccaneers5650-80Dolphins5445-70Bengals5450-70Patriots5440-60Chargers5345-65Rams5140-60Browns5140-65Raiders4840-60Seahawks4630-50Saints4540-60Commanders4530-50Cardinals4440-60Jaguars4430-50Jets4230-50Falcons4230-50Packers4140-55Titans4140-60Colts4035-55Giants3925-50Broncos3930-50Bears3930-45Steelers3835-50Lions3630-50Panthers3120-40Texans2620-35The Bills did their best to hide that Allen would play - even having him sprint off the practice field Friday before the portion open to the media. A spread that opened Bills -8.5 went down to -3 through the week and closed up at -6.5 by kickoff. None of it mattered as the Vikings won outright in what's widely considered the game of the year. The -8.5 indicated a small downgrade coming off of the Bills' loss to the Jets in Week 9, and the fact that it didn't get back up over a touchdown showed a combination of concern over Allen finishing the game and a pile of defensive injuries. As such, the Bills' rating dropped as low as it has all season. It should bounce back into the high-70s if there are no residual issues for Allen before Buffalo hosts the Browns. The Chiefs, Eagles, and 49ers skipped ahead of the Bills even though Kansas City took a small downgrade from struggling against the Titans, which created a tiny buy-low spot against the Jaguars. NFL betting can be so tight that had the Chiefs stayed at their previous rating, they'd have been at least -10 to Jacksonville and thus wouldn't have covered. Neither the 49ers nor Eagles covered, which shouldn't be a surprise given they've seen a big boost in the last couple weeks. Both should see a dip back down, putting Buffalo back into the top spot. The Buccaneers' rating suffered a big drop, which has been our biggest red flag this season. If a team plummets without a quarterback injury, it's probably an overreaction. That said, had the game in Germany been lined longer than a field goal, the market would have bet the Seahawks even more than it already did, but Tampa -4.5 was probably a more appropriate line. The Ravens didn't play last week, but looking ahead to their game with the Panthers, a 12-to-13-point spread suggests a massive upward move. Beware.Someone will have to sit me down and explain slowly what the market either liked about the Browns or didn't like about the Dolphins. Cleveland took money all week, which opened up a ton of value on Miami. With John Wolford and Colt McCoy set to duel in L.A., the market flat-out guessed the value of each. It gave too much credit to Wolford and not enough to McCoy.The Packers saw their rating plummet early in the week, only to slowly move back up as they moved from +5 to +3.5. That seemed to potentially be an appropriate adjustment until they stormed back to beat the Cowboys. With all these teams plummeting week to week, the market just doesn't do much with the Raiders - unless that's masked by them playing (and losing to) teams in disarray. The Colts weren't great, but they were good enough under head coach Jeff Saturday, and more importantly, with Ryan at quarterback. The point to which they move back up this week will decide whether there's value on Indianapolis as a home underdog to the Eagles on Sunday. The Panthers will see a tick back up after beating the Falcons convincingly, but the interesting question relates to how you view their value with Baker Mayfield versus PJ Walker; which quarterback is more likely to keep them in a game they're supposed to get blown out in?Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Rams' Kupp to be placed on IR ahead of ankle surgery
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp is being placed on injured reserve due to a high ankle sprain, head coach Sean McVay confirmed Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Kupp is scheduled to have surgery to repair the ailment on Wednesday and will miss at least four weeks, per Rapoport. He'll undergo a tightrope procedure to fix the issue. McVay isn't ruling out Kupp for the remainder of the season. The star wideout landed awkwardly after attempting to make a play on a pass in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals. His leg got tripped up by Arizona's Marco Wilson, and he immediately clutched his leg in pain following the play. Kupp recorded three catches for minus-1 yard prior to his exit. He was spotted wearing a walking boot after the game.Kupp has recorded 75 receptions for 812 yards and six touchdowns this season while averaging 10.8 yards per catch in nine games. The 29-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign last season when he led the league with 145 catches, 1,947, and 16 touchdowns. He was named Offensive Player of the Year as well as Super Bowl LVI MVP.Kupp's absence comes amid a difficult stretch for the Rams. They are also missing quarterback Matthew Stafford, who remains in concussion protocol.McVay also confirmed starting left tackle Alaric Jackson will miss the remainder of the season due to blood clots and right guard Chandler Brewer will be out four-to-six week following knee surgery, according to The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue. The Rams (3-6) will play the New Orleans Saints (3-7) on Sunday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Power Rankings - Week 11: Eagles give way to new No. 1 team
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. Kansas City Chiefs (7-2) Jason Hanna / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 2The Chiefs take the top spot the same week Andy Reid showed off his creativity with Kadarius Toney. The rest of the league should be very afraid of Patrick Mahomes and Co. in the back half of the season.2. Philadelphia Eagles (8-1)Previous rank: 1Getting outplayed by the Commanders cost Philly a perfect season, but the Eagles should rebound faster than they fall.3. Minnesota Vikings (8-1)Previous rank: 6The Vikings won the game of the year in the most chaotic way possible.4. Miami Dolphins (7-3)Previous rank: 7When Tua Tagovailoa starts, the Dolphins win. Simple as that.5. Buffalo Bills (6-3) Timothy T Ludwig / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 3Despite some stumbles, the Bills still have one of football's most complete rosters.6. Baltimore Ravens (6-3)Previous rank: 5The bye week should help this team get healthy and focus on the season's second half.7. San Francisco 49ers (5-4)Previous rank: 8If Kyle Shanahan and Co. can improve on their 2-3 road record, this team is a threat.8. Dallas Cowboys (6-3)Previous rank: 4Getting both Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard involved early has been the Cowboys' recipe for success. That should remain their focus moving forward once Zeke is healthy.9. Cincinnati Bengals (5-4)Previous rank: 10Despite being just better than .500, the Bengals have a +43 point differential. Picking up wins without Ja'Marr Chase will go a long way in solidifying Cincy's playoff hopes.10. New York Jets (6-3) Mike Stobe / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 11Zach Wilson has played solid enough football since returning to the starting lineup, but his continued development will be key in determining if the Jets are a legitimate threat.11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-5)Previous rank: 15Tom Brady is now 4-0 in international games. More importantly, the Bucs have won back-to-back games and retaken first place in the NFC South.12. Seattle Seahawks (6-4)Previous rank: 9Seattle is just barely holding on to the division lead right now, and the 49ers feel like the better team. The Dec. 15 matchup between these two squads is shaping up to be very important.13. New York Giants (7-2)Previous rank: 12A relatively close win over the Texans isn't anything to get excited about, but with a victory over the Lions in Week 11, the Giants will have an 83% chance of making the playoffs - a remarkable feat given their expectations entering 2022.14. Tennessee Titans (6-3)Previous rank: 13The ceiling of the Titans' offense continues to be a concern despite wins in five of their last six games. Tennessee has yet to score more than 24 points in a game this season.15. Washington Commanders (5-5) Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 19Washington stunned the Eagles to take down the last remaining undefeated team in the league Monday night. The Commanders will look to get above .500 in Week 11 for the first time since Week 1 when they face the Texans.16. Los Angeles Chargers (5-4)Previous rank: 14The Chargers need to get healthy to save their season, something we could've said a dozen times over the last decade or so.17. New England Patriots (5-4)Previous rank: 16The Patriots sit tight after their bye. In a highly competitive AFC East, New England is, for once, the forgotten team - and rightfully so.18. Arizona Cardinals (4-6)Previous rank: 20The Cardinals kept their season alive Sunday while also likely damning the Rams and their embarrassing championship defense. But with the 49ers next up Monday, Arizona could go straight back onto life support.19. Atlanta Falcons (4-6)Previous rank: 17It's beyond time to see what rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder can do. The only person who's yet to realize it is Arthur Smith.20. Green Bay Packers (4-6) Patrick McDermott / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 27For the first time this season, the Packers' young receivers won't be looking over their shoulders for the incoming wrath of Aaron Rodgers.21. Los Angeles Rams (3-6)Previous rank: 18Put a fork in the Rams, they're done. They've now have to hope Sean McVay and Aaron Donald aren't side-eyeing the exit for retirement.22. Detroit Lions (3-6)Previous rank: 26The Lions have won back-to-back NFC North games, but their upcoming schedule is brutal.23. Chicago Bears (3-7)Previous rank: 22Bears fans might not be enjoying the close losses, but focus on the long term. Justin Fields is breaking out, and the team could get a top-five pick? Chicago's pain could quickly turn into joy in 2023.24. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-7)Previous rank: 25Their record isn't great, but the Jaguars are showing real signs of improvement. Having a +11 point differential might be a sign that better results are ahead.25. Indianapolis Colts (4-5-1) Ethan Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 28Fortunately for the Colts, the first game of Jeff Saturday's coaching career came against the Raiders. Next week's matchup with the Eagles likely won't be so favorable.26. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-6)Previous rank: 29Pittsburgh's defense came to play in last week's win over the Saints. Points remain difficult to come by, though, so the first losing season of Mike Tomlin's career is very much on the table.27. Cleveland Browns (3-6)Previous rank: 23A blowout loss to the Dolphins revealed how significant the gap is between the Browns and the AFC's elite. Deshaun Watson's eventual return will be too late to save their season.28. Carolina Panthers (3-7)Previous rank: 31The Panthers are still not a good team, but they've played significantly better since Matt Rhule's midseason departure. That's no coincidence.29. New Orleans Saints (3-7)Previous rank: 21It turns out a 24-0 shutout win over the Raiders was more about an awful opponent than it was about the Saints figuring things out. After managing just 10 points in Pittsburgh, New Orleans has now dropped two straight.30. Denver Broncos (3-6) AAron Ontiveroz/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images / Denver Post / GettyPrevious rank: 24Where do the Broncos go from here? The Russell Wilson trade has been a complete bust.31. Las Vegas Raiders (2-7)Previous rank: 30From playoff hopeful to a contender for the No. 1 overall pick. The Raiders hit a brand-new low by losing to the Colts in Jeff Saturday's debut.32. Houston Texans (1-7-1)Previous rank: 32Dameon Pierce continues to be the Texans' lone bright spot. He's making his case as the Offensive Rookie of the Year with 772 rushing yards, good for fifth in the league.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Sirianni: 'We played like crap' in Eagles' 1st loss of the season
The Philadelphia Eagles' eight-game win streak ended Monday at the hands of the division rival Washington Commanders in a 32-21 final.Following their first loss of the season, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni lamented costly mistakes as the major factor in his team's defeat rather than questionable calls from the officiating crew."I think when you play the way we did tonight, when you play the way we did on all three phases - offense, defense, special teams - coaching, right, when you play like that, it does seem like everything is going against you.""You create your own luck, and we played like crap," he added. "We didn't do a good enough job. It feels like things go against you. Those plays, those scenarios that happen when you play like that get magnified, whether it was the right call or wrong call."The Eagles had a couple of close calls not go their way. Tight end Dallas Goedert fumbled the ball after the Commanders got away with an uncalled facemask penalty. On the final possession of the night, Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke gave himself up and was subsequently hit by defender Brandon Graham, resulting in a controversial roughing the passer penalty that helped extend the drive.Sirianni refused to acknowledge that any call or missed penalties were the reason for Philly's first blemish of the 2022-23 campaign. Instead, he pointed to the team's four turnovers and the disparity in time of possession as critical factors in the outcome of Monday's matchup.Washington managed to score 16 unanswered points beginning in the second quarter, with the Eagles finally finding the end zone again in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia struggled to build off its two touchdowns in the opening frame. The Eagles' bid for a 17-0 season came to an end. Quarterback Jalen Hurts says he's ready to move forward to the team's next challenge."You obviously want to win all of the games we play in," he said. "Tonight wasn't our night. The message for me is control the things that you can."The Eagles (8-1) face a short week of preparation ahead of their matchup Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts (4-5-1).Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Commanders' Young expected to debut vs. Texans
The Washington Commanders are expected to activate defensive end Chase Young ahead of Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Young hasn't played since tearing his ACL and MCL last November in a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin the season and returned to practice on Nov. 2, giving the Commanders 21 days to activate him.Washington was optimistic that the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year winner could return against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. However, defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio shared that Young was yet to do everything at full speed.Head coach Ron Rivera said the team is looking long term as Young returns from a serious knee injury."We won't play him unless we feel he's ready to roll," Rivera said, according to ESPN's John Keim.Young proved to be a boost to the Commanders' defense after recording 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles during his rookie campaign in 2020. The Ohio State product couldn't match those numbers last season, tallying 26 tackles, three tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in eight contests.Washington will attempt to build on its momentum following a win Monday over the Eagles.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Graham owns late penalty on Heinicke: 'I was just trying to touch him down'
A backbreaking late hit from Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham essentially sealed a stunning upset for the Washington Commanders in the dying minutes of Monday night's NFC East clash.Trailing 26-21 with just under two minutes to play, the Eagles appeared to be on the verge of getting the ball back with a chance to win when Taylor Heinicke gave himself up under pressure on third down.Graham made late contact with the downed Commanders quarterback, though, drawing a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down that would allow Washington to nearly run out the time.

Cardinals release RB Benjamin
The Arizona Cardinals released running back Eno Benjamin, the team announced on Monday.Arizona's decision to release the third-yard halfback appeared to catch Benjamin by surprise, according to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss.Benjamin started three games this season when starter James Conner and backup Darrel Williams were both sidelined due to injury. The former seventh-round pick has rushed for 299 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 4.3 yards per carry through 10 games, and he also added 24 receptions for 184 yards. Benjamin saw his role reduced to a single offensive play, with Conner taking a majority of the snaps.Rookie tailback Keaontay Ingram could see an increased role with Benjamin no longer on the depth chart.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cardinals' Ertz out for season with knee injury
Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury suffered in Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Rams, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Initial reports indicated Ertz was facing a multi-week absence but still needed to undergo tests to determine the injury's severity. The three-time Pro Bowler leads the team in catches (47), targets (69), and receiving touchdowns (four). He also ranks third in receiving yards (408).With Ertz done for the year, the Cardinals will likely rely more heavily on their strong wide receiver corps of DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, Rondale Moore, Greg Dortch, and A.J. Green.Brown has been out since Week 6 with a foot injury, but head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Monday that he's nearing a return, according to Donnie Dulin of FanNation.Trey McBride and Stephen Anderson, Arizona's backup tight ends, have combined for four catches and 33 yards this season. The Cardinals acquired the 33-year-old Ertz last October in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he established himself as one of the NFL's best tight ends across eight-plus campaigns. After racking up 56 catches for 574 yards and three scores in 11 appearances in 2021 for Arizona, he signed a three-year extension reportedly worth $31.65 million in March.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders owner: McDaniels 'doing a fantastic job' amid 2-7 start
Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis backed head coach Josh McDaniels on Monday following a disappointing home loss to the Indianapolis Colts that dropped the Raiders to 2-7 this season."As far as Josh goes, I have no issues," Davis said, according to Ed Graney of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I'm getting to know him a lot better. When you sign someone to a contract, don't you expect him to fulfill the contract?"Davis added, "I like Josh. I think he's doing a fantastic job. That's why I hired him. We did an exhaustive search and found the person we believe is going to bring the Raiders to greatness."The Raiders have now lost three straight. They were shut out against the New Orleans Saints in Week 8 and then blew a 17-point lead in a defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars the following week. In Week 10, Las Vegas lost 25-20 to Indianapolis in Jeff Saturday's debut as Indy's interim head coach. Saturday had never coached above the high school level entering Sunday. The Raiders' ownership has given McDaniels assurances that he'll return to coach the team in 2023, a source told Jeff Howe of The Athletic."Life isn't static. It's fluid," Davis said. "You want to win at the end of the year and be the one holding the trophy. Obviously, we're not there yet. I know it's frustrating for the fan base. I feel for them. I'm a fan as well."McDaniels joined the Raiders this season on a four-year contract after serving as the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator in the previous 10 seasons. It's the second head coaching stint for the 46-year-old, who became head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009 and was fired midway through his second season with the team.McDaniels is 13-24 as a head coach in the NFL. The Raiders, who made the playoffs last year and entered the 2022 campaign with high expectations after adding receiver Davante Adams and pass-rusher Chandler Jones, rank fourth in the AFC West.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Falcons' Smith dismisses idea of benching Mariota
The Atlanta Falcons have lost three of their last four games and fallen out of the NFC playoff picture, but head coach Arthur Smith shut down the possibility of a quarterback change."There was never a situation. ... You understand why the questions get asked, lose two games in five days, and everybody wants to panic," Smith said Monday, per D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution."We're right in the middle of it," Smith added. "Not where we want to be, but the reality is you're right in the middle of a playoff race with a conference opponent coming in here for a game we need to win."Marcus Mariota has started all 10 games for the Falcons, throwing for 1,747 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Falcons are averaging 156.8 passing yards per game, which ranks 30th in the league.Mariota, 29, signed a two-year, $18.75-million deal with the Falcons in March."If we were going to make a change, I'd tell you. You'd see it at practice," Smith said when asked about benching Mariota, according to team reporter Tori McElhaney. The Falcons selected quarterback Desmond Ridder in the third round of the 2022 draft. He threw 87 touchdowns over a four-year career at Cincinnati. With the Falcons sitting at 4-6, they are one game back of the first-place Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Texans' Smith: 'I don't think it's time' to change quarterbacks
The Houston Texans fell to 1-7-1 Sunday after a 24-16 loss to the New York Giants, but head coach Lovie Smith dismissed the idea of benching quarterback Davis Mills."I don't think it's time, simple as that," Smith said Sunday when asked if he has considered a change at quarterback.Mills finished the game with 319 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception but struggled in the first half, throwing for 35 yards on six completions."We rotate pretty much at most positions; we play more than one guy. Quarterback position is a little bit different. We can't turn the ball over. Acknowledging what we did today is not good enough, and anytime we're turning the ball over, especially in the red zone, it's not good enough. But that's where we are right now," Smith added.Mills, 24, was selected in the third round by the Texans in the 2021 draft. He has started 20 games for Houston, including every game this year. He ranks 25th in completion percentage this season.Kyle Allen is listed as Mills' backup on the depth chart, with Jeff Driskel on the practice squad."I've got to go out and make plays just like everyone else," Mills said after Sunday's loss. "My job is to go out there and protect the football and win football games, and we haven't done that up to this point."The Texans have the worst record in the NFL, putting them on track to have the first overall pick in the upcoming draft.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Belichick: Coaches should be allowed to challenge plays under 2 minutes
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick believes NFL coaches should be allowed to challenge plays under two minutes."Provided the team has a challenge, they should have the opportunity to challenge really any play," Belichick said Monday when asked about the controversial play that took place late in the Minnesota Vikings' victory against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis made a diving catch with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter but visibly lost control of the ball after hitting the ground. The play, which wasn't reviewed by officials, was key in helping Buffalo set up a field goal to force overtime.NFL senior vice president of officiating Walt Anderson said postgame the play should have been reviewed and ruled incomplete, according to ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg."I get forward progress, and things like that, that you can't challenge," Belichick added. "I'm not talking about that. I'm saying not having the ability to challenge a play that could impact the outcome of the game. Even calls like holding and pass interference and things like that, I don't see why those plays can't be reviewed (by coach's challenge)."The NFL doesn't allow coaches to challenge plays under two minutes, in part so they aren't allowed to manipulate challenges strategically to stop the clock, Reiss notes."The rules are the rules, the competition committee and the league vote on the rules, so whatever they are, that's what they are," Belichick said. "I think that, provided that the team has a challenge, they should have the opportunity to challenge, really, any play."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Panthers to start Mayfield vs. Ravens as Walker nurses ankle injury
Carolina Panthers head coach Steve Wilks announced Monday that quarterback Baker Mayfield will start against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11 over P.J. Walker, who's dealing with a high ankle sprain, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Sam Darnold will serve as Carolina's backup.Mayfield started the first five games of the season for the Panthers before an ankle injury sidelined him for two contests. The former first overall pick returned to the team and was active in each of the last three weeks, but Carolina opted to start Walker instead.Mayfield, who joined the Panthers in a trade from the Cleveland Browns, completed just 54.9% of his passes for 962 yards and four touchdowns against four interceptions in his five starts. He also appeared in Carolina's Week 9 matchup, passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns while replacing Walker in a blowout loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Panthers are coming off a 25-15 win over the Atlanta Falcons that improved Carolina to 3-7 this season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. MNF best bets: Same old for undefeated Eagles?
Each Monday, we'll finish off the week that was in the NFL with a look at value spots in the remaining game - under one condition: You promise not to chase. Whether Sunday provided a boost to the accounts or left a little to be desired, Monday Night Football provides an opportunity to show responsibility in your betting, as there will always be another wild Sunday to get lost in.For the third straight game, the Eagles are double-digit favorites. Get used to it. With an alarmingly soft schedule on the road to a potential perfect regular season, it won't be the last time. They split the last two scenarios laying more than 10 points, but this time, they're going against a division foe, albeit one they laid waste to earlier this season. The Commanders have since swapped out quarterbacks and have mostly found success in close games. Unfortunately for the half-dozen or so remaining Washington fans, staying close in a Monday nighter in Philadelphia is a different task than a reeling Packers team at home, the Sam Ehlinger Colts, and the seemingly addicted-to-drama Vikings.Commanders @ Eagles (-11, 43.5)The last we saw the Eagles, it was also in prime time in a weird matchup at the Texans. A short week and a cross-conference opponent made it understandable that they would start a little slow. The Eagles gave up two touchdowns in the first half but just three points the rest of the way. Perhaps a well-rested version of the team with home-field-infused defensive energy is more stout from kickoff on Monday night? This is a different matchup, though. Taylor Heinicke's frenetic mobile style of lobbing balls into dangerous areas with the hopes that his quality receivers will win 50-50 situations is the opposite of the statuesque Davis Mills rifling passes to less-heralded targets. Defensively, the Commanders' front is the strength of their team as a whole, whereas the Texans provide little pressure and even less resistance against the run. From a game-planning standpoint, Philadelphia doesn't have to go far to find something that should work. This sets up more like the Steelers game the week prior, where Jalen Hurts can air it out with advantages down the field. In fact, that's exactly how the Eagles attacked Washington earlier this season, with three receivers catching passes of 38-plus yards and DeVonta Smith tallying eight receptions for 169 yards.Heinicke's three starts have featured repeated turnover-worthy plays that either the Eagles' defensive line will take advantage of via sack-fumbles or a secondary with Darius Slay and James Bradberry will be there to pick off the errant passes. With a rabid Philadelphia atmosphere, the Commanders will likely fall behind early, and while the backdoor cover is always a concern with a spread this high, I think the Eagles pull far enough away to avoid late-game spread hijinks.Pick: Eagles -11DeVonta Smith over 53.5 receiving yardsAs mentioned above, Smith had a big game earlier this season against this same opponent. So why is this line so relatively low? Because Smith has gone over 44 yards just once since that Week 3 game. However, with the expectation of less success on the ground than usual, Smith should have a nice combination of space and opportunity against the Commanders' secondary.Jalen Hurts longest rush over 12.5 yardsThis is a compliment to the Commanders' ability to get pressure. It won't be enough to do significant damage, but there'll be more than a few occasions where Hurts will happily take off and run. Whether it's those scrambles or occasional designed runs off of read-option keepers, Hurts will get loose for a big gain.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 10 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward. Now do you believe? Isaiah Vazquez / Getty Images Sport / GettyEven at 7-1 heading into this week, it was difficult to believe in the Vikings. Their only quality win came against a Dolphins team playing without Tua Tagovailoa, while the majority of their victories - which were against inferior competition - were a lot closer than they needed to be.After going on the road to knock off the Bills in one of the craziest games in recent memory, though, how can you not start to buy in?This one was an absolute roller coaster. With Minnesota needing a touchdown to win late in the fourth quarter, Justin Jefferson made one miraculous play after another, including one of the best catches you'll ever see, to put the Vikings on the doorstep. All appeared lost when they were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the half-yard line with 50 seconds to play, but Josh Allen then fumbled the next snap, and Minnesota recovered in the end zone for the go-ahead score.Allowing the Bills to race down for a game-tying field goal seemed like a bad omen for the Vikings, but they responded on the first possession of overtime with another impressive drive to go up three. And just as it appeared that Josh Allen had entered hero mode, his sights set on a touchdown to win it, Patrick Peterson came away with his second interception of the day to close it out.Constantly needing to come through in close games like this is in no way sustainable. In fact, you can almost always expect year-over-year regression from teams whose success was predicated on eking out narrow victories. But who says the Vikings can't keep this magic going for at least this season? As unpredictable as late-game situations can be, it certainly doesn't hurt to have the best receiver in football on your side. Single-covered? Good luck. Double-covered? Jefferson doesn't seem to mind that, either. He's a big-play machine who's nearly impossible to stop.If the defense can continue to be this opportunistic, coming through with the kind of turnovers that swing games, it'll be immensely difficult to keep up with an offense that features Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and T.J. Hockenson. The Vikings are a legit threat in a wide-open NFC race.Toney the steal Jason Hanna / Getty Images Sport / GettyWith so many prominent names on the move at this year's trade deadline, the Chiefs landing Kadarius Toney seemed to fly under the radar. It's taken just two games to conclude that the rest of the NFL is going to regret this one.On the surface, Toney's price tag of third- and sixth-round picks wasn't all that egregious. The new Giants staff clearly didn't have any plans for him, for whatever reason, and constant injury issues over his first season and a half raised questions about whether he'd be able to stay on the field. But this is still a supremely talented first-round pick whose pro career had barely even begun. The rare times Toney was in action with the Giants last year, it was easy to see how dynamic he could be at this level. In terms of suddenness and explosiveness after the catch, his only peers are the Tyreek Hills of the world. He really is that special of an athlete.Andy Reid has understandably wasted no time working his newest weapon into Kansas City's offense. After seeing a few touches in his Chiefs debut last week, Toney was a focal point in Sunday's win over the Jaguars. He turned his five targets into four catches for 57 yards and the first touchdown of his NFL career while also adding 33 yards on two carries.Kansas City had already been doing just fine without Tyreek Hill - that's the advantage of having Patrick Mahomes and one of the NFL's most creative play-callers. For the rest of the league to let the Chiefs add a playmaker of Toney's caliber - for little more than a compensatory third-round pick - is just asking for them to be even more unstoppable. No matter the issues that led the Giants to part ways with Toney, they've got to be kicking themselves over what could've been. A team with a bottom-five receiver group giving away a talent like this makes the move all the more puzzling.Bucs show some life picture alliance / picture alliance / GettyAfter a Thursday night snoozefest all but confirmed that the rest of the NFC South had no interest in capitalizing on Tampa Bay's slow start, the Bucs further proved that the division was never really there for the taking, anyway. You didn't think you were going to get rid of Tom Brady that easily, did you?Sunday's win over the red-hot Seahawks, the Bucs' second straight victory after they uncharacteristically dropped three straight, is far and away Tampa Bay's most impressive performance of the season thus far. With several key pieces back in the mix after some injury issues early in the year, Tampa Bay's defense frustrated Geno Smith and Seattle's offense like few others have this season. The Seahawks made a late charge, with Smith continuing to prove that this late-career breakout is no fluke, but Tampa Bay gave itself enough more than enough of a buffer by keeping Seattle out of the end zone until midway through the fourth quarter.Slowly but surely, the Bucs' offense is beginning to put it together, too. It wasn't a perfect effort by any means, as Brady's costly late interception forced them to sweat out the win. But this unit continues to look more and more in sync after a listless start to the season. The most encouraging development Sunday was Tampa Bay finally getting the run game going. After entering this week ranked last in attempts, yards, and yards per attempt, Rachaad White and Leonard Fournette led the way to a season-high 161 yards on the ground. This is still a far more flawed version of the Bucs than we saw in the first two years of the Brady era, and it remains to be seen whether they can replicate the same success against a more stout defensive opponent. But progress is progress, and you can't help but take notice when a Brady-led team that we were all ready to write off starts to show signs of figuring it out. Sound familiar?McDaniels under fire Ethan Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Raiders have hit rock bottom. An expected playoff contender starting the season 2-6 with three blown 17-point leads was bad enough. But following that up with a loss at home to the Colts, after the week that team had? It doesn't get any worse. To recap, Indy fired Frank Reich on Monday morning. Rather than promoting from within, as NFL teams always do following midseason changes, Jim Irsay made a mockery of the coaching profession - and what the league insists is a meritocracy - by going outside the organization to hand the keys to former Colts center Jeff Saturday. His qualifications: uh, being the owner's friend? Most teams would've stomped an opponent that rolled into town fresh off a practice week led by a former player who's only ever coached at the high school level. But the Raiders, evidently, are not most teams - not under Josh McDaniels.Even with his previous head coaching failures, the move to hire McDaniels was an exciting one for Las Vegas. Long considered one of the game's premier offensive minds, and thought to have grown up quite a bit after a nightmare Broncos tenure, he was more than deserving of another chance. It was easy to envision how a coach with his accomplishments could help the Raiders take the next step after a wild run to the playoffs last year, especially with Davante Adams and Chandler Jones joining the mix. That's not quite how it's worked out. Instead, we're talking about whether McDaniels is even going to make it to the end of the year. Mark Davis presumably doesn't want to make that kind of change - certainly not midseason, and probably not even after just one year. But with one embarrassment after another, and no sign that his head coach is doing anything to steady the ship, at what point is the choice made for him?A Las Vegas team that finally appeared to be on an upward trajectory is suddenly crashing back down to the depths of the cellar this organization has so often called home over the last two decades. With eight games to play, the Raiders are in position for the No. 2 pick in a draft that's expected to be rich with quarterback talent. They've also got an out in Derek Carr's contract, so major changes could be in store either way.Unless McDaniels can convince Davis that he can make a successful run at old friend Tom Brady in free agency - get ready for those storylines - there appears to be an increasingly real chance that the Raiders clean house for the second time in as many years.Quick slantsAllen looks just fine Timothy T Ludwig / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Bills failed to capitalize on countless opportunities to put away the Vikings, dropping to 6-3 and, incredibly, third place in the AFC East. But this game's result was always going to be secondary to the health of Josh Allen, and the superstar quarterback slinging the ball around like he always does was a major relief. While a few bad decisions ended up being the difference in the game, all indications are that the elbow injury that kept him out of practice this week wasn't an issue. If Allen is healthy, the Bills will be one of the last teams standing.Denver still stinksThe optimistic outlook for the Broncos heading into this week, if you were still clinging to hope for this team, was that the bye at least gave the offense some time to get it together. But nobody actually thought that would fix anything, did they? It was much of the same in Sunday's loss to the Titans, with Russell Wilson and Co. mustering all of 10 points and continuing to waste one of the league's best defenses. Denver's only touchdown coming on a coverage bust is pretty much par for the course. A coaching change feels inevitable at this point, but who knows whether that even solves the issue. The Broncos had better hope a new staff can get more out of their quarterback. Otherwise, the Wilson trade and subsequent contract will prove to be catastrophic decisions.Kirk earning his dealAs a longtime basement dweller coming off a disaster 2021 campaign, the Jaguars found themselves in a position where they needed to overpay to land top free agents. Among other massive deals handed out in the offseason, it was Christian Kirk's four-year, $72-million contract that drew the most criticism. Is anyone even batting an eye at that price tag now? Kirk was been phenomenal throughout his first year in Jacksonville, and his nine catches for 105 yards and two scores against the Chiefs marked his best game yet. He's easily on pace to top the 1,000-yard plateau for the first time in his career and, more importantly, well on his way toward establishing himself as a long-term No. 1 target for Trevor Lawrence.Fields does it againJustin Fields was once again a nightmare to defend this week against the Lions. It didn't lead to a win, but the former first-round pick's emergence as an elite runner has been an incredible development for his early career growth. After rushing for 178 yards and a score last week, Fields torched Detroit for 147 yards and two touchdowns in defeat. That gives him a total of 749 rushing yards on the year - good for sixth among the league's leading rushers - and puts him on pace for 1,273 yards on the year, which would break Lamar Jackson's single-season record for a quarterback.Christian Watson breakout Patrick McDermott / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Packers lost five straight games to drop to 3-6 mainly due to a glaring lack of offensive weapons. Might that problem soon be solved? It was just one game, but second-round pick Christian Watson finally showing flashes of his immense potential was a massive development for the Packers this week. The rookie wideout was a big-play machine, recording four catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Oh, and go figure - the Packers finally get some production from the receiver position, and they knock off the Cowboys. Asking for this kind of impact from Watson on a weekly basis would be unrealistic. However, his making the case for a prominent role alongside Allen Lazard suddenly makes the outlook of Green Bay's passing game a whole lot less bleak.Ryan returns as starterJeff Saturday kicked off his Indianapolis tenure with a surprise move, giving the starting job back to Matt Ryan after the Colts had turned to Sam Ehlinger for the last two games. The plan, as now-former head coach Frank Reich had announced in Week 8, was to have Ehlinger start for the rest of the season. But things apparently changed amid the turmoil of this past week, and, as we saw in the win over the Raiders, it was the right move. Ryan shouldn't have been benched in the first place. The first seven games of the season were rough, to be sure, but it wasn't the veteran quarterback's fault. And Ehlinger was never going to give the Colts a better chance to win. If their pass protection holds up as it did this week, the offense has a chance to be productive with Ryan under center.Wilson fitting right inThe blockbuster Christian McCaffrey trade wasn't just good for the 49ers and Panthers - the Dolphins are making out pretty damn well, too. McCaffrey's arrival made Jeff Wilson expendable for San Francisco. Knowing exactly what he can bring to an outside-zone offense, having coached with the 49ers, Mike McDaniel saw a perfect fit. Two games later, Wilson has solidified himself as the Dolphins' top running back. He was a major factor in Miami's blowout win over Cleveland, taking 17 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown. A fifth-round pick was a small price to pay for the balance a reliable ball carrier could bring to this offense down the stretch.Browns are doneSpeaking of the Browns, it's pretty much curtains for their season. The goal was to keep things afloat until Deshaun Watson returned from his 11-game suspension. There were times when it looked like they may do just that, including a season-opening stretch that easily could've been 4-0 instead of 2-2. But another loss now drops the Browns to 3-6 with games against the Bills and Bucs up next before Watson debuts in Week 13. The question is whether the quarterback situation gives the coaching staff a pass looking ahead to next season.Stat of the week
Colts' Ryan starts vs. Raiders in Saturday's coaching debut
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Ryan started Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders after being benched in favor of Sam Ehlinger during the previous two contests. The move came in Jeff Saturday's first game as interim head coach after the Colts fired Frank Reich.Indianapolis beat the Raiders 25-20 to improve to 4-5-1. Ryan completed 21 of 28 pass attempts for 221 yards and a touchdown while adding four carries for 38 yards and a score.Indianapolis fell to the Washington Commanders and the New England Patriots in Ryan's absence. The offense scored just 19 points across those two games and failed to consistently move the ball, particularly last week when the Colts amassed just 121 yards of total offense against the Patriots.Despite Saturday originally declaring Ehlinger as the team's starter moving forward, Ryan received some first-team reps in practice this week, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Murray, Stafford both inactive for Cardinals-Rams game
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford are inactive for their teams' matchup Sunday.Colt McCoy will start in place of Murray, while John Wolford gets the start for L.A.Murray entered Week 10 as a game-time decision due to a hamstring injury. He was listed as questionable ahead of this weekend's showdown. He appeared to sustain the ailment in Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks. The two-time Pro Bowl passer has passed for 2,168 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading Arizona to a 3-6 record this season.Stafford returned to practice on Friday as a limited participant after missing two prior sessions. The team believes that Stafford may have sustained concussion symptoms during last week's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Rams hold a 3-5 record this season with Stafford under center. Josh Allen starts vs. Vikings despite sprained elbow
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen started Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings despite his elbow injury.Allen suffered an elbow sprain in last week's loss to the New York Jets and was a limited participant at practice Friday after not practicing Wednesday and Thursday. The Bills, who've spent intensive time consulting their doctors and other arm specialists, have been told Allen isn't at any added risk of aggravating his injury if he plays Sunday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Allen has put on a show this season, passing for 2,403 yards and 19 touchdowns against eight interceptions through eight games. He's also added 392 yards and four scores on the ground. The game between Buffalo and Minnesota is one of Sunday's most anticipated matchups. The 6-2 Bills are currently the No. 1 seed in the AFC, while the 7-1 Vikings rank second in the NFC, behind only the 8-0 Philadelphia Eagles.Buffalo didn't elevate third-string passer Matt Barkley to the active roster from the practice squad Saturday, making Allen and backup Case Keenum the team's only available quarterbacks Sunday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bucs edge Seahawks in NFL's 1st game in Germany
MUNICH (AP) — Tom Brady stayed undefeated abroad by throwing two touchdown passes to help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16 on Sunday in the first regular-season game played in Germany.Brady connected with Julio Jones and Chris Godwin on scoring passes and Leonard Fournette ran one in as the Bucs (5-5) improved to .500 and snapped Seattle's four-game winning streak.German fans packed Allianz Arena for the historic game and the Bucs delivered with a balanced offensive performance on three long scoring drives. Rachaad White started and ran for 105 yards on 22 carries.Brady completed 22 of 29 passes for 258 yards to add Germany to his list of international wins after victories in London (twice) and Mexico City with the New England Patriots.Trailing 21-3, Seattle's Geno Smith threw touchdown passes to Tyler Lockett and Marquise Goodwin to make the score 21-16 with 3:58 to play.Smith found Goodwin in the corner of the end zone for a 19-yard score on fourth-and-1 to complete a drive that started on the Bucs 45 after Brady threw his first interception since the season opener. Linebacker Cody Barton picked it off.Lockett caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Smith with 8:20 left, but the 2-point conversion try failed, leaving the score 21-9.Smith was 23 of 33 for 275 yards and the two touchdowns for the Seahawks (6-4), who are still atop the NFC West.Brady is the first quarterback to start a regular-season game in three countries outside the U.S.The seven-time Super Bowl champion found Jones on a short crossing route and the receiver ran it in for a 31-yard scoring play early in the second quarter. Jones put his left shoulder down and got past safety Josh Jones at the goal line.Fournette then rumbled in from 1 yard to finish a 13-play, 86-yard drive. He scored two plays after a wide-open Scotty Miller caught a 22-yard pass and went down while bobbling the ball at the 5.Godwin caught a 4-yard touchdown reception to make it 21-3 early in the fourth quarter. Titans' Tannehill active vs. Broncos after 2-game absence
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is active for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos after missing the last two games due to an ankle injury, the team announced.Tannehill, who was listed as questionable Friday, participated in all three days of practice this week. The Titans' passing game struggled over the last two weeks with rookie quarterback Malik Willis starting. Willis only connected on 11 of 26 pass attempts over his first two career starts.Tannehill, 34, has completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,097 yards and six touchdowns against three interceptions while posting a 4-2 record this season. The Titans' offense is also welcoming back first-round rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks, who was activated from injured reserve Saturday.Tennessee is coming off an overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that dropped the team to 5-3.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Colts' Irsay was hell-bent on Saturday despite concerns from top execs
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay hired former center Jeff Saturday as interim head coach despite members of the team's front office expressing concerns regarding the move, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Multiple Colts' top executives - including team president Pete Ward and general manager Chris Ballard - shared their reservations to Irsay, but the owner was hell-bent on hiring Saturday, according to Rapoport. In a stunning move, Indianapolis announced that Saturday would replace Frank Reich, who the team fired as head coach Monday after a 26-3 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 9. Saturday's been a consultant for the Colts over the last few years while also serving as an analyst for ESPN.The 47-year-old is a member of the team's Ring of Honor, having played for Indianapolis from 1999-2011. Saturday, who made five Pro Bowls with the Colts and helped them win one Super Bowl, has never coached above the high school level.Irsay initially called Saturday during the loss to the New England Patriots, asking him about Indy's O-line issues. The Colts allowed nine sacks against the Patriots.Pass game specialist and assistant quarterbacks coach Parks Frazier will be the Colts' offensive play-caller in Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The 30-year-old has no experience in the role. Indianapolis initially offered play-calling duties to Scott Milanovich without any revision to his existing contract, which led the quarterbacks coach to reject the offer, according to Rapoport.Hiring Saturday to replace Reich isn't the only major move in what's been a disappointing season for the 3-5-1 Colts. They previously benched quarterback Matt Ryan for Sam Ehlinger and parted ways with offensive coordinator Marcus Brady.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Giants, Barkley table contract talks
The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley will table any talks regarding a contract extension until after the 2022 season after failing to agree on a deal during last week's bye, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The two sides share a mutual interest in a long-term pact but never came close to finalizing a new deal last week, Schefter adds.Barkley has bounced back in style this season after dealing with multiple injury-plagued campaigns in recent years. The 25-year-old, who missed 21 games between 2019-21, has racked up 779 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in eight games this season to go along with 28 receptions for 189 yards. New York's been one of the biggest surprises of the year after starting the season 6-2.Barkley is in line to become one of the league's highest-paid running backs. Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers tops the position with a $16-million average annual salary. He's followed by Ezekiel Elliott ($15 million), Alvin Kamara ($15 million), Dalvin Cook ($12.6 million), and Derrick Henry (12.5 million). The Giants could use their franchise tag on Barkley, which would cost them about $12 million next year. If New York tags the star running back, the team wouldn't be able to use it on quarterback Daniel Jones, who's also set to become a free agent after the season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Steelers' Fitzpatrick out multiple weeks due to appendectomy
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will miss multiple weeks after undergoing an appendectomy Saturday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Steelers announced that Fitzpatrick wouldn't play in Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints due to appendicitis.Fitzpatrick, a cornerstone of Pittsburgh's defense, has racked up 45 tackles, six pass breakups, and three interceptions in seven games this season, including a pick-6. The two-time Pro Bowler also missed a game in October with a knee injury. But the Steelers' defense is welcoming back an important starter, as the team officially activated T.J. Watt from injured reserve Saturday. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year hasn't played since sustaining a pectoral ailment in Week 1.Pittsburgh also placed veteran cornerback William Jackson, whom the team acquired at the trade deadline, on injured reserve Saturday. The Steelers have allowed 24.6 points per game in 2022, ranking only 24th in the NFL.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Josh Allen questionable vs. Vikings; Bills don't elevate 3rd QB
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings due to an elbow injury.Allen logged a limited practice Friday after being absent the previous two days. He was spotted without a brace or sleeve on his elbow, according to Jon Scott of Spectrum News 1."We're going to literally take it one hour at a time and see how things go through the course of today and then go from there," head coach Sean McDermott said Friday, according to Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com.The Bills didn't elevate quarterback Matt Barkley from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, putting Allen in line to be active in Week 10. It's still unclear if he'll start. Backup Case Keenum will get the nod if Allen can't go.Allen suffered the injury in last Sunday's loss to the New York Jets. The 26-year-old was evaluated for an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament and related nerves after the game.Bills safety Jordan Poyer was ruled out with an elbow injury, and defensive end Gregory Rousseau won't play due to an ankle injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 10 player props: Using usage from morning to midnight
Like your fantasy football team, the weekly player props are supposed to supplement your betting Sunday. Another 4-6 effort shouldn't be as frustrating as it is, but watching players like Rachaad White unable to get a play call that uses his speed is more than a little annoying. We've fallen under .500, so while last season's epic results are likely out of reach, we can look forward to getting back in the black and will have fun doing it.Tyler Lockett under 59.5 receiving yardsIf the Buccaneers don't want to evolve what they do on offense, we'll have to rely on the quality of their personnel on defense. With Antoine Winfield returning Sunday, Tampa's secondary is fully healthy. The Bucs only gave up one big play last week - a long Cooper Kupp touchdown. With Akiem Hicks back as well, Tampa's defense should return to dominating up front. DK Metcalf can win one-on-ones, but Tyler Lockett needs more time to get open. He'll struggle with that in Germany.Najee Harris over 42.5 rushing yardsWe've targeted Harris unders in this space before, but a bye week should have allowed the Steelers tailback to get healthier. Pittsburgh's investment in the first-rounder should also mean he'll still get a starter's worth of carries. This is the lowest Harris has seen his rushing yards lined, but it's the easiest matchup he's had as far as run defense and potential game script are concerned.Trent Sherfield over 13.5 longest receptionSherfield spent last season in San Francisco but didn't do much, catching just nine passes. He's already doubled that this campaign with Mike McDaniel in Miami. After being used sparingly early, Sherfield is taking advantage of being wide open while defenses scramble to know where Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are. He's caught a pass for 14 yards or more in the last four starts by Tua Tagovailoa.Trevor Lawrence under 36.5 pass attemptsAs 9.5-point underdogs, the assumption is Lawrence will have to throw a lot while trailing, and 36.5 is the highest attempt total we've seen all year for him. However, the Jaguars trailed 17-0 last week, and he threw just 31 passes. In the games where Lawrence has gone over, it was because the Jags' opponent had quick drives giving Jacksonville plenty of opportunity in close games. The Chiefs will take more time on their drives, and Doug Pederson won't panic, using the Jaguars' new workhorse, Travis Etienne, to sustain their own drives.Davis Mills under 206.5 passing yardsThe word is out on the Texans' star rookie running back, Dameon Pierce, as his total is over 80. Given his combination of power and speed, why wouldn't you just give him the ball to take advantage of the Giants' bad run defense instead of having Davis Mills throw through the rain and wind of New Jersey? Plus, Mills' home-road splits suggest he's far more comfortable indoors.Russell Wilson over 13.5 rushing yardsWilson's had a week off to get in some high knees on dry land. That's helpful if you're making a concerted effort to run the ball more, which is what Wilson admitted after pulling out a Week 3 win when he finally started scrambling late. He's been over this number in the four games since, and there are murmurs that the Broncos will deploy the up-tempo offense that helped them win in London. The Titans are missing key defensive starters, so Wilson should get lost and loose for a big gain.Justin Fields over 59.5 rushing yardsThis could fall under the category of too obvious, but even Aaron Rodgers had 40 yards rushing against the Lions last week. Like many of the best running quarterbacks, you need to see Fields a few times to gauge his size, speed, and willingness to take off. This version of Fields will still surprise their division rival with all the designed runs the Bears have added to the mix since they last met.Sam Ehlinger under 28.5 pass attemptsWe don't need to break down the numbers in this game because who could assume logic or execution with these two teams' coaching situations? Instead, we'll buy into a narrative.Interim head coach Jeff Saturday said he's happy to "take the points" and doesn't care for making mathematically correct decisions using analytics. There's also a famous clip of him arguing with Peyton Manning during their playing days about running the ball more. Peyton Manning. We'll guess that Saturday has told first-time play-caller Parks Frazier not to get crazy with Sam Ehlinger and hand the ball off repeatedly, especially with Jonathan Taylor on track to play.Dalton Schultz over 32.5 receiving yardsSchultz got hurt in Week 2 and tried to fight through injury for two more games before taking Week 6 off. In the two contests before last week's bye, with Dak Prescott back, Schultz has 11 catches for 123 yards. A favorite target of Prescott, this total is using Schultz's stats when neither player was healthy.Jimmy Garoppolo under 241.5 passing yardsWhen your ball-carrier depth chart includes Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, and Deebo Samuel, and you're facing the worst run defense of the last two years, why would you ever throw the football? A seven-point spread suggests the 49ers should be running the clock out late. Instead of guessing tailback usage for the 49ers, we'll bet against Garoppolo's usage.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there’s a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Barkley: Beckham-Giants reunion 'would be a great story'
Although Odell Beckham Jr. seemingly won't be short of options when he's ready to resume his NFL career, a return to the upstart New York Giants would arguably be the most compelling move.Giants running back Saquon Barkley - who attended Beckham's 30th birthday party during his team's bye week - believes the merits of a reunion speak for themselves."I feel like there's not really a sales pitch. It's New York. It's the Giants," Barkley said Friday. "Obviously, he has familiar faces within this facility and in this locker room. Personally, I think it would be a great story to come back to a place that you were at before and continue to build success."The sweepstakes for the star wide receiver now include the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs.Cowboys stars Micah Parsons and Ezekiel Elliott have pushed on Twitter for Beckham to join the club, while owner Jerry Jones recently teased a potential move for the free agent.Additionally, Bills pass-rusher Von Miller has publicly courted Beckham, his former Rams teammate, on multiple occasions."He's Odell. He's a heck of a player," Barkley said. "When he's healthy, he's one of the best players in the league. Why wouldn't anybody want him?"The Giants drafted Beckham with the 12th pick in the 2014 draft. He instantly became a household name during a breakout debut season in which he racked up 1,305 and 12 touchdowns to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.Beckham put up similar All-Pro-level production in the following two seasons but was hampered by injuries over the next few years. The wideout played the 2018 season with Barkley before the Giants traded Beckham to the Cleveland Browns.Beckham rediscovered his form with the Rams last year after Cleveland cut him midseason, producing 305 yards and five touchdowns in eight regular-season games, as well as 288 yards and two scores in the postseason. He suffered a torn ACL in Los Angeles' Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals and is reportedly expected to be cleared to return in December. The Giants are one of the surprises of the season after earning a 6-2 record through the first nine weeks of the campaign.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers' Samuel set to return for SNF, Mitchell among 4 activated off IR
The San Francisco 49ers are coming out of their bye week much healthier than when they went in.Star wide receiver Deebo Samuel is in line to play Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers after being removed from Friday's injury report, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. Samuel missed the 49ers' last game before their bye - a win over the Los Angeles Rams - due to a hamstring injury.Meanwhile, running back Elijah Mitchell, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, offensive lineman Colton McKivitz, and defensive end Jordan Willis will be activated from injured reserve for the Week 10 matchup.Receiver Jauan Jennings, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw will also return after missing the Rams game due to injury.San Francisco sits at 4-4 through nine weeks and will be looking to keep pace with the NFC West-leading Seattle Seahawks, who play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Munich.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kyler to be game-time decision vs. Rams due to hamstring injury
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will be a game-time decision Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams due to a hamstring injury, head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Murray, who was listed as questionable, was reportedly considered day-to-day this week. He missed practice Wednesday and was a limited participant Thursday. The 25-year-old, who missed three games due to injury last year, completed 66.7% of his passes for 2,168 yards and 12 touchdowns against six interceptions through nine appearances this season. He also rushed for 359 yards and two scores. If Murray is unavailable, Arizona will likely start backup Colt McCoy. The Cardinals' quarterback depth chart also features Trace McSorley. The 3-6 Cardinals and 3-5 Rams rank fourth and third in the NFC West ahead of Week 10, respectively.Los Angeles is facing its own issues at quarterback - Matthew Stafford's status is uncertain after he entered the concussion protocol this week.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Stafford still in concussion protocol, questionable vs. Cardinals
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said Friday that quarterback Matthew Stafford is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.Stafford is currently in concussion protocol after the team discovered the injury doing standard checks. The Rams believe he suffered the injury during their Week 9 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."I can't answer that," McVay said when asked if Stafford has a concussion. The 34-year-old will have to go through a full football workload to be cleared from the protocol for Sunday's game, according to Rodrigue. Stafford was limited at practice Friday.McVay added they can decide on Stafford's game status up to 90 minutes before kickoff, per Rodrigue.Backup quarterback John Wolford is expected to start if Stafford cannot go.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 10 best bets: Spread, moneyline, total, and teaser
Call me foolish but count me as someone who thought the Raiders (-2) might be good with the score 17-0 against the Jaguars. But once a choker always a choker, as Las Vegas coughed up its third 17-point lead of the season, and with that, a winning week becomes a losing week. That's evidence of the razor-thin line in betting the NFL.BET TYPELAST WEEKSEASON (units)ATS trio1-1-1 (-0.1)13-11-3 (+0.9)ML upset-15-4 (+5.6)Totals13-6 (-3.6)Teasers-1.23-6 (-4.2)TOTAL-1.3-1.3Best bets ATSSteelers +1.5The Steelers are optimistic that T.J. Watt will be back Sunday, and if that's the case, this line is just incorrect. That's how much Watt means to Pittsburgh's defense. Even if the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year doesn't return, another massive factor in Pittsburgh's season has been the list of its opponents. Depending on how you measure it, the Steelers have played the toughest slate so far this season.Coming out of their bye week, the Steelers should have a better grip on what plays Kenny Pickett should be running since their transition to him as the quarterback of the future was blurred for two weeks, then included a prime-time game in Miami and a trip to Philadelphia. Back home, and getting the Saints on a short week after New Orleans got physically overwhelmed Monday, should put Pittsburgh in a position to have its best performance of the season.Broncos +3 (-115)Speaking of bye weeks, the Broncos might have stumbled into something in London. Their offense turned efficient after opting to go up-tempo against the Jaguars, so Denver may opt to run its offense at a quicker pace. Normally, it shouldn't be that simple, but whether it's Ryan Tannehill or Malik Willis under center for the Titans, Tennessee's 26th-best offense in yards per play shouldn't be able to make Denver pay for any quick drives.A rested Broncos defense can hold up against Derrick Henry and the Titans' run game. This should look like the Titans' matchup with the Colts where Tennessee couldn't score an offensive touchdown but without the pick-6 from the quarterback heading to the bench.Dolphins -3 (-120)It wouldn't be the first time, but I might be on the wrong side of history in liking the Dolphins here, given that the line has come down toward a field goal. The last we saw the Browns, they were 3.5-point home underdogs to the Bengals, and now they're the same price on the road in Miami. In their three road games, Cleveland has faced passing offenses run by Baker Mayfield, Marcus Mariota, and the Ravens in the rain. The Dolphins have yet to lose a game that Tua Tagovailoa has started and finished, so their metrics are skewed by the time he missed. The Browns' offense will have its usual success rushing, but we'll bet against its ability to keep up with the Dolphins, and maybe Bradley Chubb makes as much of an impact defensively for Miami as his cousin Nick does for Cleveland.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Texans +190This moneyline has come down since its opening because the market realized that despite their record, the Giants can't be near -300 against anybody. That said, we'll still pick the Texans to pull off an upset in New York at the shorter number. The Giants were flying high heading into their bye, feeling good even after a loss in Seattle. However, they have the same holes defensively as Houston, with both averaging 5.5 opponent yards per carry.New York's secondary has thinned out due to injury, while the Texans' gets better by the week with rookies Jalen Pitre and Derek Stingley gaining more experience. Elsewhere on the injury report, Evan Neal won't be on the Giants' offensive line, whereas Maliek Collins may return for Houston's D-line.Best total betCardinals / Rams under 40.5 pointsEven if Matthew Stafford (unlikely) and Kyler Murray (expected) play, these offenses are both sneaky awful with the only plus-option being a throw to a star receiver. The problem for the Rams is that the Cardinals are one of the few teams to defend Cooper Kupp well - 22 receptions for 231 yards in their last four meetings. The problem for DeAndre Hopkins is the general presence of Jalen Ramsey; Hopkins had just nine catches on 20 targets in two games last season. With both top weapons less likely to be the difference-maker, taking the under is the best bet in a game where the spread is in flux.Best 6-point teaserBroncos +9 / Steelers +7.5We don't need to get too deep into the weeds here since it's a rare instance when two of our favorite spread bets also qualify as a valuable teaser, but we'll dare either Willis or Tannehill, and Andy Dalton in Pittsburgh, to beat us by two scores against quality defenses in tough turnaround spots.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Schultz: 11 NFL rookies who deserve more recognition at midseason
theScore's NFL insider Jordan Schultz offers a selection of five offensive and six defensive rookies who should be getting more notice at the halfway mark of the season.Isaiah Likely, TE, RavensAfter a dominant collegiate career at Coastal Carolina, Baltimore drafted the super-talented tight end with speed and hands in the fourth round to pair alongside All-Pro Mark Andrews. Likely delivered the game's first touchdown Monday night against the Saints with Andrews out, and he had six catches for 77 yards and a touchdown the week before against Tampa Bay."His skill set makes him an exciting prospect," a scout told me. "He's the classic tight end teams are looking for in today's game. Now you've got your linebackers on a guy who's big and can run. That's what offensive coordinators look for." Cooper Neill / Getty ImagesAlec Pierce, WR, ColtsThe Colts receiver is Jordy Nelson 2.0. Although Jordy was thicker, their profiles are similar physically and athletically. Both have ideal size, know how to run routes, get separation, and make tough catches. But Pierce is a better athlete - he's shiftier, twitchier, wirier, and jumps higher. Before Sam Ehlinger replaced Matt Ryan at quarterback, Pierce put together a nice four-game stretch with 18 catches, 271 yards, and a touchdown, displaying the clutch playmaking chops that prompted Indy to take him in the second round. At 6-foot-3, 211 pounds with 4.41 speed and a 40.5-inch vertical, he's your classic "X" receiver.Cade Otton, TE, BucsI was extremely bullish on the Buccaneers tight end entering the draft. He's a massive man with quick feet - a truly special athlete at the position. "His upside is exciting," a personnel director told me. "He reminds me a bit of Mark Andrews. Similar frames with natural strength. As he grows into his body more, he's got a chance to become a matchup problem. I'm not saying he's Andrews, but that's how you can use him to your favor."The 6-foot-5, 247-pound Otton was a part of history last week as Tom Brady capped off his record 55th-comeback win with Otten's TD grab. Earlier in the drive, we saw the rookie's speed when he ran a perfect seam route for a critical 28-yard pickup. We've certainly exhausted the "what's wrong with Tom Brady" conversation by now, but if he and the Bucs are to salvage the season, I believe Otton can become the second-half X factor. He experienced some coaching upheaval during his time at Washington, and as a result, he never really got the opportunity to showcase his immense range of skills - that's why he was available in the fourth round. But similar to Likely, Otten has first-round talent. Brady seems to recognize that, as well.Jahan Dotson, WR, CommandersI can't not include him here, even though he hasn't played since Week 4 due to a hamstring injury. Despite Carson Wentz's ineptitude, Dotson had been Mr. Consistent for a Commanders' offense that was anything but. One of the things teams loved about Dotson was how smart of a route runner he was. Not only does he understand how to beat press coverage but also when and how to break off a route for his quarterback and when to sit in a zone. It's why he amassed four touchdowns in his four games. Add in his sensational ballerina act on TD catches like this, and you've got a major weapon moving forward.Abe Lucas, OL, SeahawksThe Seahawks had a monster draft - Charles Cross, Tariq Woolen, Coby Bryant - but we can't forget about Lucas, the right tackle from Washington State, where he earned all-conference honors in all four seasons. He joined me on The Schultz Report recently, and one thing I learned was that he played tight end in high school, meaning he's got more athleticism and foot speed than offensive line prospects who've played the position from a young age because they're bigger than everyone else.Per PFF, Lucas' 92.9% pass block win rate ranks first among rookie tackles, second among rookie offensive linemen (behind Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum), and top 50 among all NFL offensive linemen.Martin Emerson, CB, BrownsThere is a boatload of terrific rookie cornerbacks, but Cleveland's third-rounder is one who still isn't getting enough credit. "As sure-handed a tackler at corner that I've ever evaluated," the scout told me. To that point, Emerson's confidence - he started in the SEC as a true freshman - toughness, and coverage skills have held up for the Browns.Facing Joe Burrow and the red-hot Bengals, Emerson was targeted 10 times and didn't allow a single first down while giving up just two catches for eight yards against WR Tee Higgins. The former Mississippi State Bulldog ranks 17th overall out of the 110 CBs graded by PFF. Quinn Harris / Getty ImagesJalen Pitre, S, TexansI loved Pitre's tape at Baylor: Physical, mean, fast, and he can also play the nickel. He's exactly what you'd want in a defensive back, and he's been all that and more through nine weeks. The Texans got themselves a star. Pitre not only has the lateral quickness to play inside but the upper-body strength to bully slot receivers at the line. That's his gift.Jaquan Brisker, S, BearsBrisker is another guy whose college tape was so good that you knew he'd be a day-one contributor. He's been even better than that for the Bears. The former Penn State star, who ranks second among rookie defensive backs in solo and total tackles and first in sacks, just flies around the ball. You can blitz with him, you can spy with him, you can put him in zone or man - a defensive Swiss Army knife.Jack Jones, CB, PatriotsYes, another defensive back, but all these dudes are balling right now. It's even crazier in Jones' case because the Patriots pegged him to "replace" J.C. Jackson, who signed a massive deal with the Chargers after earning All-Pro honors a year ago. Jones - a fourth-rounder out of Arizona State - has a pick-six of Aaron Rodgers and five passes defensed. Opponents also have minus-11.9 expected points added when they throw his way in coverage, which is second behind only Sauce Gardner among rookie corners, per NFL Next Gen Stats."Really smart," a defensive coach told me. "He's tough to trick because he's clearly digesting the film, but he's got the tools to go make those big plays." David Becker / Getty ImagesJermaine Johnson, DE, JetsThe Jets defensive end should have been a top-10 pick. He is an explosive physical pass-rusher with counter moves and a motor to match. I thought he played his best game of the season against the Bills, and not just because he sacked Josh Allen. "He's got a chance to become a three-down guy, and I think that's surprised some people," the personnel director told me. "We knew he was a good rusher, but I don't think everyone knew he would be someone you can plug in for 45-plus plays. That's where he's headed long-term."Sam Williams, DE, CowboysSpeaking of pass-rushers, how about Sam Williams in Dallas? The talented edge dominated against the Lions with two sacks, proving why he was so well-regarded entering the draft. "Williams has a great first step and great feet, too," the scout told me. "Probably one of the three most physically gifted pass-rushers in that draft."Jordan Schultz is theScore's NFL insider and senior NBA reporter. Steelers' Watt 'glad to be back' after 7-game absence
Pittsburgh Steelers star linebacker T.J. Watt announced Friday that he'll play against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday."It's been a long time coming," Watt said, according to Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I feel very very good about the week that I've had.""I'm glad to be back," the reigning Defensive Player of the Year added, per Mark Kaboly of The Athletic.Watt hasn't played since suffering a pectoral injury in Week 1. The 28-year-old's return was then delayed by arthroscopic knee surgery in October. His return is a major boost to the Steelers, who are coming off a bye after dropping to 2-6 with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8. Cooks 'frustrated' over situation with Texans: 'I want to win'
Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks voiced frustration with his situation Thursday after not being dealt at the Nov. 1 trade deadline."I'm human. I'm frustrated, absolutely," Cooks told reporters, including Shaun Bijani of 610 KILT-AM. "I want to win. That's not the case. That's what's going on. That's the way I express my emotion. I think we all want to win. We're all frustrated in some sense. That's where I stand with that."The Texans were in talks to trade the veteran wide receiver to the Dallas Cowboys before the deadline, sources told Jordan Schultz, theScore's NFL insider. The trade didn't materialize because the Texans refused to pay any of the $18 million Cooks is guaranteed next season, per Schultz.Cooks missed last week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles after being excused from both practices leading up to last Thursday's matchup."Last week, as you know, coach said if you don't practice, you don't play. As for everything else, I'm keeping that internal," Cooks said. The Texans are 1-6-1 and are currently in line for the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. Cooks has two years remaining on his deal as the Texans continue to rebuild."How I'm feeling right now, like I said, take a day-by-day process," Cooks said when asked if he wants to stay in Houston long term. "I'm here now for the time being. As far as everything else getting worked out, we'll keep that internal."Cooks was back at practice on Thursday and is expected to play on Sunday against the New York Giants, according to Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc.
