You can also listen to the Week 9 preview episode of theScore Fantasy Football Podcast.StartAaron Rodgers, Packersvs. Lions John Fisher / Getty Images Sport / GettyIt's been a rough season for Rodgers, who hasn't topped 17 fantasy points in a game through the first eight weeks.Fortunately for him - and the Packers - help is on the way in the form of the Lions' defense.Detroit has been the second-easiest matchup for opposing passers. More specifically, in fives games with at least one of D'Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown healthy, the Lions found themselves in a shootout, surrendering weekly fantasy finishes of QB4, QB5, QB9, QB2, and most recently, QB1 overall.Rodgers will get a boost if top receiver Allen Lazard can return from the shoulder injury that forced him to miss last week's contest, but either way, he's poised for his best performance of the year.Boone's projection: 297 passing yards, 3 passing TDsOther QBs to start
Seahawks' Smith not surprised by breakout: I 'know exactly what I can do'
Geno Smith's hot start to the 2022 NFL season may have come out of nowhere to many around the league, but the Seattle Seahawks quarterback isn't surprised at all."You've got to be on it every single day," Smith said Thursday of maintaining a pro mentality, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson. "A lot of people wish they were in this position, and I'm grateful to have worked myself into this position. Also, knowing who I am. I'm very set in who I am and know exactly what I can do. So I never bought into the narrative that's been out there."Smith, who joined Seattle in 2019 to back up Russell Wilson, beat out Drew Lock for the Seahawks' starting quarterback role in the offseason after the team traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos in March. After missing the playoffs just twice with Wilson under center from 2012-21, the Seahawks were expected to rebuild in 2022. Instead, they've been one of the season's biggest surprises and currently lead the NFC West at 5-3.Smith - a backup for most of his NFL career - has passed for 1,924 yards and 13 touchdowns against three interceptions while posting a league-high 72.7% completion rate."I haven't played in a bunch of years aside from preseason, and I think people are now getting a chance to see me play in this type of offense with these types of players," the 32-year-old said.He added: "I didn't just get this good over the course of one offseason. I think that's mostly narrative, and a lot of that stuff is media driven. But when it comes down to me, people where I'm from know who I am."West Virginia, I just got inducted into the (school's) Hall of Fame, so people in college football know who I am. The New York Jets as well, the (New York) Giants, the (Los Angeles) Chargers, and Seattle."So people have continued to let me know that if I just keep working hard that things will happen for you, and that's what I did."Smith spent his first four NFL seasons with the Jets after they drafted him in the second round in 2013. He started 30 games with the team before being released. He then had one-season stints with the Giants (2017) and Chargers (2018).Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Saints' Thomas set for toe surgery, likely to miss rest of year
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas is set to undergo toe surgery and isn't expected to return this season, head coach Dennis Allen announced Thursday, according to Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football.The Saints will place Thomas, who dislocated his second toe, on injured reserve."The toe did not respond how we were hoping," Allen told reporters, including Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Advocate.Thomas was expected to be New Orleans' top wideout this season after returning from an ankle issue that cost him most of the past two seasons. However, he missed the team's last five games due to injury.A former Offensive Player of the Year winner, Thomas has played only 10 contests dating back to 2020. He missed the entire 2021 campaign due to a setback from an ankle injury initially suffered the year prior. He suited up for just seven games in 2020.The 29-year-old has caught 16 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns this season. The Saints have come out to a disappointing 3-5 record to start the campaign.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Ravens' Bateman to undergo season-ending foot surgery
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman will undergo season-ending Lisfranc surgery for a foot injury, head coach John Harbaugh announced Thursday.Harbaugh said it was Bateman's decision to have the procedure. The 22-year-old missed two weeks earlier in the season with the foot issue before suffering a setback in Week 8. The Ravens initially predicted Bateman was facing another two-week absence.Harbaugh said it's likely recently signed veteran DeSean Jackson will play Monday against the New Orleans Saints.Bateman is third on the Ravens in receiving yards (285) and tied for fourth in catches with 15. Meanwhile, his average of 19 yards per catch ranks third in the NFL.Baltimore will likely rely even more on its tight end duo of All-Pro Mark Andrews and rookie Isaiah Likely.Jackson and James Proche are set for expanded roles behind Devin Duvernay and Demarcus Robinson.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. TNF player props: What to do with an ugly 'dog in Eagles-Texans
Last season, we rocked and rolled our way to the Super Bowl with music-themed Thursday Night Football player props, joyfully celebrating the start of a new NFL week. This year, we'll use an episode from "Must See TV" cornerstone "Seinfeld" each week to remind us that betting is supposed to be fun, even when an absurd series of events leads to a losing bet."It's supposed to be really bad, really bad ... I almost feel like I've seen it already and walked out on it." - Jerry to Elaine about the movie he was forced to go see a second time without her knowing he's seen it.In Season 3, Episode 4 of "Seinfeld," Jerry gets stuck watching the nastiest dog. Football fans can likely relate, given they may walk out on this one early - although most of us would still watch the NFL even if our hair was on fire. It's "Prognosis Negative" for the Texans on Thursday Night Football. With a rare 14-point road favorite, the Eagles are expected to run around, over, and through Houston.'The Dog'Jerry opens the episode in typical fashion, with a stand-up joke about pilots telling the passengers they'll make up time in the air. Thirty years later, anytime you hear that type of announcement, it's still a tried and true joke: "If you can go faster, why don't you just go as fast as you can all the time?"Last week, the Titans decided the best way to reach their destination would be to hand the ball off 45 times against the Texans, racking up 314 yards on the ground. A week earlier, Josh Jacobs gashed them for 143 yards on 20 carries. With Houston owning the second-worst run defense in the league, you wonder why any team wouldn't just run the ball down the field if you could do so that easily all the time. Like Kramer's unseen girlfriend Ellen, Houston's defensive personality is a "potential science exhibit."The Eagles don't need an invitation to run the football, and on a short week, I'll bet they do so with multiple rushers to land this victory easily. The prop market is fully aware of this, though, moving Miles Sanders' rushing yards total up 12.5% - 9.5 yards higher than it's ever been.Instead, we'll bet what seems like a fade of Jalen Hurts, but it's actually a bet backing Philadelphia to find offensive success through rushing and chunk plays in the passing game. Hurts has cleared 28.5 pass attempts just once in the Eagles' last four games, and we don't expect he'll need to throw much in this one.Pick: Jalen Hurts under 28.5 pass attempts (-130)A TD that's definitely going to happenGeorge and Elaine are used to having Jerry around when they hang out, effectively feeling like "friends-in-law." With such an obvious angle - Philly dominating Houston on the ground - we'll add related "bets-in-law."Unless the Texans have been drinking Morning Thunder - the tea Jerry doesn't know has caffeine in it - Sanders will get more than a few opportunities at the goal line and likely won't be stopped. He'll exclaim, "I feel great!" without knowing why it was so easy to find the end zone. The last few weeks, these bets have felt the way Jerry looks when he's throwing up - winners are seemingly coming at any moment, only to, well ... not. However, after going touchdown-less last season, Sanders has scored in four of the seven games played, meaning there's more than a 50/50 chance he'll do so Thursday.Pick: Miles Sanders anytime touchdown (+100)A TD that probably won't happen ... but maybe it does"Prediction: I never see you or him again for the rest of my life." Jerry's classic line applies to the unlikeable characters on the worst football team in the NFL and its offense, so betting any of the Texans to score a touchdown feels like a long shot, and I would rather dog-sit Farfel than rely on a specific Houston player to score at the available prices. In fact, Kramer might look at the Texans and say, "You contribute nothing to society. You're just taking up space. How could I bet on someone like you?! I couldn't respect myself!" Meanwhile, all the obvious picks on the Eagles are priced as such. Except for Boston Scott.Scott had eight touchdowns in 10 games played last season but hasn't scored since the first game of this campaign. He's still good for 10-15 snaps per game, but he may get a few more if this contest gets out of hand by the second half. Scott's a better second option than "Ponce de Leon," and he, too, could take advantage of Houston's shoddy defense.Pick: Boston Scott anytime touchdown (+475)How to bet: The first two bets should be single-unit wagers to win a unit on minus prices and more than a unit on a plus-money bet. The last wager should be smaller, trying to win back your standard unit size.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there’s a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Report: Rams want Akers back, turned down trade offers
The Los Angeles Rams turned down multiple trade offers for running back Cam Akers before Tuesday's trade deadline and are working with his agent in hopes he'll play for the team again this season, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The 23-year-old is expected to return to practice Thursday for the Rams, Pelissero adds.Akers has been inactive for the last two games for personal reasons and was reportedly on the trade block because he "has philosophical and football-related differences with head coach Sean McVay," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport."I would say it's more like we're dealing with things internally," McVay said last month. "This is kind of unchartered territory, and I think the biggest thing is, out of respect for the situation, we want to keep it internally."The Rams offered two first-round picks and Akers to the Carolina Panthers for defensive end Brian Burns, but the Panthers declined, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.Akers has 51 carries for 151 yards and one touchdown this season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Tua: Dolphins 'capable' of winning Super Bowl
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa believes the Miami Dolphins could be more than just playoff contenders this season."We're not afraid to talk about Super Bowls here," Tagovailoa said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. "We're not afraid to talk about going to a playoff game, having the opportunity to go to one, and then, hopefully, winning one.""I would say I have full belief that we are capable (of winning a Super Bowl)," he added. The Dolphins have turned heads through the first eight weeks of the season. They own a 5-3 record with quality wins over the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens. Miami sports a 5-1 record with Tagovailoa as a starter this year. The team's success comes as little surprise to the Dolphins signal-caller. "Throughout OTAs and throughout training camp, we could see the potential that we had as a team, offensively and defensively," he said.Miami attempted to reinforce ahead of the trade deadline what the signal-caller noticed in the offseason by making a couple of splashy moves for pass-rusher Bradley Chubb and running back Jeff Wilson Jr. The deals earned the praise from Tagovailoa."We just have to put the pieces together, get those guys going with us, and let's see where it takes us," he said. The Dolphins have been proactive in their attempt to field a competitive roster this season. The AFC East club traded for star wideout Tyreek Hill and signed free agents Terron Armstead and Melvin Ingram.Miami hasn't made a postseason appearance since 2016 and hasn't participated in the Big Game since Super Bowl XIX following the 1984 season.General manager Chris Grier was reluctant to predict what the Dolphins will do this season, only saying he has "a good team that has a chance to compete and win some games in the future."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Claypool: No bad blood with Steelers after trade to Bears
Wide receiver Chase Claypool insists he doesn't have any hard feelings toward the Pittsburgh Steelers after he was dealt to the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.Pittsburgh sent Claypool to Chicago in exchange for a 2023 second-round pick ahead of the league's trade deadline."I was grateful for the opportunity," Claypool said Wednesday. "I don't have any bad blood with anyone there. It was hard to take offense to it because I know it was just the nature of the business."Claypool noted he didn't request a trade despite voicing his frustration with his usage last month."I feel like I didn't have the full opportunity to show what I can do this year, but I think I've been able to show that in the past," he added Wednesday. The addition of Claypool provides second-year quarterback Justin Fields with an additional weapon alongside Darnell Mooney in the passing game. Chicago currently averages a league-low 126.9 yards passing per contest. Mooney leads all Bears pass-catchers this season with 25 receptions for 364 yards through eight weeks.Claypool made his NFL debut in 2020 after Pittsburgh drafted him in the second round. The Notre Dame product made an immediate impact with 62 receptions for 872 yards as a rookie. He followed that up with another 800-plus-yard display in 2021.He has 32 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown this season. It's unclear if Claypool will play when the Bears host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.Meanwhile, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday's deal came about because Pittsburgh feels "really comfortable" with its depth at the inside receiver position. He also pointed to the emergence of tight end Pat Freiermuth as part of the reason why Pittsburgh moved on from Claypool.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Snyder exploring sale of Commanders, team reportedly under criminal investigation
The Washington Commanders hired BofA Securities "to consider potential transactions" involving the franchise, the team announced Wednesday."The Snyders remain committed to the team, all of its employees, and its countless fans to putting the best product on the field and continuing the work to set the gold standard for workplaces in the NFL," the Commanders said in a statement.Washington's announcement came just hours before an ESPN report revealed that the organization is the subject of a criminal investigation opened by the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. The probe is reportedly looking into allegations of financial impropriety and deceptive business practices.Owner Dan Snyder reportedly already received at least four calls from groups interested in buying the team, a source told Forbes' Mike Ozanian.Snyder reportedly could be looking to sell the entire franchise or just a minority stake."We are exploring all options," a Commanders spokesperson told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Snyder's ownership of the team has been widely criticized due to alleged workplace misconduct, sexual harassment, and financial impropriety, leading to investigations by the NFL and Congress. There is still no timetable for the league's most recent investigation, led by attorney Mary Jo White, to be completed, reports NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said in mid-October that he would support the decision to remove Snyder as owner of the Commanders. The 57-year-old has owned the Washington franchise since 1999. It would take 24 of the other 31 owners to vote for Snyder's removal. The Denver Broncos were the last NFL franchise to be sold. The Walton-Penner family took over the AFC West club in June for a U.S. sports-franchise record of $4.65 billion. Before that, David Tepper purchased the Carolina Panthers for $2.2 billion in 2018.The Commanders are worth an estimated $5.6 billion, according to Forbes.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 9 teasers: Eyeing market moves to guide the way
Week 8 only provided tease-up options with mixed results. The Jets lingered, while the Saints and Broncos didn't need any points. Alternatively, the Texans and Rams couldn't hang with their opponents at home.Week 9 provides a similar setup to last week, where if you want to continue to play to the idea of a close game, you'll have a few options, especially with some line moves providing a hint of where the value lies. Some games don't have a teaser-worthy point spread. For example, the Patriots have moved from -6.5 down to 5.5-point favorites at home to the Colts. Teasing New England would bring the spread through zero, wasting valuable price points around an improbable tie. Instead of paying -270 to tease the Patriots down in that scenario, they are available for -240 on the moneyline at theScore Bet, and you wouldn't need to pair it with anything.Teasing the Colts up to +11.5 seems appealing, as it would get the key numbers through a touchdown, but you're already winning on a 3-point or 4-point margin at a -110 price. Getting +6 to +11 over a long sample size isn't worth the price hike to -270.There is one example of a tease-down situation with the Bengals lined as 7.5-point favorites at home to the suddenly dangerous Panthers. Let's use the lone favorite of just over a touchdown as an example of the value of teasing a favorite down.ALT. SPREADODDSBengals -6.5-145Bengals -5.5-175Bengals -4.5-188Bengals -3.5-210Bengals -2.5-315Bengals -1.5-325Notice the pricing significantly jumps once you move across the key number of -3, showing the importance of capturing that number in NFL betting. More importantly, the Bengals' alternative spread (-1.5) is priced at -325, which is obviously a much larger price than getting them at -1.5 with a teaser leg at -270.To get a good deal on the Bengals (-1.5), we must pair them with another bet and win both to cash the ticket. Fortunately, we can choose that other leg from our weekly "teaser basket" using what we know about key numbers.Teaser basketLet's look at the mathematically optimal plays available for Week 9:TEAMSPREADTEASER LEGBengals-7.5-1.5Jaguars+2+8Seahawks+2+8Saints+2.5+8.5Despite getting shutout in New Orleans on Sunday, the Raiders have taken money from the game opening at pick'em. Whether the market's disinterested in the Jaguars after their trip to London or there's reason to buy the idea that Las Vegas should be getting healthier in Florida for the week, buying the Jags at any price would be going against the market's first move toward the Raiders. On the flip side, the Seahawks opened as 3-point underdogs to the Cardinals, and the market quickly moved on Seattle. If you're looking to follow that move, you have missed out on getting the flat three on a traditional point spread bet, but losing out on +9 as a teaser leg isn't usually the end of the world.Even more drastically, the Saints have moved all the way from +3.5 to +2.5 in their Monday Night Football matchup against the Ravens, but, like with the Seahawks, there's still a chance to back the Saints via a 6-point teaser.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Winners and losers from the NFL trade deadline
theScore's NFL insider, Jordan Schultz, examines Tuesday's most meaningful trades to see who won and lost at the trade deadline.WinnersVikings: T.J. Hockenson is a big-time talent and matchup nightmare who can really run. His move to Minnesota from Detroit will do wonders for All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who hasn't caught a touchdown since Week 1. Hockenson will love head coach Kevin O'Connell's tight end-friendly offense. Expect Hockenson to be deployed all over the field, even as a wideout. To quote one scout I spoke with: "That offense just got a lot better."Hockenson, 25, is on pace to finish this season with career numbers across the board. In fact, no tight end in the league is averaging more yards per catch (15.2). The No. 8 pick in the 2019 draft has a vertical factor that few other tight ends possess.Bradley Chubb: It was always going to be Miami for the Pro Bowl pass-rusher. The Jets were interested, as were the Rams and others, but it was Miami all along. Chubb now heads to an emerging Dolphins defense chock-full of talented young players. One of those players is second-year defensive end Jaelen Phillips. Now the Dolphins can bookend their edges with Phillips and Chubb - a major win. They are both in the top 10 in Next Gen Stats' pass-rush win rate for edge rushers: Chubb is third at 27% and Phillips is 10th at 23%.Sources tell me Chubb and his agent are working on securing a long-term extension, although they aren't necessarily in a rush either. To recap: He gets out of rudderless Denver and heads to South Beach where he's about to get paid. Not a bad deal.Nyheim Hines: Going to Buffalo is a dream scenario for the former Colts running back. Given his skill set as a multidimensional pass-catcher, Hines will complement Devin Singletary, a classic north-south runner. Hines has a ton of wiggle to his game and will love the dual-threat nature of Josh Allen, who the scout tells me "will make Hines a better player."

Giants GM: I'll speak with Odell when he's healthy
New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen left open the possibility of reuniting with free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. down the road."He's been a good player," Schoen said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "He's a guy we would consider and talk to when he's healthy."Beckham, who is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered in the Super Bowl, dropped by the Giants' facility to visit former teammates in October. Schoen said he was unaware Beckham was there until after he had left.It was previously reported the LSU product is targeting a mid-November return. The 29-year-old spent his first five seasons with the Giants after they drafted him 12th overall in 2014. He began his tenure with three consecutive Pro Bowl campaigns before being dealt to the Cleveland Browns in 2019.He was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams midseason last year after the Browns cut him, and he played a crucial role in the Rams' journey to Super Bowl LVI.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Colts trade Nyheim Hines to Bills
The Indianapolis Colts traded running back Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. The Colts will receive running back Zack Moss and a conditional sixth-round draft pick that can become a fifth-rounder, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.Hines was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He joins a running back room that includes Devin Singletary and rookie James Cook. The 25-year-old brings a unique skill set to the Bills' offense. He should help quarterback Josh Allen on third down, as he has 1,725 receiving yards in his five-year career.Hines is signed through the 2024 season. He agreed to a three-year, $18.6-million contract extension with the Colts in September 2021.Moss, a third-round pick in the 2020 draft, struggled to get playing time. He has 17 carries for 91 yards this season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Broncos trade Bradley Chubb to Dolphins
The Denver Broncos are trading linebacker Bradley Chubb and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins, the Broncos announced Tuesday. In return, the Broncos receive the San Francisco 49ers' 2023 first-round pick (which Miami acquired before the 2021 draft), the Dolphins' 2024 fourth-rounder, and running back Chase Edmonds. The trade is pending physicals.Miami is expected to work out a long-term contract with the newly acquired Chubb, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Many teams were interested in Chubb heading into Tuesday's deadline, according to theScore's Jordan Schultz.A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb adds much-needed pass-rush help to a Dolphins team ranked 23rd in sacks. He has 5.5 in eight games this season.Chubb, 26, joins a pass-rushing unit led by 23-year-old Jaelan Phillips, whom the Dolphins drafted in the first round back in 2021.For the Broncos, they add Edmonds to a running back room that already includes Melvin Gordon and Latavius Murray. Edmonds has 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries this season.Miami also acquired running back Jeff Wilson from the 49ers on Tuesday for a 2025 fifth-rounder, according to Schefter.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Steelers trade for Commanders' Jackson
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Washington Commanders cornerback William Jackson, the teams announced Tuesday. The Commanders receive a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick in return for Jackson and a conditional 2025 seventh-rounder.The veteran reportedly requested an exit from Washington several weeks ago due to a poor scheme fit.Jackson signed a three-year, $40.5-million contract as a free agent in 2021 but struggled to live up to expectations. The 30-year-old spent the first five years of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.Pittsburgh needed to upgrade a struggling secondary, which has given up the most passing touchdowns (17, tied with the Kansas City Chiefs) and the second-most passing yards (2,218) through eight weeks.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Steelers ship Claypool to Bears for 2nd-round pick
The Chicago Bears acquired wide receiver Chase Claypool for a 2023 second-round pick in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced. The draft pick is the Bears' original second-round selection and not the one received from the Baltimore Ravens in the Roquan Smith deal.Claypool will provide a vertical threat for quarterback Justin Fields and help fill out the Bears' wide receiver room. Darnell Mooney leads the team with 364 receiving yards, while no other wideout has surpassed 200 yards on the year. Fields has also failed to throw for more than 200 yards in all but one game this season.Drafted in the second round of the 2020 draft, Claypool has recorded 12 receiving touchdowns and averaged 13.4 yards per catch in his career. He made a name almost immediately as a rookie, logging 62 receptions for 873 yards and nine touchdowns. He also added another two scores on the ground. The 24-year-old's production has dipped this season in a sluggish Steelers offense. Claypool is averaging a career-low 9.7 yards per reception and has put up 311 receiving yards.Claypool was speculated as a trade candidate leading up to the deadline. Pittsburgh reinforced the wide receiver position this offseason by drafting George Pickens and Calvin Austin. The franchise also gave Diontae Johnson a two-year extension.Claypool has one more year remaining on his rookie deal following the 2022 campaign.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lions send Hockenson to Vikings in trade between division rivals
The Detroit Lions have traded tight end T.J. Hockenson to the Minnesota Vikings in a rare deal between division rivals, the Vikings announced Tuesday.Minnesota is sending a 2023 second-rounder and 2024 third-round selection for Hockenson, a 2023 fourth-round pick, and a 2024 conditional fourth-rounder.The Lions ship off Hockenson after he played three-plus seasons with the team. Detroit selected the 25-year-old eighth overall in 2019. He made 42 starts for the franchise and earned one Pro Bowl berth for his play in 2020 after catching 67 passes for 723 yards and six touchdowns. The tight end is off to the best start of his career in 2022, with career highs in yards per reception (15.2) and per game (56.4). He's put up 395 receiving yards and three scores across seven starts. It's the first time the Lions have made an in-division trade involving a player since 1998, according to ESPN. Detroit previously traded with Minnesota to move up to select wide receiver Jameson Williams in the 2022 NFL Draft.Hockenson boosts a Vikings tight end room that recently lost starter Irv Smith Jr. to a high ankle sprain. Smith is expected to miss 8-10 weeks due to the injury, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Minnesota will have Hockenson under contract through the 2023 season. The Indianapolis Colts have relieved offensive coordinator Marcus Brady of his duties, the team announced.Brady's termination comes as Indianapolis ranks 30th in the NFL in scoring with an average of 16.1 points per game. Under Brady this season, the Colts have been held to 20 points or fewer in seven of their eight games. The Colts brought Brady onto their staff in 2018, where he started as an assistant quarterbacks coach. Indianapolis promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2021 following Nick Sirianni's departure. The franchise found success in Brady's first year as coordinator, averaging the ninth-most points per game with 26.5. Jonathan Taylor also rushed for a league-leading 1,811 yards during the campaign. The firing is the second major move the 3-4-1 Colts have made on offense after the team elected to bench veteran Matt Ryan in favor of second-year quarterback Sam Ehlinger last week.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 8 betting takeaways: The challenge of covering a big number
It seems like every time you watch the Bills, the offense is easily moving down the field while the defense is hitting so hard that opponents are hobbling off. Yet any team with a point spread over 10 is vulnerable to the backdoor cover.Three Week 8 games - Bills-Packers, Cowboys-Bears, and Eagles-Steelers - featured double-digit spreads. While only Buffalo couldn't cover, you'd most suspect Aaron Rodgers to score a backdoor touchdown in a pass-only situation over Kenny Pickett or Justin Fields. It isn't easy to get a big lead, keep it, and finish the game, so Dallas and Philadelphia should get more credit than simply "taking care of business." However, it's not like anyone's downgrading the Bills for only winning by 10 points. How ratings workWe look at the betting market's assessment of each team based on the closing lines from the previous week's games and then we estimate what each club is capable of going forward. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread before their most recent game. The number itself represents the percentage chance that a team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. The range column is my evaluation of each team's potential after seeing them play this season. Obviously, clubs don't perform at the same level every week; they play within a range. It's our job as handicappers to predict how they'll perform based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider a team's range may be.Rating before Week 8 kickoffTEAMRATINGRANGEBills8570-85Chiefs7065-80Eagles6850-75Buccaneers6650-80Ravens6255-7049ers6250-70Cowboys6240-70Bengals6150-70Dolphins5745-70Rams5650-70Chargers5645-65Vikings5645-65Patriots5640-60Packers5550-65Raiders5340-60Cardinals5240-60Colts4440-60Jaguars4430-50Jets4230-50Browns4240-65Titans4140-60Saints4140-60Seahawks4130-45Falcons3930-50Commanders3930-50Giants3925-50Broncos3930-60Steelers3835-50Lions3730-50Bears3330-45Panthers3020-45Texans2920-40Notable Week 8 resultsOddsmakers tried to warn us before Thursday night. Had the Buccaneers closed as 2-point underdogs to the Ravens, which is where they re-opened, their rating would be somewhere in the low 50s. The market refused to believe it, though, betting Tampa Bay back up into the role of favorite, limiting the team's drop. Will that change this week before the Bucs' divisional-round rematch with the Rams, who are due for a further downgrade of their own?Christian McCaffrey's addition means the 49ers can now play the odd game without Deebo Samuel and not suffer much in the short term, which is why that line didn't move much around pick'em.The Bengals got an artificially big boost from beating up on Atlanta at home in Week 7 despite losing Ja'Marr Chase, and you saw how well that worked out for them Monday night.Closing -3 on the road at the Jets means the Patriots didn't get downgraded for getting smoked by the Bears six days earlier, which was odd. Had the Jets gotten better quarterback play, they would've covered, if not won. Astute handicappers will downgrade the Pats despite the victory, and their opponent may have value this Sunday. If you were trying to get downgraded, you'd play exactly how the Raiders did in New Orleans. However, the Saints' win says more about them finally putting it all together. You should see New Orleans get quite an upgrade with a Monday night home game in the Superdome on the horizon. The Cardinals' rating is still frenetic with hopes that DeAndre Hopkins makes everything all better for Kyler Murray, but this is still a team doing just enough to get beat. With that being said, a muffed punt is the reason they didn't at least cover in Minnesota - which has a rating that seems set in cement at this point - and how can you predict special teams catastrophes? The Titans were this week's team to get dropped because their starting quarterback was out, and yet again, it didn't matter. Their division rival, the Colts, had the same issue and didn't get downgraded much at all. If there was ever an example of the coin-flip nature of covering spreads in the NFL, Indianapolis went from covering as a -3 favorite to losing outright on one excellent catch by Terry McLaurin.Ironically, the Seahawks and Broncos are both headed upward, with two different paths to get to league average. The Panthers saw their rating improve before their wild game in Atlanta and should keep moving up, leaving Houston in its rightful place as the NFL's worst team.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. NFL Power Rankings - Week 9: Ravens on the rise, Jets tumble
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. Philadelphia Eagles (7-0) Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 1Do you also feel like the Eagles get better every week? One of Philly's issues was completing more big plays in the passing game - Jalen Hurts was among football's worst passers in average depth of target through his first six appearances. But in Sunday's beatdown of the Steelers, 17.9% of Hurts' throws were deep (20-plus yards) as he posted one of the best performances of his career.2. Buffalo Bills (6-1)Previous Rank: 2After defeating the Packers on Sunday Night Football, the Bills have now beaten three former NFL MVPs this season to go along with the reigning Super Bowl champions. Buffalo easily leads the league with a 105-point differential, miles ahead of the Eagles, who rank second with 78.3. Kansas City Chiefs (5-2)Previous Rank: 3Owners of the NFL's top-ranked offense in expected points added (EPA) per play, the Chiefs were on a bye this week, and that should scare the Titans, their next opponent. Kansas City is 4-0 and averages 34 points per contest coming off its bye since Patrick Mahomes became the starter in 2018.4. Dallas Cowboys (6-2)Previous Rank: 4Dallas allowed 29 points to Chicago in Week 8 - the most it's given up all year - but the Cowboys also scored 49 on the back of Tony Pollard's three-touchdown outing. America's Team is proving itself as one of the NFL's most well-rounded clubs.5. Baltimore Ravens (5-3) Mike Ehrmann / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 8Week 8 was great for the Ravens. Yes, they were outscored again in the fourth quarter Thursday, but Baltimore looked very good in the second half versus the Bucs, with its offense averaging 7 yards per rushing attempt. Plus the team added some much-needed defensive help by acquiring star linebacker Roquan Smith from the Bears on Monday.6. Minnesota Vikings (6-1)Previous Rank: 7Could the Vikings be ranked higher? Their record says yes. But should they be? Given their unconvincing performances and relatively easy schedule so far, no. But fans in Minnesota should be happy with what they've seen. One-score games used to be a nightmare for the Vikings, but they're 5-0 in those situations this year.7. Miami Dolphins (5-3)Previous Rank: 9Tua Tagovailoa still doesn't get as much love as other star quarterbacks, but he's been the perfect QB for Miami when healthy. After torching Detroit on Sunday, Tagovailoa now leads the NFL with 9 yards per pass attempt and trails only Mahomes and Josh Allen in EPA per play.8. San Francisco 49ers (4-4)Previous Rank: 10It didn't take long for the 49ers to see what Christian McCaffrey is capable of. In his second game since he arrived from Carolina, the superstar running back became the first player since 2005 with a touchdown pass, catch, and rush in the same game. He also topped 30 yards passing, rushing, and receiving, becoming the first player to do so since ... himself in 2018.9. Seattle Seahawks (5-3)Previous Rank: 11The Seahawks' offense has been one of the year's biggest surprises, but we should probably start paying attention to the defense, too. Seattle, whose defensive unit was brutal to start the season, allowed only 15 points per game over the last three weeks, and in Week 8, it limited the Giants to 13 points, New York's worst mark this campaign.10. New York Giants (6-2) Steph Chambers / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 5The Seahawks poured cold water on the Giants' hot start this past weekend. Saquon Barkley's average of 2.65 yards per carry on Sunday was his lowest of the season despite punching in his fifth TD of the year. New York's rushing attack should be able to regain its footing and prove the team's early-season success had little to do with a favorable schedule.11. Tennessee Titans (5-2)Previous Rank: 12The Titans have found some momentum during their five-game winning streak. Derrick Henry continues to run over the opposition with four consecutive games of 100 or more yards on the ground. Perhaps it doesn't matter who lines up at QB as long as No. 22 is in the backfield.12. Cincinnati Bengals (4-4)Previous Rank: 6Even good teams are allowed to have bad games, but it can't just be a coincidence the Bengals scored only 13 points in their first game without Ja'Marr Chase. Cleveland had the third-worst scoring defense before Week 8, yet Cincy struggled to move the ball all night long. Chase is reportedly expected to miss at least four weeks with a hip injury, so the Bengals must find some answers soon.13. Los Angeles Chargers (4-3)Previous Rank: 14Even with the bye week in the books, the Chargers find themselves dealing with some unfortunate injuries. Regardless of who's missing from the lineup, the Bolts need to correct whatever's causing their defense to give up an average of 27 points and surrender 137.6 yards on the ground per game.14. Los Angeles Rams (3-4)Previous Rank: 13The reigning champions are off their game as the halfway point of the season approaches. Getting swept by their bitter rivals won't put a smile on the Rams' faces. What might improve the mood in the locker room, however, is boosting the team's woeful average of 68.4 rushing yards per game. The Buccaneers, the only team doing worse in that department, are on deck in Week 9.15. Atlanta Falcons (4-4) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 17The Falcons continue to prove preseason doubters wrong by not only reaching .500, but claiming top spot in the NFC South. Atlanta hasn't been first in the division at this point of the season since its last Super Bowl appearance in 2016. Kyle Pitts is finally starting to develop into the weapon that many projected he would be when he entered the league.16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-5)Previous Rank: 16The Buccaneers are searching for answers amid a three-game losing streak in which nothing is going right. Did Tom Brady really decide to unretire after 40 days to lead an offense that can only muster 18.3 points per game compared to last year's 30? Fortunately, the dismal NFC South race provides the Bucs with an opportunity to fulfill their postseason ambitions.17. New England Patriots (4-4)Previous Rank: 24Bill Belichick got a slight reprieve from criticism of his handling of the Pats' quarterback situation as Mac Jones finished with a 79.9 passer rating in an outing where he was hauled to the ground for six sacks. The offense also needs to improve its red-zone efficiency after scoring a TD on 11 of its 24 trips.18. New York Jets (5-3)Previous Rank: 15Zach Wilson's three-interception performance in Week 8 left many wondering about his franchise status. With an opportunistic defense that has generated 12 takeaways, the offense needs to stop giving gifts to the opposition if the Jets want to become real contenders.19. Washington Commanders (4-4)Previous Rank: 22Don't look now, but Washington is keeping pace in an exciting NFC East race with its third straight win. The Commanders appear to be thriving under the stewardship of Taylor Heinicke. Washington is 2-0 since Carson Wentz was placed on injured reserve, and Terry McLaurin continues to produce for the club in clutch moments.20. Arizona Cardinals (3-5) Adam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 18The Cardinals' frustration during their 3-5 start hasn't been hard to miss. Arizona is just two games back of the top spot in the NFC West even though, to date, the team hasn't beaten anyone with a .500 record. With a defense allowing 26.3 points per game, more shootouts could be on the horizon for Kliff Kingsbury and crew.21. Green Bay Packers (3-5)Previous Rank: 19Green Bay's slide continues with no real reason for optimism. The offense just doesn't have the weapons to move the ball consistently, let alone put many points on the board. At this point, it'll take a massive turnaround for the Packers to even make the playoffs.22. New Orleans Saints (3-5)Previous Rank: 26The Saints gave us a glimpse of what so many expected from them this season in a 24-0 shutout of the Raiders. Has the defense finally figured it out? Or is this team more like the one we saw in the first game of the season? The answer to that question will send New Orleans down one of two very different paths.23. Indianapolis Colts (3-4-1)Previous Rank: 21Playing in the AFC South still gives Indy some hope, but the quarterback change tells us that even the Colts have accepted this isn't their year. As was to be expected, turning to Sam Ehlinger in place of Matt Ryan didn't yield more promising results. The Colts are a mess.24. Cleveland Browns (3-5)Previous Rank: 28The Browns' blowout win over the Bengals on Monday night was a reminder of their potential, particularly when playing with a lead. Despite its five losses, this team's been just a few plays away from a much better record. Don't count Cleveland out yet.25. Las Vegas Raiders (2-5) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 20Just when it seemed like the Raiders could be primed for a run to save their season, they got shut out by the Saints, who previously hadn't been able to do anything right on defense. A busy offseason and the arrival of Josh McDaniels were supposed to help Las Vegas take the next step, but instead, this team has gotten worse.26. Denver Broncos (3-5)Previous Rank: 29We're not going to give the Broncos too much credit for barely beating the Jaguars in London - it was hardly a breakthrough. But a win is a win, and Denver has to hope that the positive momentum, along with the upcoming bye week, can help the offense get on track.27. Chicago Bears (3-5)Previous Rank: 23This season is all about Justin Fields' development. And with the Bears finally putting him in position to utilize his unique athletic ability, he's starting to show real signs of growth. The short-term results may not be impressive, especially with Chicago shipping off star players like Roquan Smith at the deadline, but the future is suddenly looking a lot more promising.28. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-6)Previous Rank: 25Make that five straight losses for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence's continued struggles after a hot start to the season are concerning. Could a home matchup with the Raiders be just what Jacksonville needs to get the offense going?29. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-6)Previous Rank: 27It's bizarre to see the Steelers sinking closer and closer to the basement of the NFL, but that's the world we live in now. Some glimmers of promise from Kenny Pickett would at least give Pittsburgh reasons for longer-term optimism. Four starts into his pro career, however, the Steelers are still waiting.30. Carolina Panthers (2-6) Todd Kirkland / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 30A heartbreaking loss to the Falcons can be taken as another recent sign of progress for Carolina. So far, the Panthers have looked a lot more competitive after firing Matt Rhule and turning to P.J. Walker at quarterback. It really may have been that simple.31. Detroit Lions (1-6)Previous Rank: 31All of our praise for the development of Detroit's offense early this season still stands. The problem is that the defense is so unbelievably bad that it almost doesn't matter how many points the Lions put on the board. Opponents are lighting them up on a weekly basis.32. Houston Texans (1-5-1)Previous Rank: 32Houston is firmly in the driver's seat for the No. 1 overall pick and the choice between Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud. It's tough to sit through a season like this, but it could be worth it.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Rams' McVay expects Kupp to play vs. Bucs following ankle injury
The Los Angeles Rams appear to have dodged disaster.Star receiver Cooper Kupp is expected to play in the Week 9 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, head coach Sean McVay announced, according to team reporter Stu Jackson."I think he'll be OK," McVay said Monday.Kupp suffered an ankle injury following a reception late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He walked off the field under his own power and had an apparent limp after the game. The All-Pro wideout is dealing with soft tissue swelling in his ankle but avoided any structural damage.Kupp recorded eight catches for 79 yards Sunday. He leads the Rams with 64 receptions for 686 yards and five touchdowns."I'm kicking myself for not running the ball again," McVay said postgame, according to Cameron DaSilva of USA Today. The Rams (3-4) will attempt to climb to .500 when they play the Buccaneers on Sunday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets' Saleh backs Wilson as starter despite 3-INT game vs. Patriots
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed Monday that the team is sticking with Zach Wilson at quarterback despite his shaky statistical production in recent games."We are 5-3 because he's done a great job taking care of the football and getting us in position to win football games," Saleh said."Avoiding all the sacks, being able to throw away the ball, keeping us on track, keeping us on schedule," the head coach added. "There's a lot of things that don't blow up the stat page, but from a coaching standpoint, there's a lot of things that he's done to keep us at least from imploding."Wilson is 4-1 since returning from a knee injury he sustained in the preseason but completed just 54.9% of his passes for 1,048 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions. He threw three interceptions in Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots and said he "had some boneheaded plays."Saleh called the three interceptions "critical mistakes" and criticized the quarterback's decision-making. However, he praised Wilson's explosive plays. The Jets will face the AFC-leading Buffalo Bills in Week 9.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. It's hard to imagine Kamara leaving New Orleans after he scored three touchdowns in a Week 8 win that kept the Saints just one game behind the NFC South lead - but where there's smoke, there's fire. The five-time Pro Bowler has been linked to trade rumors lately, and the Saints reportedly would require a McCaffrey-like package to trade Kamara, who's owed $575,000 for the remainder of the season and due base salaries of $9.4 million, $10.2 million, and $22.4 million over the next three years.Potential landing spots: Bills, RamsRoquan SmithEditor's note: This article was published before the Ravens' reported trade to acquire Smith. Kevin Sabitus / Getty Images Sport / GettySmith pushed for an exit from Chicago in the offseason but ultimately decided to play out his contract despite not signing an extension. With the Bears seemingly unwilling to make Smith one of the league's highest-paid linebackers, trading him is the smartest move for a rebuilding team that could have a top-10 draft pick in 2023. Smith, a second-team All-Pro in each of the last two seasons, has led Chicago in tackles each year since entering the NFL.Potential landing spots: Ravens, ChargersChase ClaypoolThe writing might already be on the wall for Claypool. The Steelers gave Diontae Johnson an extension in the offseason and added wideout George Pickens in the draft. Still, the franchise might be hesitant to move a 24-year-old receiver under contract for 2023. However, that might not stop some wide-receiver-needy teams from making the phones in Pittsburgh ring with inquiries. Gifted with a rare combination of size and athleticism, Claypool is the kind of physical specimen that clubs deeply value.Potential landing spots: Giants, TitansBrian BurnsThe Panthers are this year's biggest sellers, and Burns is arguably their most talented young player. Granted, Carolina apparently won't deal the 2019 first-round pick unless it gets a massive haul in return. But Burns is a mouth-watering option for teams looking for a defender who will be one of the NFL's top edge rushers for years to come. He amassed 50-plus pressures and nine sacks in each of the last two campaigns.Potential landing spots: Rams, ChiefsBradley ChubbChubb is the most logical option if the Broncos are to move anyone. The pass-rusher is set to be a free agent at the end of the season and would recoup some draft capital for a franchise that appears destined for mediocrity in 2022. Chubb recorded 12 sacks in his rookie year but has compiled just 14 sacks in the four campaigns since. The 26-year-old would still be a great fit for a team looking to make a playoff run.Potential landing spots: Ravens, TitansKareem Hunt Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyAfter his previous trade request this summer didn't work, the Browns are now reportedly open to moving Hunt before the deadline. Cleveland wants to get compensation back for Hunt before the running back has a chance to walk for nothing as a free agent this offseason. The 27-year-old should draw a lot of attention as one of the league's most dynamic dual-threat backs.Potential landing spots: Rams, BillsJerry JeudyJeudy has reportedly been the subject of trade calls amid the Broncos' disappointing 2022 campaign. The former No. 15 overall pick hasn't played up to expectations through his first three seasons, as he's yet to eclipse even 900 receiving yards in a campaign. However, the 23-year-old is an intriguing bounce-back candidate. Though Jeudy's value isn't what the Broncos imagined when they spent a top pick on him in 2020, it's hard to picture them parting with him for cheap.Potential landing spots: Packers, VikingsD.J. MooreThe Panthers appear to be holding a garage sale as they head for a top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Trading former franchise star Christian McCaffrey might signal that no one is off limits. However, Moore is reportedly considered a foundational piece of the roster and isn't for sale. Whether that's true remains to be seen, but Moore would likely fetch Carolina a large return. Despite some putrid quarterback play, the 25-year-old wideout has exceeded 1,100 receiving yards over the past three seasons.Potential landing spots: Cowboys, RavensElijah MooreMoore's one of the most surprising names on this year's trade deadline big board. The second-year wideout had a solid rookie campaign and entered 2022 as one of the Jets' main weapons, but he recently requested a trade following a zero-target outing in Week 6. Coach Robert Saleh said New York doesn't plan to move Moore, but things could change once it has offers on the table. Moore has caught only 16 passes in 2022, but he amassed 538 yards and five touchdowns in just 11 games last year.Potential landing spots: Packers, ChargersJosh Allen Mike Carlson / Getty Images Sport / GettyAllen deserves special attention as the deadline nears. The 2019 No. 7 pick has reportedly generated interest from multiple teams, and the James Robinson trade to the Jets may be a sign that the Jaguars are selling. Yes, losing Allen, a team captain, would be a big blow to the defense. But it's not like Jacksonville doesn't roster other talented edge rushers; the team drafted Travon Walker first overall this year. Trading Allen, who still hasn't begun negotiating a long-term deal, would likely return a splashy haul of draft picks to the rebuilding Jaguars.Potential landing spots: Rams, BuccaneersDavid MontgomeryThe Bears would likely listen to trade calls regarding every player, and other teams should be reaching out about Montgomery. It's unclear if Chicago plans on giving the fourth-year veteran an extension, but it'd be smart to get draft compensation in return for the pending free agent ahead of the 2023 offseason. The Bears will lose one of their most consistent offensive players if they move Montgomery. But they roster emerging running back Khalil Herbert, who deserves a larger role.Potential landing spots: Rams, BroncosDaron PayneEven if the Commanders don't want to sell at the deadline, they should consider moving Payne for the right price. He'll be a free agent next year, and Washington doesn't have a lot of salary cap space after rewarding Terry McLaurin and Jonathan Allen with long-term deals. Plus, Chase Young's rookie deal is approaching its end. The Commanders could let Payne test free agency and receive a compensatory pick in 2024 if he signs elsewhere. Or they could potentially acquire a 2023 second- or third-round selection with a trade now. Payne would be an immediate starter for any team.Potential landing spots: Jets, RaidersBrandin CooksCooks has been one of the NFL's best vertical threats for most of his career and topped 1,000 yards in all but one season from 2015-21 while playing for four different teams. His contract carries $18 million fully guaranteed in 2023, but Houston may be willing to assume some of that financial obligation in order to trade him.Potential landing spots: Seahawks, BuccaneersKenny Golladay Justin Ford / Getty Images Sport / GettyFew players need a change of scenery as much as Golladay. It's hard to imagine him being dealt by the Giants in the second season of a four-year, $72-million deal with guaranteed money going into 2023. Still, New York should cut its losses if a team makes an offer. The former Pro Bowler only has two catches in 2022, and he clearly isn't part of first-year coach Brian Daboll's plans. Golladay caught 1,190 yards and a league-high 11 touchdowns three years ago.Potential landing spots: Bears, RaidersJessie BatesIt's not often that a team with a winning record ships off one of their best players, but it isn't too far-fetched to imagine the Bengals trading Bates. Friction between the two sides emerged over the offseason after they couldn't agree to an extension for the franchise-tagged safety. Drafting Daxton Hill in the first round might signal the club is grooming Bates' heir, leaving the trade deadline as the last opportunity for Cincinnati to receive anything in return for Bates.Potential landing spots: Cowboys, FalconsIsaiah WynnTeams are reportedly sniffing around about Wynn's availability. A former first-round pick in 2018, Wynn isn't one of the league's premier offensive line stars, but it's not every season that a starting-caliber lineman might be on the move. A free agent at the end of the season, Wynn could boost a team that has major holes on its offensive line.Potential landing spots: Rams, BearsKendrick BourneBourne has found himself without a true role in the 2022 edition of the Patriots' offense. After putting up over 925 yards from scrimmage last year, Bourne's 156 receiving yards rank sixth on the team. New England reportedly wants to hang on to him despite receiving calls from interested suitors. Bill Belichick might be better off seeing what he can fetch for the 27-year-old as he's on the path to be a likely cut candidate in the offseason thanks to a $4.75-million base salary in 2023.Potential landing spots: Raiders, GiantsWilliam Jackson Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettyJackson has reportedly requested a trade, and it's easy to see why. A corner who has built his game on playing man-to-man, Jackson is an awkward fit for a zone-heavy Commanders defense. A potential trade to a team that utilizes a man-coverage philosophy is a move that makes sense for both sides, especially with Washington sitting at 3-4 with its No. 1 quarterback sidelined.Potential landing spots: Lions, ChargersNelson AgholorThe Pats bolstered their receiving corps in the offseason, and now multiple returning receivers from last year haven't had as much playing time. Agholor didn't do much with New England last year but is only two years removed from a 2020 campaign in which he averaged 18.7 yards per catch and scored eight touchdowns. That explains why teams have reportedly contacted the Patriots about trading for him. Agholor is owed around $9 million in 2022, so part of his salary would go with him in a potential trade.Potential landing spots: Bengals, SeahawksCam AkersAfter two-plus years together, the Rams and Akers are headed for a divorce. Sean McVay has already openly discussed the likelihood of the running back finding a new home, meaning it shouldn't take much to make a deal happen. Akers flashed in his rookie year but has struggled to show the same juice since returning from a torn Achilles at the tail end of last season. The 23-year-old has only averaged more than three yards per carry in one game this campaign.Potential landing spots: Broncos, Falcons(Cap source: Spotrac)Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs' Reid: Toney is 'healthy,' should learn offense 'relatively fast'
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed Monday that wide receiver Kadarius Toney is healthy, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.Reid added that the team's looking forward to getting Toney in the mix, but it will be a gradual process, according to team reporter Matt McMullen."I'm not expecting him to learn the whole offense," Reid added, according to Taylor. "I'm sure he'll pick it up relatively fast."The Chiefs have done a great job spreading the ball around this season, as four players have at least 25 targets."We've got one football, and we've got a few guys that we'd like to get the ball to," Reid said, according to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com.
MNF best bets: Can the Browns haunt the Bengals on Halloween night?
Each Monday we'll finish off the week that was in the NFL with a look at value spots in the remaining game - under one condition: you promise not to chase. Whether Sunday provided a boost to the accounts or left a little to be desired, Monday Night Football provides an opportunity to show responsibility in your betting, as there will always be another wild Sunday to get lost in.Like the beginning of a good scary movie, the Bengals were riding high after a blowout win at home over the Falcons, ready for the quick, innocent trip up to Cleveland for a prime-time interstate showdown. Then a nightmare in the form of Ja'Marr Chase's hip came to life. The Browns are also haunted by bad news, some brought on by themselves. With their own plethora of injuries, who isn't playing will inform our bets for Monday night.Bengals @ Browns (+3.5, 45)With Chase missing the first game of his career, will Joe Burrow and the Bengals' offense survive the night? Burrow has always been able to find his former LSU teammate when the going gets tough, but he'll have to do without him against Cleveland's pass-rushers. Jadeveon Clowney and Myles Garrett should terrorize an offensive line that's giving up the seventh-highest sack percentage.Defensively, neither team defends the rush well, but it's Cleveland's trick-or-treat duo of Nick Chubb (2.8 yards after contact) and Kareem Hunt (1.9 YAC) that's better adept at exploiting holes. Thirty of the pair's 192 combined carries (15.6%) have gone for 10-plus yards. That threat has struck enough fear in defenses to create occasional big plays for quarterback Jacoby Brissett. By comparison, just seven of Joe Mixon's 121 carries have been that explosive.Using previous point spreads, and applying each team's market rating to this game, either the Bengals got a sizeable upgrade for capitalizing on the Falcons' secondary injuries or the Browns got downgraded despite covering in Baltimore last week. Neither reason makes particular sense, especially given Chase's ailment. So, there's value on the home underdog, particularly when getting the key number of +3.By the time you're reading this, the rain should've already started on the shores of Lake Erie, and it's forecasted to continue into kickoff. Spooky conditions and an undaunted "Dawg Pound" Halloween crowd might lead to a strip sack or an interception that we wouldn't normally see from the usually confident Burrow. Mix in the Browns' running game, and this one has a suspenseful ending.Pick: Browns +3.5Tee Higgins over 5.5 receptionsThe Browns' pass defense has been a "Rocky Horror Picture Show" but with less camp. Cleveland's giving up 7.1 yards per pass attempt this season and getting victimized by the likes of Joe Flacco and Bailey Zappe. Denzel Ward is out, while Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Greedy Williams, and Greg Newsome are questionable, so there's no reason the Bengals shouldn't keep throwing against a skeleton crew, even without Chase.Tee Higgins is a pretty good substitute as a top target, but his reception total hasn't increased from 5.5. Chase's 10 targets per game are seemingly up for grabs against a suspect pass defense without a shutdown corner, so look for Burrow to take numerous stabs toward Higgins.Harrison Bryant anytime touchdown (+320)David Njoku had been coming into his own, but he'll now be out for a few weeks with his foot in a walking boot. His absence leaves Harrison Bryant as the lone pass-catching tight end plying his craft. Even though this is the shortest price we've seen all year for a Bryant touchdown, this is more about him taking Njoku's role against an injury-riddled Bengals secondary that'll have its eyes focused on the Browns' backfield.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 8 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.Zach Wilson ain't it Elsa / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Jets sitting at 5-3 halfway through the season really should be reason for celebration. In some respects, it is. After a tough first year on the job, Robert Saleh finally has this team headed back in the right direction. But it's difficult to feel too good about the future of the organization when its young quarterback, selected No. 2 overall in 2021, is this bad in his second season. Wilson has been a disaster.Sunday's loss to the Patriots, despite what ended up being some respectable counting stats, is the latest in a long line of maddening games from the Jets signal-caller. One mind-boggling decision after another saw Wilson serve up three of the worst interceptions you will see all year, including whatever this was.If you want to write it off as one game against a good defense, go for it. This is nothing new, though. Wilson has impressive arm talent and is a good athlete for the quarterback position. That's why he was the No. 2 overall pick. But at this early stage of his career, his game completely falls apart under duress. PFF's breakdown of his performance when kept clean and when under pressure heading into this week was almost unbelievable.

Jerry Jones: Zeke's role won't change despite Pollard's breakout game
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday that running back Ezekiel Elliott's role in the offense won't change when he returns from the knee injury that sidelined him against the Chicago Bears."There's no argument. Zeke's ability to punish, Zeke's ability to deliver it … what he does for us in pass protection, and frankly Zeke's ability to make big plays are there," Jones said after his team's 49-29 victory, per Jon Machota of The Athletic."We're going to go as Zeke goes."Without Elliott, Tony Pollard started against Chicago and ran wild. He accumulated 131 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries in the win. He also added one catch for 16 yards.Pollard now has 506 rushing yards in eight games and has done so on an impressive 6.24 yards per carry. He also has five rushing touchdowns. Elliott, meanwhile, has 443 yards and four touchdowns in seven starts, averaging 4.1 yards per carry.Elliott still has four years remaining on the six-year, $90-million extension that he signed in 2019. If the Cowboys trade or cut Elliott next year, they'll sustain a dead cap hit of $11.86 million and free up $10.9 million in 2023 cap space, according to Spotrac.Pollard, 25, is scheduled to become a free agent in 2023.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Saints want CMC-like package to trade Kamara, rebuffed Bills interest
The New Orleans Saints would require a return similar to what Christian McCaffrey fetched before they trade star running back Alvin Kamara, sources told the NFL Network staff. The Carolina Panthers received second-, third-, and fourth-round picks in 2023 and a 2024 fifth-rounder from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for McCaffrey earlier this month. After eyeing a move for McCaffrey, the Buffalo Bills inquired about trading for Kamara, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer. However, the Saints dismissed Buffalo's interest.Kamara is under contract through the 2025 campaign and is due base salaries of $9.4 million, $10.2 million, and $22.4 million over the next three years, respectively, according to Spotrac. The running back is also owed $575,000 for the remainder of the season. The 27-year-old has been one of the NFL's most productive backs since entering the league in 2017. He's made five straight trips to the Pro Bowl while recording 8,043 yards from scrimmage across his career. He's pitched in 351 rushing yards this season while also bringing in 191 receiving yards. The Saints have gotten off to a rough start in their first season under Dennis Allen. The club is tied for last in the NFC South with a 2-5 record after losing five of the last six games. New Orleans has also dealt with injuries to key players, such as Michael Thomas.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Wilson ends Broncos' 4-game slide, leads late win over Jaguars
Russell Wilson led a seven-play, 80-yard fourth-quarter drive that culminated with a Latavius Murray touchdown to give the Denver Broncos a 21-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.Wilson's late game-winning drive snaps a four-game losing streak and brings Denver its first victory since Week 3. The Broncos will head into their bye week with a 3-5 record.Broncos cornerback K'Waun Williams sealed the game with an interception on Trevor Lawrence with just over a minute remaining.Wilson, who missed last week's loss to the New York Jets, threw for 252 yards with one touchdown and one interception.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Reich's job considered safe despite Colts' sluggish start
Head coach Frank Reich isn't in the hot seat despite the Indianapolis Colts' slow start in 2022, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Owner Jim Irsay told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Sunday that he's in a "great spot" with Reich and general manager Chris Ballard. The Colts have a 3-3-1 mark heading into Week 8, and their offense ranks 30th in points per game. The offensive struggles led Indianapolis to bench Matt Ryan and give the starting quarterback job to second-year pro Sam Ehlinger. Ryan has struggled this season, throwing nine touchdowns and nine interceptions en route to an 84.7 passer rating, which currently stands as the second lowest of his career.Reich took over the Colts in 2018 and made the postseason in his first year at the helm, but he's only made it back to the playoffs once since then. Indianapolis is looking for its first postseason appearance since 2020 after a late-campaign collapse left them on the outside looking in last year.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Browns open to trading Hunt
The Cleveland Browns are ready to honor Kareem Hunt's trade request, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Hunt reportedly requested a trade back in training camp as he briefly "held in" from practices while pursuing a new contract extension. However, Hunt - who is set to be a free agent this offseason - did not receive a new deal. The Browns' are unwilling to lose him for nothing in free agency, Schefter adds. The franchise is reportedly looking for a fourth-round draft pick in return for the running back. The 27-year-old has been part of a dynamic backfield duo with Nick Chubb over the past four seasons. Hunt enjoyed his best campaign with Cleveland in 2020 after racking up 841 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns.Hunt has rushed for 263 yards this season, but his workload has decreased recently. The back has logged just nine carries over his last two games.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Titans' Willis set for 1st start after Tannehill ruled out vs. Texans
Rookie Malik Willis is in line to make his first career start Sunday against the Houston Texans after the Tennessee Titans downgraded Ryan Tannehill to out.Tannehill, who won't travel to Houston, missed Saturday's walk-through due to an illness, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. He was listed as questionable for the matchup due to an illness and ankle injury.Willis received all the starter reps throughout the week, Pelissero adds. The rookie has made two appearances this season, with the majority of snaps coming in relief of Tannehill in a Week 2 blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills. He rushed four times for 16 yards while also completing one of his four pass attempts.Tannehill has guided the Titans to a 4-2 record entering Week 8. He's completed just over 65.1% of his passes for six touchdowns to three interceptions.Tennessee drafted Willis in the third round in April.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sources: Packers, Rams among teams interested in Brandin Cooks
The Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, and Green Bay Packers have reached out to the Houston Texans about wide receiver Brandin Cooks, sources told Jordan Schultz, theScore's NFL insider.Cooks only wants to move to a contending team if he is dealt.
NFL Week 8 player props: Tight ends up and star receivers down
Matt Ryan got blamed for the Colts' lack of offensive success versus the Titans, which only makes sense if it was his idea to call just 10 run plays for Jonathan Taylor when the back was running for 6 yards per carry in a close game. Thus, Taylor went under his rushing yards total, and subsequently, a 4-6 week pulled our year-long record down to 36-34 while we hope for more rational play-calling in Week 8.Greg Dulcich over 32.5 receiving yardsHe's not a household name, but a relatively new, big-bodied weapon for Russell Wilson is the best bet to get us doing high knees in the living room Sunday morning. Dulcich caught a 39-yard touchdown pass in his first game of the season two weeks ago, and with Wilson out last week, Brett Rypien found the rookie for six catches on nine targets. That only amounted to 51 yards, but that would be enough for the over here, and Wilson presumably might be able to put Dulcich in position further down the field.Cole Kmet over 2.5 receptions (+110)Staying in the tight end department, Justin Fields should find himself trailing by margin in the second half because of the Cowboys' focus on slowing down his legs. With Dallas' eyes on the backfield, Kmet should be open over the middle and a primary target for checkdowns late. In fact, he can even be found at 15-1 for six catches or more.D'Andre Swift over 77.5 rushing + receiving yardsAfter a month nursing injuries, Swift came off the injury report this week, and not a moment too soon. The Lions scored just six points in their last two games, and their RB2 fumbled at the goal line last week. Expect the Lions to rely on Swift to right their ship offensively, and since he can break a big play by either rushing or receiving, we'll play the combination line.Zach Wilson under 179.5 passing yardsThe Jets have won their last four games, so Wilson's performance hasn't been heavily scrutinized, but he's gone under this number in the last two games. The Patriots also won't have to watch the backfield as closely with Breece Hall out. Considering the Jets' weakened run game, Alijah Vera-Tucker becoming the latest offensive lineman to be ruled out for the year, more movement on the receiver depth chart, and Bill Belichick scheming on the other sideline, we'll fade Wilson again.Justin Jefferson under 90.5 receiving yardsFading one of our favorite players doesn't sound all that fun, but Byron Murphy and the Cardinals' pass defense are crazy good against true No. 1 receivers. Check out their bona fides:GAMEPLAYER STATSWeek 2Davante Adams2 rec / 12 ydsWeek 3Cooper Kupp4 rec / 44 ydsWeek 5A.J. Brown3 rec / 32 ydsWeek 6DK Metcalf2 rec / 34 ydsThe Cards know Kevin O'Connell's offense well after having to face the Rams twice a season and Arizona should often be able to predict where Jefferson is headed.Davante Adams under 83.5 receiving yardsAdams has gone over his total for three straight games, but a few things are working against him here, including a bout with the flu early this week. Darren Waller may also be back Sunday, which would mean that Derek Carr will be picking between Adams, Waller, Hunter Renfrow, and the emergent Mack Hollins when he's not leaning on Josh Jacobs against a Saints run defense that's uncharacteristically struggled this year.Najee Harris under 48.5 rushing yardsHarris averaged more than 4 yards per carry just once this season - when he had 4.1 per tote against the Jets - and patience is wearing thin in Pittsburgh. Will the Steelers be able to hand it off at least 13 times against the Eagles? That's the minimum number of carries Harris will need to clear this total.D.J. Moore over 59.5 receiving yardsThe Falcons were familiar with Ja'Marr Chase's work going into Week 7 and they still gave up a billion yards to him and the rest of the Bengals' receivers. The banged-up Atlanta secondary might not surrender as many yards this week, but the front seven doesn't usually get much pressure either. D.J. Moore can go over this modest total in PJ Walker's third start in a row.Kenneth Walker III over 81.5 rushing yardsLast week, we backed Walker to go over his rushing total against the Chargers because their defense gives up 5.7 yards per rush (and because Walker might be really awesome). One team is tied with Los Angeles for league-worst in that category: the New York Giants. You know what to do.Sam Ehlinger over 25.5 rushing yardsEhlinger runs the football. It's what he did at Texas, and it's part of what the second-year quarterback brings to the Colts' offense that Ryan doesn't. As a bonus, opponents will still be more concerned about Taylor, so whether it's by design or it's because he panics in the pocket, Ehlinger should be on the move often.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Bengals' Chase won't be placed on IR despite hip injury
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase won't be placed on injured reserve despite his hip injury, a source told Jordan Schultz, theScore's NFL insider.Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed Saturday that Chase will not land on injured reserve, according to Kelsey Conway of the Enquirer.Chase, who's reportedly expected to miss four-to-six weeks, sustained a hairline hip fracture and torn labrum, Schultz reports. Landing on IR would sideline him for at least four weeks.Chase sustained the injury against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6. He aggravated the ailment while playing last Sunday versus the Atlanta Falcons. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year has been one of football's most explosive playmakers since entering the NFL as the No. 5 overall pick. Chase racked up at least 130 yards and two touchdowns in each of his last two appearances and has caught 128 passes for 2,060 yards and 19 touchdowns in 24 career games. With the 22-year-old sidelined, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd will headline Cincy's wide receiver depth chart. The Bengals face the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers over the next two weeks before a bye in Week 10.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. This is the first game he'll miss this campaign.Samuel's 387 receiving yards ranks second on the team this season, only trailing Brandon Aiyuk (402 yards). Samuel also added 138 yards on the ground.San Francisco will also be without the services of defensive lineman Arik Armstead, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk against the Rams. The 3-4 49ers head into their pivotal matchup against the 3-3 Rams on the heels of consecutive losses to the Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc.
