Eagles' Minshew to start vs. Cowboys with Hurts injured
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Gardner Minshew will start Saturday's contest against the Dallas Cowboys with Jalen Hurts likely out due to a sprained shoulder, head coach Nick Sirianni announced Thursday."Gardner will be our guy," Sirianni said. "Gardner will be ready, and Gardner worked his butt off for this opportunity."Sirianni initially said Tuesday that Hurts had a chance to start."(Hurts) is disappointed because he wants to play," Sirianni said Thursday, according to Josh Tolentino of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But we have to do what's best as an organization to put us in a safe spot because he will play through anything. Those are hard conversations we have to game sometimes."Hurts suffered a shoulder injury in the third quarter of last week's win against the Chicago Bears when defensive end Trevis Gipson landed on him while making a tackle. Hurts was slow to get up but remained in the contest. The 24-year-old is producing a potential MVP campaign and has led Philadelphia to a 13-1 record, totaling 4,219 yards and 35 touchdowns.Minshew started just two games in 2021.He led the Eagles to victory over the New York Jets in Week 13 last season, completing 20 passes on 25 attempts for 242 yards and two touchdowns.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL award rankings: Race heating up for MVP, rookie honors, more
With 15 weeks of the 2022 NFL season in the books, the race for the league's top awards is heating up.Here's a current look at the five best candidates for each major honor:Coach of the Year5. Mike McCarthy, Cowboys Courtney Culbreath / Getty Images Sport / GettyMcCarthy's COY resume took a big hit with the loss to the Jaguars, but he still deserves a lot of credit for helping make Dallas one of the NFL's most competitive and balanced teams despite battling major injuries throughout the season. The 10-4 Cowboys' 125 point differential ranks fourth in the league.4. Dan Campbell, LionsNo award has seen more movement among its candidates than Coach of the Year, and the Lions' six wins in their last seven games earn Campbell a spot here. Campbell, one of football's most aggressive coaches on fourth down, still makes some controversial in-game decisions, but he and his coaching staff have found a winning formula that's given Detroit a legit chance of making the playoffs despite starting the campaign 1-6.3. Kyle Shanahan, 49ersFew teams, if any, look as good as the 49ers right now. San Francisco has already clinched the NFC West and won its last seven games, including three with third-string quarterback Brock Purdy. The Niners might have the NFL's deepest and most balanced roster, but they wouldn't be this good if it wasn't for Shanahan and his staff making the necessary adjustments every time adversity is thrown their way.2. Brian Daboll, GiantsSome may say Daboll shouldn't be here after the Giants went winless from Weeks 11-14. And that's fair, but let's not forget that New York is 8-5-1 after winning a pivotal game versus Washington - good for the No. 6 seed in the NFC. That marks a huge turnaround for a team that hired Daboll after winning just four games last year and with a clear lack of individual talent on both sides of the ball. Daboll has maximized the team's chances of winning better than any other coach.1. Nick Sirianni, Eagles Megan Briggs / Getty Images Sport / GettyWhile the rest of the top five has changed constantly amidst one of the most unpredictable seasons in recent memory, the No. 1 spot is still Sirianni's to lose. He's guided the Eagles to a 13-1 record and could lock up the NFC's No. 1 seed in Week 16. Coaches sometimes struggle to manage stacked rosters surrounded by high expectations, but the Sirianni-led Eagles have lived up to their preseason hype en route to becoming football's strongest team.Defensive Rookie of the Year5. Jack Jones, PatriotsJones makes the cut despite missing Week 15 due to injury. A key member of New England's secondary, the fourth-rounder has thrived in the Patriots' cornerback-friendly system, racking up 30 tackles, six pass breakups, a forced fumble, and two interceptions, including a pick-6 off Aaron Rodgers.4. Kayvon Thibodeaux, GiantsThibodeaux enjoyed his best NFL performance on Sunday during the Giants' biggest game of the season. With 19 pressures over the last four games, no other rookie edge rusher has played better over the last month than the No. 5 overall pick. The Oregon product would have a legit shot at winning DROY if he was fully healthy to start the season.3. Aidan Hutchinson, LionsWe knew it could take Hutchinson a bit to polish his pass-rush skills and for Detroit to figure out where and how the Michigan product would fit in its system. This year for the Lions was mainly about making sure they drafted the right guy - and Hutchinson has proved them right. He's on pace to finish the campaign with 29 pressures, eight sacks, and eight tackles for loss. Plus, he's intercepted two passes. Those numbers would possibly be enough to win DROY in most seasons, but the 2022 class is just too deep.2. Tariq Woolen, Seahawks Christopher Mast / Getty Images Sport / GettyRanking Hutchinson over Woolen wouldn't be wrong, but the Seahawks corner has just been more impressive and consistent. Despite entering the NFL as a fifth-rounder, Woolen leads the league with six interceptions. He's also amassed 13 pass breakups and a touchdown while allowing a 53.5 passer rating when targeted. His physicality has been a major factor in helping Seattle allow 217.7 passing yards per game after giving up 265.5 in 2021.1. Ahmad Gardner, JetsAs good as Woolen has been, Gardner is on another level. He might be the best corner in football. Yes, Woolen has more interceptions and a slightly better rating in coverage. But no other rookie has made an impact as big as Gardner, who's already a cornerstone of one of the league's most improved defenses. The No. 4 pick, who leads the NFL with 16 pass breakups, played every defensive snap in his last two weeks, yet he was targeted just twice in those games combined. It's been a perfect marriage of scheme and skill for New York and Gardner.Offensive Rookie of the Year5. Dameon Pierce, TexansPierce put on a show to start the season but wasn't able to replicate his performances all year long. The 22-year-old, who's already been ruled out for the final three games with an injury, didn't score a touchdown in his last six appearances and averaged three yards per carry in his past four games. With 1,104 scrimmage yards and five total touchdowns, the fourth-round running back had a good 2022 season. It just wasn't good enough to win OROY.4. Chris Olave, Saints Ezra Shaw / Getty Images Sport / GettyDon't let New Orleans' struggles fool you; Olave's been as good as advertised for the Saints, which drafted the Ohio State stud 11th overall. Olave's been consistent and become a key weapon for New Orleans, ranking second among rookies in catches (63) and receiving yards (940) while leading the class in yards per game (72.3).3. Christian Watson, PackersThe lack of touches (34) hurts Watson's case, but the second-round receiver is still in the race for OROY thanks to his nine touchdowns, including eight in his last five games. He's one of the main reasons the Packers have performed better lately. If Green Bay increases Watson's touches, and the pass-catcher somehow continues to score at this rate, it'd be difficult to argue against him.2. Kenneth Walker, SeahawksOnce considered the favorite for this award, Walker's been quiet lately, averaging just 31.5 rushing yards and 3.2 yards per carry in his last four appearances. The Michigan State product is still this year's best rookie running back - and his nine touchdowns are tied with Watson for most among first-year players - but he'll need a big turnaround in the season's final weeks to claim OROY.1. Garrett Wilson, Jets Adam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyAfter a somewhat slow start to the campaign, Wilson's been an absolute beast lately. The Ohio State product leads all first-year players with 67 receptions and 966 yards. More importantly, he's performed at his best when it matters the most, pilling up 348 yards (15.8 per catch) and one touchdown in the fourth quarter. His four total touchdowns this year aren't very impressive, but they have more to do with New York's QB struggles than Wilson's performance.Defensive Player of the Year5. Maxx Crosby, RaidersFor the second straight year, Crosby's been one of football's premier edge rushers. He ranks second with 24 pressures since Week 12 and now has 62 total pressures, the fifth-best mark in the NFL. Those numbers alone should make him a DPOY candidate, but Crosby has also been stellar against the run, ranking third in run stop win rate and first in tackles for loss (19).4. Chris Jones, ChiefsIn a year where several interior defensive linemen have emerged as star cornerstones around the NFL, Jones has been the best of the bunch. The 28-year-old, who was a second-team All-Pro in the last two seasons, is arguably having the best season of his career in 2022. PFF's fourth-best defender, Jones leads all defensive tackles in most categories, including sacks (11) and pass rush win rate.3. Myles Garrett, Browns Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyNine games with at least one sack, 13.5 total sacks, 65 pressures, and two forced fumbles. That's how good Garrett - PFF's top-ranked defender - has been despite missing one game. The 6-8 Browns haven't really given Garrett the supporting cast he deserves and translated his excellent campaign into wins, but that shouldn't take anything away from the fact that Garrett might be the sport's most unstoppable defender.2. Nick Bosa, 49ersWe all thought Micah Parsons would run away with Defensive Player of the Year honors, but Bosa had other plans. He's the best player on football's top-ranked defense. The 25-year-old, who missed one game early this campaign, leads the NFL in sacks (15.5) and QB hits (38). He's been the league's most consistent edge rusher, having recorded a sack in all but two appearances.1. Micah Parsons, CowboysThis is a two-man race. While the gap between Parsons and Bosa isn't nearly as big as it was a month ago, the Cowboys star is still football's top defender. Bosa might be the more consistent pass-rusher right now, but Parsons has made more game-changing plays and had a bigger impact on his team's wins. In addition to 13 sacks and the second-highest pass rush win rate among edge rushers, Parsons has also racked up six multi-sack games, three forced fumbles, and one defensive touchdown in 2022.MVP5. Josh Allen, Bills Bryan Bennett / Getty Images Sport / GettyDoes Allen still have a chance? After struggling in November and early December, the Bills star put on a show in Week 15, reminding us why he was the MVP front-runner in the campaign's first weeks. It's hard to imagine Allen winning the award at this point, given how little margin for error MVP candidates have, but his 2022 resume is impressive. He leads the league in big-time throws and ranks in the top five for passing yards and touchdowns. Oh, and the 11-3 Bills currently have the AFC's No. 1 seed.4. Justin Jefferson, VikingsThis spot belonged to Tyreek Hill until the Dolphins suffered their third straight loss in Week 15. Jefferson is the best player on an 11-3 Vikings team that just clinched the NFC North for the first time since 2017 after staging the biggest comeback in NFL history. With the team's defensive issues, Jefferson's consistency and game-changing plays have been key for Minnesota to go 10-0 in one-score games. The star receiver leads the league with 111 catches and 1,623 yards, and he'll become the first player ever with 2,000 receiving yards in a season if he averages 126 over the next three games.3. Joe Burrow, BengalsThere isn't a lot separating Burrow, Allen, and Jefferson, but the Bengals star gets the edge here due to his fourth-quarter performances. Not only does Burrow rank fourth in passing yards and second in touchdowns, but he's been football's best passer in the fourth quarter, posting a 70.25% completion rate with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions in the final frame. He also leads all starting QBs in Expected Points Added (EPA) per dropback in the fourth quarter and has helped the 10-4 Bengals win six straight.2. Patrick Mahomes, ChiefsThe MVP award is likely down to Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, and there are a lot of reasons to still consider Mahomes the favorite. He's the best player in the league, no other quarterback can do what he does, and Hurts is injured. Plus, Mahomes tops all QBs in passing yards (4,496), touchdowns (35), and EPA per play. The Mahomes-led Chiefs have already clinched the AFC West and remain in the mix for the AFC's No. 1 seed at 11-3.1. Jalen Hurts, Eagles Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyIf the season ended today, Hurts should win the MVP. He's put on a show while quarterbacking a one-loss Eagles team that owns the NFL's best record. Granted, he threw two interceptions in an ugly win over Chicago, but Mahomes also had three picks two weeks ago. Hurts, who's thrown for 22 TDs to just five INTs, has also racked up 747 yards and 13 scores on the ground, the second-most in the league. That said, the 24-year-old is battling a shoulder sprain that could sideline him for a pair of games. The injury reportedly isn't major, but with the Eagles on the brink of clinching the NFC's No. 1 seed, will they even risk playing Hurts for a full game in the regular season's final three weeks? If the star passer misses those contests, MVP will likely be Mahomes' to lose.(Advanced stats source: Next Gen Stats, Football Reference, ESPN Analytics, RBSDM.com)Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Pro Bowl snubs: 6 players the NFL failed to reward
The NFL unveiled rosters for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games on Wednesday, and some deserving names were inexplicably missing from the AFC and NFC teams. Here are the six greatest snubs:Tua Tagovailoa, QB, DolphinsIt's hard to argue against Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, or Joe Burrow in the AFC, but it should've been even harder to go against Tagovailoa. The former fifth overall pick has flourished in coach Mike McDaniel's creative scheme, putting up huge numbers while positioning Miami to snap its six-year playoff drought.Tagovailoa, who opened his career with two lackluster campaigns, leads the NFL with a 107.8 passer rating. He's completing a healthy 64.8% of his passes, and he has the best ratio in the NFL with 24 touchdowns to five interceptions. The Dolphins have looked nearly unstoppable when Tagovailoa has been on the field. Conversely, they're 0-3 in games Tagovailoa couldn't finish due to injury, further solidifying his impact.Matt Milano, LB, Bills Megan Briggs / Getty Images Sport / GettyMilano continues to be one of the most disrespected linebackers in the NFL. The 28-year-old, who's arguably the most valuable player on the Bills' defense this year, is having one of the best seasons of his career in 2022, amassing 85 tackles (12 for loss), eight pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions, including a pick-6.Roquan Smith of the Baltimore Ravens and C.J. Mosley of the New York Jets - the two inside linebackers who made the cut in the AFC over Milano - are having solid campaigns with 130 tackles apiece. But their games have more limitations than Milano's, as they aren't nearly as good in pass coverage. We often see players earning All-Pro honors despite being left out of the Pro Bowl, and that might happen with Milano this season.Christian McCaffrey, RB, 49ersMcCaffrey might be this year's biggest snub. The 26-year-old, who joined San Francisco in a trade from the Carolina Panthers in October, has put on a show. His 2022 campaign is arguably better than any of the three running backs who've been selected to represent the NFC at the Pro Bowl Games.All-Purpose YdsTotal TDsMcCaffrey157811Saquon Barkley14649Tony Pollard127912Miles Sanders118211McCaffrey's stats as a runner alone aren't off the charts, as he's rushed for 927 yards (4.6 per carry) and six touchdowns. However, the former All-Pro, who was the fan vote leader for the Pro Bowl at his position, has also caught 74 passes for 623 yards and four scores and even threw a 34-yard TD early this season.Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, Lions NurPhoto / NurPhoto / GettyJustin Jefferson and A.J. Brown are no-brainers among NFC wide receivers, but are we sure St. Brown didn't deserve to make the cut over Terry McLaurin or even CeeDee Lamb?St. Brown, who burst onto the scene as a fourth-round pick last year, has been Detroit's most reliable weapon in the passing game this campaign. He's also racked up more scrimmage yards, first downs, and total touchdowns than McLaurin despite playing one fewer game.Rec.Total YdsTDs1st DLamb811134655St. Brown891069657McLaurin681032348Javon Hargrave, DT, EaglesThe Eagles can't cry foul after receiving a league-high eight selections, but something feels wrong about Hargrave missing out. The 29-year-old has 10 sacks from the interior of the defensive line, putting him among the league leaders at his position, and has another nine tackles for loss. He's spent as much time in opposing backfields as any defensive lineman in the NFL. Hargrave has been the Eagles' best defensive lineman, if not their best defensive player.Andrew Thomas, OT, Giants Cooper Neill / Getty Images Sport / GettyIt's been a special season for Thomas, who's finally living up to being the fourth overall pick in 2020. He's started all 14 games at left tackle for New York, allowing just three sacks in 537 pass-block snaps. The 23-year-old is the fourth-best offensive tackle in the NFL, according to PFF, yet the league didn't have room for him on the NFC roster.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Titans' Tannehill likely done for season with ankle injury
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is likely to miss the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury, a source told The Athletic's Joe Rexrode. The Titans are unsure if his ankle will require surgery, Rexrode reports.Tannehill sustained the injury in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He was carted to the locker room but later returned, finishing the game with 15 completions on 22 attempts for 165 yards and no touchdowns against one interception. The 34-year-old previously missed two games this season due to an ankle ailment. He's completed 65.2% of his passes for 2,536 yards and 13 touchdowns to six interceptions through 12 contests in 2022.With Tannehill sidelined, third-round rookie Malik Willis is in line to start. Willis made two starts while replacing Tannehill earlier this year, completing just 11 of 26 pass attempts for 135 yards and no touchdown against one interception.Tennessee also signed quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the active roster from the Detroit Lions' practice squad Wednesday. The 7-7 Titans sit first in the AFC South but have lost four straight and only have a one-game lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans host the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys over the next two weeks before visiting the Jaguars to finish the regular season.Tannehill carries a $36.6-million cap hit in 2023. The Titans, who recently fired general manager Jon Robinson, would take $18.8 million in dead money if they cut the veteran passer with a pre-June 1 designation. That number would drop to $9.6 million after June 1.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Prescott: Eagles game 'about making a statement to ourselves'
Dak Prescott thinks Saturday's highly anticipated matchup against the 13-1 Philadelphia Eagles will be a great test for the Dallas Cowboys as they try to regain their confidence after a tough loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars."If anything, it's about making a statement to ourselves," Prescott said Wednesday, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. "It's about, as you look at the season, we've had some games where we played really well and some games where we bit ourselves in the foot and had some games where we didn't and we lost."So, yeah, this is about putting our best foot forward, putting our best effort out there, and proving it to ourselves in all three phases that we're a hell of a team and we can go get it done against one of the best teams in the league whether they're in our division or not."The Cowboys blew a 27-10 third-quarter lead to the Jaguars in Week 16, ultimately losing 40-34 in overtime after Prescott threw a pick-6. Philadelphia, which owns the NFL's best record this season, now has a three-game lead over Dallas in the NFC East. The Eagles beat the Cowboys 26-17 in Week 6, but Dallas played with backup Cooper Rush under center instead of Prescott, who was sidelined due to a thumb injury."I think everybody in this locker room is looking forward to this rematch in that sense," Prescott added. "When you play a team that's a division rival, understanding the long history that comes with these two teams, understanding that they're playing their asses off. They're having a hell of a season."For them to be in our division and that they control the destiny in winning the division right now, yeah, you just want to get in and get another shot and make sure you put your best foot forward in doing so."Prescott, who's tossed seven interceptions over the last four games, is 7-3 in his career against the Eagles.Dallas hosts Philadelphia before finishing its regular season with two road games versus the Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. TNF player props: Flying under the radar with Jaguars, Jets
Last season, we rocked and rolled our way to the Super Bowl with music-themed Thursday Night Football player props, joyfully celebrating the start of a new NFL week. This year, we'll use an episode from "Must See TV" cornerstone "Seinfeld" each week to remind us that betting is supposed to be fun, even when an absurd series of events leads to a losing bet."You cannot abandon people in an airport pickup. It's a binding social contract; we must go forward, not back." - George CostanzaSeason 4, Episode 11 is set almost entirely on either a plane or in an airport, with Jerry and Elaine returning from St. Louis. Like that city having an NFL team, this episode is of a bygone era, with many obvious tells of the pre-TSA and pre-smartphone era it was set in.George bet Jerry $50 that he could jump and touch the awning out front of Jerry's building. To wipe out the debt, he offered to pick Jerry up at the airport. However, without cell phones and the internet, it became a bigger challenge than anyone expected. In a throwback to Thursday night matchups of the past, the Jets - with their own obvious flaws despite putting together a surprisingly good campaign - host the resurgent Jaguars in a more interesting battle than we may have thought.'The Airport'Zach Wilson is back at quarterback, but, like George in his effort to perform the perfect airport pickup, the Jets' second-year signal-caller keeps having issues connecting with his primary targets. Looking at the prop menu, we'll eye Jacksonville's offense to save us from losing a few bucks, with a more realistic bet than Costanza made with Jerry.Since their trip to London, the Jaguars' offense has clicked. Trevor Lawrence has a QB rating of over 100 in five of six games.GAMESSTATS1-862.5% comp / 1840 yds / 10 TD / 6 INT9-1470.4% comp / 1680 yds / 14 TD / 1 INTBasically, since Week 9, Lawrence has been the first-class ticket Jerry opted for - the football version of enjoying a warm towel, slippers, wine, and a hot fudge sundae. He survived his own "coach" - in the form of Urban Meyer - after dealing with the metaphorical middle seat of rookie season development. Like Elaine, Lawrence didn't know any better. You had a better chance of hopping on and off an airplane in the 90s than you do of going up and down the field on the Jets' defense without some creativity.JaMycal Hasty is the Jaguars' backup tailback, but he's made enough of an impression on Doug Pederson that James Robinson became expendable. With a usual workload of 13-to-18 snaps, the Jags draw up specific plays for Hasty, who runs like he's trying to catch a flight. He's had a carry of 10-plus yards in three straight games, and if anything happens to Travis Etienne, Hasty's the first in line for more volume.Pick: JaMycal Hasty over 7.5 rushing yardsA TD that's definitely going to happenGeorge grabs the last "Time Magazine" just before a felon who's being transported. Getting there first didn't end up paying off for George, who got tackled by the criminal into an airplane washroom. It's a less risky proposition, but we'll anxiously grab the Jaguars' best receiver to score at his longest price of the season.Christian Kirk is nearing 1000 yards, but he hasn't scored in his last four games after tallying seven touchdowns before Thanksgiving. There's no indication that his usage has changed, with 38 catches on 55 targets in his last six games. Sauce Gardner might be chasing him harder than Kramer going after his former roommate for $240 in rent owed, but Kirk is capable of winning some of those battles, saying, "Listen to the bell Gardner, it tolls for thee," as he hauls in a score.Pick: Christian Kirk anytime touchdown (+220)A TD that probably won't happen ... but maybe it does"I never met a man who knew so much about nothing." - Tia, Jerry's seatmate in first class. This season has been a series of close calls on our long-shot touchdowns, as we saw a ball graze the hands of last week's pick in the end zone. So it definitely feels like we know a lot about nothing in this category.Braxton Berrios had his most targets of the season last week, and 12 of his 31 targets on the season have come this month. Berrios dropped a potential game-winning pass in Minnesota three weeks ago, so the veteran is still being trusted on key plays, even though he doesn't have a touchdown catch this season. Berrios does have four rushing touchdowns since this time last season, so there's at least another way he could find the end zone.Pick: Braxton Berrios anytime touchdown (+550)How to bet: The first two bets should be single-unit wagers to win a unit on minus prices and more than a unit on a plus-money bet. The last wager should be smaller, trying to win back your standard unit size.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there’s a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Broncos' Wilson to play vs. Rams after 1-game absence
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson will play Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Nathaniel Hackett said Wednesday, according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic. The Broncos elected to rule Wilson out of last Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals even though he cleared the concussion protocol. He suffered the injury in the Week 14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.Brett Rypien started in Wilson's place against the Cardinals and led the Broncos to a 24-15 victory. He totaled 197 passing yards with one touchdown and interception.Wilson has endured a turbulent first season in Denver. The nine-time Pro Bowler won just three of his 12 starts and threw for 11 touchdowns to six interceptions. His 85.0 passer rating is the lowest of his 11-year career. The Broncos and Rams are at the bottom of their respective divisions with identical 4-10 records.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles sent Pederson, Jaguars cheesesteaks after win over Cowboys
The Jacksonville Jaguars received an unexpected gift from the Philadelphia Eagles following Sunday's victory over the Dallas Cowboys. To show Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson appreciation for beating their NFC East rivals, the Eagles had 35 cheesesteaks and 25 large fries delivered to TIAA Bank Field from Jacksonville restaurant Philly's Finest on Monday.Philly's Finest owner Jeff Harris told Alexandria Mansfield of the Florida Times-Union that he initially thought it was a customer claiming to be the Eagles, but someone from the organization confirmed they had placed the order."We have a lot of Philly transplants," Harris said. "So it wasn't that crazy, but it was definitely unexpected to get a call from the Eagles."A spokesperson for the Jaguars told the Times-Union that the cheesesteaks "were promptly eaten" after they arrived at the office.Philly sits at 13-1 and is now just one win away from clinching the top seed in the NFC. The team will face the 10-4 Cowboys on Saturday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Colts bench Ryan for 2nd time, Foles named starter
The Indianapolis Colts are replacing Matt Ryan with Nick Foles for Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Jeff Saturday announced Wednesday. It's the second time this season the Colts have demoted Ryan. The plan is for Foles to finish out the season under center."Ultimately, I feel like Nick will give us a better chance to go win these last three games," Saturday said, according to The Athletic's Zak Keefer. The Colts benched Ryan for Sam Ehlinger earlier this season when Frank Reich was Indy's coach. The veteran regained the starting role once Saturday was hired following Reich's dismissal.Ryan posted a 1-4 record after returning to the starting lineup in Week 10. His move to the bench comes after the Colts allowed the Minnesota Vikings to mount an NFL-record 33-point comeback in a Week 15 loss. The 37-year-old has posted a 4-7-1 record during the 2022 season with 14 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.Monday's contest will mark Foles' first start since Week 16 of the 2021 season. The then-Chicago Bear threw for 250 yards with one touchdown to no interceptions in a victory over the Seattle Seahawks.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jerry Jones: Cowboys' chances of signing Odell diminish each day
The probability of Odell Beckham Jr. donning a Dallas Cowboys jersey is shrinking with every passing day.Owner Jerry Jones said last week "there's a good chance" Beckham signs with the franchise. But he seemed more pessimistic about a potential deal during an appearance Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan's "Shan & RJ.""As of this morning, we don't have anything," Jones said. "The reality is, though, that time is moving on down the road relative to playing in the playoffs and so every day diminishes our chances of going forward."The Cowboys are one of many suitors to show interest in Beckham, who suffered a torn ACL in last season's Super Bowl. However, the franchise was reportedly concerned that Beckham would need more time to recover after he embarked on a free-agent visit to Dallas. The Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, and Kansas City Chiefs have also been linked to Beckham. The Cowboys did add one veteran wideout last week, signing former Indianapolis Colts receiver T.Y. NFL Week 16 teasers: On its last legs
Just when teasers got profitable, we're in our last week of digging deep into the "teaser basket." While the NFL extended its season to 18 games, Week 17 still marks the point where late-season results are less reliable.Games between two teams that are giving a predictable level of effort are fewer and farther between this late in the season. Lines will be inflated toward a team with something to play for, even though the underdog is still playing hard, and other games lined around pick'em might have one team decidedly more interested in the season than the other. Things get weird in Week 17 and Week 18, which isn't ideal for a bet that's based on the point spread ringing true - especially when players willingly lateral the football in the middle of plays when the situation doesn't call for it.Some games don't have a teaser-worthy point spread. For example, teasing the Chiefs -9.5 at home against the Seahawks would bring the spread down to -3.5, which doesn't capture the key number of -3. While the Chiefs are expected to win comfortably, they often find themselves in games more competitive than expected.Teasing the Seahawks to +15.5 is somewhat appealing, but the worry looms that the Chiefs could blow out Seattle, which has been struggling lately. Getting +10 through +15.5 over a big sample size isn't worth the price hike over -270.Elsewhere on Christmas Eve, the Ravens are 7.5-point favorites, moving up from a lookahead of -6.5 and a Sunday re-opening of -7. The market likes the Ravens' chances of winning, and while we might not be looking to lay 7.5 points with their offense - even with Lamar Jackson - we can still take this spread down through both -7 and -3. A closer look, using alternative line prices, shows the value of teasing down.ALT. SPREADODDSRavens -6.5-145Ravens -5.5-175Ravens -4.5-188Ravens -3.5-210Ravens -2.5-330Ravens -1.5-345The pricing significantly jumps between Ravens -3.5 (-210) and Ravens -2.5 (-330), showing the importance of capturing the -3 number in NFL betting. More importantly, the Ravens' alternative spread (-1.5) is priced at -345, which is much higher than getting the team at -1.5 with a teaser leg at around -270.To get an incredible deal on Ravens -1.5, we must pair them with another bet and win both to cash the ticket. Fortunately, we can choose that other leg from our weekly "teaser basket" using what we know about key numbers.Teaser basketLet's look at the mathematically optimal plays available for Week 16:TEAMSPREADTEASER LEGRavens-7.5-1.5Panthers+2.5+8.5Saints+3+949ers-7-1Packers+4.5+10.5Rams+2+8Buccaneers-6.5-0.5Baltimore is a particularly good teaser leg because Desmond Ridder didn't exactly light it up in his Falcons debut (13/26, 97 yards, 4 sacks) and now faces a better defensive front in a tough environment. The Panthers got bullied by the Steelers last week, proving they're better left as underdogs even at home to equally mediocre teams. Pittsburgh was the valuable teaser leg last week, getting pushed up to +8.5, but now it's the Panthers getting those points over a touchdown against the Lions. The Saints still have playoff hopes, but the reason to tease them up to +9 is twofold. First, a nearing historical low game total suggests that every point will be more valuable than usual. Secondly, with comically high winds in the forecast for Cleveland, kicking will be difficult, which can throw a game off of key numbers thanks to missed PATs.We'll include an 'off-brand' teaser leg, with the Packers at +4.5 teased up to +10.5. We can expect a top-level effort from still-alive Green Bay, and in this case, we can use the market as a hint. This line opened at Packers +6 and has moved Green Bay's way. While there's considerable value lost on the Packers against the spread with that move, a teaser line going from +12 to +10.5 doesn't lose nearly as much win probability. The Rams and Broncos are a good example of a prime teaser leg, with a game total in the mid-30s. They're also a good example of our point above - we're not sure what to expect from either team when it comes to motivation this late in the season.Lastly, compare a teaser leg price (-270 to -280) of the 49ers and the Buccaneers to their available moneylines to see if you're making a valuable bet on either of those to win outright.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. NFL betting: How Jalen Hurts' injury affects the landscape
Late in the Eagles' 25-20 win over the Bears on Sunday, Jalen Hurts took the brunt of a Chicago defender's weight. He finished the game but was diagnosed with a sprained shoulder Monday. While Hurts hasn't been ruled out of Saturday's game against the Cowboys in Dallas, the betting market seems to think caution will rule the day.Hurts was the MVP favorite going into Week 15, so his injury has ramifications in numerous betting markets. Here are the three levels of Hurts' pain:1) Game-to-game ratingEagles @ Cowboys (-6)Some bettors may be surprised to find out the Cowboys are small favorites (-1.5) against the Eagles. As we tracked through the first three-quarters of the season, the Eagles and Cowboys were eventually rated equally in betting markets. Add in 1.5 points for home-field advantage, and you have the originally projected point spread. We like to use a 1-100 scale in this space, and the NFC East rivals were both rated in the high 60s, occasionally touching 70 depending on the week. Where do the Eagles rate now with Gardner Minshew likely playing Saturday?Following reports of Hurts' injury, the line for the Christmas Eve showdown was on the move, touching Cowboys -6.5 before encountering resistance and settling at -6. Working backward, that means the market thinks the Minshew-led Eagles are a 50/100 - purely league average. Other teams rated in the range are the Packers, Lions, and Vikings. Bettors should ask themselves if this is where this version of the Eagles should be.2) FuturesSuper Bowl (+550) / NFC champion (+130)The Eagles are two games ahead of the Vikings and own the tiebreaker with three games to go. They'd have to lose all their remaining games, and both the Cowboys and Vikings would have to run the table for the Eagles to not get the bye. Assuming what we know about Hurts' injury is true, his next crucial game is likely a month from now, which shouldn't change the Eagles' likelihood of making the Super Bowl. In fact, a loss to the Cowboys this weekend might result in an adjustment that would create a buy opportunity on Philadelphia.MVP (Hurts +550)Hurts was a hot bet before the campaign, going from 45-1 early in the offseason to 25-1 before a game was played. He went to the odds-on favorite in the last couple of weeks. His injury has pushed Patrick Mahomes to the favorite at -350, but Hurts' odds of +550 are an in-between position on whether he'll be back in the regular season. If he misses the final games, it's highly unlikely he can win, but oddsmakers can't make him 50-1 on the chance he misses just this one game. We'd like to believe that Hurts' status as MVP front-runner through 14 games means that missing mostly meaningless games down the stretch wouldn't kill his candidacy, but we know that's not how voters' short attention spans work. Josh Allen (+600) and Joe Burrow (+600) have a prime-time showdown coming up as well.Coach of the Year (Nick Sirianni -190)Speaking of the "what have you done for me lately" element in award markets, Lions coach Dan Campbell was anywhere from 200-1 to 150-1 two weeks ago. After wins over the Vikings and Jets, he's now +185.Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was at around -400 before the Bears game. The Eagles are less likely to win this Saturday, which means they're less likely to finish with a record of 16-1 or even 15-2. A 14-3 season is impressive, but candidates like Campbell, Kevin O'Connell (+2500), Brian Daboll (+3000), and Doug Pederson (+3000) all oversaw epic turnarounds.3) Other games: Six degrees of separationThe final element of this sequence is how Saturday's game will affect the two teams' remaining contests and their opponents. Whose games get easier, and whose games get harder?Eagles' opponentsWith this mediocre rating for Philadelphia, it'd be -3 against the Saints in Week 17 and -5.5 against the Giants in the finale. Not ideal for either team, but better off than what their odds would've been without the uncertainty over Hurts. The Saints (+1600) need a lot more help in order to win the NFC South - their best route to the playoffs. The Giants boosted their chances with a win in Washington and benefit from their matchup with the Eagles coming in Week 18 - when Philadelphia may have nothing to play for. New York is -700 to make the playoffs, so there's no positive bet to make there. But that could be an overreaction that makes the Giants missing the playoffs (+425) worth a look.Cowboys' opponentsIf the Cowboys win this week, they'd become more hopeful they can win the NFC East. That should have them fully engaged in a Week 17 game at Tennessee. Given the battle the Titans are in for the AFC South, a bet on the Jaguars (+120) is worth a play given they'll have home field for a Week 18 divisional showdown.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Taylor to miss rest of season with ankle injury
The Indianapolis Colts will be without running back Jonathan Taylor for the remainder of the season after placing him on injured reserve Tuesday, the team announced.Taylor suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.Indianapolis fell to 4-9-1 after the Vikings engineered the largest comeback in NFL history, erasing a 33-point deficit to win in overtime.Taylor, who missed three games earlier in the year with an ankle injury, wasn't able to replicate his All-Pro form from 2021 amid major struggles for Indianapolis' offense. He rushed for 861 yards and four touchdowns in 11 appearances after leading the NFL with 1,811 yards and 18 rushing scores last season.Zack Moss and Deon Jackson will likely lead the Colts' backfield for the rest of the year.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Hurts has shoulder sprain, uncertain for Week 16 vs. Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a shoulder sprain in Sunday's win over the Chicago Bears and is uncertain to play in Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed Tuesday."He sprained his shoulder. ... He is attacking his rehab. We'll see what happens this week," Sirianni told the "WIP Morning Show," according to Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94 WIP. The coach added, "(It's) not something we deem long term."Sirianni added that Hurts has a chance to start against the Cowboys."There's a chance he could play this week," Sirianni said, according to Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports. "He's one of the toughest guys I know. His body is not like yours or mine. He heals fast. I will not rule him out. I will not put a timetable on him. We'll see what happens."It's a sprain to his right throwing shoulder, reports NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark.Hurts was injured late in the third quarter when Bears defensive end Trevis Gipson landed on him while making a tackle. The passer was slow to get up but remained in the game. The 24-year-old is an MVP candidate and enjoying a terrific season. He's led Philadelphia to a 13-1 record, totaling 4,219 yards and 35 touchdowns.Eagles backup quarterback Gardner Minshew would be slated to start against Dallas if Hurts can't go. Minshew started two games for Philadelphia last season. He led the Eagles to a win over the New York Jets in Week 13 and started against the Cowboys in the season finale.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Steelers' Pickett expected to return for prime-time clash vs. Raiders
The Pittsburgh Steelers are planning for Kenny Pickett to start Saturday night's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.Pickett missed last week's contest due to being in the concussion protocol, which Tomlin said is now "behind" the signal-caller.Mitch Trubisky started in Pickett's place during Sunday's victory over the Carolina Panthers. The veteran threw for 179 yards and added a rushing touchdown in the 24-16 win.Selected in the first round of the 2022 draft, Pickett took over the starting job in Week 5. He's won four of his nine starts and thrown for four touchdowns to eight interceptions. He also has three rushing touchdowns. Both the Steelers and Raiders head into Saturday's clash fighting to stay alive in the AFC playoff picture. Jets to start Wilson on TNF vs. Jaguars with White out again
Quarterback Zach Wilson will start Thursday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with Mike White still not cleared for contact, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It will be the second consecutive game missed for White, who injured his ribs in Week 14. White took over the starting job from Wilson in Week 12 and posted a 1-2 record.Wilson completed 18 of his 35 passes for 317 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's loss to the Detroit Lions. The Jets benched the former second overall pick due to a string of poor performances. However, Saleh has stood behind Wilson throughout the ordeal. The coach told reporters Monday that he believes Wilson "is going to be a good quarterback."A three-game losing streak has dropped the Jets outside the AFC's playoff picture. New York holds an identical 7-7 record to the New England Patriots but trails the 8-6 Miami Dolphins for the final wild-card spot.Wilson has thrown for six touchdowns to six interceptions across eight starts this season. Eagles' Goedert activated, reportedly set to play vs. Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert was activated to the 53-man roster, the team announced Tuesday.Goedert is expected to play Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.The 27-year-old Goedert was placed on injured reserve Nov. 16 after suffering a shoulder injury. His 21-day practice window opened last week, but he was not activated for the Eagles' game against the Chicago Bears. With Gardner Minshew on track to start against the Cowboys, an essential piece of the Eagles' offense returns to help the team's backup quarterback.Goedert had six catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns in one of Minshew's starts in 2021.The veteran tight end has 43 catches for 544 yards and three touchdowns in nine games this season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rams' Stafford: I won't retire after 2022 season
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford doesn't intend to retire after the 2022 season, he said during an appearance on "The Morning After with Kelly Stafford" podcast. The 34-year-old quarterback endured multiple injuries this season, drawing speculation that he could decide to hang it up after the year. Stafford landed on the concussion protocol twice this year, with his second stint putting him on injured reserve after it was revealed he was dealing with a bruised spinal cord.Stafford also dealt with an elbow injury coming into the 2022 campaign after reportedly undergoing surgery in the offseason. The Rams rewarded Stafford with a four-year extension worth $160 million after he led the franchise to a Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. The deal keeps the veteran signal-caller under contract until the 2026 campaign.Stafford went 3-6 in nine starts for the Rams this season. The bad news is that the defense has allowed more than 27 in three of those matchups.7. Detroit Lions (7-7)Previous Rank: 8The Lions enter Week 16 with a 13-game takeaway streak. The Jets will need him to make some major improvements to keep their playoff hopes alive.14. New York Giants (8-5-1)Previous Rank: 18A huge win over the Commanders puts the Giants in the driver's seat for one of the NFC's final wild-card spots. This team continues to find a way.15. Washington Commanders (7-6-1) The Washington Post / The Washington Post / GettyPrevious Rank: 11Falling to the Giants was a major setback for the Commanders. Their remaining schedule might make it difficult for them to hold onto a playoff spot.16. The division could all come down to a winner-take-all game in Week 18.17. Seattle Seahawks (7-7)Previous Rank: 15The Seahawks sure have cooled off in a hurry. Losing four of their last five games, with the Chiefs up next, suddenly makes the playoffs seem like a long shot.18. Green Bay Packers (6-8)Previous Rank: 19Can the Packers run the table and sneak into the playoffs? With the offense having figured things out of late, it'll likely be up to the defense. One way or the other, a matchup against the Dolphins on Christmas Day should tell us everything we need to know.19. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-8)Previous Rank: 22The Steelers have quietly been playing solid football over the last month. This could be a complete team if the passing attack can get it together.22. The roller-coaster ride continues.23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-8)Previous Rank: 20We can add another embarrassing loss for the 2022 Bucs, who blew a 17-point lead to the Bengals at home. Luckily for Tampa Bay, this year's NFC South might be the worst division in NFL history.24. Carolina Panthers (5-9)Previous Rank: 21The loss to Pittsburgh snapped Carolina's two-game win streak, but it doesn't change the fact that the Panthers will clinch the NFC South if they win their final three games.25. New Orleans Saints (5-9) Chris Graythen / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 30It wasn't pretty, but the Saints had a perfect week. They swept their season series against the Falcons and saw the Bucs and Panthers lose. The NFC South title is within striking distance for New Orleans.26. Denver Broncos (4-10)Previous Rank: 31The Broncos scored 24 points in Brett Rypien's first start this season, which is more than Denver has scored in any game with Russell Wilson under center. The team put up 28 points last week, but only 21 were with Wilson at quarterback.29. Arizona Cardinals (4-10)Previous Rank: 24It's been a disastrous season for the Cardinals, who were officially eliminated from playoff contention with Sunday's loss.30. Chicago Bears (3-11) Michael Reaves / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 28There aren't many exciting reasons to watch the Bears in 2022 other than Justin Fields' ability to make plays with his legs. At least Chicago's defense gave Philadelphia's high-scoring offense a hard time.31. Houston Texans (1-12-1)Previous Rank: 32Good news: The Texans had fourth-quarter leads against Dallas and Kansas City in their last two games. The bad: They remain the league's only one-win team.32. Indianapolis Colts (4-9-1)Previous Rank: 29After suffering a 54-19 defeat to the Cowboys two weeks ago, the Colts blew a record 33-point lead to the Vikings on Sunday. Jets' Saleh supports Zach Wilson, blasts NFL's 'instant-coffee' era
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Monday it's just a matter of time until quarterback Zach Wilson establishes himself as a solid NFL player."The frustrating thing is that this kid is going to be a good quarterback, but the NFL and this new instant-coffee world that we're in just doesn't want to give people time," Saleh said, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. "So, we look at him and he's just nitpicked with a fine-tooth comb."Saleh's comments come a day after the Jets suffered a 20-17 home loss to the Detroit Lions. Saleh and his coaching staff benched Wilson for Mike White before Week 12, but White didn't face the Lions due to a ribs injury. Wilson, who struggled in seven starts early this season, completed 18 of 35 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns against one interception versus Detroit."I'm really pumped for him because, in his past, when he hit a speed bump in a game, he kind of derails," Saleh said of Wilson, who struggled in the third quarter Sunday. "But I thought he did a really good job of getting back on the rails and swinging back up in the fourth quarter to lead a touchdown drive."Wilson has failed to meet expectations since entering the NFL as the second overall pick in 2021. The 23-year-old tossed only nine touchdowns against 11 picks in 13 appearances as a rookie. He's passed for only six scores through eight games this year while posting a 54.9% completion rate, down from 55.6% in 2021.Despite showing support for Wilson, Saleh refused to name a starter for Thursday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. White, who wasn't cleared for contact before Week 15, is still being evaluated by team doctors. He completed 62% of his passes for three touchdowns to two interceptions in three starts this year. The 7-7 Jets are currently the No. 9 seed in the AFC. Jaguars' Cam Robinson out for season with knee injury
Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, head coach Doug Pederson said Monday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Robinson suffered a torn meniscus in the Jaguars' win over the Dallas Cowboys. The 27-year-old started all 14 games for the Jaguars this season. He was a second-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2014 and signed a three-year contract extension in April.Walker Little is expected to fill in for Robinson at left tackle. A second-round pick in 2021, he started three games for the Jaguars last season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Bengals' Apple: We shut down Brady by getting 'that old man tap dancing'
Tom Brady seemed to have the Cincinnati Bengals' number during the first half of Sunday's game, racking up 194 yards and two touchdowns as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers grabbed a 17-3 lead. But the Bucs' offense quickly fell apart in the second half. The Bengals changed their pass-rush approach, forcing the quarterback into four consecutive turnovers - two interceptions and two fumbles - en route to scoring 34 unanswered points.Cincinnati cornerback Eli Apple said his team's second-half resurgence was fueled by a plan to get the 45-year-old Brady off his spot and on the run."Got to get that old man tap dancing, man," Apple said, according to The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr. "Got to get him out of the pocket and get him uncomfortable."When asked about Brady's first-half performance, Apple added, "He was fairly OK, but not good enough to win."Previously, Brady-led teams had earned a 159-3 record and gone 89-0 at home when leading by 17 points at any moment in the game, according to Yahoo Sports' Charles McDonald. While Brady has struggled to play up to his lofty standards this season - he has failed to throw more than one touchdown in nine games - he was minimizing mistakes over the first 11 contests, throwing only two interceptions. But the signal-caller now has six total turnovers in his last two outings after tossing two picks against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14.Brady and the 6-8 Bucs will look to stay in the lead of the NFC South on the road against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. MNF best bets: Unpacking Packers' playoff chances against Rams
Each Monday, we'll finish off the week that was in the NFL with a look at value spots in the remaining game - under one condition: You promise not to chase. Whether Sunday provided a boost to the accounts or left a little to be desired, Monday Night Football offers an opportunity to show responsibility in your betting, as there'll always be another wild Sunday to get lost in.It's hard to believe, but a viable path exists for the Packers to make the playoffs. The help they need is within reason. While Green Bay has to run the table, there's just one road contest left (at Miami), and Monday's matchup is the first of three remaining games at Lambeau Field. A wild-card spot isn't out of the question. The 4-9 Rams don't have that same path despite producing one of the last-minute comebacks of the year in Week 14 at home against the Raiders. In Baker Mayfield's debut with L.A., the quarterback took a crash course in Sean McVey's offense and aced the test after crushing the metaphorical essay question in the two-minute drill.Rams @ Packers (-7, 39.5)The Rams have one of the worst rush offenses in the league, but they've shown improvement in their last three games. However, part of that came from using mobile quarterback Bryce Perkins and facing the Seahawks' terrible run defense. The Packers aren't very good at stopping the run, as just two teams have allowed more yards per carry in 2022. But this matchup should feel like something of a reprieve considering their last four games have come against Justin Fields, Jalen Hurts, Derrick Henry, and Josh Allen. That's a group of running threats you have to be wary of, and even the best game plans might be futile against them.Mayfield had 10 more days to learn Sean McVay's offense for Monday's contest, but he and Cam Akers shouldn't be as dangerous for Green Bay's defense. Defensive signal-caller De'Vondre Campbell returned from a month off before the Packers' bye, and the club's defense held the Bears to three field goals in the final three quarters of a season-extending win. However, this line should be higher based on the Rams' market rating heading into their home game against Las Vegas when they were nearly a touchdown underdog combined with the common rating of the Packers as an average team.Admittedly, laying significant points with Green Bay hasn't been a profitable strategy for bettors this season. Still, those other situations had Aaron Rodgers woefully out-of-sync with his pass-catchers. Also, the Giants and Jets - two teams the Packers lost against - have proven better than the market had thought at the time.I'm willing to have a bet die on the hill that Los Angeles with Mayfield isn't better than we think. The team trailed the Raiders 16-3 through 57 minutes and finished with just 282 yards of offense, even after a pair of late touchdown drives. With a healthier Rodgers able to connect with Allen Lazard, Christian Watson, and Robert Tonyan and an effective run game that Green Bay's leaned on, this sets us up as the best situation for the Packers to play their best contest. That should be good enough to cover a full touchdown.Pick: Packers -7AJ Dillon over 10.5 receiving yardsDillon's had the lion's share of the snaps against the Bears, and the Packers have successfully integrated him into the passing game over the last two matchups. With blustery conditions perfect for a big, punishing tailback, we'll expect Dillon to be on the field a lot Monday night. Look for Rodgers to use him as an outlet in the passing game and for Dillon to go over this low receiving total.Baker Mayfield longest pass completion under 33.5 yardsMayfield's had just one pass completion longer than 34 yards since Week 1, and that was a short throw to Laviska Shenault that the Panthers' receiver turned into a long touchdown. Given the Rams will focus on trying to run against Green Bay in freezing conditions and Los Angeles' offensive line has struggled to protect for long stretches, we'll bet against a long pass completion for Mayfield.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 15 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.Jags here to stay Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyAll aboard the Jaguars bandwagon. It's been a bumpy ride in Year 1 under Doug Pederson. There have been just as many downs as there have been ups, with numerous moments making it seem like a true return to playoff contention was still at least another year away. Well, forget that. The time is here.Following up a magical comeback win over the Ravens with a blowout loss to the Lions seemingly threatened to derail any hopes the Jaguars had of making a late run. But they bounced back with a convincing win over the Titans last week before edging the Cowboys on Sunday in their most impressive performance yet.Key to it all was Trevor Lawrence continuing his run of stellar play. The second-year quarterback outplayed counterpart Dak Prescott for much of the game, throwing for 318 yards and recording four touchdown passes for the first time in his career. As we saw in the comeback win over the Ravens, the poise required to lead his team back late was everything we thought we'd get from the former No. 1 overall pick.A patchwork Jaguars defense did its part, too. The unit made several timely plays to get Dallas off the field, a big stop to give Lawrence one more chance to tie it up late in regulation, and, to cap it off, Rayshawn Jenkins' pick-6 won it in overtime.Jacksonville's recent offseason moves have reeked of desperation, with free-agent deals for Jenkins and Zay Jones, among countless others, being seen as overpays. Don't look now, but Jenkins' two-interception day was by far his best game with the Jaguars. And although Jones didn't really have much left to prove on that front, having thrived as Lawrence's WR2 throughout the season, he terrorized the Cowboys for three touchdowns. The defense still isn't very good, and that's unlikely to change until it can add talent in the offseason. But if that unit can continue to make a few plays here and there, stealing extra possessions for what is suddenly a potent offense, this team can hang with anyone in the AFC playoff picture. And with Tennessee in the midst of a four-game slide, Jacksonville may just get an opportunity to prove it.Now 6-8, the Jaguars sit just one game back of the Titans and control their own destiny. They already beat their AFC South rivals in their first matchup, and the second game will be the Week 18 finale. Close out the season with wins over the Jets, Texans, and Titans, and they're division champs. It's too bad Urban Meyer doesn't watch NFL football. His old team is officially fun as hell.Lions chasing playoffs Al Bello / Getty Images Sport / GettyWe've been over this enough already - the Lions are legit. Consider them the NFC version of the Jaguars, except perhaps even better. It was always going to be difficult for them to dig themselves out of a 1-6 hole, but they just may do it.Sunday's win over the Jets - the latest step in confirming everything we all wanted to believe about this team - gives the Lions wins in six of their last seven games, getting them back to .500 at 7-7.Still left on the schedule are games against the Panthers, Bears, and Packers. Not to get Detroit fans too excited, but those should all be victories with the way this team is playing right now. Sweep the finish, and things start getting really interesting in the NFC.With the Giants (8-5-1), Commanders (7-6-1), and Seahawks (7-7) all playing their own brands of mediocre football of late, and with each team finishing the year with far more challenging opponents, 10-7 should be all the Lions need to get into one of the last two wild-card spots. If you're the Vikings or 49ers, the Lions are not who you want to see on Wild Card Weekend. Their offense has found the perfect formula to maximize all the talent in place on that side of the ball. Their defense, for all its faults, has quietly been trending in the right direction and starting to pull its weight. The Lions are still playing the long game here. The future is the priority, and all indications are that they've got the right people in place to finally build a sustained winner in Detroit. Any playoff success this year would be a bonus. But this team is going to be the darling of the NFL playoffs if it can finish the job and lock up a spot. Who won't be pulling for the Lions to get their first postseason win since 1991?Dolphins ready for January Kevin Sabitus / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe big story from Saturday's nightcap was Josh Allen going into superhero mode and leading the Bills to a huge win in the snow. It was the star quarterback's best game in over a month, silencing some recent questions about the Buffalo offense, and a reminder of just how unstoppable this team can be.But was anyone really doubting that the Bills would figure it out? They'll be a top Super Bowl contender for as long as Allen continues to dominate while breaking all the conventional rules of playing the position. Nothing new here. The Dolphins, on the other hand, had something to prove in this one. And while the result didn't go their way in the end, making it three straight losses after an 8-3 start, we should all be feeling pretty good about Miami heading into the playoffs. As much as football analysis can tend to overrate the impact of weather, it was only natural to wonder whether this was a team that would fall off a cliff in the snowy elements. The Dolphins' offense is built on big plays in the passing game, ranking second only to the Chiefs in explosive gains through the air (20-plus yards), and Tua Tagovailoa hadn't exactly fared well in previous, albeit limited, cold-weather games. Miami also runs the ball as infrequently as any other team league-wide.But good teams make adjustments when necessary. That's exactly what the coaching staff did from the opening snap, getting Tagovailoa out of the shotgun and making a point of leaning on the under-center run game. The result was 188 rushing yards against Buffalo's top-five run defense, and rather than a high-volume approach to the passing game, the Dolphins were able to pick their spots to attack downfield. In the end, Tagovailoa still connected on five explosive plays, just one short of matching a season high. With the Dolphins seemingly destined for a wild-card spot - and faced with the possibility of road games against the likes of the Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals - proving that they can go shot for shot with a Super Bowl favorite in less-than-ideal conditions is a meaningful statement. This team is going to be a tough out in January, no matter where the game is played.Vikings make history Adam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyYou know all about this one by now. Somehow storming back after trailing 33-0, the Vikings knocked off the Colts to break the record for the largest comeback in NFL history. There are two polar-opposite ways you can look at this outcome, and neither would necessarily be wrong.First and foremost, it was an incredible second-half performance from Minnesota. The Vikings' defense stepped up to keep the game within reach, and the offensive playmakers took over to lead the comeback. Once they got a few scores on the board, it felt like they were only playing against the clock; afforded the necessary time, the Colts weren't going to do much to slow them down. The other way you can look at this, if you're not so inclined to get swept up in the fun, is that being down 33-0 to the Colts is just confirmation of why the Vikings are hard to believe in.The results have been undeniably great: An 11-3 record has locked up the NFC North and makes the No. 2 seed Minnesota's to lose. And as we saw in the scoring spree, you can only contain the stars on this offense for so long before they inevitably break through. But the Vikings have felt more like pretenders than contenders for much of this year, and requiring a historic performance to beat the Colts doesn't really change that.Needing perfection from your offense to overcome all else, as was the case in the second half Saturday afternoon, isn't a recipe for success in the playoffs against defenses like the 49ers, Eagles, and Cowboys. In fact, they'll need better across the board to even get to those games. With the Lions trying to chase down that last wild-card spot, and a potential third matchup with their division rival, the Vikings could even have their hands full in the first round.Quick slantsBucs melt down Julio Aguilar / Getty Images Sport / GettySunday's game against the Bengals couldn't have started much better for the Bucs, going into halftime with a 17-3 lead over a team that has eyes on returning to the Super Bowl. After the break, though, it couldn't have gone much worse. With a failed fake punt, an interception, and then back-to-back fumbles, Tampa Bay turned it over in its own territory on four consecutive possessions. Cincinnati capitalized with 24 points on those opportunities, building a two-score lead by early in the fourth quarter and effectively putting the game out of reach. It remains a travesty that this team, or perhaps another NFC South club, is going to get the honor of hosting a playoff game.All-time blunderSurely you've seen it by this point. If not, do yourself a favor and go watch the Patriots losing to the Raiders in the most hilarious way imaginable. Rather than settling for overtime on a final play going nowhere, Rhamondre Stevenson and Jakobi Meyers started a lateral play. But Chandler Jones picked off Meyers' effort to launch the ball back across the field, stiff-armed a helpless Mac Jones to the ground, and took it back for the walk-off touchdown. Football is a wild game - nobody is immune to this kind of lowlight. But to see the Patriots lose in this manner, after an entire generation of fans grew up knowing them as nothing other than a dynasty, was strange to process. That it at least temporarily bumped them out of the playoff picture is only fitting.Wilson steps inMike White's absence forced the Jets to turn back to Zach Wilson against the Lions after two weeks on the bench. On the surface, a 317-yard, two-touchdown performance looks like the kind of game the Jets have been waiting for from the former No. 2 overall pick. There were indeed a few big plays, to his credit, but this was another day filled with mistakes and missed opportunities - the quarterback position once again kept the Jets from a better result. If White can't return in time for Thursday's game against the Jaguars, the Jets should seriously consider going to Joe Flacco. Even when he's avoiding the circus turnovers, and flashing with the occasional big throws, Wilson just leaves too many plays on the field. Why bet on that in a game that could go a long way toward deciding your playoff fate?McKinnon the playmaker Carmen Mandato / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe more the Chiefs cycle through different options at running back, the more it becomes clear that Jerick McKinnon is their guy. He'll never be a high-volume ball carrier, meaning the numbers will never quite stand out on a season-long basis, but he does everything you could possibly want from a backfield running mate for Patrick Mahomes. He racked up 122 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in Sunday's win over the Texans, including a 26-yard run to win it in overtime. Isiah Pacheco is more than deserving of a role as the lead ball carrier, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire will get some work when he returns from injury, but McKinnon's ability as a receiver, not to mention his underrated upside as a slashing runner, has earned him the right to lead that group in snaps when we get to the playoffs.Ridder strugglesArthur Smith resisting playing Desmond Ridder until the games no longer mattered for his team is suddenly starting to make sense. The third-round rookie had a debut to forget in Atlanta's loss to New Orleans, completing half of his 26 attempts for just 97 passing yards and no touchdowns. The running game kept the Falcons in it, going for 231 yards on the day, but getting next to nothing from their young quarterback was ultimately the difference in the three-point loss. Looking back at the calls for Smith to bench Marcus Mariota while the Falcons were still in playoff contention, perhaps it's important to remember that the coaching staff knows far better than us whether the backup has done anything in practice to deserve the starting job.Chargers on their wayIt wasn't pretty, but the Titans don't like to make anything easy for their opponents. The important part is that the Chargers got this win against the best team on their remaining schedule, clearing the way for them to really take off down the stretch. L.A. is now 8-6 and sitting comfortably in the second of three AFC wild-card spots. With games against the Colts, Rams, and Broncos up next, there's no reason this team shouldn't finish 11-6. And with the Ravens sputtering, that could be enough to give them the No. 5 seed and a first-round matchup with whoever ends up winning the AFC South. With Joey Bosa, Rashawn Slater, and Derwin James all on the way back, the Chargers have a chance to make some real noise.Stat of the week

Raiders, Patriots react to all-time ending: 'I really couldn't breathe'
New England Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers gifted the Las Vegas Raiders a victory Sunday and provided the NFL with one of its craziest finishes ever thanks to an almost unthinkable lateral blunder.Tied with just three seconds left in regulation, Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson took a carry downfield before flipping the ball back to Meyers. The Patriots wideout then elected to make a lateral back to quarterback Mac Jones. However, the launch was plucked by Chandler Jones, who ran it back 48 yards for a Raiders game-winning touchdown.
Cardinals down to 3rd-string QB as McCoy suffers concussion
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy left Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos due to a concussion.McCoy appeared to sustain the injury after keeping the ball on a third-and-1 run in the third quarter. He remained on the ground for an extended period before leaving to the locker room under his own power.Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said postgame that McCoy is in concussion protocol.Trace McSorley replaced McCoy following the injury. Arizona entered the Week 15 matchup with just two healthy passers after starter Kyler Murray suffered a season-ending ACL injury last week.Kingsbury said prior to the matchup that the emergency quarterback would likely be running back Corey Clement in the event of injuries to both McCoy and McSorley.McCoy completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 78 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception prior to his early exit. The veteran signal-caller has posted a 3-2 record in his starts for the Cardinals over the past two seasons.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Andy Reid: Something is wrong if Mahomes doesn't win MVP
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Sunday that Patrick Mahomes' performance in a 30-24 overtime victory over the Houston Texans proves why the superstar quarterback deserves to win the MVP award."He took care of business. ... You're talking about a guy that, if he's not the MVP of the league, I'm not sure what's wrong with it," Reid said postgame, according to Harold R. Kuntz of FOX4 News.Reid continued: "He cleaned it up and we had almost 500 yards of offense, minus 100 (yards) of penalties, but that was a pretty spectacular day there."Mahomes completed 36 of 41 pass attempts - including 20 straight to end the game - for 336 yards and two touchdowns versus Houston to go along with 33 yards and one score on the ground. Kansas City improved to 11-3 and clinched its seventh consecutive AFC West title. The former MVP's 87.8% completion rate in Week 15 is the highest in NFL history in a game with 40-plus pass attempts.Mahomes now leads the league with 4,496 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. The 27-year-old, who's tossed 11 interceptions, also has two rushing scores."I think he's shown that he's the best quarterback in the National Football League," Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said Sunday, according to Arrowhead Report's Jordan Foote. With three weeks left in the regular season, the MVP race is likely down to Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts threw two interceptions in Sunday's win over the Chicago Bears but also put up three rushing touchdowns. He's thrown for 3,472 yards and 22 touchdowns to five picks in 2022 while helping Philly post a 13-1 record. Hurts has also racked up 747 yards and 12 scores on the ground.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Titans' Tannehill returns vs. Chargers despite ankle injury
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill returned to Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers after being carted to the locker room due to an ankle injury.Tannehill suffered the injury on a third-down run in the first quarter and was originally listed as questionable to return. Rookie Malik Willis entered the game at quarterback for Tennessee, going 3-for-4 passing with 20 yards while replacing Tannehill during one series.

Vikings mount largest comeback in NFL history to stun Colts, clinch NFC North
The Minnesota Vikings stormed back from a 33-point deficit to complete the biggest comeback in NFL history and stun the Indianapolis Colts 39-36 in overtime. The Vikings' largest deficit of the day came at halftime when they trailed 33-0. After falling behind 36-7, Minnesota capped off an unanswered 32-point run that ended with a Greg Joseph field goal to win in the extra session. With the win, the Vikings clinched their first NFC North title since the 2017 campaign.A strong second half from Kirk Cousins powered the franchise to its triumph over the Colts. After throwing a pick-6 in the second quarter, Cousins responded with four second-half touchdown passes. He finished the day with 460 passing yards and a 99.3 passer rating.Dalvin Cook forced overtime after ripping off a heroic 64-yard catch-and-run score on a dump-off pass from Cousins with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.Meanwhile, star wideout Justin Jefferson was also on the receiving end of a Cousins touchdown throw and accumulated 123 receiving yards. K.J. Osborn led the team with 157 receiving yards. The Colts appeared to be in position to clinch a win in regulation before a quarterback sneak attempt by Matt Ryan late in the fourth quarter was ruled short. Ryan threw for 182 yards in the loss with one touchdown and zero interceptions.Indianapolis was without running back Jonathan Taylor for the majority of the game due to an ankle injury. The result moves the Vikings to 10-0 in one-score games this season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys activate Tyron Smith from IR for season debut
The Dallas Cowboys activated offensive tackle Tyron Smith from injured reserve ahead of Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced Saturday. The eight-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman participated in his first padded practice of the season on Thursday.Smith, who has logged over 7,000 career snaps at left tackle, was spotted working at right tackle during practice this week. He has previous experience anchoring the right side of the offensive line after playing there during his rookie year in 2011.Dallas lost its previous starting right tackle Terence Steele to a season-ending knee injury last weekend. Meanwhile, Smith has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring tendon injury in August that has wiped out most of his 2022 campaign.Aside from Smith, veteran Jason Peters and Josh Ball could also be options to man the right side of Dallas' line. The Cowboys enter Sunday's matchup against the Jaguars riding a four-game win streak.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Steelers name Trubisky starting QB vs. Panthers
Mitch Trubisky will start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the team announced Saturday.Starting passer Kenny Pickett remains in concussion protocol after leaving last week's game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was ruled out of this weekend's matchup after initially being listed as doubtful on Friday. The 28-year-old Trubisky split first-team reps with Mason Rudolph during practice sessions leading up to the weekend. Rudolph will likely serve as the team's backup after spending most of the season inactive on game days.Trubisky began the 2022 campaign as the Steelers' starter through the first four games before being benched in favor of the rookie Pickett. Pittsburgh sports a 1-3 record with Trubisky starting under center. The 2018 Pro Bowler signed a two-year, $14.2-million contract with Pittsburgh as a free agent this offseason. The Chicago Bears selected Trubisky second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he spent four seasons in Chicago before joining the Buffalo Bills last season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos rule out Wilson for tilt vs. Cardinals
Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett announced Friday that quarterback Russell Wilson was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to team reporter Aric DiLalla. The veteran passer suffered a concussion during last week's 34-28 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Wilson has cleared concussion protocol, but Hackett said the organization decided to give him another week.Brett Rypien is expected to start in Wilson's place. The 26-year-old completed 4 of 8 attempts for 16 yards, a touchdown, and a pick after replacing Wilson last week.In Rypien's one other appearance this season, a spot start against the New York Jets in Week 7, he threw 46 times, completing 24 passes for 225 yards and an interception.Wilson has completed 60.4% of his passes while throwing for 2,805 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions through his first 12 games with the Broncos.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 15 player props: Wishing for the best 'over' the holidays
A 6-4 Sunday in the prop game in Week 14 could have been better. George Kittle got the early looks from Brock Purdy against the Buccaneers and was over his modest yardage total by halftime. We thought he'd get a screen pass, and he did, except it was sniffed out for a 5-yard loss, and Kittle's yardage went from over 30 yards to under 30 yards. Our quest to salvage a profitable season continues as we've crept back above .500.Jonathan Taylor over 81.5 rushing yardsThe Vikings' defense is bad. While those brutal metrics are mostly against the pass, that might manifest itself in longer Colts drives Saturday. Longer drives mean more opportunities for Jeff Saturday to give the ball to his best player - Jonathan Taylor. Twenty-plus carries in each of the last four games have led to 80-plus yards, so we'll bet on him to make it five in a row.Deshaun Watson over 216.5 passing yardsWhether it's an increase in comfort in his third game back or another series of dopey decisions by the coaching staff and teammates, Watson could be in a position to throw for more yards than the market expects. The Browns won't be able to run as easily against the Ravens as they'd like. Baltimore's given up just 3.8 yards per carry this season and a minuscule 2.8 yards per carry in their last three contests. The Browns shot themselves in the foot in Cincinnati, and it put them in a trailing game state, meaning Watson was forced to throw more than hoped.Stefon Diggs over 74.5 receiving yardsYou say there's snow; I say there are depressed offensive point and yardage totals in the betting markets. Diggs is the most reliable target for strong-armed Josh Allen, and he's also the Bills' best route-runner, which makes him particularly hard to cover if you're a Dolphins defensive back needing to start and stop with unsure footing.Justin Fields over 67.5 rushing yardsFields and the Bears' offense had a bye last week, and that's the only reason we didn't bet on him to hit the 70-yard mark with his legs. He's cleared that hurdle in six of his last seven games, and we'll keep betting it until somebody stops him.Sam Darnold over 13.5 rushing yards With T.J. Watt bearing down on me, I'd be quick to run for my life too. In his second game back last week, Darnold took off for a long rush and kept the opposition guessing occasionally on read-option carries. One or two of those keepers with Watt or another end crashing, and the deceptively mobile Darnold could get loose.Desmond Ridder over 24.5 rushing yardsRidder is just as mobile as Marcus Mariota, so the Falcons don't lose anything with their rookie quarterback in a dual-threat capacity. In fact, he likely has less of a grasp of the offense than the veteran incumbent, so an extra scramble may be in order when Atlanta draws up the rare drop-back pass. The Saints have allowed the seventh-most rushing yards per game to opposing quarterbacks at 24.23, and those QBs haven't all been as fleet as Ridder.Zonovan Knight anytime touchdown (+110)The undrafted rookie stepped in three weeks ago and has led the way for a Jets run game that's needed to fill the void left by fellow first-year Breece Hall. Knight has had 14, 15, and 17 carries, finally scoring a touchdown last week in Buffalo. Against a vulnerable Lions defense, the Jets should be able to move the ball, giving Knight at least one opportunity as the first option for a goal-line carry.Tom Brady over 275.5 passing yardsThe only reasonable way this doesn't go over is if the Buccaneers blow out the Bengals and Cincinnati has no offense. Why? Because as long as this is played in a neutral game state, the Bucs should find success throwing. With Trey Hendrickson out with a wrist injury, Tom Brady should have time to throw. With slot corner Mike Hilton also likely out, Brady's most reliable target, Chris Godwin, should have a big game as well.Derrick Henry over 13.5 receiving yardsThe expectation is that Henry feasts against the Chargers' league-worst run defense. However, as we saw (and successfully bet on) last week, when Ryan Tannehill starts, the Titans throw to Henry more this season than ever before. Henry went over easily with 34 yards on three receptions off of five targets.Isaiah Hodgins over 34.5 receiving yardsThree games ago, on Thanksgiving, we took a shot on Hodgins to score a touchdown at long odds. He did, but it was called back on a debatable ineligible player downfield penalty. Naturally, he's scored in each of the Giants' two contests since. Hodgins has also quietly gone over modest yardage totals in all three games where he's gotten at least 70% of the snaps, something he's in line for Sunday night.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Steelers' Pickett unlikely to play vs. Panthers
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett will be listed as doubtful ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Brian Batko.Tomlin added that Pickett was a "partial participant" in Friday's practice as the rookie passer remains in the league's concussion protocol.Pickett, who's posted a 4-5 record since earning the team's starting role, suffered his second concussion in eight weeks during last Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Pitt product has thrown for 1,797 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a 65% completion rate. He's also rushed for 225 yards and three scores. The Steelers are expected to name either Mitch Trubisky or Mason Rudolph the starter this weekend. The veteran signal-callers split first-team snaps during practice this week.Tomlin declined to name a starter Friday. "There's no need to land the plane until it's required to land the plane," he said. The Steelers (5-8) sit third in the AFC North.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Seahawks' Lockett to miss time after suffering hand injury on TNF
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett is expected to miss time after fracturing a bone in his hand during Thursday's 21-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Pete Carroll announced postgame.Lockett is undergoing surgery to repair and stabilize the finger, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Friday. Lockett reportedly could miss just one game, but a firm timetable should be available post-surgery.The 30-year-old entered Week 15 with a team-high 896 yards and eight touchdown catches on 71 receptions this season. He caught seven passes for 68 yards against the 49ers.Seattle dropped to 7-7 with Thursday's loss.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jerry Jones: Cowboys close to signing Beckham
The Dallas Cowboys are seemingly on the verge of signing free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after months of speculation about his next NFL destination."Odell's going to join us," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told USA Today Sports' Jarrett Bell. "There's a good chance he will, with the complete goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I'll look to the future. But most of it being about now."Jones added that the deal, which will be for the rest of the season, could become official after Dallas' game Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, and Kansas City Chiefs have been the other main contenders for the wideout's services.Beckham is coming off a torn ACL he suffered in last season's Super Bowl while playing for the Los Angeles Rams. The 30-year-old recently visited the Cowboys, but his chances of landing there took a hit after Dallas was reportedly concerned Beckham wouldn't be able to play until mid-January or potentially not until the 2023 campaign. The Cowboys brought in former Indianapolis Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton on Monday to bolster a group that also includes CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup. However, Jones is optimistic about Beckham's health."He's been working out," Jones said, "and of course he's extraordinary."After being cut by the Cleveland Browns midway through the 2021 campaign, Beckham returned to form with the Rams. He racked up 305 yards and five touchdowns in eight regular-season games and 288 yards and two scores in the postseason.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Week 15 best bets: Spread, moneyline, total, and teaser
You could feel it the second the punt got blocked. The Bills had allowed just one scoring drive to the Jets through three quarters and had a 20-7 lead. Ideally, Buffalo would have scored more, but expectations were limited in a bad-weather game against a good defense. Then the Jets blocked a Bills punt for a safety, and the calculations ensued. Astute bettors knew that an 11-point margin meant there was a decent chance New York would settle for a field goal to cut the lead to eight points, and a 3-0 week against the spread washed away in the rain. Still, we'll take a couple more units into the black overall.BET TYPELAST WEEKSEASON (units)ATS trio2-1 (+1)22-15-5 (+5.6)ML upset-16-8 (+3.2)Totals+15-9 (-4.9)Teasers+17-7 (-1.4)TOTAL+2+2.5Best bets ATSBills -7Mike McDaniel can wear all the T-shirts he wants, but the Dolphins aren't built for Buffalo's weather on Saturday night. Last Sunday, the Chargers clogged the middle of the field on Tua Tagovailoa, forcing him to throw outside. That didn't work indoors in L.A., so we shouldn't expect it to go well in a blizzard. The Bills' offense saw grim conditions last week and should have full focus to avenge Week 3, when they somehow lost in Miami despite out-gaining the Dolphins 497-212. Josh Allen makes the throws that Tagovailoa can't, and the Bills' defense forces turnovers in a comfortable win.Jets -2Cue the "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" music, but this is a tough spot for everyone's second-favorite team, the Lions. Their offense gets its toughest test when combining conditions and opponent this season. Jared Goff has historically struggled in the cold, so the team's efficiency was headed for a drop before even factoring in a Jets defense that's tied for first in yards per play allowed. With Mike White under center, the Jets' offense has looked friskier than Season 2 of "White Lotus," but it helped facing the Bears' and Vikings' defense. After a tough matchup at Buffalo, the Lions' defense is much closer to the lower echelon of Chicago and Minnesota. The "Mean Green" get the win and their playoff chances grow three sizes.Titans +3Are you familiar with the collective works of the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers? Historically, the NFL's most star-crossed franchise is roughly 0-for-infinity when it comes to following big wins with another victory. It's easy to get excited about the Chargers with a cavalry of injured starters reportedly on the way back, especially after a dominant performance by the pass defense last week on Sunday Night Football. This is a different game, though. L.A.'s awful run defense will be tested repeatedly by Derrick Henry, and I expect it to fail. Mike Vrabel outfoxes Brandon Staley, sending the Chargers back on the bubble, but in the event Justin Herbert saves the day, we'll take a field goal's worth of points.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Buccaneers +165An easy way to define value is via comparison to past point spreads, regardless of one game's result. Jets to start Wilson vs. Lions with White not cleared due to rib injury
New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson will return to the starting lineup Sunday against the Detroit Lions after team doctors did not clear Mike White for contact, head coach Robert Saleh announced Friday.White was hospitalized as a precaution after twice exiting last Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills with a rib injury. He was able to return to the game both times, and Saleh said Monday that the team was preparing for White to suit up in Week 15.Saleh said White was an "absolute warrior" who "exhausted every measure" to be able to play but that the team needed to protect him from himself.New York benched Wilson for White after the former No. 2 overall pick struggled in the first half of the season."This is going to be a great opportunity for Zach," said Saleh. "... We feel very comfortable about Zach's preparation as the first-string quarterback and that he's gotten his normal workload as a starting quarterback would normally get."The AFC East club elevated Wilson to the No. 2 job ahead of Joe Flacco on Wednesday.Wilson has thrown for 1,279 yards and four touchdowns against five interceptions in seven starts this year while completing just over 55% of his passes. He had similar struggles as a rookie, finishing with 2,334 yards and nine scores against 11 picks in 13 starts.White has thrown for 952 yards and three touchdowns against two interceptions in three appearances.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Shanahan: Purdy 'definitely the most poised rookie I've ever had'
Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has looked like a seasoned veteran to begin his NFL career, battling through rib and oblique injuries to help the San Francisco 49ers earn the NFC West crown with a Thursday night win over the Seattle Seahawks.49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan praised Purdy for his toughness after the game, saying the team wasn't even sure the passer would be able to play after listing him as questionable."He's definitely the most poised rookie I've ever had. He's been like that since he's gotten here," Shanahan said, according to Grant Gordon of NFL.com. "He was poised all week, even with him being unsure of whether he'd be able to go or not."And under the circumstances, we didn't have any other choices, we were going to see how long he could last, and we were ready to go with (backup) Josh (Johnson). But he just got comfortable, he got better as the game went, and it was pretty unbelievable."Purdy, the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, showed little sign of his injuries against Seattle, completing 17 of 26 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns.
