Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Mike Pennel has been suspended for the first two games of the 2020 regular season. The move was listed on the league's official transaction wire, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Pennel tweeted an apology for his suspension and suggested it was for the use of a banned substance.
Let's start by giving credit where it's due: Ex-NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho's two-part interview with league commissioner Roger Goodell, the latest installment in Acho's "Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man" series, had every good intention.
The Detroit Lions canceled their Tuesday practice in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.Players and members of the coaching staff addressed the media collectively outside the team's facility. The Lions displayed the words "The world can't go on" and "We won't be silent" painted across whiteboards.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones denied the report that his team won't make a push for free-agent safety Earl Thomas.Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday that the Cowboys aren't expected to pursue Thomas, even after recently making inquiries. But Jones said he's the only one who knows the organization's interests."He doesn't know what he's talking about. The only one who knows that is me," Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.Jones added that the Cowboys are still weighing the possibility of adding Thomas, according to ESPN's Field Yates. The Baltimore Ravens released Thomas on Sunday, and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Cowboys were considered leading contenders to sign the defender. The Ravens cut Thomas for "personal conduct that has adversely affected" the organization following his altercation with a teammate during practice. The 31-year-old called the incident a "mental error."Dallas has been linked to Thomas since his contract dispute that resulted in him leaving the Seattle Seahawks after the 2018 season. The Texas native and Longhorns alum has previously asked the Cowboys to "come get me."

Another high-profile safety is available for teams looking to bolster their secondary ahead of the 2020 season. The New York Jets dealt Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks last month after granting his trade request, and now the Baltimore Ravens have released star safety Earl Thomas following an altercation with a teammate during practice.Thomas' release marks the second time he is leaving a franchise on a sour note. However, there's no debate about whether he can be an ideal short-term impact player for teams needing a defensive upgrade. With this in mind, here are five teams that might be a good fit for the former All-Pro defensive back.Dallas CowboysThe Cowboys are reportedly considered the leading contender to land Thomas - and it's not hard to understand why.Dallas' secondary is arguably their biggest weakness after this offseason, and they're especially suffering at cornerback after Byron Jones' departure. Thomas' versatility could provide a mouth-watering asset to a team that allowed a 65% completion rate to opposing quarterbacks with a league-low seven interceptions last season.Thomas received the highest grade while in coverage last season (minimum of 10 games), according to PFF.Additionally, the Texas native and Longhorns alum has previously mentioned he would enjoy playing for the Cowboys.Jerry Jones wasn't counting on a seven-time Pro Bowl safety becoming available with the regular season just around the corner. Landing in Dallas would make Thomas' old wish a reality and give Jones a chance to set up a star defensive unit with the same potential as the Cowboys' top-tier offense.
The NFL is investigating a number of positive COVID-19 tests from its teams using a single laboratory in New Jersey, the league announced Sunday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN."Saturday's daily COVID testing returned several positives tests from each of the clubs serviced by the same laboratory in New Jersey," the NFL said in a statement. "We are working with our testing partner, BioReference, to investigate these results, while the clubs work to confirm or rule out the positive tests."Clubs are taking immediate precautionary measures as outlined in the NFL-NFLPA's health and safety protocols to include contact tracing, isolation of individuals, and temporarily adjusting the schedule, where appropriate. The other laboratories used for NFL testing have not had similar results."The Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, and Green Bay Packers are some of the known teams affected with presumptive positive tests by Saturday's irregular COVID-19 results.
The Baltimore Ravens have released safety Earl Thomas, the team announced Sunday. The Ravens explained their decision is based on Thomas' "personal conduct that has adversely affected" the organization. Baltimore is cutting the veteran defender after the team sent him home for an altercation with teammate Chuck Clark during practice Friday.Thomas signed a four-year, $55-million deal with the Ravens in 2019 and was set to earn $15 million this season, including a fully guaranteed $10-million base salary that becomes null if he's suspended for detrimental conduct to the team.Thomas thanked the Ravens after learning of his release."I appreciate the Ravens organization for the opportunity," Thomas said on Instagram. "Had a great run ... Wish things would have ended different but you live and you learn. Thank you (general manager) Eric DeCosta and everyone else who played a role in bringing me to B-more. Wish you guys the best." The Dallas Cowboys are the leading contender to land Thomas, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old, who missed practice Saturday and Sunday, shared on Instagram a video of the play that led to the altercation and reflected on the incident - though he later deleted the post. He called the incident "a mental error."Thomas and Clark reportedly engaged in a "heated confrontation" during practice, starting with a sideline argument, before multiple flare-ups prompted teammates to intervene.Thomas joined the Ravens as a free agent last year after a decorated nine-season tenure with the Seattle Seahawks. The seven-time Pro Bowler racked up 49 tackles, two interceptions, and two sacks through 15 games in his first season with Baltimore.Selected 14th overall out of Texas in 2010, Thomas was a pivotal part of the Seahawks' Legion of Boom that helped the team win its first Super Bowl six years ago.Head coach John Harbaugh confirmed DeShon Elliott will replace Thomas.
