Belichick 'absolutely' still enjoys coaching Patriots
The New England Patriots' recent struggles don't appear to be weighing too heavily on head coach Bill Belichick.Following the Patriots' 10-7 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, Belichick said he "absolutely" enjoys coaching the team now as much as he did in years past."Every week's a challenge, and I'm excited about the challenge, the opportunity, and what we have to do to win each week," he said. "I'll keep working as hard as I can to help our team."The Patriots fell to 2-9 on the season with Sunday's loss, which was their fourth in a row. They own the worst record in the AFC and the third worst in the league behind the 2-10 Arizona Cardinals and 1-10 Carolina Panthers.During an appearance on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show" on Monday, Belichick also shut down reports suggesting he'll move on from the Patriots after this season and that he's already decided on his next destination."Yeah, that's ridiculous," the 71-year-old said.He added, "I don't worry about what everybody else is saying. I've heard good, I've heard bad. I don't really care."Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
MNF best bets: Entertaining QBs get spotlight in Bears-Vikings
It's a bit of a comedown from last Monday's Super Bowl LVII rematch, but a quarterback matchup whose narrative could have involved Kirk Cousins' record in prime time and Tyson Bagent's Cinderella story instead features a pair of exciting options in Joshua Dobbs and Justin Fields.Bears @ Vikings (-3, 44.5)For the second straight week, money has come on the underdog in the week leading up to Monday Night Football. The Vikings opened as 3.5-point favorites, but the line has dropped to the key number of -3.For those who follow NFL power ratings and use the formula to create point spreads off of that, you could calculate why the initial line was likely too high, but it's even simpler when you compare the Vikings to the Lions. The Bears closed +7.5 at Detroit last week and opened +3.5 at Minnesota this week. Is the difference between the Lions and Vikings only four points?Of course, crossing the key numbers of -7, -6, and -3 represents a more significant leap than just a handful of points. Oddsmakers will also be loath to shift the line under -3 at the risk of the game landing on Vikings by three and paying out Bears +3.5 and Vikings -2.5.Why has the betting market shown interest in the Bears?Regular-season win-total markets projected the Bears to win 7.5 games. Fields' dynamism, the addition of a big-play receiver in D.J. Moore, and an improved defense were expected to put the Bears just under .500. You can blame their 3-8 record on Fields' injury, but if it wasn't for two massive fourth-quarter chokes (versus Denver and Detroit), they would be 5-6. The point is that the current version of the Bears probably fits their 45/100 rating before the season.Meanwhile, the Vikings' defense is widely known to blitz the most frequently in the league. However, that works best against relatively immobile pocket passers who are asked to consistently read defenses and react. Last week, the Bears showed they're willing to use Fields' legs again, as he took off 18 times. In their first meeting, Fields ran eight times for 46 yards before he was injured on the first drive of the second half. The simplicity of what the Bears do with Fields actually makes the Vikings' defensive complexity less effective.Lastly, although the Dobbs story is surprisingly fun, this is the first time in his career that he's been asked to win a game by a prescribed margin. He's never been the favorite before. Dobbs has a rushing touchdown in five straight games, but only the Patriots and Panthers have given up fewer yards per game to opposing quarterbacks than the Bears, and Chicago hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown to a quarterback this season.Pick: Bears (+3)Joshua Dobbs: Under 232.5 passing yardsDobbs has thrown for more than 232 yards twice in his career. Against the Saints, he took advantage of their blissful ignorance of T.J. Hockenson, and they allowed one of the easiest options for a new quarterback to tear them up in the first half. Since halftime of that game, however, Hockenson has five catches for 61 yards. The improved Bears defense allowed only 5.6 yards per pass attempt in the last three games, which is top 10 in that time frame and would be third in the league for a full season.Justin Fields: Anytime touchdown (+210)If Fields has a similar volume of rushing attempts to last week, there are just too many ways that he could find himself in the end zone. Fields can score from a distance after eluding a blitz, on a designed rush in the red zone, or via a quarterback sneak at the goal line. He only has one touchdown this season, which is why his scoring is available at better than +200. After eight touchdowns last season, this version of Fields is more likely to score than the implied probability of 33%.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Bills' Lawson confronts, appears to shove fan during loss to Eagles
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson confronted Eagles fans and appeared to shove one of them in the waning moments of Buffalo's loss to Philadelphia on Sunday night.Lawson, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and other Bills players walked from the sideline toward the front row of stands at Lincoln Financial Field and started jawing at Eagles fans. Phillips got close to the face of one fan before Lawson walked up and seemingly made physical contact with the spectator, according to video circulating on social media.Security eventually intervened and the fan continued to shout toward the Buffalo players. Defensive end Leonard Floyd tried to defuse the situation and walked the players back to the sideline. The Bills did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Sunday night. The Eagles beat the Bills 37-34 in overtime.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLCopyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lamar makes fun of Flowers for bouquet celebration: 'That was ass'
Zay Flowers produced two touchdowns to help the Baltimore Ravens beat the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night, but not everything the receiver did in prime time impressed Lamar Jackson.Flowers mimed throwing a bouquet after catching a three-yard score from Jackson, which the quarterback called "the worst celebration I've ever seen.""That was ass," joked Jackson after the 20-10 victory that kept Baltimore as the AFC's No. 1 seed.
Garrett among key Browns injured in loss to Broncos
Three key Cleveland Browns left Sunday's 29-12 loss to the Denver Broncos with injuries.Edge rusher Myles Garrett - this season's front-runner for Defensive Player of the Year - suffered a shoulder injury and was seen wearing a sling after the contest.Garrett said postgame that he heard a pop in his left shoulder, according to Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram. He's expected to have an MRI on Monday."I've played through things that should've sidelined me before," added Garrett, who entered Week 12 with an NFL-high 13 sacks. "And I'm going to continue to fight and do what's best for the team and for myself. ... Nothing like this is going to hold us back or me back."Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson also left the contest in the second half due to a concussion, while top receiver Amari Cooper exited with a rib injury.Thompson-Robinson sustained the injury in the third quarter after taking a hard hit from linebacker Baron Browning, who was called for roughing the passer on the play. P.J. Walker entered the game at QB with Cleveland trailing 17-12. Thompson-Robinson spent time in the medical tent before walking to the locker room early in the fourth quarter to be evaluated for a head injury.
Mayfield: Bucs won't fix issues 'until everybody gets pissed off enough'
Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield expressed his frustration with the team's season following Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts that dropped Tampa Bay to 4-7."Until everybody gets pissed off enough to get it fixed, there will be no changes," Mayfield said postgame, per Jenna Laine of ESPN. "I know where I'm gonna head at the end of this week. I'll get my job fixed and try to drag as many people along as well."The Bucs started the 2023 season with a 3-1 record but have since lost six of their last seven games, including their last two. Tampa Bay opened the scoring with a first-quarter field goal versus Indianapolis but wasn't able to do much in the following drives as the Colts scored 17 unanswered points. Indianapolis didn't trail again in the contest.Mayfield finished the day with 20 completions on 30 attempts for 199 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. He was also sacked six times."One game back in the division, so our goals are still in front of us," Mayfield added. "But it's frustrating to not win these games and to continue to hurt ourselves."Mayfield, 28, joined Tampa Bay on a one-year contract this past offseason. He completed 64.6% of his passes while posting a 91.5 passer rating entering the Colts matchup. The former No. 1 pick suffered an ankle injury early versus Indianapolis. He briefly left the game but was able to return and finish the contest."Didn't feel very good. ... It'll be pretty sore tomorrow," Mayfield said of his ailment, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. He's set to have an MRI on Monday, per Laine. The Atlanta Falcons, who defeated the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, currently lead the NFC South with a 5-6 record.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Hurts leads Eagles to epic OT win over Bills in heavyweight clash
Jalen Hurts scored a 12-yard touchdown run in overtime to help the Philadelphia Eagles edge the Buffalo Bills 37-34 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. The game-winning score in the extra frame capped yet another clutch performance for Hurts, who accounted for five touchdowns versus Buffalo.
Giants' Daboll: Not feuding with Martindale
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll refuted a report that he's feuding with Wink Martindale."The biggest argument Wink and I have had is who gets the last piece of pizza," Daboll said following the Giants' 10-7 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, according to NYDN's Pat Leonard.A report before the contest indicated tensions between Daboll and Martindale had risen and the pair could agree to part ways before the season ends. However, Daboll said postgame he has a lot of respect for the coordinator, adding that Martindale "did a fabulous job of scheming it up" versus the Patriots, per Leonard.Daboll even presented Martindale with a game ball for the win.
Saints' Olave exits loss vs. Falcons with concussion
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave left the team's 24-15 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday with a concussion. The wideout leapt while attempting to make a sideline grab in the second half before falling hard on his back. Before he was ruled out, Olave hauled in seven receptions for 114 yards, his highest total of the season. The 23-year-old entered Sunday's matchup with 657 yards and three touchdowns on 56 catches.New Orleans is already shorthanded at wide receiver. Rashid Shaheed exited the contest with a thigh injury. Eagles without Lane Johnson vs. Bills due to groin injury
Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson is inactive for Sunday's matchup against the Buffalo Bills due to a groin injury, the team announced.Johnson appeared on the injury report earlier Sunday after he informed team trainers that he was suffering from groin soreness, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The veteran received treatment for the injury before the game and is slated to undergo an MRI, Rapoport added. He fully participated in training during the week. This will mark the first game Johnson has missed all season.Jack Driscoll will likely start in Johnson's place. Patriots start Jones over Zappe vs. Giants
The New England Patriots didn't make a change at quarterback for Week 12 after all.New England started quarterback Mac Jones on Sunday against the New York Giants.Coming off a bye, Bill Belichick declined to name a starter this past week after Jones struggled in a Week 10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Jones has started every game this season but has been benched for Bailey Zappe three times. The two passers split first-team reps in practice this week.Jones, a first-round pick in 2021, had a strong rookie campaign but hasn't replicated that success lately. The Alabama product has completed 65.4% of his passes while tossing 10 touchdowns against 10 interceptions across 10 starts in 2023. His 80.2 passer rating ranks 26th in the NFL.Zappe is in his second season with New England after being drafted in the fourth round in 2022. He started two games in Year 1 while replacing an injured Jones. The 2-8 Patriots have lost three in a row. The 3-8 Giants will start quarterback Tommy DeVito, an undrafted rookie who started New York's last two games. He began the campaign as the team's third-string QB, but starter Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor are dealing with injuries.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Relationship between Giants' Daboll, Martindale deteriorating
Tensions are rising between New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Don Martindale, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer. The pair could agree to mutually part ways before the end of the season, Glazer adds.Daboll, 48, joined the Giants last year after spending 2018-21 as the Buffalo Bills' offensive coordinator. He led the team to a 9-7-1 record and won Coach of the Year in his first campaign with the club.Martindale, 60, arrived in New York alongside Daboll after he coached with the Baltimore Ravens from 2012-21.The team has struggled to replicate last season's success in 2023, stumbling to a 3-8 record and a minus-136 point differential. The team ranks in the bottom five of offensive and defensive yards, as well as in offensive and defensive points per game. It's unclear who'd take over the defense if Daboll and Martindale part ways during the season.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Steelers' Johnson, Fitzpatrick involved in heated argument
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick got into a heated dispute in the locker room following last Sunday's loss to the Cleveland Browns, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Defensive veterans Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt broke up the argument and told the team it needed to remain united, Schefter adds.Johnson visibly showed his frustration throughout last Sunday's contest. However, he started "chirping" the Steelers' coaches postgame as they went into the locker room, a source told ESPN. Johnson's antics reportedly drew Fitzpatrick's attention and led to the argument.Johnson was also caught having an animated discussion with head coach Mike Tomlin on the sideline during the loss. The 27-year-old said earlier this week that he was a "little bit" frustrated last Sunday but that it's "nothing to make a big deal of," according to Joe Rutter of Trib Live.Tomlin joined Watt and Heyward in talking to the team following the argument, per Schefter.Johnson was targeted eight times in the 13-10 loss but recorded only two catches as he and quarterback Kenny Pickett struggled to get on the same page.Sunday's issues on offense culminated in Pittsburgh firing offensive coordinator Matt Canada earlier this week. Canada's offense had been outgained by opponents in each of the team's 10 games while it was held to one touchdown or less in half of its matchups this season. The Steelers (6-4) will attempt to steer their offense in the right direction Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals (5-5). Running backs coach Eddie Faulkner is serving as the interim offensive coordinator while quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan will be tasked with play calling.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 12 player props: Searching for stars to back or fade on Sunday
We traded 5-5 weeks for rotating highs and lows in our Sunday add-on player props. Falling one catch shy with Trey McBride and one yard short with A.J. Dillon was the difference in Week 10's 8-3 record and a 3-7 Week 11.Calvin Ridley: Over 60.5 receiving yardsThe Texans' pass defense is comparable to those of the Titans and Steelers - two teams who had no answer for Trevor Lawrence and Calvin Ridley. The Jaguars' offense stalls when Lawrence feels consistent pressure, but Houston's below-average pressure rate doesn't bode well for the home team, and Ridley's an explosive player who can take advantage.Chuba Hubbard: Under 45.5 rushing yardsMiles Sanders' snap share is creeping back up. He was on the field almost as much as Chuba Hubbard last week. Plus, the way to beat the Titans is to throw the ball against a thin secondary. Even in the Jags' wire-to-wire win over Tennessee last week, Travis Etienne was held to 52 yards by a top-10 run defense. If Hubbard doesn't get double-digit carries, he's unlikely to top this prescribed total.Saquon Barkley: Under 70.5 rushing yardsWho knows what the Patriots will do on offense. No matter the organization's motivation for winning or losing off the field, what New England does well on the field is stop the run. No team has allowed fewer rushing yards per game, and that's despite having faced Jonathan Taylor, Josh Jacobs, Alvin Kamara, Raheem Mostert, and the Eagles' group of runners. Look for Saquon Barkley to make hay in the passing game to help Tommy DeVito.Bijan Robinson: Over 18.5 receiving yardsBaby steps. Arthur Smith finally got around to using Bijan Robinson in Arizona. Now, after a bye week, and with Desmond Ridder back under center, maybe he's ready to make him a factor in the passing game again. In the six games Ridder finished with Robinson healthy, the tailback caught 26 passes for 179 yards. Four catches for 30 yards should be the expectation on Sunday.Ja'Marr Chase: Over 65.5 receiving yardsI want to buy low on Jake Browning, a long-time backup with a ton of college experience at a top program. Instead of taking the over for Browning's yardage, let's trust his top target. Ja'Marr Chase is lined 20 yards shorter than he would be if Joe Burrow was throwing the ball. The Steelers' pass defense has enough holes that Browning can repeatedly look to Chase to make a play.Mike Evans: Anytime touchdown (+150 or better) We don't use anytime touchdowns in this space very often, but Mike Evans has now scored in seven of 10 games this season, and there's nothing about the Colts' secondary that suggests he's not at least 50/50 to find the end zone in what could be a high-scoring game.Dorian Thompson-Robinson: Under 171.5 passing yardsI didn't see Dorian Thompson-Robinson throwing 43 times last week. If you told me that was the game plan against Pittsburgh - which makes me feel better about the Bengals' offense this week - I would have thought DTR would throw for more than 165 yards. That was all he could muster with that volume, and that usage won't work in Denver, so we'll bet he throws less for no more than last week's yardage total.Matthew Stafford: Under 33.5 pass attemptsIn their first meeting, it took half the game for the Rams to figure out that they could run on the Cardinals. With Kyren Williams back and Royce Freeman proving reliable, both should get a chance right from the start this time around, and success on their end should limit how many throws Matthew Stafford needs to make.Josh Allen: Over 258.5 passing yardsTaking Stefon Diggs is tempting here since his yardage total is depressed after tough matchups with opposing cornerbacks. But let's look for Josh Allen to connect with Diggs while also spreading it around to Dalton Kincaid, Khalil Shakir, Gabe Davis, and James Cook out of the backfield in a game where the Bills should find themselves in a shootout.Keaton Mitchell: Over 14.5 longest rushKeaton Mitchell's played in three games and had carries for 60, 39, and 21 yards. The Chargers' defensive metrics aren't bad against the run, but expecting Los Angeles to be on point for every one of the Ravens' misdirection run plays is probably a losing bet. Mitchell will use his speed and elusiveness to create a big run in a fourth straight game.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Dolphins' Phillips suffers torn Achilles in win over Jets
Miami Dolphins pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips suffered a torn Achilles in Friday's win over the New York Jets, head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Saturday, according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe.Additionally, McDaniel noted that left tackle Terron Armstead is week-to-week with a quad injury.Phillips sustained the injury while attempting to rush the quarterback on a fourth-quarter play and needed to be carted off the field.
The Ravens' unique set of strengths makes them a contender to fear
An emphatic win over a division rival last week showcased everything the Ravens do well. They topped the Bengals 34-20 by passing and rushing for big yardage. Gus Edwards capped multiple long scoring marches with short touchdown runs. Odell Beckham Jr. (116 receiving yards) and Nelson Agholor (37-yard TD grab punctuated with a somersault) flicked a switch under the Thursday night lights.
Jets make Lazard healthy scratch for Black Friday game vs. Dolphins
New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard was a healthy scratch for Friday's 34-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins.Head coach Robert Saleh said postgame that it was his decision to sit Lazard."There's things that we all need to get better at, including him," Saleh told reporters, including CBS Sports' Josina Anderson. He said that parts of the veteran wideout's game "need to get better.""I don't think he's played up to his standard," Saleh added.Lazard signed a four-year, $44-million deal with the Jets this offseason after spending the first five years of his career with the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The 6-foot-5 wideout has struggled to produce while Rodgers has been sidelined due to an Achilles tear, catching just 20 passes for 290 yards and one touchdown this year. The Jets got a look at some of their other receiving options on Friday, including Jason Brownlee and Xavier Gipson.Lazard had played at least 77% of the team's offensive snaps in every game before playing 65% in last week's 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He finished that contest with one target and no receptions. The New York offense, and particularly its passing game, has been inefficient all season. The club ranks No. 30 in total yards per game (270.3), passing yards per contest (170.5), and scoring offense (15 PPG).Quarterback Zach Wilson was also inactive after being benched for veteran Tim Boyle.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. He also has the sixth-most sacks in the league through 11 games.Interim head coach Antonio Pierce was optimistic that Crosby could be available against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs."We'll see how Maxx is today," Pierce said prior to practice Friday, according to team reporter Rachel Gossen. "Getting treatment around the clock, you know how it goes. NFL Week 12 best bets: Sifting through Sunday leftovers
Last week, we wondered - and made bets around - who might be able to stay hot. The answer? Us.We were a Broncos two-point conversion away from sweeping the entire board. With that kind of pressure on Denver, it was no wonder they ran the least-inspired conversion play imaginable. Alas, we'll be content with above 60% ATS on the season while nearing profitability on upsets and teasers.Best bets ATSWe've already discussed the five underdogs (one being the Seahawks who lost on Thursday night) with a shot to win outright relative to their price, and as always, they're worth a look against the spread.TEAMSPREADBills+3.5Raiders+9Giants+3.5Bears+3.5However, there are more plays worth making this week.Jaguars @ Texans (+1.5, 47.5)A 37-17 Texans win in their first meeting looks ugly for Jacksonville, but the Jaguars actually outgained Houston in Week 3. After a surprise start had the Texans up 17-0, the Jags were on the comeback trail in the third quarter, only to suffer a fluke kick-return touchdown that put the lead back to 14.Trevor Lawrence shouldn't have the issues he's had against teams with a good pass rush. The Texans get pressure at a below-average rate and are unable to effectively blitz with any frequency. If the Jaguars are going to be contenders, they should be better than the teams C.J. Stroud has faced during a stretch in which his stock couldn't be higher. Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, and Arizona are 26th or worse in opponent yards per pass attempt.Pick: Jaguars (-2)Panthers @ Titans (-3.5, 36.5)The Titans are one of only two teams to be sent on the road for three straight games this season. The Giants were able to overcome those circumstances and get a win last week, but they were playing the Commanders. Tennessee, meanwhile, had to take on a fresher, motivated playoff-calibre team in Jacksonville. The market will frequently sour on a team after three straight road losses, but if that's what's making this line closer to a field goal than a touchdown against the 1-9 Panthers, I'm all for it.Carolina scored more than 15 points in the two games Bryce Young started this season, and both contests featured late scenarios in which the game was already out of hand. So, while the Titans' pass defense isn't good, the Panthers aren't the team to exploit it.Little has changed personnel-wise from when the Titans last played at home - a convincing win over the Falcons - and this looks to be the last chance we'll get to fade the Panthers on the road with a point spread this short.Pick: Titans (-3.5)Browns @ Broncos (-1.5, 36.5)The Broncos' defense is creating turnovers (12 in the last three games), and a fifth straight win would put Sean Payton and Co. directly into the playoff mix. It's the type of midseason turnaround that would garner attention for Coach of the Year (available at +5000).Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw 43 times for a measly 165 yards last week and now goes on the road to take on defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who should have the rookie under pressure. We're getting the better quarterback, coach, and home-field advantage in a game lined under a field goal, meaning we only have to pay a little extra so it doesn't come down to a two-point conversion.Pick: Broncos moneyline (-120)Ravens @ Chargers (+3.5, 48.5)The way to play the Chargers is to ask them not to win a game against quality competition, but to come painfully close. The Ravens are comparable to the Dolphins, Lions, and Cowboys, all teams that went to Los Angeles and won by the skin of their teeth. That fits with the Chargers' 64% cover rate in games where they've gotten more than a field goal since 2015.The Chargers' loss to the Packers became more excusable after Green Bay's win in Detroit. It was also preventable and included a series of wide-open drops, including a pair of uncharacteristic ones from Keenan Allen. With California rays not an issue at SoFi Stadium and Mark Andrews' absence hurting Baltimore's offensive efficiency, the Chargers should provide the usual drama in a close game.Pick: Chargers (+3.5)Moneyline upset of the weekBills (+145) over EaglesThe Bills' new play-caller, Joe Brady, was the next big thing after his time at LSU. Beating the Jets isn't particularly impressive, but almost 400 yards, 22 first downs, and 32 points against New York's defense in his first game with the call sheet is noteworthy. Plus, Brady should have better access to Josh Allen's best weapon this week since Stefon Diggs doesn't have to deal with Sauce Gardner or Pat Surtain. The Bills' defense remains shallow, but Jalen Hurts still isn't moving well and looked to be missing Dallas Goedert on Monday night. If the Eagles' offense can't take full advantage of Buffalo's lack of depth, a rare chance to bet the Bills as 'dogs might pay off.Best 6-point teaserBengals +8.5 / Buccaneers +8.5 (-130)There's more uncertainty than we'd like in the Steelers-Bengals matchup, but with a few extra days of prep, Jake Browning could run a basic version of Cincinnati's offense. At Pittsburgh -2.5, the market has stretched this point spread to where the Bengals can be teased up over a possession. That's asking a lot of a Steelers offense going through a play-caller change, even if that change is for the better. We'll pair that with the Buccaneers and Colts, who I have rated equally and profile similarly, playing in a controlled indoor environment, which should result in a tight game in Indianapolis.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Eagles waive former 1st-rounder Barnett
The Philadelphia Eagles waived former first-round pick Derek Barnett on Friday, the team announced. The defensive end is expected to draw interest and should land with a new team soon, adds Schefter.A team claiming Barnett will owe him under $500,000 for the remainder of the season, according to ESPN's Field Yates. The Eagles drafted Barnett with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The 27-year-old was a key piece of Philadelphia's defense from 2019-21, starting 39 games and racking up 14 sacks and 110 total tackles. He also famously recovered Brandon Graham's forced fumble in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LII to help the Eagles beat the New England Patriots.Barnett suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 1 of last year. With his role likely to be reduced in 2023, he requested a trade in August but ultimately stayed in Philadelphia. The pass-rusher, who doesn't have a sack in eight games this season, didn't play in Monday's win over the Kansas City Chiefs after being ruled out for personal reasons. The Eagles will continue to rely on a pass-rushing group of Graham, Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, and first-round rookie Nolan Smith.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp will play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals despite suffering an ankle sprain in Week 11, head coach Sean McVay announced Friday, according to Sarah Barshop of ESPN.Kupp limped off during the second quarter of a win over the Seattle Seahawks and was unable to return. The All-Pro wideout missed the first four games of the season due to a hamstring injury and sat out the final eight contests of 2022 with an ankle ailment.Kupp has caught 24 passes for 375 yards and one touchdown in six appearances this season. The 30-year-old will lead L.A.'s receiving group alongside rookie sensation Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell as the team tries to stay in the NFC playoff race. The Rams sit at 4-6, and a win over the Cardinals would put them one game behind the No. 7 seed Seahawks.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dolphins' Achane inactive vs. Jets due to knee injury
Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane is inactive for the first-ever Black Friday game against the New York Jets due to a knee injury, the team announced.Achane returned from injured reserve in Week 11 but re-aggravated his injury after only two touches and was listed as questionable for the AFC East matchup. The rookie had been out since Week 5 following an electric start to his NFL career that included 455 rushing yards and seven total touchdowns. The 7-3 Dolphins will continue to rely on a backfield of Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, and Darrynton Evans as they look to extend their lead atop the division.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns' Ward ruled out vs. Broncos
Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward won't suit up against the Denver Broncos on Sunday due to a shoulder injury, reports Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot.Ward did not participate in this week's practices due to the ailment. Head coach Kevin Stefanski was noncommittal about whether the two-time Pro Bowler would be sidelined for an extended period of time, per Cabot.Greg Newsome, Martin Emerson, and Mike Ford are in line to operate as the team's top three corners against a Broncos team that's won four games in a row. Both Newsome (calf) and Ford (thumb, ribs) are on the injury report. The former has been a limited participant in practice, while the latter has ramped up from limited to full participation. The Browns rank first in yards allowed per contest (243.3) and sixth in points surrendered per game (18). Opposing quarterbacks have completed just 48.1% of their throws against Ward for 280 yards and one touchdown this season, according to PFR.Ward has 29 total tackles, two interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and a forced fumble this year.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Washington Commanders fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer, the team announced Friday. The Commanders rank 29th in yards allowed per game (377.7) and 32nd in points surrendered per contest (29.2) after the team's 45-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving.Head coach Ron Rivera said he'll focus on the defensive side of the ball moving forward and won't have much time for the offense, according to The Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala.Rivera also stated that Cristian Garcia will take over for Vieselmeyer and that Richard Rodgers will remain the team's safeties coach and a senior defensive assistant, per Jhabvala.Owner Josh Harris, who officially purchased the club in July, released a statement saying he's "disappointed and frustrated" with the team's performance this year. Goodell: Kelce-Swift romance is 'great for the league'
Roger Goodell is happy to have more eyes on the NFL amid the newfound romance between Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pop star Taylor Swift. The NFL commissioner shared his thoughts on the Kelce-Swift relationship Wednesday during an appearance on "CBS Mornings," saying the league has welcomed the added attention it's been getting lately."Listen, they're happy. They seem to be enjoying their relationship - that's great in and of itself," Goodell said. "But it has connected more fans of Taylor's and more fans of the NFL in some ways. To see that they have a connection, now they have a connection to our game and to Taylor. She's an unbelievable artist, obviously Travis is an unbelievable player. I think it's great for the league to have that kind of attention, so we welcome it."Swift has been attendance for several Chiefs games this season, leading to a big spike in viewership. The Chiefs' Week 4 win over the New York Jets alone averaged around 27 million viewers, including a large percentage of teen girls and women, according to NBC Sports. The Chiefs will face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday without Swift in attendance, as she has a concert scheduled that night in Sao Paulo, Brazil.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys' Bland sets NFL record with 5th pick-6 in win over Commanders
Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland made history on Thursday by scoring his fifth pick-6 of the season in the fourth quarter of Dallas' Thanksgiving game against the Washington Commanders.Bland set the record with a 63-yard pick and return off Sam Howell to extend his team's late lead and help Dallas claim a 45-10 victory in Week 12. He also finished the game with 10 tackles and a pass breakup.
Not with a bang but a whimper: Is this how it ends for Bill Belichick?
The indignities are piling up for the New England Patriots.Mac Jones was benched for the final minutes of their latest loss after throwing a comically inept red-zone interception against the Indianapolis Colts. Their bye week featured chatter about whether head coach Bill Belichick would be fired from what once seemed the most secure job in sports. Tom Brady says it's hard to watch his former team now, sounding very much like someone talking about an aging dog that limps around the house and sometimes makes messes on the carpet. With the 2-8 Patriots heading into a showdown, so to speak, with the 3-8 New York Giants, the talk among the fan base isn't about whether Jones or Bailey Zappe at quarterback gives them the best chance to win. It's about which QB gives New England the best shot at losing in what promises to be a tight race for the first overall draft pick next spring. And even though the poor form has been going on for a while now since Brady left, it still seems baffling that Belichick is in charge of all this. The greatest NFL coach of all time by some distance - with six Super Bowls and 17 division titles in an era of league-enforced parity - has piloted a slow-motion train wreck, turning an unimpeachable legacy into one that's just a little bit impeachable. Instead of a smooth glide toward the all-time coaching wins record and eventual retirement, the question is whether Belichick will follow Brady in having an awkward breakup with the Patriots - and whether another franchise would give him a chance to get the 29 wins he needs to pass Don Shula for most regular-season victories. That these things are even being considered is a sign of how much things have changed. The denouement of the Brady-Belichick era in New England didn't exactly end in hugs and kisses, but it was evident that Pats owner Robert Kraft decided he would rather leave his franchise in the hands of a coach/GM in his late 60s than a quarterback in his early 40s.It seemed an obvious call. As much as fitness nut Brady had defied concepts like "aging" and "the passage of time," Belichick had seen off countless assistant coaches, personnel managers, and players yet kept piling up wins and playoff appearances. Whatever his roster looked like, Belichick would win between 11 and 14 games, make at least the conference championship game, and refuse to answer most press conference questions unless it was about some random Navy graduate on the practice squad. One of the more remarkable statistics of his time in New England is that the franchise's career receiving and rushing leaders remain players from before Belichick's time. (Stanley Morgan and Sam Cunningham, respectively). He just kept churning through guys with no notable drop-off in results - until now.One off-year post-Brady was no surprise, and Belichick seemed to have righted things quickly by drafting Jones out of Alabama and returning to the playoffs in 2021. To non-Pats fans, there was the grim possibility that Belichick was about to go on another endless run of success after just one measly down year.Except his team has regressed mightily since then as Belichick followed strange draft choices with odd coaching decisions and weird management techniques. For a time, it was fair to wonder if Belichick was doing super-genius stuff that the rest of us mortals couldn't understand, but that time has passed. Hiring defensive coaches to run the offense? Giving your young quarterback a distinct lack of receiving weapons? Drafting a third-round guard in the first round? Not quite super-genius stuff. It turns out that the new market inefficiency isn't having worse players than the other teams. X.com (formerly Twitter)Where it goes from here is intriguing. The Pats will face the Giants and Tommy DeVito on Sunday. Normally, you would expect a Belichick team to beat an undrafted rookie quarterback who still lives with his parents by about 78 points, give or take a touchdown. But even coming off a bye, the Patriots are only modest favorites. A loss would have to be the nadir of Belichick's 24 years in charge in New England, but a win might be worse. The Patriots are several unlikely wins away from even reaching "in the hunt" status, and the best chance for a franchise reset would be to bottom out completely. But then what? Would Kraft want his famously cantankerous coach, now in his 70s, to start over with another young quarterback? Would he fire him, or does six Super Bowls gain Belichick some sort of immunity or at least an opportunity to part ways amicably? There have been reports that certain other franchises would be interested in his services - the rare coach trade! - but those teams would likely be bad, requiring Belichick to clean up someone else's mess rather than his own. At least we know he wouldn't be shy about cutting some guys.Maybe it was always going to end imperfectly for Belichick in New England. Shula retired before he could be fired, but his Miami teams were still competitive at the time. Tom Landry hung on too long in Dallas, only to be sacked by new owner Jerry Jones.Even the architect of the greatest dynasty in sports couldn't keep it going forever. But Belichick is about to coach in a clash of sad sacks in which many of his own fans hope he loses. It was always going to end, of course. It's just strange that it might be ending like this.Scott Stinson is a former national sports columnist for Postmedia News.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Geno Smith starts Thanksgiving game vs. 49ers despite elbow injury
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith started Thursday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.Smith was listed as questionable for the matchup after suffering an elbow injury in Seattle's Week 11 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was a limited participant at Tuesday's practice but was a full participant on Wednesday. The 33-year-old, who earned his first Pro Bowl berth last season, sustained the ailment late versus the Rams and missed multiple offensive drives. However, he was able to return for the Seahawks' final drive in the fourth quarter, which ended with Jason Myers missing a potential game-winning 55-yard field goal.Smith has completed 65.3% of his passes for 2,404 yards and 12 touchdowns against seven interceptions across 10 starts in 2023. Drew Lock is Seattle's backup quarterback.Meanwhile, running back Kenneth Walker is officially inactive due to an oblique injury. The Seahawks also made pass-rusher Frank Clark a healthy scratch versus San Francisco.
Packers' LaFleur: 'Night and day' improvement in Love's play
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur praised quarterback Jordan Love's recent ability to command the offense after the team's 29-22 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving."I think it's night and day," LaFleur said of Love's play over the last month compared to earlier in the season, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.The young signal-caller played his best game of the year Thursday, totaling 307 yards with three touchdowns and zero turnovers. His 125.5 passer rating was the best mark of his career in a single contest. After a rocky beginning to his first campaign as the Packers' starter, Love's recent play has turned their season around. Green Bay has won three of its last four games, improving its record to 5-6 after a 2-5 start.During those four games, Love totaled 1,164 yards with eight touchdowns and only two turnovers."In my eyes, I think we've seen enough," Packers wide receiver Christian Watson said postgame Thursday, assessing Love's potential future as the franchise quarterback."We know what he's capable of, and for him, he's going to keep on getting better, keep on climbing, keep on getting even more comfortable back there. And we're going to keep on getting better around him, too. We're going to keep on coming up as a team, and that's only going to make all of us better."The Packers will look to continue their hot streak in Week 13 against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Campbell 'not panicked' following Lions' home loss to Packers
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is ready to move on from his team's surprising 29-22 home loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day."The easy thing is to get in panic mode, and I know what it looks like, and it wasn't good enough out there, but I'm not panicked," Campbell said postgame. "We've got the right guys here. We know how to play. We've got to clean some things up and we'll have six to go when we get back. And the fight's on."Detroit has now suffered seven straight losses on Thanksgiving Day.The Packers controlled most of Thursday's game and had a 23-6 lead at halftime over the Lions, who closed as 13.5-point favorites in Week 12. Detroit outgained Green Bay in total yards (464-377) but lost the turnover battle (0-3). Quarterback Jared Goff lost three fumbles against the Packers after turning the ball over three times in Week 11."The turnovers in the first half have certainly been the problem the last two games and have put us behind," Goff said Thursday, according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "Subsequently, part of the reason why we lost today. Yes, the efficiency and how well we'd like to play on offense can certainly go up, and the last two games (are) not to our standard."Campbell's outfit avoided a scare against the Chicago Bears at Ford Field on Sunday, earning a 31-26 come-from-behind victory.Thursday's defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lions, who are now 8-3."We're gonna have to fight and scratch and fight and claw for everything," Campbell added. "We have to. That's the type of team we are."The Lions visit the New Orleans Saints in Week 13.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Steelers interim OC: We feel like we let Matt Canada down
Pittsburgh Steelers interim offensive coordinator Eddie Faulkner says the unit feels a sense of responsibility for Matt Canada's firing."I couldn't say enough good about Matt Canada," Faulkner said, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "It's a little bit bittersweet in that way because when you sit back and you see all that goes on, and all that's being said about him and the offense, we all - and I'm speaking for the offense when I say this to staff - we all felt that we're all part of that."Nobody's absolving themselves from anything that's happened in that regard. We feel like we let him down."Canada's dismissal came amid a historically poor stretch for the Steelers' offense. The unit was outgained in all 10 games this season and averaged just 16.6 points despite compiling a 6-4 record. Head coach Mike Tomlin cited a lack of "rapid" and "consistent" improvements as his reason for firing the offensive coordinator during his third season in the role.Canada was also criticized for second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett's lack of progression. The 2022 former first-round pick has thrown for just six touchdowns to four interceptions this season but has struggled with his accuracy and pocket presence.Pickett said Wednesday that it's too late in the season to expect "wholesale changes" from the Steelers' offense schematically, and Faulkner agreed."Here we are in the middle of the season," Faulkner said. "I mean, you got to roll with what we've been doing, putting game plans together, what our guys can execute. We're going to continue to do that."Though Faulkner will coordinate the unit, quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan will call plays. Week 12 round-robin underdog parlay: Buying Bears, Bills and home teams
If the Raiders had pulled it off over the Dolphins last week, they would have connected with the Packers (+140) and the Giants (+340) for a +700 net, even with the Jets and Titans coming nowhere near an upset. It was one bet for 1.1 units, virtually paid for by going 3-2 against the spread with those same underdogs for net +0.8 units. That made for an exciting three hours of pulling for the underdog that cost 0.3 units to experience, making it more than worth the entertainment - even in a loss. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together - which we also bet against the spread - in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we'll use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, you'll be diving into a gold doubloon silo like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playSeahawks (+270) over 49ersPete Carroll says Geno Smith will likely play on Thursday, but the market is holding steady with a moneyline of +270 - which gives Seattle a 27% chance of winning this game. We discussed why the Seahawks might be valuable here, noting the 49ers' market rating has extended to our artificial ceiling. With a line that was expected to be around +5, if we think there's even a 33% chance that Brock Purdy will falter in Seattle (which will, surprisingly, stay dry), +270 for the home underdog is a good deal.Giants (+150) over PatriotsNo one thinks that Mac Jones is the long-term answer in New England, so it's imperative that the 2-8 Patriots lose this game to try and secure a top-two draft pick. They could then restart the franchise with either Drake Maye or Caleb Williams and refocus on winning championships. There's little case to be made for the Giants to win any game unless the opposition deploys a quarterback capable of turning the ball over six times. New England might be done with Jones, but that doesn't mean the other options - Bailey Zappe or Will Grier - give them a better chance to win, especially with a difficult upcoming schedule. But maybe that's the idea. If it is, we'd be foolish not to take a shot with any home team at +150.Bills (+150) over EaglesEven though the Bills are underwhelming this year, their offense runs efficiently and can move the ball against anyone - if they don't turn the ball over. The Eagles, who just avenged their Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs, wouldn't be in the worst position if they dropped a contest to an adequate Buffalo team. The Bills are far more desperate for a win, and the Eagles have big games coming up with the Cowboys and 49ers on their schedule. The Eagles are missing Jalen Hurts' running ability of last year and Dallas Goedert's constant availability for a clutch conversion. That might be enough for the Bills to steal a win.Raiders (+350) over ChiefsThe Raiders proved they can create turnovers and hang with a better team for 60 minutes. The last 30 minutes this week are where we could get lucky. The Chiefs are the lowest second-half-scoring team in the league, so it's not like they've shown an ability to pull away from teams. If Las Vegas can jump on the visitors, who are in the midst of a short week, they might be able to fend off Patrick Mahomes late. At +350, it's worth testing the waters.Bears (+150) over VikingsThe Vikings beat the Bears in Chicago, but now the quarterback matchup has gone from Kirk Cousins and Tyson Bagent (in relief) to Joshua Dobbs and Justin Fields. Plus, the Bears' defense is now healthy and considerably better with the addition of Montez Sweat to the pass rush. The Dobbs story is objectively cool, but I'm hesitant to rely on improbable plays.Minnesota didn't see the run-heavy version of Fields last year, and his ability to get the offense to the edge should neutralize what Brian Flores wants to do in crowding the line of scrimmage pre-snap.How the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)SEA+NYG+BUF+2300SEA+NYG+LV+4000SEA+NYG+CHI+2400SEA+BUF+LV+4000SEA+BUF+CHI+2300SEA+LV+CHI+4100NYG+BUF+LV+2600NYG+BUF+CHI+1500NYG+LV+CHI+2700BUF+LV+CHI+2700SEA+NYG+BUF+LV+CHI+26000Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Report: Commanders to evaluate Rivera's future after season
Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Washington Commanders plan to evaluate head coach Ron Rivera's position and the future of the front office after the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The 4-7 Commanders reportedly want to avoid an in-season coaching change, as Rivera and new owner Josh Harris developed a strong relationship this season. However, after losing to the injury-hit New York Giants last week, it's unclear whether a Thanksgiving loss to the Dallas Cowboys would change Harris' stance, adds Rapoport. That would give the club a 0-5 record within the NFC East and likely end Washington's playoff hopes.Rivera hasn't produced a winning record since being hired by the Commanders in 2020. His four-year record stands at 26-34-1 entering Week 12, while his career mark is 102-97-2.The 61-year-old had a successful nine-year stint with the Carolina Panthers, producing a 15-1 campaign and a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 and winning two Coach of the Year awards.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Titans committed to Vrabel long term despite 3-7 record
The Tennessee Titans organization "strongly and collectively believes" that Mike Vrabel is the team's long-term answer at head coach despite another disappointing season, high-ranking Titans officials told Dianna Russini of The Athletic. The 3-7 Titans are likely to miss the playoffs for the second straight year. The AFC South club started 2022 with a 7-3 record before dropping seven consecutive games to end the season.Tennessee produced four winning campaigns, three postseason appearances, and two division titles in Vrabel's first four seasons in charge. The organization hired Vrabel in 2018, and the 48-year-old won NFL Coach of the Year in 2021.There's also been speculation that Vrabel would be a contender to take over for Bill Belichick should the New England Patriots, his former team, look to move on from the legendary coach.Vrabel shrugged off speculation about his future Tuesday."I don't try to concern myself with that," he said. "I really am focused on these players. I hurt for them. I played 14 years, won some games, won some championships. I am frustrated for these players."The Titans host the 1-9 Carolina Panthers on Sunday.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Eagles, Cowboys, Vikings among teams eyeing Leonard
The Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Minnesota Vikings are among the teams "collecting information" on free-agent linebacker Shaquille Leonard, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports. However, Leonard - who was a surprising release by the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday - could take time to decide on his next destination. The three-time first-team All-Pro is free to sign with any team after clearing waivers. A club claiming Leonard would reportedly take on his $6.1-million base salary for the rest of the 2023 campaign and a $6.5-million injury guarantee for 2024.Leonard's role with the Colts was reduced after two back surgeries in the offseason. The linebacker has 65 total tackles this season but has lacked his signature big-time plays, recording zero interceptions, forced fumbles, or sacks. He had publicly expressed frustration with his playing time in recent weeks, and Indianapolis decided to keep him inactive for Week 12 and likely beyond before cutting him, a source told Stephen Holder of ESPN.The 28-year-old called his release "shocking" on Tuesday.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Colts' Irsay blames 2014 arrest on prejudice against 'rich, white billionaire'
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told "Real Sports with Bryant Gumble" that his arrest almost a decade ago for driving under the influence happened because of police prejudice against a "rich, white billionaire.""If I'm just the average guy down the block, they're not pulling me in, of course not," Irsay said in an interview aired Tuesday on HBO.When asked how people would receive his comments, the 64-year-old answered, "I don't care what it sounds like. It's the truth."Police in Carmel, Indiana, pulled over Irsay in 2014 for driving erratically and said the Colts owner failed field sobriety tests. Officers also found prescription drugs and $29,000 in cash in the vehicle.A toxicology report later revealed Irsay had oxycodone and hydrocodone in his system."The arrest was wrong," Irsay said in the interview. "I had just had hip surgery and had been in the car for 45 minutes. And what, they asked me to walk the line? Are you kidding me? I can barely walk at all."Tim Green, the police chief at the time of Irsay's arrest, responded to the owner's remarks, saying, "Some comments can be made without any type of evidence and proof," per Josh Peter of USA Today."People who do get stopped and arrested, I know that's not a good experience for them," Green said. "But sometimes they need to look at themselves and understand what the issue and problem is when it comes to driving while impaired, intoxicated alcohol wise or under other narcotics or prescription drugs."Irsay pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in September 2014. The NFL also handed him a six-game suspension.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Seahawks' Walker doubtful, Smith questionable for Thanksgiving game
The Seattle Seahawks are listing running back Kenneth Walker III as doubtful and quarterback Geno Smith as questionable for the team's Thanksgiving night game against the San Francisco 49ers.Walker is dealing with an injured oblique while Smith has a banged-up right elbow. While Walker is unlikely to suit up, Smith remains on track to play in the divisional matchup, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports. Both players sustained their ailments in last week's 17-16 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Drew Lock replaced Smith for eight snaps in the loss, completing 2 of 6 passes for three yards and an interception.Former second-round pick Zach Charbonnet will likely handle the bulk of running back snaps with Walker potentially sidelined. The rookie has 261 yards on 53 carries as Walker's primary backup this season. He's yet to score an NFL touchdown.Seattle sits in second place in the NFC West with a 6-4 record. The 49ers, meanwhile, own the division's best mark at 7-3. The clubs will face off again in Week 14.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Steelers' Pickett not expecting 'wholesale changes' after OC firing
Kenny Pickett isn't expecting major changes to the schematics of the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense following the firing of former coordinator Matt Canada."You can't have wholesale changes at this point," Pickett said Wednesday, according to Joe Rutter of Trib Live. "We're going to run the system we've been using."With Pittsburgh struggling to score and move the football, Mike Tomlin dismissed Canada on Tuesday. He cited a lack of improvement and consistency from the offense as his reason for changing course. The Steelers' offense, which ranks 28th in points scored and yards per play, came under heavy scrutiny for its predictable play-calling and lacklustre results. Despite the team's 6-4 record, they've also been outgained by opponents in all 10 of their games.Pickett, who'd played under Canada since he was drafted in 2022, says he took his former coordinator's dismissal personally."It's a challenge to everybody," Pickett said. "I feel like you have to take it personal. It's a guy you've worked with since I got drafted here. You want to play great, you don't wanna see anyone get let go like that. So absolutely, we have to answer the bell (and) find out what we need to do to play better. "Quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan will handle the majority of play-calling duties moving forward. Running backs coach Eddie Faulkner will serve as the interim offensive coordinator.Sullivan and Faulkner will be tasked with helping Pickett - a former first-round pick - get back on track after a disappointing series of games. Pickett's accuracy and pocket presence have faltered - he's completed just 59.8% of his passes for 465 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions over his last four games.Through 22 career starts, Pickett has thrown 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while averaging 179.4 yards per game.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. The rumblings that Aaron Rodgers could make a return in the 2023-24 regular season grow louder each week. However, most of those rumblings are generated by Rodgers himself, who reportedly told the Jets he wants to start practicing on Dec. 2 and is eyeing a late-December return from his Achilles injury if the team is still in playoff contention. That's a big if since the Jets are 4-6 and will turn to Tim Boyle as they take on the Dolphins on Black Friday.Regardless, do you believe what Rodgers is selling?Oddsmakers at theScore Bet are giving Rodgers +200 odds of playing another snap in the 2023-24 regular season - an implied probability of 33.3%.Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1 of his highly anticipated debut with the Jets, and everyone, except Rodgers apparently, assumed his season was over. The average recovery time from an Achilles tear - if not career-ending - is between 10-12 months. At 39 and quickly closing in on his 40th birthday, Rodgers returning in four months would be somewhat of a miracle. If you are someone who believes in miracles, a better spot to attack an improbable Rodgers return may be the Comeback Player of the Year market.Rodgers is +2200 (bet $10, win $220) to win the award and will be far shorter if he takes a snap this season. Damar Hamlin is the deserving favorite at -140 but, despite plenty of injuries to the Bills' defense, isn't seeing a lot of playing time, which could sway voters toward a player who was more impactful to his team's success.A Rodgers comeback could be viewed as one of the most important in-season returns ever, as the Jets seem to be a quarterback away from being serious Super Bowl contenders.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Drew Brees: I can't throw a football with my right arm anymore
Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees revealed that the effects of a shoulder injury suffered in 2005 have left him with a right arm that "does not work" anymore."I don't throw with my right arm anymore," Brees said on ESPN's "Greeny" radio show. "My right arm does not work. So, when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed."The legendary signal-caller added that he "would absolutely still be playing" if he was able to throw with his right arm. The 44-year-old retired after the 2020 campaign, bringing an end to a 20-year career, but he mentioned that he did receive feelers from teams after he stepped away from the game.Brees was playing for the then-San Diego Chargers when he suffered the career-threatening injury at the end of the 2005 season. He dislocated his shoulder and tore his labrum just before he was set to hit free agency. The former 13-time Pro Bowler says the ailment has caused a degenerative shoulder and all kinds of arthritic issues.Brees' injury scared off the Miami Dolphins in free agency, resulting in Brees signing with the Saints, where he played the final 15 years of his career, won one Super Bowl, and collected 151 wins (including postseason).Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mark Cuban: NBA 'dominates' NFL on social media
Football remains king of television viewership in the United States, but Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban believes the NBA has the NFL beat when it comes to social media popularity.Cuban downplayed the NFL's television dominance during an appearance on the "All the Smoke" podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, saying that TV viewers tend to skew older."Now we have to realize that teenagers are getting all their NBA from social media," Cuban explained. "And when I'm talking at board of governors meetings, I'm like, 'That's where we got to go get the money because TikTok and YouTube and Instagram, they're killing it off of us.'"I was talking to someone, like, 'Well why does the NFL kill you on television?' Because television viewers are older, right?" he continued. "The average age, you know, is 65, 70, 75 now and those people are not on social media. Whereas the NBA dominates the NFL more on social media than the NFL dominates us on television, right? And so that means we've gotta stay closer to kids on social to really keep them connected to us. And that's a lot more work and it changes all the time."As of July, the NFL had 23 of the top 25 most-watched sporting events of 2023, according to Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch. Super Bowl LVII drew the biggest audience this year with 114.21 viewers, followed by the AFC Championship Game (53.12 million viewers) and the NFC Championship Game (47.50 million viewers). The most-watched NBA game of the year thus far was Game 5 of the Finals, which drew 13.08 million viewers.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jones hopeful of starting despite Patriots' QB uncertainty
Mac Jones is approaching the week as if he will be the New England Patriots' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the New York Giants."Hope so," Jones told reporters Wednesday when asked if he'd be starting, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.Jones has started every game this season but has been benched for Bailey Zappe in multiple contests, including a Week 10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. His last benching triggered Bill Belichick to state that every player's role will be reviewed over the team's Week 11 bye. However, Belichick returned from the bye week and declined to publicly declare a starter. When asked if he made a decision during Tuesday's press conference, the legendary coach replied with, we'll let you know on Sunday."Jones says the public uncertainty over his job hasn't affected him."I've seen it all," Jones said, per Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal. "Not really worried about that."The 2021 first-round pick noted that splitting reps with Zappe wouldn't be a major issue for him."You take advantage of the reps you have," Jones said.New England owns the worst record in the AFC with a mark of 2-8. Jones' regression has played a major part in the team's woes, as he's tossed only 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, garnering him a career-low 80.2 passer rating.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc.
