MNF best bets: Broncos look to stun wobbling Bills
The Bills hit the prime-time stage trifecta with their third straight week under the lights. Unfortunately for Buffalo, its streak of underwhelming performances goes back further, as it enters tonight's matchup with five consecutive losses against the spread.Meanwhile, the Broncos went into their bye week with back-to-back outright wins, including a victory over the Chiefs that Denver hopes will act as the turning point for Sean Payton's first season in charge. With two teams at least drifting in opposite directions, does that mean there's something valuable on the side for Monday night?Broncos @ Bills (-7, 47.5)Since their win over the Dolphins, the Bills' rating has dropped from its high point. We're getting close to a buy point on the Bills soon. However, this is more about the current status of the Broncos. The spread for this game got as high as -8.5 early last week but has shortened to the key number of -7, possibly because of bullish sentiment on Denver. It was an ugly start to Payton's tenure. Each Broncos game seemed to feature close-up shots of the head coach, an alleged offensive mastermind, seemingly annoyed in reaction to Russell Wilson not executing his offense. However, Wilson owns a 16-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. If it weren't for last year's fiasco under Nathaniel Hackett, the negative feeling about Wilson wouldn't be pervasive. The biggest issue has been on defense. For the first five games, the Broncos allowed 7.0 yards per play - the worst in the NFL. The 70-point game in Miami was the headline. Then, Denver made some decisions.Recognizable veteran names in the front seven - Frank Clark and Randy Gregory - were jettisoned. Josey Jewell and Justin Simmons (hurt in Weeks 3 and 4, respectively) came back to shore up the communication on defense. Ja'Quan McMillian and Fabian Moreau replaced Essang Bassey and Damarri Mathis in the secondary. With all the appropriate defensive pieces in place for Vance Joseph, the Broncos have allowed just 5.3 yards per play in their last three games, two of which came against Kansas City. The betting market's expectation for Denver before the season was 8.5 wins. Maybe it's taken the Broncos a while to find their level, but if they're a league-average team now and going forward, this line should be under a touchdown against the Bills, a team we haven't definitively found the rating floor for.Pick: Broncos (+7)Javonte Williams: Over 55.5 rushing yardsThe defense is in order. Wilson and Payton have potentially figured out what plays work for the two of them. But you know what else has changed? The health of their star tailback.Coming off an ACL tear, Williams was given some time to work his way back to 100% by averaging 12 carries in the first three games, and he didn't look great. Then Williams got hurt against the Bears and missed another week, getting 10 carries in his return at Kansas City. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry in that game, showing that it might be time he gets a full workload. In the subsequent two games, Williams had 82 and 85 yards, with the number of carries traditionally afforded a true No. 1 running back. With a bye week to get fresh and facing a Bills run defense allowing 4.9 yards per carry (30th in the NFL), Williams should be able to clear this modest total.Dalton Kincaid: Anytime touchdown (+200)If you've been watching the last two prime-time Bills games, this isn't an off-the-radar pick to score. Kincaid has the most receptions (26) on the Bills in the three games since Dawson Knox got hurt. His reception and yardage totals are an option, but they've increased as his offensive role has been elevated. His odds for a touchdown have stayed consistent at +200, but we can be sure Josh Allen will look his way when the Bills get in the red zone.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 10 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.A new MVP candidate Dylan Buell / Getty Images Sport / GettyC.J. Stroud was the big story from last week's games. After a historic performance in Houston's win over Tampa Bay, it was only fair that we call off the Offensive Rookie of the Year race early.Just one week later, it's probably time to take things a step further: Stroud belongs in the MVP conversation, too. That may seem rich to some, and let's be honest here: Voters usually only consider quarterbacks on the league's very best teams. That hardly means Stroud is undeserving, though. While his stat line won't read quite as beautifully as last week's five-touchdown effort, Stroud outplaying Joe Burrow in Cincinnati should be considered his most impressive feat yet. The Texans rookie carved up the Bengals to the tune of 356 passing yards and, for the second time in as many weeks, showed the poise of a veteran while orchestrating a late game-winning drive.Stroud will enter next week on pace for 4,960 yards, 28 touchdowns, and four(ish) interceptions. Most importantly, Houston is now 5-4 and very much a player in the AFC playoff race. The Texans have done well to improve the roster as a whole, and the upgrade in coaching can't be understated. But this is still a largely mediocre roster that is being elevated by a rookie quarterback playing out of his mind. If that's not value, what is?Browns go as Deshaun goes Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettySunday's dramatic win over the division-leading Ravens was the perfect representation of what is possible for these Browns. The defense, as we've seen throughout the season, is as good as it gets. The talent is overwhelming, and Jim Schwartz is doing a masterful job of putting his players in a position to succeed. Yet it seemed like the latest standout effort from this group was going to be wasted by another disastrous Deshaun Watson performance.Watson struggled for much of the first half in Baltimore, completing just 6 of 20 passes for 74 yards. Cleveland couldn't finish drives as a result, settling for three field goals and a 17-9 deficit at the break. But it was a different story from that point forward.Watson was perfect in the second half, connecting on 14 of 14 passes for 134 yards while leading two consecutive touchdown drives and a 12-play 58-yard march late in the fourth quarter to set up a walk-off field goal.A two-quarter sample is hardly enough to overlook the mounting evidence that the decision to acquire Watson in a blockbuster and give him a record fully guaranteed contract was a colossal failure. It's going to be impossible for him to live up to that trade. But finding success against a defense like the Ravens', even if for an abbreviated stretch, should be taken as a sign that there's still a way to salvage this thing. The Browns have to make this work - there's simply no getting out of Watson's contract at any point before 2026, at the earliest. While recapturing his big-play capability would be ideal, this version of the Browns doesn't even need that. An efficient game manager who minimizes mistakes, as we saw Watson do in the second half this week, gives Cleveland an opportunity to go from bubble playoff team to legitimate contender.Could this be the first step in Watson turning a corner?Mike Tomlin is inevitable Justin K. Aller / Getty Images Sport / GettySomebody explain the Steelers to me. I'm begging you. With sincere apologies to the die-hard Pittsburgh fans out there, this team should not be good. In fact, I'd still argue it isn't. But you are what your record says you are in the NFL, and the Steelers are somehow 6-3 after Sunday's win over the Packers. The only explanation is that Mike Tomlin is the greatest coach of this generation. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but his ability to consistently get the most out of his teams is incredible.Pittsburgh finds itself right in the thick of the AFC playoff race despite being outgained in all nine games this year. The reason the team is outgained so regularly?
Rodgers eyeing mid-December return from Achilles injury
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers' goal is to return from his Achilles injury in mid-December, the four-time NFL MVP recently told Melissa Stark of NBC Sports.Jets head coach Robert Saleh addressed Rodgers' future after his team's 16-12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football."If the doctors clear him, then we'll clear him," Saleh said, according to Connor Hughes of SNY.Rodgers - who was traded to New York from the Green Bay Packers during the offseason - tore his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his Jets debut in Week 1.Though the team announced that the 39-year-old was expected to miss the remainder of the season in September, Rodgers has teased a potential return on multiple occasions. He originally didn't rule out playing in the playoffs and reportedly underwent an innovative Achilles surgery to accelerate getting back onto the field.Rodgers has been throwing with his teammates during the Jets' pregame warmups and was recently seen walking without crutches or limping before a game just eight weeks after undergoing surgery.Cameras caught the future Hall of Famer telling Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James to "give (him) a few weeks" when asked about potentially returning. Rodgers said a day later that he was joking, adding that he didn't know the postgame conversation would be recorded.A miraculous Rodgers return would be a fascinating story for a Jets team that has struggled offensively. With Zach Wilson under center, New York has averaged only 16.5 points per game in 2023. The team is 4-5 this season.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Lions' Goff: Campbell showed 'he's got balls of steel' with gutsy 4th-down call
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff praised head coach Dan Campbell for his decision to go for it on a clutch fourth down during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. With the game tied and no timeouts left, the Lions kept their offense on the field on fourth-and-2 from the Chargers' 26-yard line with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter. Goff had a six-yard connection with Sam LaPorta to move the chains before Detroit ran out the clock and kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to claim a 41-38 victory in a thrilling shootout."Ballsy," Goff said of Campbell's decision postgame, according to CBS Sports. "It paid off. We love when he puts us in those positions to make those plays. He's got balls of steel, and today, he showed it."The Lions, who improved to 7-2, put up 533 total yards on offense, but their defense gave up 421 yards.Campbell explained his call on Sunday, saying his offense's momentum played a factor in the final decision."I wanted to finish with the ball," the 47-year-old coach said. "I trusted our guys, I trust Goff. ... I liked where we were at offensively. We were playing good, Goff was in a good spot, and I felt like that was the right thing to do."Goff finished the contest with 23 completions on 33 attempts for 333 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.Detroit entered Week 10 with 17 fourth-down attempts in eight games this season, the fourth-most in the NFL. The team went 4-for-5 on fourth-down situations versus Los Angeles.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Cowboys' Lamb: I'm NFL's best receiver
Dallas Cowboys star CeeDee Lamb doesn't think there's a wide receiver in the NFL right now who's better than him."I'm the top receiver in this game and there is no question about it. If there is, I'll see you again next week," Lamb said after Sunday's 49-17 win over the New York Giants, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.Lamb put on a show versus the Giants, catching 11 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown en route to becoming the first player in NFL history with at least 10 catches and 150 receiving yards in three straight games. He also added a score on the ground against New York.Dak Prescott backs Lamb as the sport's top pass-catcher."No. 1," Prescott said when asked where Lamb ranks among the top receivers in the league, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. "He's the guy I throw to. I know the work he puts in. ... Talented guy. And he's young. He's scratching the surface. He's special."With their Week 10 victory, the Cowboys swept their two-game season series against the Giants by outscoring their division rivals 89-17 in 2023.Lamb, who's now topped 100 receiving yards in five different contests, has racked up 68 catches, 975 yards, and four TD receptions this campaign."We're going to continue to do this for as long as we can," Lamb said postgame about his connection with Prescott, according to Fox Sports. The 6-3 Cowboys visit the 1-8 Carolina Panthers in Week 11.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns make 'big statement' with win over Ravens
The Cleveland Browns know how big Sunday's 33-31 road win over the Baltimore Ravens can be for the team entering the second half of the season."We talked all year about being resilient, no matter what the circumstances are," Browns guard Joel Bitonio said postgame, according to Jake Trotter of ESPN. "We had a couple of backup tackles, a guy we just picked up. ... No one ever gave up. We just kept fighting."He added: "Deshaun (Watson) made some big plays for us, and we got the field goal to win, so it was a big statement for us."Watson had a rough first half versus Baltimore but came up clutch in the final two quarters. The 28-year-old went 14-for-14 passing with 134 yards and one touchdown in the second half. He also engineered a 12-play game-winning drive that ended with a last-second 40-yard field goal from Dustin Hopkins."It's not how you start, it's how you finish," wide receiver Amari Cooper, who caught six passes for 98 yards, said of Watson's performance. The Ravens had a two-possession lead for most of the matchup and were up 31-17 with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. However, led by Watson and a clutch defense, Cleveland scored 16 unanswered points in the final frame to earn the victory."Big win on the road against a very, very great team," Watson said postgame. " ... It was definitely a big moment for us."Watson was wearing a walking boot on his left foot after the game. The three-time Pro Bowler said he doesn't feel great but expects to play in Week 11, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The 6-3 Browns, who've now won two straight, host the Pittsburgh Steelers next.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Saints' Carr exits loss vs. Vikings with right shoulder injury, concussion
New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr did not finish Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings due to a right shoulder injury and a concussion.Carr took a big hit from two Vikings defenders in the third quarter. He was carted to the locker room after briefly entering the medical tent. The initial belief is that Carr avoided a major injury on his shoulder, though further testing will determine the severity, sources told Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.Jameis Winston replaced Carr and almost immediately threw a touchdown to receiver Chris Olave, who made a toe-tap catch to bring in the score.Carr completed 13 of 18 passes for 110 yards before exiting. The veteran signal-caller entered Week 10 with 2,121 yards and 10 touchdowns against four interceptions.Carr, in his first season with the Saints, suffered an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder in Week 3. McCaffrey's TD streak ends in win over Jags, falls short of NFL record
Despite four different San Francisco 49ers players scoring scrimmage touchdowns in the team's 34-3 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Christian McCaffrey couldn't find the end zone for the first time in 18 games.McCaffrey scored a touchdown in 17 straight contests prior to Sunday's game, tying him with former Baltimore Colts running back Lenny Moore, who initially set the record from 1963-64.The 49ers attempted to get McCaffrey the football on the final five plays of their second-last drive of the game, including four plays from the red zone, for him to surpass the milestone. Despite three rushes and one target on the last four plays, McCaffrey couldn't get the record-breaking score.
Stroud engineers winning drive as shorthanded Texans edge Bengals
C.J. Stroud led a game-winning 55-yard drive in the final seconds Sunday to help the Houston Texans edge the Cincinnati Bengals 30-27 at Paycor Stadium.Despite playing without top wide receiver Nico Collins, Stroud finished the day with 23 completions on 39 attempts for 356 yards and one touchdown against one interception. He also added a score on the ground.Houston kicker Matt Amendola, who replaced an injured Ka'imi Fairbairn, converted the game-winning 38-yard field goal to help move the Texans to 5-4.More to come.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jones benched again for Zappe late in Patriots' loss to Colts
The New England Patriots replaced quarterback Mac Jones for Bailey Zappe for the team's final drive in Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany.Jones was pulled from the game after a costly red-zone interception ruined a potential game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.
Kraft: Patriots' record 'isn't what we expected to happen this year'
The New England Patriots sit at the bottom of the AFC with a record falling far below owner Robert Kraft's expectations."This is our 30th year that I've had the privilege of owning this team, and I've never been 2-7," Kraft told NFL Network's Rich Eisen ahead of Sunday's game in Germany against the Indianapolis Colts."It's really disappointing. I had hoped things would be a lot better, as I know our fan base did. I hope today is a chance to reset and make it a much better year. This isn't what we expected to happen this year."The Patriots actually started 2-7 one other time under Kraft, with the team compiling the dismal record during Bill Belichick's first season in charge in 2000, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.Kraft said in March that the team aimed to return to the postseason in 2023.The Patriots aren't inclined to fire Belichick midseason, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The coach is contracted through the 2024 campaign after signing an extension in the offseason, potentially opening up the possibility of New England trading Belichick if the parties opt to part ways, adds Rapoport.Belichick has the most Super Bowl wins (six) and appearances (nine) in NFL history. He also boasts a 264-115 regular-season record across 24 seasons at the helm of the Patriots. However, New England hasn't been the same dominant force since Tom Brady left prior to the 2020 campaign. The Patriots missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons and look set to again sit out come January.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Panthers owner frustrated with offense's stagnation
Unsurprisingly, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper isn't happy with what he's seen from his team 10 weeks into the season.Tepper is particularly frustrated with the Panthers' offense and its lack of improvement, reports The Athletic's Dianna Russini.Carolina dropped to 1-8 following Thursday's 16-13 loss to the Chicago Bears. The Panthers, who haven't scored more than 15 points in any of their last three games, rank 27th in scoring despite using the first overall pick on quarterback Bryce Young in April. The team traded up to get the No. 1 pick from the Bears, giving up a package that included multiple first-round selections and star receiver D.J. Moore.Carolina also named Frank Reich its new head coach during the offseason. A former quarterback, Reich has been unable to smoothen Young's transition to the NFL. The Alabama product has completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,560 yards and eight touchdowns against seven interceptions through eight starts. Some inside the Panthers organization believe the roster hasn't been built correctly, according to Russini. However, there's reportedly still a "unified belief" that Young is the quarterback of the future.Carolina hasn't made the playoffs since Tepper officially acquired the team in 2018.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings' Jefferson won't play Week 10 vs. Saints

The LSU product entered the 21-day practice window Wednesday while rehabbing a hamstring injury. His next opportunity to return will be Week 11 against the Denver Broncos.Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that it'd be a "little aggressive" for Jefferson to play Week 10, according to Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network.Jefferson was off to a hot start before injuring his hamstring. He has 571 yards on 36 catches and three touchdowns in five games this campaign. The Vikings have ripped off four straight victories with Jefferson on injured reserve. Cardinals' Conner off IR, will play vs. Falcons
Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner has been activated from injured reserve and will return for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, the team announced Saturday. With quarterback Kyler Murray set for his season debut in Week 10, the Cardinals will have their starting backfield duo for the first time in 2023. Murray missed the first nine games of the campaign due to a torn ACL suffered in Week 13 of last season."(Conner) is our workhorse in the run game, and it will be good to get him back," coach Jonathan Gannon said. "It helps not only Kyler, it helps our team."Conner has been out since sustaining a knee injury in a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 8.The running back was having another strong season before getting hurt, posting 364 yards and two touchdowns in five games.Conner produced 1,534 rushing yards, 675 receiving yards, and 26 total scores over the last two seasons in Arizona.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 10 player props: Star tailbacks in Sunday's spotlight
We had a vast range of misses with our prop bets last week. There was the miraculous when Christian Watson's leaping catch pushed Jordan Love over his yardage total. There was the sad when Jaren Hall suffered a concussion on a first-quarter rush that left him five yards short of his prop. And there was even the bizarre, as Jonathan Taylor stayed under his rushing yards despite a 20-3 Colts lead at halftime in Carolina. We're left looking to bounce back from a 3-7 Sunday but still confident in the process.Keaton Mitchell: Over 20.5 rushing yardsAfter looking like Michael Cera's character in "Superbad" running from police officer Seth Rogen last Sunday, we've heard all week about how Mitchell will get more opportunity in the Ravens' offense. He may not be the "fastest kid alive," but Mitchell provides explosiveness that Justice Hill and Gus Edwards don't have. Look for him to get at least five carries. The Browns' defense is good, but prior to last week's glorified exhibition with the Cardinals, Cleveland gave up runs of 15-plus yards to eight different tailbacks in its previous four games.Diontae Johnson: Over 63.5 receiving yardsHere are the receiving markets and results for Johnson since his return from injury three games ago:GAME REC TOTAL RECS REC YDS TOTAL REC YDS@LAR4.5545.579JAX4.5850.585TEN5.5760.590Six available bets. Six overs. With Jaire Alexander doubtful to go in the Packers' secondary, there should be room to run on a clear, sunny day in Pittsburgh.Jordan Love: Under 214.5 passing yardsEven on good weather days, Love's produced ugly passing yard totals on the road. The Steelers' secondary can be leaky, but Love hasn't shown much ability to take advantage of that, throwing for 180, 182, 151, and 245 yards in each of four road contests this season. That big game for Love was helped by a 51-yard dump-off to Aaron Jones and a 37-yarder to rookie tight end Luke Musgrave. Pittsburgh's offense isn't likely to put Green Bay in a throw-only game state, so we'll bet Love struggles with his usual usage.Alvin Kamara: Under 87.5 rushing + receiving yardsIt appears teams have noticed the Saints' offense is almost exclusively Kamara, as he's had only four catches in his last two games. Now he faces the Vikings' defense, who give up the third-fewest yards per reception to opposing tailbacks and are fifth against the run. Look for Brian Flores to take away what had been easy offense for Derek Carr and force someone else to beat Minnesota.Chase Young: Over 0.5 sacks (+100)A new weapon on the opponent's defensive line might normally get special attention, but trying to double Young means Nick Bosa, Javon Hargrave, and Arik Armstead get winnable matchups. With over a week to get adjusted at a position that doesn't take much adaptation, look for Young (five sacks in six games) to get to Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars' offensive line has struggled against the top pass-rushing teams in the league. Will Levis: Over 221.5 passing yardsWhy is this total so low? It's actually a 21-yard increase from Levis' total at Pittsburgh. The Titans rookie won't shy away from throwing it deep - going over this number in both starts. Also, the Buccaneers' secondary just gave up 470 yards to C.J. Stroud, and the club ranks 31st in opponent yards per attempt. The market hasn't caught up to Tennessee's willingness to let Levis rip it.Bijan Robinson: Over 80.5 rushing + receiving yardsArthur Smith will tell you how dumb your suggestions are. The coach will say that Desmond Ridder isn't the problem and then bench the quarterback. Now, after saying Robinson's a decoy, expect Smith to realize there's a reason the Falcons burned the eighth overall pick on a stellar offensive piece. They'll throw it to Robinson, and he'll run it. And - as a bonus bet - he'll score (+120).Jahmyr Gibbs: Over 58.5 rushing + receiving yardsThe touchdowns may dry up for Gibbs since David Montgomery's back. But Gibbs showed brilliance in Montgomery's absence, recording 315 yards on 51 touches. Gibbs should get the ball at least 15 times on the fast track at SoFi Stadium, and four yards per touch should be no problem in clearing the second-lowest scrimmage yards total he's had all season.Brian Robinson: Under 47.5 rushing yardsAfter getting gashed by the Ravens last week, look for the Seahawks to tighten up a run defense that's been one of the best in the NFL this campaign. And Robinson hasn't been particularly explosive this year, with runs of 10-plus yards in just four of nine games. To beat this number, he'll need an amount of carries the Commanders' offense isn't likely to give him, especially if they're trailing late.Breece Hall: Over 18.5 receiving yardsHall should have compiled 28 receiving yards Monday night, but a needless block in the back penalty nixed a big catch and run. Hall had other opportunities to replicate his success in the passing game, but Zach Wilson's panic-spiked screen passes prevented that. More Hall should be in the game plan to take some starch out of Maxx Crosby and the Raiders' pass rush. Hopefully, Garrett Wilson can keep his hands to himself Sunday night.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Best NFL Week 10 total bets: Keep betting on unders
Another 2-1 week brings our NFL season total record to 15-12. With dreary quarterback play leading to some ugly offensive displays this season, betting on unders has become a profitable trend. The market is adjusting as totals are increasingly becoming lower. Let's dive into our best total bets for Week 10.Jets @ Raiders under 37 pointsUnders are 23-7 in prime-time games. There isn't a better prime-time under candidate than a Sunday Night Football matchup between the Raiders and Jets. This is worth a bet, even with this total as low as it is.This contest will be played in the teens, leading to most fans snoozing off on their couch late after a tiring Sunday of watching football. The Jets have the third-worst scoring offense and look incompetent with Zach Wilson under center, regardless of the defense they're facing. The Raiders have the NFL's seventh-worst scoring offense, although they scored 30 points against the Giants last week. However, rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell is still unproven. The Jets also have a top-10 scoring defense.Seven of the Raiders' nine games have gone under the total, and five of the Jets' eight contests have gone under.Vikings team total under 19.5 pointsThe Vikings are a feel-good club that had played solid football before Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles tendon. But Minnesota still scored 31 points in its first game without Cousins.Joshua Dobbs entered the Vikings last week with virtually no practice reps with the offense. He was tasked with guiding the team to a win and executed brilliantly. But this is the week Minnesota gets back to reality as a squad that'll be on the outside looking in of the playoff picture. Dobbs is the starter moving forward, and while he has more weapons than he did in Arizona, there's a reason the Cardinals benched him.The Vikings won't be a consistently good offense with Dobbs under center, especially against the Saints, the league's seventh-best scoring defense.Packers @ Steelers under 39 pointsSeven of the Steelers' eight games have gone under the total. They've been an under-machine this season because of their stifling defense and underwhelming offense.Packers games have also gone under more often than not.Jordan Love has been inconsistent, and Green Bay's entire offense struggles to move the ball down the field. The Packers have reached 20 points just once in its last four contests. Pittsburgh is holding teams to 20.4 points per game. The Steelers' offense hasn't been much better. Expect a low-scoring, defensive-oriented game.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. These 11 players deserve kudos for elevating their games to new and unexpected heights.Past Pro Bowlers and rookies aren't eligible for this list, though one late-round gem's emergence was impossible to ignore. One player is named per position, guaranteeing there are omissions that you're welcome to note in the comments.Quarterback: Sam Howell, Commanders Scott Taetsch / Getty ImagesHe takes tons of sacks (4.9 per game) and has tossed nine interceptions in as many weeks, but Howell is making the best of his situation. He's relied on to do more than any NFL starter and has led three fourth-quarter comebacks to win or force overtime.Howell tops the NFL in pass attempts (353, or 39.2 per game) and completions (235). Comfortable chucking the ball, he's also the leader in intended and completed air yards and big-time throws. Only seven starters have a better bad-throw percentage than Howell (12.9%), according to Pro Football Reference. He's on pace to join Mahomes and Justin Herbert as the only 23-year-old quarterbacks to pass for 4,500 yards with a 65% accuracy rate. This All-Riser spot could have belonged to Brock Purdy. He ranks first in net yards gained per pass attempt despite the 49ers' ongoing slide. Howell, hampered by all the sacks, is 27th. Candidly, though, it's more fun to spotlight what Howell's achieved with a demanding workload and lesser supporting cast.Running back: Zack Moss, Colts Justin Casterline / Getty ImagesMoss missed the season opener with a broken forearm, and his carries have dwindled since Jonathan Taylor's holdout ended in October. But he still ranks second in the NFL with 615 rushing yards, trailing only Christian McCaffrey, and tops Taylor in yards per rush (4.7 to 4.1) on twice as many attempts. The fourth-year back has already set career highs in touches (148), scrimmage yards (738), first downs (37), and touchdowns from scrimmage (six). Without a single fumble, Moss has gained 152 rushing yards over expectation to edge Raheem Mostert for the league lead, per Next Gen Stats.Moss' best outings - he torched the Titans for 165 yards and put up 122 against the formidable Ravens defense - signaled the 25-year-old can carry a backfield. He'll be able to pursue a lead role and a satisfactory payday in free agency next offseason.Wide receiver: Puka Nacua, Rams Harry How / Getty ImagesNo other rookies appear in this rundown, but an exception needed to be made for Nacua. The No. 177 draft pick ranks fourth in receiving yardage, and he's gained more yards for the Rams through nine games (827) than he did in his most productive college season at BYU.Nacua is on track to break Ja'Marr Chase's rookie receiving record of 1,455 yards. Including Chase, five wideouts in the Super Bowl era have bagged 1,200 yards as rookies - and each of them was drafted in the first or second round. No one foresaw Nacua joining this group.Nacua caught 39 passes during Cooper Kupp's four-game absence. He's tied with Hill in 20-plus-yard grabs (16). His first touchdown was a walk-off winner in overtime. Even if the Rams' pass attack cools while Matthew Stafford is sidelined, Nacua's debut year will be magical.Tight end: Jonnu Smith, FalconsFactors beyond Smith's control, like Atlanta's erratic quarterback play and abundance of offensive weapons, didn't prevent him from breaking out at 28 years old.Smith primarily runs routes for Desmond Ridder, who ranks 22nd in passing yards. Atlanta's recent first-round picks - tight end Kyle Pitts, wideout Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson - receive more opportunities in the offense. But Smith delivers when called upon, hauling in more catches (34) for greater yardage (422) than he amassed over full seasons with the Patriots in 2021 and 2022.George Kittle is the only tight end gaining more yards per target than Smith (10.3 to 10.0). Smith ranks fifth at the position in receiving success rate (64.3%) and catch rate (81.0%). He wasn't even touched on this sensational screen route against the Vikings.

Panthers' Reich wishes he gave Young 'that moment' instead of late FG in loss
Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich regrets his decision to attempt a late 59-yard field goal during Thursday's 16-13 loss to the Chicago Bears. After originally defending his call postgame, Reich said Friday he wishes he had put the ball in rookie quarterback Bryce Young's hands with the game on the line."Give Bryce that moment, in hindsight," Reich said. "The reason is that there was still time enough left on the clock. Even if we get the conversion, we still have time to drive down and score. It's easy to second-guess yourself, I wish I'd gone the other way. I considered all the options, I went with the statistical play. Our defense was playing good, if we tied it up, I was feeling good about our changes in overtime. ... The thought of winning was always first and foremost."The Panthers - who had two timeouts left at the time - put kicker Eddy Pineiro on the field on a fourth-and-10 at Chicago's 41-yard line. Carolina was down by three with 1:40 left in the fourth quarter. Pineiro - whose career-long field goal is 56 yards - missed the long kick, and the Bears then ran out the clock to seal the game. The loss dropped the Panthers to 1-8 this season."I did confirm that the percentages are what they are. ... Clearly, the odds are in the favor of kicking the field goal," Reich added.Ben Baldwin's fourth-down decision model shows that going for it would've increased Carolina's chances of winning the game by 1.3%. The Panthers converted all three of their fourth-down attempts versus Chicago.Reich, who's in his first year with the Panthers, had said Thursday that he's watched the team "make 60-yarders in practice," according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The Panthers have endured a disappointing campaign. They traded up to select Young first overall in April, but the Alabama product has failed to meet expectations. He has tossed eight touchdowns to seven interceptions in eight starts. The Panthers host the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Texans rule out Collins, 4 other key players vs. Bengals; Stingley to return
Wide receiver Nico Collins was ruled out of the Houston Texans' Week 10 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals with a calf injury, the team announced Friday.Jimmie Ward (hamstring), Dameon Pierce (ankle), Henry To'oTo'o (concussion), and Ka'imi Fairbairn (quad) were also ruled out, while Steven Nelson (back/neck) is listed as questionable.Cornerback Derek Stingley is off the injury report and set to make his return after a six-game absence due to a hamstring injury. He was a full participant in practice Thursday and Friday after the team opened his 21-day practice window Wednesday. The 2022 third overall pick also missed time last year with a hamstring ailment, only suiting up in nine games for Houston. His return will add some much-needed depth to a banged-up secondary.Collins has emerged as the Texans' top pass-catcher in 2023. The Michigan product leads the team in targets (53), receptions (36), and yards (631).Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
49ers' Samuel to return vs. Jaguars after 2-game absence
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has no injury designation ahead of Week 10 and will face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.Samuel missed San Francisco's last two games due to a shoulder injury. The 27-year-old, however, was a full participant at practice this week. The star wideout's return is a big boost to a 49ers offense that's struggled amid a three-game losing streak. San Francisco scored only 17 points in each of those losses before going on bye in Week 9. The club also struggled to take care of the ball, suffering seven turnovers in that span.Samuel, a first-team All-Pro in 2021, has caught 20 passes for 302 yards and one touchdown in six appearances this season. He's also added 95 yards (5.3 per carry) and one score on the ground. In addition to Samuel, San Francisco's star-studded offensive unit features Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk, among others. The 49ers also ruled left tackle Trent Williams and defensive lineman Javon Hargrave as questionable for the Jaguars matchup. Williams is battling an ankle injury, while Hargrave is dealing with a knee ailment, according to Wagoner.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Lions' Montgomery off injury report ahead of contest vs. Chargers
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is off the injury report ahead of the team's Week 10 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.Montgomery missed the club's last two games with injured ribs. The 26-year-old has been productive when available this year. Montgomery has six rushing touchdowns and 451 scrimmage yards in five games this season.Montgomery also missed the team's Week 3 game with a thigh injury.First-round rookie Jahmyr Gibbs has handled the bulk of touches in Montgomery's absence. The 5-foot-9 tailback had the best game of his young career in the team's last game, rushing for 152 yards and a touchdown while adding another 37 yards on five receptions.Center Frank Ragnow is also off the injury report after missing one game with toe and calf injuries, while guard Jonah Jackson is slated to return from a three-game absence after recovering from an ankle injury.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 10 best bets: Are teams desperate at season's midway point?
Earlier this week, we acknowledged that Texans bettors didn't suffer a bad beat on -2.5 against the Buccaneers last Sunday, but they probably deserved better. The same could be said for the Cowboys (+3) at Philadelphia, which required Dallas to go out of its way not to cover that number.Alas, we fall to 64.1% on the season against the spread, still well above any reasonably acceptable pace.Best bets ATSWe've already discussed the five underdogs with a shot to win outright relative to their price, and as always, they're worth a look against the spread.TEAMSPREADPanthers+3.5Vikings+2.5Commanders+6.5JetsPKBroncos+7.5However, with Carolina already home as spread winner, there are more plays worth making this week.49ers @ Jaguars (+3, 44.5)Maybe times aren't desperate for San Francisco, but after three straight losses before its bye, the team might call for desperate measures within the organization. Chase Young's on board, and rumor has it that Jaylon Johnson almost was as well. But getting Trent Williams back is potentially the most pressing personnel issue. He might sit another week, but we'll expect the 49ers to play near the top of their range. The question for Jacksonville: If the team plays to the top of its range, is that good enough to beat the 49ers? Five wins in a row is an impressive feat - an upset win over Buffalo in London is the best of that bunch - and a 6-2 record might be creating value for a bet on San Francisco, especially if Williams is back.Pick: 49ers -3Titans @ Buccaneers (-1, 39.5)Atlanta's allowed the sixth-fewest pass yards per attempt (YPA), and the Steelers' defense in Pittsburgh is scary. Will Levis impressed in both those scenarios, and now the Titans face the Buccaneers, who are coming off a game in which they allowed 470 to another rookie - something characteristic of a banged-up secondary that's allowed the second-most YPA in the league. Tampa Bay has lost four straight games, and this pick'em line asks the team to snap that skid. But against the Titans - offensively rejuvenated by their new QB - we won't expect that.Pick: Titans +1Falcons @ Cardinals (+2, 43.5)There wasn't one minute of the NFL season before this week in which the Falcons would've been considered just 1.5-point favorites at Arizona. Dropping the Falcons' rating for recent play and using the Cardinals' rating before the Clayton Tune experience would make Atlanta favored by more than three points. The obvious thing to ponder is whether Kyler Murray's return can give the Cardinals that big of a boost to make this closer to a 50/50 outcome. I doubt that Murray, in his first game in a year, is a significant upgrade on Joshua Dobbs. We're also buying the Falcons at their low point. But unlike most scenarios where we do that, there's a very obvious route to improvement.Give Bijan Robinson the ball.Arthur Smith was staunch that Desmond Ridder wasn't the problem until he benched him days later. Now, he's praising Robinson for being a great decoy. It won't be surprising if he turns the No. 8 overall pick loose, and, as a result, the offense looks better against a bad Cardinals defense.Pick: Falcons -1.5Browns @ Ravens (-6.5, 38.5)Here's a list of teams in the top five of both offensive and defensive DVOA: The Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens' market rating has been steadily rising each week, which normally means they should be faded. But they keep covering with ease. That tells us there's still room for Baltimore to be rated higher as a Super Bowl contender on par with the Chiefs, Eagles, and 49ers. The team's metrics certainly back that up.What did we learn from Deshaun Watson's return in a shutout win over Arizona? Nothing. Despite short fields and quick Cardinals possessions, the Browns needed a ricochet passing touchdown to stretch the lead. Cleveland's getting too much credit in its rating, and the Ravens can win convincingly again.Pick: Ravens -6.5Lions @ Chargers (+3, 48.5)Speaking of too much credit, neither the Chargers nor the Lions should see their rating boost for sketchy covers over the Jets, Bears, and Raiders. So why is Detroit's rating going up?I bet the Lions' moneyline at -120 early in the week, but now that this line is up to a full field goal - presumably because of a pro-Lions stance - I'll be betting back on the Bolts. If nothing else, Los Angeles has played cleaner since the loss to Kansas City, and this game should go down to the wire on Sunday.Pick: Chargers +3Moneyline upset of the weekBroncos (+275) over BillsWe've discussed this in the round-robin moneyline parlay and will dig deeper on Monday, but the Broncos have the best chance of any below-average team to play to the top of its range, and we still don't have a stable understanding of the Bills' range.Best 6-point teaser / Alternative spread parlayPatriots (Alt line: +8.5) / Packers ML (+100)We'll turn the premise on its head this week, showing that you don't have to tease two games to manipulate the spread in a valuable way.Instead of waiting for the Colts to get up to -2.5 to tease the Patriots up through all the key numbers and force another teaser leg, we'll use the Patriots' alternative line of +8.5 to take the spread out of play in Pittsburgh.Maybe Mac Jones throws a pair of pick-sixes, but the New England offense has improved since a disastrous stretch, and the Colts aren't built to stretch a lead without outlier events. Meanwhile, betting against the Packers to win a road game is exactly where we want to be.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Vikings' Jefferson questionable to make return vs. Saints
Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson is listed as questionable for Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Friday. The team opened his 21-day practice window Wednesday, creating the potential for him to return from a hamstring issue. If he is going to play Sunday, Minnesota has until 4 p.m. ET on Saturday to officially activate him from injured reserve.Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that it "would be a little aggressive" to have Jefferson suit up in Week 10, according to Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network.Jefferson has missed the last four games due to a hamstring ailment suffered in Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 10."Hamstring is a difficult injury just because it lingers," Jefferson said Thursday. "They want me 100%, as I do as well. I don't want to go out there 80, 90% and have the chance of hurting it again."The 24-year-old leads the NFL in receiving yards since entering the league in 2020. He has 360 catches for 5,396 yards and 28 touchdowns in 55 career games.Minnesota also listed tight end T.J. Hockenson as questionable due to a rib injury.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals' Higgins out vs. Texans due to hamstring injury; Chase questionable
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins will miss Sunday's game against the Houston Texans due to a hamstring injury, the team announced Friday.Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is listed as questionable due to a back injury. He was a limited participant in practice on Thursday and Friday after missing Wednesday's session.Chase sounds optimistic about his availability versus Houston."In my head, I'm playing," Chase said Thursday, according to ESPN's Ben Baby. "So until further notice and anything else, then we'll see."The 24-year-old Higgins sustained the injury at practice Wednesday and didn't practice Thursday or Friday. He'll be considered week-to-week moving forward, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.Higgins is coming off his best game this season - he caught eight passes for 110 yards in Week 9.Through seven appearances on the campaign, Higgins has racked up 328 yards and two touchdowns on 27 receptions. He also missed Week 5 due to a rib injury. The Clemson product, whom Cincinnati drafted in the second round in 2020, averaged 71 catches, 1,009 yards, and six touchdowns per year in his first three NFL seasons.Led by quarterback Joe Burrow, the Bengals are one of the NFL's hottest teams right now. Since starting the season 1-3, they've won four straight contests.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

4 reasons why the NFL has so many bad quarterbacks
It's hard to pick the moment that Troy Aikman's disgust with the New York Jets' offense in general, and quarterback Zach Wilson in particular, was most palpable. It might've been when Wilson missed a throw to a wide-open - and stationary - Tyler Conklin in the first half on Monday Night Football or when he somehow underthrew a pitch to halfback Breece Hall. It could've been when, coming back from halftime, partner Joe Buck teed him up with a comment that the Jets' offense was bound to improve, and Aikman said, "Well, you'd think," clearly not convinced that even a dead-cat bounce was likely. But it was probably in the dying seconds of the 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers when Wilson completed a series of checkdowns and then a throw down the middle to Conklin against a Chargers defense that had stopped trying."This is when Zach comes alive," Aikman said, "Look out." Those last two words were uttered with such disdain that you almost expected them to be followed by the sound of Aikman spiking his headset.Wilson's display - zero touchdowns, two fumbles, and eight sacks taken - was a fitting bookend to a weekend full of quarterback futility in an NFL season that's included an excessive amount of it. On the same Sunday afternoon, people named Clayton Tune and Tommy DeVito were taking meaningful snaps, continuing a weird trend in which late-round rookies are thrown into the "most important position in sports" if the job hasn't already been handed to a castoff veteran just added to the roster. Icon Sportswire / Getty ImagesEven as players like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are redefining elite quarterback play, teams without a superstar at the position are struggling to find someone who's even baseline competent. It's a curious look for a league as big and all-consuming as the NFL and a question for which there are a few theories: Why so many bad quarterbacks? The draft puzzleTruly, the league should be better at this. Mahomes was taken 10th overall in 2017 - eight spots after Mitch Trubisky. In the years since, the success rate on high picks isn't unlike that of the Jets' offense on Monday night. Baker Mayfield (first overall, 2018) is on his fourth team, and Sam Darnold (third overall, 2018) is on his third.Five quarterbacks were selected in the top half of the 2021 draft, and of those, only Trevor Lawrence has proven to be a sure thing. Wilson and Trey Lance flopped, Mac Jones is rapidly approaching flop status, and Justin Fields has the rest of this season to prove that Chicago shouldn't draft his replacement. Meanwhile, MVP candidates Jackson (32nd overall, 2018) and Jalen Hurts (53rd overall, 2020) were available to anyone who wanted them. If there's a trick to predicting NFL success at the position, few draft rooms have figured it out. Boston Globe / Boston Globe / GettyThe cap crunchThe NFL's hilariously complicated salary structure has seen more money allocated toward high-leverage positions like wide receiver and cornerback in recent years. While this has been most evident in the lack of big paydays for running backs, teams also don't want to spend much on backup quarterbacks, which helps explain why so many roster spots are filled by players like Tune and DeVito. Add in a couple of injuries, and suddenly, your season is in the hands of someone whose job so far has been to provide practice-squad ballast.Maybe Ryan Fitzpatrick should be required to stay ready to play as a league-wide emergency call-up - especially since the L.A. Rams just signed Carson Wentz for this reason. It's the system, stupidBrock Purdy's rise from last overall draft pick in 2022 to one of the league's top passers is the best evidence yet that all of the bad quarterback performances might say more about the guys scheming and calling the plays than the guy actually throwing the ball. But Purdy's success in San Francisco with Kyle Shanahan isn't a one-off. Hurts in Philadelphia and Tua Tagovailoa in Miami both had pretty grim starts to their careers until new coaches and new offensive systems allowed them to flourish. It suggests that teams forever trying to uncover a jewel in the draft (hello, Chicago) would be better served by building an elite coaching staff first and then getting the player to pilot the system later. It's the stupid systemExcept maybe some of what goes into developing a modern NFL offense has simply become too complicated. Josh Dobbs has already entered league folklore by showing up midweek in Minnesota after a trade and then having to play in an emergency when rookie starter Jaren Hall was injured. The story of coach Kevin O'Connell having to explain plays to Dobbs through his headset as he was calling them in the huddle is amazing, but it also must have forced a simplicity on what Dobbs was asked to do. "Look to the left sideline, and if that throw isn't there, hit the guy in the flat." That kind of thing.Put another way, the number of passers who can process complicated instructions, make adjustments at the line, and make the correct reads in the three seconds before pressure arrives might be smaller than the coaches calling the plays are willing to admit. Not to get overly old-timey here, but one of the reasons an announcer like Aikman gets so annoyed at poor quarterback play is because the league has made so many changes to favor offense since the days when he played. Quarterbacks are protected, and defenders get flagged for almost any contact. It seems like the subtext to Aikman's Wilson-related outbursts this week was: Guys, it shouldn't be this hard.Scott Stinson is a former national sports columnist for Postmedia News.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Panthers' Young: 'I have to be a lot better'
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is shouldering plenty of blame for the team's abysmal start to the 2023 season."First and foremost, I have to be a lot better," said Young after the team's 16-13 loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday, according to team reporter Darin Gantt. "We're competitors, and losing is frustrating. It's fresh, you feel it, but at the end of the day, you've got to turn the page. Being frustrated, however you feel, it's not going to win you a game, it's not going to help."The Panthers have stumbled to a 1-8 record this season, with Young holding a 1-7 mark. The signal-caller missed Week 3 with an ankle injury.Young has thrown for 1,560 yards with eight touchdowns against seven interceptions on 62.8% passing this campaign. Carolina ranks 30th in yards per game and 27th in points per game after Thursday's effort."We're just not hitting on all cylinders right now. We're not hitting on any cylinders," wide receiver Adam Thielen said, per Gantt. "It's an embarrassing effort. I think everyone's just embarrassed, you know, put up what, six points on offense."Thielen, 33, has been one of the few bright spots on offense through the season, hauling in 68 receptions for 652 yards and four touchdowns."We're doing the right things; building the momentum that way, but it's just not translating. That's tough," he said.Carolina's next opportunity to get the offense on track and back in the win column will come in Week 11 against the Dallas Cowboys. Bills' offense had players-only meeting after Bengals loss
The Buffalo Bills had a players-only meeting following their 24-18 road loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9.Veteran running back Latavius Murray - who joined the Bills in May for his 11th NFL season - said he called for the meeting with other offensive players after Buffalo dropped to 5-4 this season."Just wanted to bring the guys together and talk about some things and see how we as an offense can make a difference," Murray said Thursday, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith. "So we talked about a few things so hopefully it was received and hopefully it's a step in the right direction."Buffalo entered the season as a Super Bowl contender and started the campaign 3-1 but has since lost three out of five games. The team has averaged only 20.2 over that span, and the Bengals matchup marked the second time in four weeks the Bills didn't score more than 18.Buffalo has suffered seven turnovers since Week 6 and forced only one takeaway."A lot of times, it's getting redundant, it's us beating ourselves," Murray added. "So how can we avoid that? What can we do possibly different during the week? Whatever. How can we avoid that? How can we find something that's different amongst us so we get a different result. ... It's the halfway point almost, coming off a loss where we feel we hurt ourselves once again."The Bills still rank fifth in both points scored and allowed in 2023.Murray has rushed for 147 yards (3.5 per carry) and two touchdowns in nine appearances this year. Bills' Miller: No bad blood with Broncos ahead of MNF
Von Miller spent 11 seasons with the Denver Broncos before being traded in 2021. On Monday, the Buffalo Bills pass-rusher will face his former team for the first time, but he doesn't view the contest as a personal revenge game."I left on good terms, left to go win a Super Bowl. I had a great relationship with everyone in that facility," Miller said Thursday, according to The Athletic's Nick Kosmider. "For me, I didn't want to leave. I cried real tears when I left. To see them again and see that organization winning and starting to do better is a treat for me. It would never be the other way around for me."Miller said there's no ill will on his side because he "didn't have bad blood with anybody" before he was shipped to the Los Angeles Rams for a second- and third-round pick."It's just another game," Miller added. The three-time first-team All-Pro went on to win his second Super Bowl ring with the Rams. He signed with the Bills as a free agent in March 2022.Denver drafted Miller second overall in 2011. The Texas A&M product quickly became recognized as one of the league's most prolific pass-rushers and was named MVP of Super Bowl 50. Miller remains the Broncos' all-time leader in sacks (110.5) and tackles for loss (142).Miller said he really values his friendship with current Broncos such as Justin Simmons, Garett Bolles, and Pat Surtain II. He isn't expecting much fanfare ahead of his return given that changes to coaches and ownership have taken place since his last game in a Broncos uniform nearly two years ago.Miller is increasing his workload after tearing his ACL during a Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions, which forced him to miss the rest of the 2022 season. Kyler: Cardinals are 'not a bad football team'
Quarterback Kyler Murray thinks the Arizona Cardinals are closer to being a good team than their record indicates."We're really not that far off," Murray said Thursday, according to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss. "Obviously people may think we're a bad football team. We're not a bad football team. We gotta clean some things up and we need to make more plays. And that's what it comes down to, is making plays."The Cardinals are currently 1-8 and would have the No. 1 pick in the draft if the season ended today. They rank 28th in scoring offense and 27th in points allowed per game.Murray is expected to make his season debut Sunday after working his way back from tearing his ACL last December.Rehabbing the injury has changed Murray's mindset as he anticipates his return."I just feel like I gained a new level of resiliency with this," the signal-caller said, per PHNX Cardinals. "Already felt like (I) had that chip on my shoulder. Never out of anything, never down, always feel like I can win anything. ... When you go through something like this, you find out really quick about who you are and what you're about."Murray will be the third quarterback to start under center for Arizona this season. New York Giants defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale said Thursday that he was caught off guard by defensive back Xavier McKinney's comments criticizing the team's defense after their 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders."It surprised me because it's the first time it's ever happened in my career that a player would make a statement like that," the 60-year-old Martindale said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "I think it was a case of the kid is just frustrated from losing. We spoke. We cleared it up. The example that he gave me of what he was talking about was an in-game adjustment."McKinney, a team captain, voiced his frustration regarding the Martindale-led defensive unit on Sunday after the blowout defeat that dropped the Giants to 2-7 this season."From a leadership standpoint, I don't think they've done a great job of letting the leaders lead and listening to the leaders and the captains," McKinney said after Week 9, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "It was one of those things where you have some of your leaders, captains from a defensive standpoint, trying to switch things up. And just not really being heard."Martindale said Thursday he told McKinney comments like that hurt the locker room."It really took a while for him to point out exactly what it was," he said. "But I think you grow from that, and I just told him that is something that, it hurts the locker room. It hurts the defensive room when you say something like that.""When you make a statement like that, it puts money in your pockets and takes it out of ours. Talking about the media. You just have to understand that it was an emotional thing right after the game," Martindale added, per Alper. After making the playoffs with a 9-7-1 record last season, the Giants have been one of the NFL's most disappointing teams in 2023. New York ranks dead last in points scored and 24th in points allowed.McKinney, a 2020 second-round pick, has racked up 53 tackles and six pass breakups in nine starts this year. His rookie contract expires at the end of the season.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jefferson: 'No-brainer' to return from injury regardless of Vikings' success
Justin Jefferson gave no consideration to sitting out the rest of the season to get healthy if the Minnesota Vikings played poorly."That's a no-brainer," Jefferson said Thursday when asked how sure he was about coming back. "I'm always going to want to play football. Whether we didn't win a game or (if we) had won every single game this season. "He added: "I always say that I want to be a Hall of Famer, so I can't just sit out missing games just for the fun of it and just because we're not doing well."The Vikings opened the 21-day practice window to activate Jefferson off injured reserve Wednesday. The star wideout missed the last four games due to a hamstring injury.Jefferson described himself as "day-to-day" on Thursday and didn't give an estimate on when he'll return. However, he added that the ailment is getting better every day."Hamstring is a difficult injury just because it lingers," Jefferson said. "They want me 100%, as I do as well. I don't want to go out there 80%, 90% and have the chance of hurting it again."The three-time Pro Bowler said this has been his longest injury-related absence since high school."In this situation, being out for a couple weeks during the season, having to miss games is definitely not ideal for me. It's not something I'm used to but it makes me want to get back on that field even more," Jefferson said. The Vikings have won four games in a row to move to 5-4 but will have to navigate the rest of the season without starting Kirk Cousins after the quarterback tore his Achilles in Week 8.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Week 10 round-robin underdog parlay: Bookend upsets
Two underdogs won in Week 9, but not two 'dogs that we bet. Out of 14 games on the schedule, just the Vikings (which we had) and Commanders won outright. I don't have Josh Dobbs' rocket science degree, but I do know it's hard to find three underdogs when only two are available. As for Week 10, well, there seems to be a limited selection to choose from. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together - which we also bet against the spread - in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we'll use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, you'll be diving into a gold doubloon silo like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playPanthers (+150) over BearsIt's unscientific, but it would be quite something if the Heisman Trophy-winning, No. 1 overall pick, Bryce Young, lost to Harlon Hill Trophy winner (the MVP honor for Division II) and undrafted free-agent rookie Tyson Bagent. It's entirely possible that ends up being the case, but if we think this matchup is closer to 50-50, then getting a +150 or better price is worth starting our bet for the week on Thursday night.Vikings (+125) over SaintsWhat's less enticing than backing the Saints as a big favorite - as they were last week? How about the idea that they're a road favorite against a team that's manufactured some mojo without its two best players? We've discussed the Vikings' defensive turnaround repeatedly in this space. However, their relative weakness is against the pass. That's not something the Saints can take advantage of, as they're ranked 21st in yards per pass. Minnesota should be able to keep Alvin Kamara in check, as the Vikings field a top-five defense against the run and have allowed just 4.7 targets and 22.6 receiving yards per game to opponents' tailbacks. Outside of getting caught on a blitz and burned for a long touchdown, the Vikings did well against Christian McCaffrey.Dobbs doesn't need to learn his teammates' names this week, but any increase in knowledge of the plays beyond a first read would be helpful and give the Vikings a chance to win.Commanders (+220) over SeahawksSunday's selection of sizeable underdogs eligible for our weekly guilty pleasure bet is pretty limited. Fading the Ravens or Bengals doesn't sound appealing in their current form. Are the Giants something you might be interested in? Doubtful.Almost by default, the Commanders are the look against the Seahawks. Washington's tweaked the offense to try to stem the sack avalanche that's run over Sam Howell this season. After being dropped almost six times per game, he's suffered four sacks combined in the last two. Relatedly, they almost beat the Eagles and won on the road in New England. We tried Seattle as an underdog last week, citing that the Hawks could beat anyone and lose to almost anyone. The Commanders qualify as a group that can keep pace with the Seahawks - who lost by a million in Baltimore - and maybe pull off an upset.Raiders (+100) over JetsThe Jets' offensive line was a problem on Monday night, and now they get a look at Maxx Crosby, who's a half-sack off the league lead. Let's just say we're expecting a Zach Wilson fumble in this one.The question around the Raiders is whether the energy boost from ridding themselves of Josh McDaniels can continue for one more week. The reference point is last year's Colts, who never won another game after beating (coincidentally) Las Vegas in Jeff Saturday's coaching debut. However, the Colts faced the Eagles in their next game and nearly beat them outright. This version of the Jets isn't going to the Super Bowl, so look for the good Vegas vibes to extend one more week ... and then likely go up in flames in Miami in Week 11.Broncos (+280) over BillsIt's a bookend week for the "RUMP," and we're saving the best for last. The Bills haven't covered a spread since Oct. 1, a run that's seen their estimated market rating drop from the mid-70s to the mid-60s. Maybe bettors have landed on an appropriate rating for Buffalo, but now there's reason to believe we might collectively be too low on the Broncos. The expectation that Sean Payton would completely turn around a bad Broncos team right from the start of the season probably wasn't fair. However, now that we've reached the midway point, Denver won back-to-back games going into its bye, as the team shifted its defensive personnel due to benchings and injury returnees.Meanwhile, Russell Wilson's stats have taken a turn for the better:SEASONGAMESCOMP%TD:INT20221560.516:92023866.116:4How the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)CAR+MIN+WSH+1700CAR+MIN+LV+1000CAR+MIN+DEN+2000CAR+WSH+LV+1400CAR+WSH+DEN+2900CAR+LV+DEN+1700MIN+WSH+LV+1300MIN+WSH+DEN+2700MIN+LV+DEN+1500WSH+LV+DEN+2300CAR+MIN+WSH+LV+DEN+13000Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. TNF best bets: Struggling squads compare rebuilds
The Thursday night game is saved for niche matchups. You rarely find high-end NFC East rivals going at it in this time slot. What you usually get are two teams connected in some ostensible way.In many cases, like with the Panthers and Bears this Thursday, there's no on-field connection. Carolina and Chicago completed the biggest deal of the offseason when the Panthers sent a haul of assets to the Bears for the first overall pick. Most of those assets have yet to become players on the field, and it's not like Bryce Young is a former Bear. So, we're left with DJ Moore's first meeting with his former squad in a matchup of teams with three combined wins. Thankfully, betting exists.Panthers @ Bears (-3.5, 39.5)The lookahead line for this game - before Sunday's results - was Bears -1.5. That line was built with the expectation that Justin Fields is ready to go. Then Carolina got beaten soundly at home by the Colts. The line re-opened at Bears -2 but was bet up early in the week due to the market souring on the Panthers after Young's pair of pick-sixes and the hope that Fields will play. The line reached as high as -4 before it was announced that Fields' status was doubtful. The question is now whether the point spread will cross back over the key number of -3 with Tyson Bagent getting his third consecutive start. While Bagent functions well with the basics - getting the offense lined up, knowing where the ball is supposed to go, escaping pressure when the pocket breaks down, and scrambling for the first down - he doesn't have the arm strength or accuracy to win enough games as a starter. Without the game-breaking talent of Fields, a fair price with Bagent in the game would be much closer to pick'em.If the line were to plummet to where this game is a virtual toss-up, the Bears would be worth a bet, but as of this writing, we haven't seen that. Starting a position on the Panthers getting over a field goal is how to play it at current odds.Pick: Panthers (+3.5)Tyson Bagent: Over 0.5 interceptions (-140)It's more juice than we're hoping to lay in this space, but Bagent's thrown six interceptions already. He'll try to squeeze throws into the places where you need to, but he doesn't have the arm talent to get them there. Plus, he's shown a tendency to overlook defenders and throw directly to an opponent. Expect Ejiro Evero to follow recent defensive coordinators who are able to confuse Bagent and force an errant throw.Tyson Bagent: Anytime touchdown (+335)Let's try a pair of long-shot touchdown bets and start with Bagent. He got comfortable with running last week, and it looked like the Bears factored his legs into the game plan. At one point, Bagent took off and dove for a first down on the sideline. If his turnover issues are in the back of his mind, he may be less likely to force a throw near the end zone and instead opt to take off himself.Tommy Tremble: Anytime touchdown (+850)Against the Colts, Hayden Hurst and Tommy Tremble were on the field for a total of 74 of 71 total snaps. Since the Week 7 bye, the Panthers have split snaps between the two, but Hurst's odds for a touchdown are half as long as Tremble's. Hurst's only touchdown came in Week 1, when Tremble wasn't playing much. Meanwhile, Tremble's got two one-yard touchdowns in his last four games and is clearly an option for Young by the goal line.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. 5 biggest questions halfway through the 2023 NFL season
The last month has changed many of our early perceptions of the NFL's pecking order as numerous teams caught fire or found themselves in a slump. Here are the NFL's five biggest questions at the midway point of the season. What's gone wrong for 49ers, Dolphins? Stephen Maturen / Getty Images Sport / GettySan Francisco and Miami don't look anywhere near as untouchable as they did earlier this season. Since starting 5-0, the 49ers have dropped three in a row. The formerly 4-1 Dolphins have gone 2-2 since Week 5 but have lost two of their last three. So, just how did these behemoths come crashing down to earth after a ton of early-season hype? We'll address Brock Purdy in a second, but it would be unfair not to mention the injury bug that's infected the 49ers during this tough stretch. Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams missed the past two games. Those are huge losses for the 49ers' offense, and no one has felt the consequences more than Purdy. But for arguably the first time in his career, there's pressure on Purdy's arm to win games, and so far, he hasn't been able to do so. Perhaps some regression to the mean was due after the 2022 seventh-round pick captivated our hearts with a 10-0 start to his regular-season career. However, Purdy's performance in the fourth quarter - especially in do-or-die moments - is increasingly worrying for a title-hopeful 49ers team. Here's how some of his key stats break down this season:Situation Completion % TDs INTs Passer Rating1st quarter73.7%30112.52nd quarter66.1%40118.23rd quarter73.5%22107.44th quarter60.7%3382.24th quarter within 7 points44.4%0323.1The Dolphins' play has been less problematic, but it's still created questions about their true place in the category of NFL heavyweights. All three of Miami's losses this season were against traditional contenders: the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills. Mike McDaniel's club has not beaten a team with a winning record since Week 3 of 2022 and has lost six straight to opponents over .500, per NFL Network's James Palmer. The Dolphins have no problem beating inferior talent - and they have a lot of it on their schedule - but eventually, they need to prove they can hang with the best.Should NFL ban the 'tush push'? Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe biggest debate at the midway point of the 2023 season may not be about the best team or best player, but about a single play that has created more controversy than anything else: the "tush push."The play - which looks more like a rugby scrum than a quarterback sneak - has been borderline unstoppable ... for the Eagles, that is. Despite critics of the play describing the quarterback-sneak variation as unfair and impossible to stop, other teams replicating the tush push haven't reproduced Philadelphia's success. The Giants even lost two players to injury on a failed attempt at the play in Week 4.No one has been a bigger supporter of the tush push than Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. From his perspective, Philadelphia has found a legal competitive advantage and it's up to other teams to either stop it or copy it. Outlawing the play would be unsportsmanlike, according to its advocates."Every first down is first-and-9," Sirianni said in October. "People can't do it like we can do it. Don't ban this play. If everybody could do it, everybody would do it."Sirianni isn't exaggerating. Philadelphia has had success everywhere with the play: on fourth down, on the goal line, and even backed up against its own end zone.
Raiders defend cigar celebration after 1st post-McDaniels win
The Las Vegas Raiders aren't apologizing for commemorating their victory over the New York Giants last Sunday by lighting up celebratory cigars.Players were joyful after the team earned a dominating 30-6 win in their first game after head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler were dismissed. The duo posted a 9-16 record in just over a season with the franchise.Members of the team stood by the decision to spark a stylish celebration after their first win under interim head coach Antonio Pierce. The victory halted a two-game slide for the Raiders but also appeared to mark a potential turning point for players."I mean, it's definitely different in the middle of a season," star receiver Davante Adams said Wednesday, per Logan Reever of 8 News Now. "Anybody that's dealt with the type of adversity that we have this year, just the ups and downs and all the negative attention and a lot of drama and stuff, they'll never understand why we had that feeling and why it led to cigars being lit in the locker room."Obviously not everybody agrees with it. But you won't last in this league if you care too much what other people think and how they feel about what you do," the wideout added. The three-time first-team All-Pro is optimistic that the Raiders can make winning normal so that lighting up doesn't become a tradition during the regular season.Adams wasn't alone in defending the team's actions last weekend. Star pass-rusher Maxx Crosby also enjoyed the festivities."Whoever loves me, loves me. Whoever doesn't - I don't give a damn," defensive end Crosby said, according to Reever. "That's the Raider way. I love it."Crosby, who posted a season-high three sacks in the win, believes that Las Vegas needs to match the energy from the Week 9 victory and carry it forward throughout the remainder of the season. The Raiders (4-5) will host the New York Jets (4-4) on Sunday Night Football in Week 10.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Wilson believes he can overcome offensive woes: 'It's going to click'
Embattled New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson says he's improved since last season when he was benched twice."I feel like I'm in a good spot, and it sucks because we're not doing a lot offensively," Wilson said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "But progressively, each week, I feel more and more comfortable. I feel like I'm getting better. That's all you can do, really, in my eyes. If you're progressively working to improve and get better, it's going to click at some point."Wilson has failed to throw a touchdown in four of his seven starts since replacing Aaron Rodgers after the team's season opener. The Jets' offense has only found the end zone thrice in the last four games.Despite the Jets' offensive woes, head coach Robert Saleh refuted reports that ownership has instructed him to continue starting the 24-year-old passer."No, we're on the same page with that," Saleh said. "So, any conspiracy theory that might be out there, we're on the same page."While Saleh said "there are a lot of things (Wilson) can do better," he pointed out that the quarterback's supporting cast also needs to improve.Wilson has thrown for 1,600 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions while posting a 75.4 quarterback rating. The BYU product has flashed moments of productive potential, outplaying reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes by passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.New York's (4-4) playoff ambitions remain achievable, but Wilson said the offense needs to bring more to the table to complement the defense, which is a top-10 unit and allowing an average of 312 yards and 19.5 points per game."As an offense, we know it's close. It sucks because we keep saying 'close.' I get sick of that, and I know everybody else does, too. But we really are," Wilson said.Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian - who's on the practice roster - are the team's other quarterback options. Rodgers, who continues to aggressively rehab a torn Achilles tendon, admitted he's unlikely to return in the near future. The Jets take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football in Week 10.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings open 21-day practice window for Justin Jefferson
The Minnesota Vikings opened the 21-day practice window for wide receiver Justin Jefferson, the team announced Wednesday.Despite the move, the Vikings aren't rushing to get Jefferson back on the field, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Minnesota placed the 24-year-old on injured reserve in early October after he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs.Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that it "would be a little aggressive" to have Jefferson suit up in Week 10," according to Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network.Considered one of the NFL's best pass-catchers, Jefferson started the 2023 campaign off hot by hauling in 36 catches for 571 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings have resurrected their season over recent weeks. The club was 1-4 when it placed Jefferson on injured reserve and now sits at 5-4 following four straight victories.Minnesota is rolling with quarterback Joshua Dobbs in Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints. The journeyman signal-caller replaced Jaren Hall in last week's contest after the rookie quarterback suffered a concussion. Dobbs, who the Vikings acquired five days prior to the game, threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL league leaders betting: Who will top the 3 offensive yards categories?
The 2023 NFL season is already halfway done. There's no better time to take a look at the odds for league leaders in passing yards, rushing yards, and receiving yards to see which players have the best chance at finishing at the top in the three categories. Most Passing YardsPlayerOddsCurrent Pass Yds.Tua Tagovailoa+2252609Patrick Mahomes+2602442Josh Allen+7002423Jared Goff+10002174Justin Herbert+12002026Jalen Hurts+14002347Sam Howell+14002471C.J. Players priced +5000 and above are not listed. The Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa leads the NFL in passing yards and is the betting favorite to remain there through Week 18. Tagovailoa got off to a blistering start with 466 yards through the air in Week 1 and didn't look back. He's remained ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Co. since, but the gap is shrinking.Mahomes led the NFL in passing yards last year with 5,250 and could easily chase down Tagovailoa with a couple of big games. Both the Chiefs and Dolphins are on bye in Week 10, so they will be giving players such as Josh Allen a chance to catch up.From a betting perspective, Sam Howell at +1400 is an intriguing option since the Commanders are clearly committed to throwing the ball a ton. Howell has attempted 40 or more passes in six of his past seven games and leads the NFL in attempts by 19.Howell trails only Tagovailoa in passing yards, and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is showing no signs of reining in his quarterback . The Commanders' defense got weaker at the trade deadline as well, which means Howell could find himself in a lot of shootout-style games. Most Rushing YardsPlayerOddsCurrent Rush Yds.Christian McCaffrey+250652D'Andre Swift+800614Derrick Henry+800601Travis Etienne+800583Raheem Mostert+900605Bijan Robinson+1500517Breece Hall+1500493Kenneth Walker III+1500532Zack Moss+1500615Isiah Pacheco+2200525James Cook+2500506Joe Mixon+2500490Josh Jacobs+2500506Saquon Barkley+2500502Tony Pollard+2500474Gus Edwards+4000478Odds via theScore Bet. Players priced +5000 and above are not listed.Christian McCaffrey is the deserving favorite to lead the league in rushing. He currently holds a 37-yard edge over Zack Moss, who is slowly losing playing time to Jonathan Taylor, and a 36-yard lead over D'Andre Swift, who is on bye in Week 10.However, McCaffrey's production on the ground over his past four games doesn't compare to that of his first four. In Weeks 1-4, McCaffrey amassed 459 rushing yards, but he has only added 193 since. Yes, All-Pro tackle Trent Williams missed the last two games, but the 49ers as a whole haven't looked like themselves and are losers of three straight. Perhaps a bye week is exactly what McCaffrey needs to get back on track.Derrick Henry, who led the league in rushing in 2019 and 2020, and was second last year, is only 51 yards back of McCaffrey with the same amount of games remaining. Will Levis has rejuvenated the Titans' offense, which is relying heavily on Henry to take pressure off their rookie quarterback. One player not listed who is a huge long shot, but who needs to be considered, is Dolphins rookie De'Von Achane at +6000. He's expected to be back from injury following Miami's bye and sits at 460 rush yards on the year. In games where he received more than one carry, Achane is averaging 151.6 yards on the ground. That number is obviously unsustainable, but there's a chance he's the most explosive back in the league and could catch McCaffrey with a few more 150-yard games. Most Receiving YardsPlayerOddsCurrent Rec. Like Tagovailoa's lead, however, Hill's is also shrinking, largely because of the torrid seven-game run Brown is on.While it's hard to envision anyone tracking down these two with nine weeks remaining, CeeDee Lamb looks to be their stiffest competition. The Cowboys' top wideout has found another gear over his past three games, reeling in 466 yards worth of catches. Dallas is also past their bye week, which gives Lamb a slight edge over Stefon Diggs.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Rams signing Wentz amid Stafford injury concerns
The Los Angeles Rams are signing veteran free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz, the team announced Wednesday.Wentz's signing comes amid injury concerns with Matthew Stafford after the quarterback missed last Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers with a thumb injury. Stafford suffered a UCL sprain in his right thumb during a Week 8 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys. The L.A. stop will mark Wentz's fourth team in as many years after stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Commanders. The former 2016 No. 2 overall pick has struggled to cement himself since enjoying a hot start to his career with the Eagles. He was replaced by Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia in 2020 before the Colts and Commanders decided to cut ties in the following years after just one season.Wentz started seven games for Washington in 2022 but struggled, going 2-5 with 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions. He wasn't re-signed.The 30-year-old provides insurance if Stafford remains sidelined. L.A. went with Brett Rypien under center against the Packers last week, but he could only muster 13 completions on 28 attempts for 130 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Los Angeles waived Rypien on Tuesday, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Head coach Sean McVay said Monday he was "optimistic" that Stafford would be back after the Rams' bye week. With Wentz joining the Rams, McVay will have coached the first two picks from the 2016 NFL Draft after previously overseeing top selection Jared Goff from 2017-20.The Rams are in the midst of their bye week and hold a 3-6 record after losing three straight.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns' Garrett: 'I'm nearing my prime, the peak of my powers'
Myles Garrett is making a strong case for Defensive Player of the Year this season, but he believes his best is still to come."I think I'm nearing my prime, the peak of my powers," the Cleveland Browns defensive end told "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday. "I think it's just matching that experience and that wisdom as well as my athletic ability. Both of those being combined, I think that's really taken my game to another level."Garrett credited his teammates and Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for helping him reach the level he's at now."I've got to give credit to my teammates and Jim Schwartz because without those guys and him putting us in position to make plays, none of that's possible," Garrett said. "He's willing to line me up anywhere and try out stuff. He knows I'm going to do my thing. He's like, 'We'll get you one-on-one and you'll wreak havoc, so go do it.'"Through eight games, Garrett has tallied 9.5 sacks, eight tackles for a loss, 18 quarterback hits, and a league-high four forced fumbles. The Browns' defense currently leads the NFL in both total yards and passing yards allowed per game.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Titans' Tannehill: Being benched for Levis 'hits hard'
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill addressed head coach Mike Vrabel benching him for rookie Will Levis on Wednesday."It's hard," Tannehill said, per team reporter Jim Wyatt. "I mean, never been in this situation before, so it hits hard. Never a situation that anyone wants to be in. But it's the situation I'm in, so I gotta walk through it."Levis, the No. 33 pick in April's draft, was named the team's starter moving forward on Tuesday. The 24-year-old has thrown for 500 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception through two starts while Tannehill has been nursing an ankle injury.Tannehill says he's focused on being the best teammate he can be."You know I want to handle the situation with class, right?" said Tannehill, according to reporter Paul Kuharsky. "It's not a fun situation to be in, but I want to be a pro and handle it with class and still be a guy that people can look to."Tannehill, 35, is in the final season of a four-year, $118-million deal that he signed with the Titans in 2020. The veteran has completed 62% of his attempts for 1,128 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions in six games this campaign. The Texas A&M product added that he's willing to assist and mentor Levis as he takes over the starting job."(Levis) has done some good things, obviously," said Tannehill, per Wyatt. "Came in and played really well the first game and did some good things last game as well. Gonna be here to answer any questions he has and try to help him out along the way."Tannehill will operate as Levis' backup once healthy. The club also has 2022 third-rounder Malik Willis on the roster.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
