Giants' DeVito to start Week 10 vs. Cowboys
New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito will start the team's Week 10 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Brian Daboll announced Wednesday. This will be the undrafted rookie's first career start. He'll replace Daniel Jones, who suffered a torn ACL last week against the Las Vegas Raiders.DeVito has filled in for injured Giants quarterbacks in two games this season. He stepped in for Tyrod Taylor in Week 8 against the New York Jets, where he threw for negative-1 yard on seven attempts. The rookie signal-caller was forced into last Sunday's contest against the Raiders following Jones' injury. He had more success than in his first game, throwing for 175 yards on 15 completions with one touchdown and two interceptions.DeVito was the starting quarterback at Illinois last year before entering the NFL. He went 8-5 in 13 starts while tossing for 2,650 yards with 14 touchdowns and five interceptions.New York signed veteran quarterback Matt Barkley to the active roster on Wednesday to be DeVito's backup. Barkley has spent time with 12 different franchises since being selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.Jones was placed on injured reserve following the torn ACL. The Giants signed the former first-round selection to a four-year, $160-million contract last offseason. He carries a $47.1-million cap hit in 2024, according to Over the Cap.DeVito's start on Sunday will break an NFL record for the most rookie quarterbacks to start in a single campaign, with 10 different first-year signal-callers starting across the league this season. The Giants enter their game against the Cowboys with a 2-7 record.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Report: J.C. Jackson not expected to travel with Patriots to Germany
New England Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson isn't expected to travel with the team to Germany for its Week 10 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. With questions about his reliability, the Patriots decided to have him stay home, get through the bye, and return to the team for Week 12, Rapoport adds. The Maryland product didn't play in the team's first two defensive drives in Week 9 against the Washington Commanders, while cornerback Jack Jones didn't see the field until the fourth defensive series. They were benched due to "recent performance issues," a source told Jeff Howe of The Athletic.Jackson was late to the team hotel Saturday, which contributed to his benching, a source told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.Neither had an injury designation leading up to the Week 9 contest. Jackson ultimately played 53 snaps, while Jones played 30. The team is without rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez and Marcus Jones due to injuries."Everybody played. They all played," Belichick said after the game when questioned about Jackson and Jones' absences, according to Mike D'Abate of Sports Illustrated. "We played all the corners. We played all the safeties. Really, we played everyone on the defense."Jackson refused to speak with reporters after the game, while Jones left Gillette Stadium before reporters had access to the players.New England traded a 2025 sixth-round pick for a 2025 seventh-round pick and Jackson in October. He spent the first four years of his career with the Patriots before signing a five-year, $82.5-million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022.The 27-year-old has given up 16 catches on 31 targets for 192 yards and three touchdowns in five games since joining the Patriots, according to PFF.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Week 10 survivor pick: Staying in the Buckeye State
Last week's big survivor debate became a lot clearer by the weekend. Clayton Tune was confirmed as the quarterback for the Cardinals, Deshaun Watson was deemed healthy enough to play, and the point spread for the game in Cleveland extended out to Browns -13.5. Both Cleveland and the Saints won, so the decision didn't have immediate consequences. But we'll bookmark the Week 9 fork in the road for later in the season, particularly in Week 15 - assuming we're still having these conversations - when both teams become options again.Every week until we get knocked out, we've mapped two paths to make it to the end of the season undefeated. As long as one of our entries still stands, we'll use the moneylines for our picks to show the odds of making it the distance traveled along the path. Once we're out, though, we're out.We could provide a series of theoretical rules to follow - like never taking a road team - but the moneyline reflects a club's likelihood of winning each game. We can easily translate that into an implied win probability, listed in descending order in the chart below.Week 10 moneylinesTEAMMONEYLINEIMPLIED PROB. You would expect the picks to get dicier and dicier later in the season. However, there has been so much attrition with teams falling apart, like the Giants, Panthers, Cardinals, Patriots, and Rams (without Matthew Stafford). For example, we wouldn't have expected the Giants to be 16-point underdogs at Dallas. Unfortunately, we can't use the Cowboys, but it means the Commanders become a surprisingly interesting look for Week 11.We have to get there first, but the good news is we have a rejuvenated top-tier team available. We avoided the Bengals during their tough times, and now they've shown they're back in form, so picking them this week feels less like a leap of faith. The bad news is that a matchup with the Texans looked better before the season than it does now. That's because C.J. Stroud - partly due to the shrinking competition from his peers - is in the conversation as a top-10 quarterback in the league. However, if we remember that the Texans just lost at Carolina, this selection becomes easy to swallow. As far as other times to use them, the Bengals' remaining home schedule includes the Steelers, Colts, Vikings, and Browns. There are decent options in that group, but there aren't any that'll definitely be lined higher than this week's game.Of course, there's also the matter of other options - or lack thereof. The Cowboys, Ravens, Seahawks, and Bills are the other teams favored by more than a field goal this week, but all are off the board. So, availability takes some of the decision-making out of it. You're welcome to take your chances with a pick'em game or with the Bears or Packers as small home favorites, but I'll stay on I-71 and go from Cleveland to Cincinnati, backing the Bengals' current form in the hopes that we see Week 11.Pick: BengalsMatt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Ex-Bear Smith glad to be competing: 'My career is not going down the drain'
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith is thrilled to be playing for a title contender after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears.Smith told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer that had he remained in Chicago, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl in the near future."Man, it's pretty crazy thinking back to when I was initially traded," Smith said. "It was bittersweet for me, just knowing Chicago and rightfully so. But if I would've stayed there, honestly, (I) wouldn't have been able to compete for a title any time soon. And then when I came over here, it took me a while, like a couple of weeks, to really realize how stacked this team was, as well as how many good people there are on this team, and how they just bring in truly good people."And when I just think about it from the perspective of having the opportunity to compete for one year in and year out with the talent we have. Man, it makes me so happy, just knowing my career is not going down the drain, in the sense of playing somewhere where I'm not truly competing for a title."Smith requested a trade from the Bears prior to the start of the 2022 season after the two sides were unable to agree to a contract extension. He was then dealt to the Ravens in October 2022.The Ravens currently sit atop the AFC North at 7-2 and are among the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season, while the Bears are 2-7.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. McCarthy downplays Cooks' limited usage: 'I don't play fantasy football'
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has grown impatient with inquiries into the team's usage of Brandin Cooks after the wide receiver produced one catch for 7 yards in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles."I don't play fantasy football," McCarthy said, according to The Athletic's Jon Machota. "We have game plans, and I think it's important, and this is a challenge for guys because our system is built on making the quarterback successful. That's the way this passing game is taught. It's the way I've learned it. It's the way it has always been the last 30 years.""Yes, I'd love to see everybody get the ball," McCarthy added. "But when you throw for (374) yards and you got to come in here and answer questions about someone not getting the ball - come on, I don't think that's a real evaluation."After failing to bring Cooks in prior to last year's trade deadline, Dallas acquired the veteran wideout in March by sending fifth- and sixth-round picks to the Houston Texans.Cooks has started six of seven games, missing a single outing due to a knee injury. The 30-year-old wideout is on pace to record career lows with 2.4 catches per game. He's posted 17 catches on 29 targets for 165 yards and two scores so far this season. The 2014 first-round pick recorded six seasons with 1,000 or more yards during his 10 years in the league.Cooks' yardage totals have gradually declined over the past three seasons; he recorded 1,150 yards in 2020 compared to 699 in 2022.Star receiver CeeDee Lamb has 824 yards this year and is averaging 14.5 yards per catch to go along with three touchdowns. Tight end Jake Ferguson and wideout Michael Gallup are among the other pass-catchers to have featured in the offense over Cooks recently. Cooks is fifth on the team in most receiving statistics, including targets (29).Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Martavis Bryant returns to NFL, signs with Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are signing newly reinstated free-agent receiver Martavis Bryant, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.Bryant, who was reinstated last Saturday by commissioner Roger Goodell, last appeared in the NFL in 2018 as a member of the then-Oakland Raiders.A fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft, the 6-foot-4 receiver made a name for himself early in his career for his physical attributes and speed. He spent four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, averaging 15.2 yards per reception and catching 17 touchdowns. The Steelers traded him to the Raiders ahead of the 2018 season. In his lone campaign with the team, he caught 19 passes for 266 yards across eight games.Bryant's career was interrupted multiple times due to violations of the league's substance abuse policy. He missed the first four games of the 2015 season and the entire 2016 campaign due to suspensions. He was banned indefinitely at the end of 2018.During his time away from the NFL, Bryant was signed by the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Elk of the CFL but didn't appear in any games. He briefly played in the seven-on-seven indoor Fan Controlled Football league and in the XFL as a member of the Vegas Vipers.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Rodgers: I was joking when I said I'd return in a few weeks
Aaron Rodgers won't be returning in just a few weeks after all.Cameras caught the New York Jets quarterback telling Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James "give me a few weeks" after Monday Night Football when James asked about his potential return. However, Rodgers clarified that he was kidding and didn't know the conversation would be captured."I didn't realize that was gonna get caught there," Rodgers said Tuesday on the "Pat McAfee Show." "I mean, obviously, that was said with a little tongue in cheek there. It'd be nice to be able to be back in a couple weeks, but that's probably not anywhere near a realistic timeline. ... It could be a few, it could be a lot. It's more of a phrase that didn't have a specific timetable."I said it smiling, joking. ... Obviously, it's gonna be more than a couple weeks."
NFL betting analysis: Best, worst teams ATS at halfway point
We've made it to the halfway point of the NFL season. Time flies, doesn't it?Looking at the conventional standings is a great way to figure out which teams are good and which teams are not. But for bettors, a team's record doesn't tell the full story of how well it's actually performing versus expectations.Let's take a look at the best and worst teams against the spread to see if there are any noticeable standouts through Week 9.Teams above .500 ATSTeamATS RecordActual RecordLions6-2-06-2Jaguars6-2-06-2Eagles5-2-28-1Ravens6-3-07-2Chiefs6-3-07-2Dolphins6-3-06-3Cowboys5-3-05-3Vikings5-3-15-4Steelers5-3-05-3Buccaneers5-3-03-5Bengals4-3-15-3Browns4-3-15-3Jets4-3-14-4Seahawks4-3-15-3Colts5-4-04-5The Lions and Jaguars have the best records against the spread, mirroring their actual 6-2 records.Similarly, most of the top teams' ATS records resemble their actual records. Since the top six-to-seven teams on the above list were likely favored in the majority of their games thus far, any win by a decent margin often meant they covered the spread. The Eagles hold the best record in the NFL at 8-1 but haven't won by the margin that the betting market expected. The Eagles have five wins in one-score games and their only loss was at the hands of the Jets.A surprise name in this group is the Buccaneers, who are 3-5 on the season but flip that record against the spread. Expectations were extremely low for the Bucs following Tom Brady's retirement and Baker Mayfield's selection as his replacement. However, Mayfield is playing well and giving the Bucs a chance most weeks. Time will tell if Tampa Bay can continue to outpace the betting market.Teams at .500 or worse ATSTeamATS RecordActual RecordPackers4-4-03-5Texans4-4-04-4Chargers4-4-04-4Rams4-4-13-649ers4-4-05-3Titans4-4-03-5Commanders4-4-14-5Cardinals4-5-01-8Raiders4-5-04-5Bears3-5-12-7Bills3-6-05-4Broncos2-5-13-5Saints2-6-15-4Giants2-6-12-7Falcons2-7-04-5Patriots2-7-02-7Panthers1-6-11-7The usual group of suspects populate the list of teams at or below .500 against the spread. The Rams and Bears are slightly outperforming the betting market's expectations, but they don't come close to what the Cardinals have accomplished through nine weeks.Arizona is a respectable 4-5 ATS despite holding the league's worst record at 1-8. Josh Dobbs, whom the Cardinals shipped to Minnesota at the deadline, was a big reason for Arizona's success. The betting market clearly had no faith in Dobbs or the rest of the Cardinals' roster, but they put up good fights early in the season. They lost one-score games to the Commanders and Giants, beat the Cowboys, and then hung tough on the road against the Ravens. It will be interesting to see how the betting market reacts to the return of Kyler Murray. Two Super Bowl hopefuls are also struggling against the spread: the 49ers and the Bills. The 49ers lost three straight heading into their Week 8 bye, all games they were favored in. They are 1-3 ATS on the road and face a tough opponent in the Jaguars in Jacksonville in Week 10.The Bills are 3-6 ATS despite their 5-4 record and plus-80 point differential, which is the second-highest in the league. When Buffalo wins, it usually wins by a lot. The Bills beat the Dolphins, Raiders, and Commanders by 28 or more points, but that was all in the first four games of the year. They haven't covered a spread since Week 4 and will need to beat the Broncos by eight or more when they host Denver in Week 10.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Titans name Levis starting QB; Tannehill to be backup
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced Will Levis as the team's starting quarterback going forward, according to Ben Arthur of Fox Sports."We're gonna go with Will," Vrabel said. "We think that's the best opportunity for our football team right now and see where he's at. I think Ryan (Tannehill) will progress through here this week ... to be a backup for us and prepare as a starter."Levis has started the last two games for the Titans as Tannehill has been recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in Week 7. The 24-year-old Levis is 1-1 in two starts, throwing for 500 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.Tennessee's offense exploded in Levis' first start. The team racked up 375 yards of total offense against an Atlanta Falcons defense ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed per game. It was the second-highest yardage output from the Titans' offense this season.Tannehill started the first six games, going 2-4 while throwing for 1,128 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions. The veteran signal-caller has been the starting quarterback for Tennessee since midway through the 2019 campaign. The 35-year-old Tannehill signed a four-year, $118-million contract with the team in March 2020. He has a $36-million cap hit in 2023, according to Over the Cap. He's set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.Tennessee selected Levis with the 33rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He was the starting quarterback for Kentucky his last two years in college, throwing for 5,232 yards and 43 touchdowns in 24 games. The Titans will face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 9 betting market report: How bettors perceived all 32 teams
What do we make of the Texans' 39-37 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday? The line - Houston -2.5 - barely moved all week before the result came down to the Texans (correctly) kneeling the conversion after their game-winning score.Beyond C.J. Stroud seemingly sealing Offensive Rookie of the Year with his 470-yard performance, the thing we'll remember is how the Texans dealt with being without a kicker after Ka'imi Fairbairn's first-half injury. It's easy to argue that Houston didn't cover because the team didn't have a kicker, but removing the risk of a Tampa Bay block and return for two points to tie would be reason enough to kneel anyway. The Texans also had to go for three other two-point conversions earlier in the game without Fairbairn. They made just one, scoring two out of an expected three total points. However, those blaming the missing kicker for not covering aren't factoring in the Texans' touchdown after Stroud found Dalton Schultz on fourth-and-8 - a situation that would normally see Houston kick a field goal. The reality is the Texans blew the cover when they gave up a 10-play, 61-yard touchdown drive to Baker Mayfield that gave the Bucs a four-point lead. It's a worthwhile reminder that Houston almost lost a week after being beaten in Carolina. How ratings workEvery week, we'll look at what the betting market thinks of each team based on the closing lines from that week's games. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread, with the specific number being the percentage chance that the team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. Ratings aren't rankings. The closing line is considered a better reflection of a team's value than one game. The range column is my evaluation of what each team is capable of. It's our job as handicappers to determine where, within its range, a team will play based on factors like on-field matchups and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider the range a team may have.Market ratings and our rangeTEAMRATINGRANGEEagles7260-8049ers7160-80Chiefs7060-80Cowboys6960-80Dolphins6955-75Ravens6955-75Bills6555-75Bengals6440-75Lions6150-70Chargers5850-70Jaguars5745-65Browns5740-60Saints5340-60Seahawks5240-60Falcons4435-55Steelers4440-60Broncos4335-55Texans4225-45Patriots4135-55Jets4030-50Packers4035-55Titans4035-55Commanders3835-55Colts3825-45Buccaneers3830-50Vikings3735-55Giants3625-45Rams3230-55Raiders3130-50Panthers2625-45Bears2520-40Cardinals1520-40Money came in steadily throughout the week on Miami, right up until the kick-off in Germany, making the Dolphins and Chiefs a virtual pick'em. We rarely get to see two similarly rated teams on a literal neutral site, so it was surprising that those teams would be considered equal.Remember how we thought it was an overreaction that the Titans were dropped as low as they were before Will Levis' debut against the Falcons? It took that one game before Tennessee was put right back to where the team usually traffics - in the 40s.The Saints beat the Colts, and their rating went up. The Bears lost handily to the Chargers, and their rating went down. It was pretty standard stuff, but it created a line that asked if New Orleans could cover a two-score spread. The team's answer: "Nah."In this week's quarterback injury roundup, the Rams' rating got knocked down to 32/100 with Matthew Stafford out. This is in keeping with where they finished last season without Stafford. We haven't seen the Vikings without Kirk Cousins for a while, but Kevin O'Connell might be so good at coordinating offenses that Minnesota can get by with everyone buying in to make it work. The Ravens' rating is at its highest point in years, but when that happens and a team still covers a spread, that's impressive. The Bengals keep moving up. If you're wondering where their ceiling should be, they finished last season at 66/100 before losing to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.We won't know until at least next week whether the Browns are overrated with Deshaun Watson back in the lineup because the Cardinals with Clayton Tune were so bad they burst through the floor of their rating range. With Kyler Murray expected back, we'll investigate the change in Arizona's rating later this week.It turns out the Raiders were the buy-low spot of the week, but it helped that Daniel Jones went out with a torn ACL early. Now we'll see the Giants' rating crater below the Cardinals' at the bottom of the NFL.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Tomlin downplays Pickens drama: I want guys who want the ball
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin described George Pickens' apparent frustration with the team as a "non-issue" after the wide receiver appeared unhappy with his role."He expresses his frustration all the time," the Steelers coach told reporters Tuesday, including Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "He wants to be significant. He wants to be a reason why we're successful. I want guys who want the football. I want guys who want to be central to our success. That's a non-issue."Pickens looked dejected on the sideline during last week's win over the Tennessee Titans as he was held to just two catches for negative-1 yard. The second-year receiver later captioned an Instagram story with "free me."Tomlin described coaching young players like Pickens as easy as "breathing" and noted that the ordeal had been blown out of proportion."I know it's a cute story for you guys, but it is a pebble in my shoe, to be quite honest with you, in terms of the things that I have to do in an effort to get this group ready to play," Tomlin said, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "This week, our focus is on the Green Bay Packers and what we're all going to do in this football game, and I can't state it any plainer than that."The Steelers relied on Pickens heavily through the opening stretch of the season. However, he's taken a backseat with the return of Diontae Johnson from IR. Pickens has caught just three passes for 21 yards over the last two games. The 5-3 Steelers welcome Green Bay to Acrisure Stadium this Sunday.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cam Newton says ex-Panthers teammate wanted $1M to swap jersey numbers
Warning: Video contains coarse languageCam Newton wore No. 1 throughout his 10 seasons with the Carolina Panthers, but it wasn't his first choice.Newton, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 draft, revealed in his latest YouTube vlog that he originally wanted to wear No. 2 in the NFL - the same number he wore during his college career at Auburn. However, No. 2 already belonged to his then-teammate Jimmy Clausen, who set an extremely high asking price."Jimbo, he's like, 'Shit, if you want it, you gotta pay for it,'" Newton recalled. "I was like, 'Cool, how much?' He said, 'A million.'"Newton said he turned down Clausen, pointing out to his fellow quarterback that some people don't even make $1 million in a lifetime. Clausen then came back to him with a slightly lower price tag of $750,000, which Newton also declined."Hung that phone up, I called the equipment manager, I said, 'I'm rocking with No. 1,'" Newton said. "I made an oath to myself, I said, 'That will be the last time Jimmy Clausen will ever be heard of in Carolina.'"
NFL Power Rankings - Week 10: Each team's best moment so far
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. This week, we identify each team's best moment during the season's first half:1. Philadelphia Eagles (8-1) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious rank: 1A.J. Brown making history. Last year's Brown trade keeps getting better for the Eagles. The star wideout reached another landmark in 2023, becoming the first NFL player to ever catch 125-plus yards in six straight games. He achieved the feat during another stellar game in Week 8 versus the Commanders.2. Baltimore Ravens (7-2)Previous rank: 2Thrashing the Lions. The Ravens put on an absolute show during their biggest test so far, blowing out the Lions 38-6 during Week 7. On the occasion, the AFC North club topped 500 total yards for the first time since 2021.3. Kansas City Chiefs (7-2)Previous rank: 4Defense coming up clutch in Germany. We're used to Kansas City standing out on offense, but it's also been a force defensively this year. The defense stepped up versus Miami in Week 9, forcing a Tyreek Hill fumble before lateraling it en route to a wild 59-yard touchdown.
Jerry Jones content with 5-3 Cowboys: 'I'll take where we are right now'
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is content with where the team is through eight games."I'll take where we are right now," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, according to Richie Whitt of Sports Illustrated. "And that's with a chance to get to the (Super Bowl)."Dallas fell to 5-3 after a 28-23 Week 9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The defeat drops the Cowboys to 2.5 games back of the NFC East lead.Down five points with under a minute left, Dallas drove down to the Eagles' 6-yard line with the chance to win the game. Quarterback Dak Prescott was sacked on first down, which put the team out of range to score a touchdown. Two offensive drives before the Cowboys' final push, Prescott ran out of bounds on the two-point conversion, which was crucial to the overall outcome of the contest. If he was able to score, Dallas could've kicked a field goal on the final drive to tie the game."That was a disappointing deal," Jones said of the play. "Five minutes after the game, I was about as disappointed as you could imagine. It really hadn't dawned on me how close we were to winning that game."Jones added: "I'd like to be there every time, with a chance to win with 30 seconds left," he said. "I'll take that, and we'll get most of them. Our tight end will get in there more times than not. And Dak will get it in there more times than not. I've never seen him step out of bounds, not once."Dallas ranks in the top six in points scored per game and points per contest allowed. Jets' Saleh: MNF loss far from Zach Wilson's worst game
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh doesn't see Monday's game as a step in the wrong direction for Zach Wilson, who didn't lead any touchdown drives and lost two fumbles during a 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers."I don't know if you can say step back," Saleh said postgame, according to the New York Post. "Obviously, he's going to want some things that he wishes we could've done better. It's just a little bit of everything. One of those bizarre games ... Just a self-inflicted wound."Was it his best game? Obviously not. Was it his worst game? No, I'm not going to even say it was close to his worst game."Wilson was sacked eight times, the most in a game for him this season. The former No. 2 pick also completed 33 of 49 attempts for 263 yards, good for an 80.6 passer rating. Wilson's 17.9 QBR against the Chargers was his second-lowest of the season, according to ESPN.The Jets, who dropped to 4-4 with the loss, have now only scored three offensive touchdowns in their last four games. Running back Breece Hall said Monday that every player in New York's offense has to "grow up," adding that the team can't have "one or two people killing the play," according to SNY's Connor Hughes. The 24-year-old Wilson, who became New York's starting quarterback this year after Aaron Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury in Week 1, also expressed his frustrations."I feel like I'm a different player," Wilson said Monday, according to SNY. "I feel like I'm in the best position I've ever felt mentally and my understanding of the game. I feel like I'm ready to be out there and competing, so that's what's so frustrating. Just not getting things done."Wilson has failed to meet the sky-high expectations surrounding him since he entered the NFL in 2021, which led to the Jets - owners of an elite defense - acquiring Rodgers in a trade from the Green Bay Packers last offseason.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ravens' Harbaugh: 'No doubt' AFC North is NFL's best division
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is well aware of the gauntlet that is the AFC North."It's really awesome that we have a great division," Harbaugh said Monday, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. "It's the best division. It's proven. We all know what happens when we play each other."Led by quarterback Lamar Jackson and a stifling defense, the Ravens have been one of the NFL's most dominant teams in 2023. Baltimore blew out the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9 to improve to 7-2, good for first place in the AFC North - the only division featuring four teams with a winning record. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals - all of whom have posted a 5-3 record - would all make the playoffs if the season ended today. No division has sent four clubs to the postseason since the realignment into eight divisions in 2002.

Chase Young happy to land with 49ers: 'I'm in a building with winners'
Chase Young has only been a member of the 49ers for a few days, but the defensive end said he's already impressed with what he's seen in San Francisco."Just the culture, the vibe is a lot different. I definitely know that I'm in a building with winners," Young said Monday, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.He added: "Just the players. The spirit in the locker room, the spirit of the coaches, it's just different. It's kind of the same thing as Ohio State where you're expected to win."The Commanders sent Young to the 49ers last week in exchange for a compensatory third-round pick in 2024. The Ohio State product took the NFL by storm when he entered the league as the 2020 No. 2 overall pick and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year. However, he hasn't replicated that success, with injuries limiting him to only 12 appearances in 2021 and 2022 combined.A healthy Young had a strong start to the 2023 season in Washington, though, amassing 15 tackles (six for loss), nine QB hits, and five sacks."I wasn't mad," he said when asked about his first reaction to the trade. The 24-year-old joined a stacked defense in San Francisco that features reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, a former teammate of Young at Ohio State."Even in college, we never thought that we'd be able to play with each other, so it's a blessing," Young said, adding that Bosa called him five minutes after learning about the trade.Coming off a bye, the 5-3 49ers will try to snap their three-game losing streak in Week 10 against the 6-2 Jacksonville Jaguars. Cardinals' Murray set to return Sunday vs. Falcons
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is set to start Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons barring any issues in practice, head coach Jonathan Gannon said Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Murray hasn't played since he tore his ACL in Week 13 of the 2022 season. The dual-threat quarterback began this season on the physically unable to perform list as he rehabbed the injury.Gannon said the team will activate Murray on Wednesday, NFL Network's Omar Ruiz reports. Murray needs to be activated this week to be available for the remainder of this season.Arizona has struggled to produce on offense without Murray under center. The team ranks 26th in offensive yards per game and 31st in passing yards per game this season.Atlanta boasts the No. 6-ranked defense in yards allowed per game. Despite its ability to prevent opponents from racking up yardage, the team is ranked 18th in scoring defense. The Cardinals are 1-8 and would own the No. 1 pick in the draft if the season ended today.Joshua Dobbs began the season as Arizona's starting quarterback before he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings at the deadline. Rookie Clayton Tune started the 27-0 defeat to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, completing 11 of 20 passes for just 58 yards and a pair of interceptions.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals' Chase injures back vs. Bills: 'Got worse as the game went on'
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase sustained a back injury during his club's 24-18 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.Chase said Monday the injury "got worse as the game went on" and that he's "pretty sore just moving around," according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. The 23-year-old didn't specify when he suffered the injury. However, Chase fell hard on his back after leaping for a deep ball midway through the third quarter. He was slow to return to his feet and appeared to receive treatment on the sideline following the drive.Chase has until next Sunday to get healthy to avoid missing the Bengals' Week 10 contest against the Houston Texans. The LSU product said he's focused on supporting his teammates and returning to the field."Only thing I can do is get healthy for the team," Chase said, per Dehner.Chase has picked up his production in recent weeks, topping 80 receiving yards in three of Cincinnati's last four games, including 192 yards in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals. His 697 yards, 64 receptions, and four receiving touchdowns lead the Bengals.Trenton Irwin and sixth-round rookie Andrei Iosivas could see increased roles behind Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd if Chase misses time.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings' Akers done for season with torn Achilles
Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers tore his left Achilles tendon in the team's 31-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed Monday. The 5-foot-10 tailback tore his right Achilles tendon in 2021 as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.Akers joined the Vikings in September via trade after spending the first three seasons and three games of his career with the Rams. The 24-year-old rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns this season. 138 of those yards and one of the touchdowns came in his six games with the Vikings.Minnesota has leaned on Alexander Mattison as its lead back with Akers playing a backup role this campaign. The club released longtime starter Dalvin Cook in the offseason, and he later signed with the New York Jets.Ty Chandler, who has just eight carries for 42 yards this year, could step into an increased role with Akers' injury. The only other running back on the active roster is Kene Nwangwu, who has yet to take an offensive snap this year.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Falcons to start Heinicke again, will re-evaluate QBs during bye week
The Atlanta Falcons will start veteran quarterback Taylor Heinicke over Desmond Ridder again in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, head coach Arthur Smith said Monday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Smith added that he plans to re-evaluate the starting quarterback position during their Week 11 bye.Heinicke's first start for the Falcons was Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He threw for 268 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and the Falcons looked set for a victory until the Vikings scored a game-winning touchdown in the final 30 seconds.Atlanta went away from Ridder midway through the team's Week 8 loss to the Tennessee Titans, removing Ridder despite the fact he cleared concussion protocol and inserting Heinicke. Smith later announced that Ridder would serve as the backup for Week 9.Ridder has struggled to take the next step since his 2022 rookie season, in which he posted a 2-2 record as a starter. Browns' Wills to IR with MCL injury, will return this season
Cleveland Browns left tackle Jedrick Wills will be placed on injured reserve after suffering an MCL injury in Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter.Wills will be required to miss a minimum of four games but is expected to return this season. The veteran was carted off with an air cast on his right leg, leading to speculation that he was done for the rest of the campaign. The 24-year-old also has a low-grade PCL sprain and bone bruises, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Wills' return timeline is reportedly expected to be around six weeks.James Hudson could be Wills' replacement moving forward. The Browns may also move right tackle Dawand Jones over to left tackle.Cleveland is already down top right tackle Jack Conklin, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opener.Wills has started 53 games - including all eight to begin this season - since being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Daniel Jones out for season with torn ACL
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will miss the remainder of the season after an MRI confirmed a torn ACL, head coach Brian Daboll announced Monday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Jones exited Sunday's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in the second quarter following a non-contact injury. On the play, Jones dropped back to pass only to collapse in an empty pocket. He immediately grabbed at his right knee after going down. The Week 9 contest was Jones' first game in nearly a month after he missed the last three contests with a neck injury. The season-ending knee injury means the Giants quarterback will have suited up for just six of a possible 17 games since signing a four-year, $160-million contract extension this past offseason.Jones is due a fully guaranteed base salary of $35.5 million in 2024, per Spotrac. The 26-year-old has struggled mightily since his breakout 2022 campaign. Jones has thrown for two touchdowns to six interceptions while putting up a career-low 70.5 passer rating. With Jones lost for the season, New York will likely turn to undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito until veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor returns from injured reserve. The Giants, who made a playoff appearance last season, are 2-7 and own the league's lowest-scoring offense (11.2 points per game).Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. MNF best bets: Jets look to land 4-game win streak
All's well with the Chargers, everybody! Nothing to see here.At least, that's what the betting market seems to be trying to tell us after 2-4 Los Angeles beat the 2-5 Bears at home last Sunday night. If you are what your record says you are, as former Jets head coach Bill Parcells famously said, the now 3-4 Chargers visiting 4-3 New York should be a good matchup on Monday night.Of course, while the Chargers are being regarded as a playoff-caliber team, with two of three wins coming over Tyson Bagent and Aidan O'Connell, the Jets don't get any love at all for their best wins - deemed flukes - over the Bills and Eagles.Chargers @ Jets (+3.5, 40.5)It doesn't mean the Chargers can't cover, of course, but this point spread - and its corresponding moneyline - is too high. It's our job to figure out why that's the case before we confidently put a bet in.Is it injury-related?That depends on the importance you put on Connor McGovern. The Jets center/guard was placed on IR last week with a knee injury, which weakens the interior of their offensive line. Is his absence enough to push a line that should be below -3 to above that key number?Speaking of interior offensive linemen, the Chargers have been without their star center, Corey Linsley, and performed below expectations against the Raiders, Cowboys, and Chiefs before relying on checkdowns to create offense against the Bears. Part of the reason that it was all Austin Ekeler all the time last week was because L.A. is down another receiver. Joshua Palmer joined Mike Williams on IR this weekend. That leaves Keenan Allen matched up with Sauce Gardner on Monday night. If it's not injury-related, it's market sentiment pushing the Chargers to this level of favoritism. That means bettors are buying L.A. after one good performance - bumping the Chargers' estimated market rating above 60/100 for the first time all season - or selling the Jets to below 40/100. That would be an odd way to think about a team that's managed three consecutive wins. The Chargers' offense is overrated in its current form, and now they face a Jets defense that's improved since a slow start and is now worth its reputation as a top-five unit. Meanwhile, the Jets should be able to do enough against the Chargers' 26th-ranked defense by DVOA to keep this close, if not win outright.Pick: Jets (+3.5)Breece Hall: Over 20.5 receiving yardsHall's targets, receptions, yards, and longest reception have increased progressively over the last four games. That's why this line has been bet up from 17.5 to 20.5. However, that might not be enough against the Chargers, who allow the second-most receptions (6.6) and yards (54.9) to opposing tailbacks.Justin Herbert: Under 253.5 passing yardsIf the Jets take away the Chargers' throws to Ekeler and cover Allen with Sauce, there's very little to get excited about for Herbert's production. Plus, L.A.'s the favorite against a Jets offense unlikely to pile up points early, so the game script shouldn't lead to the Chargers having to throw constantly to catch up. Going against a defense allowing just 5.7 yards per pass means Herbert would have to throw more than 40 times, but if this game maintains a neutral state - within one score - that seems unlikely.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Report: Giants' Jones feared to have suffered significant knee injury
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is feared to have suffered a significant knee injury, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Initial tests show a potential torn ACL, Rapoport adds. He'll undergo an MRI to get a clear picture of the injury.Jones suffered what appeared to be a non-contact injury during a second-quarter pass attempt against the Las Vegas Raiders. He eventually left for the locker room and did not return.
Key takeaways and analysis from Week 9 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.Rookie of the Year Decade Cooper Neill / Getty Images Sport / GettyC.J. Stroud is making the draft process look like a joke.Widely considered to be the consensus No. 2 behind Bryce Young, the Ohio State product seemingly didn't generate much consideration for the top spot in this year's first round. In fact, as rumor season picked up and Stroud scored low on a supposedly important cognition test, there was even talk that he could drop further. The Texans evidently didn't share that view and were content to take their quarterback of the future second overall before trading up to No. 3 for Will Anderson. How's that for a franchise-altering decision?Stroud hasn't just been the best rookie quarterback this season. That race, with Young struggling in Carolina, isn't remotely close. After a historic performance in Sunday's win over the Buccaneers, it's time to consider whether there's ever been a better first-year signal-caller.The 22-year-old has looked like a pro from the jump. He opened his debut season by going 192 passes without an interception, shattering Dak Prescott's record of 176. His first interception came in a Week 6 win over the Saints, and he hasn't had another since.Stroud was on another level this week, completing a career-high 71.4% of his passes for a rookie-record 470 yards and five touchdowns. The final score was the capper on a six-play, 75-yard drive in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter, with a 15-yard strike to Tank Dell sealing the win and pushing Houston to 4-4.It was hard to take issue with much of anything in Stroud's tape at Ohio State. He demonstrated all the arm talent, touch, and poise you could possibly want from a top quarterback, and an unbelievable CFP semifinal game against Georgia showed he could create outside of structure, too. But there were concerns about him doing that consistently in the NFL, and there are always overblown questions about whether Ohio State quarterbacks have it too easy.It seems like we have our answer. Stroud was the best quarterback in this draft, he's the best rookie quarterback since at least Dak Prescott, and he's well on his way to being one of the best in a league filled with superstars.Stroud and the Texans are building something special.Ravens dominate on defense Michael Owens / Getty Images Sport / GettySeahawks-Ravens was supposed to be one of the best games of a day filled with blockbuster matchups. Then again, we were expecting the same thing from Baltimore's Week 7 contest against Detroit. Are you sensing a trend here? The Ravens beating the brakes off the Seahawks is the latest of many signs that this team isn't just good - it may be the NFL's very best. You know the story about the offense by now: An all-time dual-threat quarterback finally getting some help at the skill positions, and getting the chance to run a modern offense, makes this group a nightmare to defend. Lamar Jackson is once again playing like an MVP, and that alone would likely be enough to carry Baltimore deep into January. Yet the defense has somehow been even better. The Ravens had the Seahawks under siege throughout Sunday's blowout victory. Seattle's run game managed just 28 yards on 15 carries, and Geno Smith completed just 13 of 28 passes for 157 yards. The 46.4% completion rate is by far his lowest since breaking out as Seattle's starter last year.Holding the Seahawks' explosive offense to just three points and 151 total yards was this group's most dominant performance yet. Baltimore is now allowing a touchdown on only 8.7% of opponents' drives, which is the NFL's best mark since the historic 2000 Ravens, according to Ben Solak of The Ringer. We've said it here before, but it's worth repeating: Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McDonald should be flying to the top of prospective head coaching candidate lists. At this point, it seems possible that a team looking to hire McDonald could be sitting around until after the Super Bowl to do so. He'll be worth the wait.Dobbs does it again Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyJoshua Dobbs is incredible.Football fans everywhere have been conditioned to believe that quarterbacks need weeks if not months of practice and study before being able to run an NFL offense. That may well be true for most players, but we aren't talking about most players here. Dobbs once again proved to be the league's ultimate short-notice fill-in this week, leading the Vikings to a dramatic win over the Falcons.Acquired from the Cardinals ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, the veteran signal-caller was supposed to serve as the backup to Jaren Hall. But those plans went out the window when the fifth-round rookie suffered a concussion in the first quarter. It was the Dobbs show from that point forward, and he did not disappoint.Dobbs going 20 of 30 for 158 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions doesn't even begin to tell the story of his Vikings debut. He also made one big play after another in scramble mode, including a 22-yard run on fourth down late in a game-winning 75-yard touchdown drive.Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said postgame that he was essentially translating play calls and mapping things out for Dobbs on the fly. As it turns out, he didn't even get a practice rep during a week dedicated to preparing Hall for his first NFL start.
Report: Eagles' Goedert suffered forearm fracture vs. Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert suffered a fracture in his forearm in the team's Week 9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.Goedert will undergo an MRI on Monday to see if there's any further damage, Schefter adds. The 28-year-old left Sunday's contest after getting tackled by a Cowboys defender in the third quarter following a 28-yard reception.
Carroll 'concerned' about Geno Smith's turnover streak
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is worried about Geno Smith's recent run of turnover-filled games."Yeah, I am concerned about that," Carroll said Sunday after his team's 37-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN.Smith finished with 13 completions on 28 attempts for 157 yards with zero touchdowns and two turnovers. The Seahawks' offense was outgained 515-151 and only had six first downs. The 32-year-old overthrew wide receiver Tyler Lockett early in the second quarter and fumbled three drives later, leading to a Ravens field goal right before halftime.
New Vikings QB Dobbs needed O'Connell to translate calls during huddles
Six days ago, Joshua Dobbs was benched by the Arizona Cardinals. On Sunday, he was crucial in helping the Minnesota Vikings win their fourth straight game. The journeyman quarterback revealed Sunday that he didn't take any reps with the Vikings' first-team offense at practice before leading Minnesota to a 31-28 upset win over Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. The Vikings started rookie Jaren Hall versus the Falcons after starter Kirk Cousins went down with an Achilles injury last week. However, Hall exited the contest after suffering a concussion in the first quarter, leaving Dobbs to take over only days after joining Minnesota as part of a trade from the Cardinals.Dobbs, who admitted he doesn't know most of his new teammates' full names, added that Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell essentially had to translate his offensive calls and map out plays during the huddles against Atlanta, per Alec Lewis of The Athletic."It's like if you were taking AP Spanish all year, you showed up on Wednesday and someone told you you have an AP French exam on Sunday. That's what was going on out there," Dobbs said of his in-game communication with O'Connell, according to Jeff Wald of Fox 9.Dobbs, who started two games for the Tennesse Titans in 2022, joined the Cardinals this year and made eight starts. There, the 28-year-old completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,569 yards and eight touchdowns against five interceptions. He also scored three TDs on the ground."In this league, there is never an excuse for your circumstance," Dobbs said Sunday, according to Seifert. "I learned that from (Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin). Usually, people don't care about your circumstance. They just want to see you succeed given the circumstances you've given."The 2017 fourth-round pick finished his Vikings debut having completed 20 of 30 pass attempts for 158 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead 6-yard TD pass to Brandon Powell with 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cap an 11-play drive. He also rushed for 66 yards and a score, becoming the first player in NFL history to account for at least three touchdowns in back-to-back weeks with two different teams, according to Jason Wolf of USA Today.Minnesota defeated Atlanta despite playing without its No. 1 quarterback, wide receiver, and left tackle. O'Connell appreciates how his team pulled together in unusual circumstances."I don't know if I've been a part of one like that," O'Connell said postgame. "What's inside of each and every guy in that locker room and the feelings they have towards one another, these are the days that cement why you believe what you believe as a coach. I'll remember this one for a really long time. Everybody in that locker room got a game ball."The 5-4 Vikings will host the New Orleans Saints in Week 10.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: McDaniels irked by Pierce citing Pats' SB loss to Giants in meeting
Ex-Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels was irked by a comment new interim coach Antonio Pierce made about the 2007 New England Patriots' Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants during a team meeting prior to his firing, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports.During a gathering to air grievances in which players "unloaded" on McDaniels, the former coach reportedly asked Pierce to speak on his behalf.Pierce apparently spoke about the need to create a team culture, referencing how the Giants, his former team, famously ended the undefeated run of McDaniels' Patriots in Super Bowl XLII because they believed they could beat anyone. After the meeting concluded, McDaniels reportedly approached Pierce and said, "Don't ever talk about the Patriots like that."

Sweat signs 4-year extension reportedly worth $98M after trade to Bears
The Chicago Bears signed defensive end Montez Sweat to a four-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday. The deal is worth $98 million and includes approximately $72.8-million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 2019 first-rounder was dealt from the Washington Commanders to the Bears at this year's trade deadline for a second-round pick.Sweat racked up 35.5 sacks, 47 tackles for loss, 85 quarterback hits, and nine forced fumbles in 67 career games with Washington. The 6-foot-6, 262-pounder offers plenty of pass-rush capability to a team that's struggled to get after opposing quarterbacks. Carolina could use the franchise tag on the 25-year-old if the two sides are unable to negotiate an extension. The Los Angeles Rams reportedly offered Carolina two first-round picks last year.Burns leads the Panthers with five sacks and seven tackles for loss entering Sunday's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. The Florida State product led the team with 12.5 sacks and had 17 tackles for loss in 2022.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Giants place Darren Waller, Tyrod Taylor on IR
The New York Giants have placed tight end Darren Waller and quarterback Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve, according to Field Yates of ESPN.Waller suffered the injury in last week's loss to the New York Jets. He was forced to leave the contest after playing only 17 snaps and didn't return. Waller was coming off his best game of the season as he totaled seven catches on eight targets for 98 yards and a touchdown in Week 7 against the Washington Commanders. The Giants sent a third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for Waller last offseason. He missed eight games and was placed on IR in 2022 with a hamstring ailment.Taylor started the Week 8 contest against the Jets before leaving the game after taking a big hit. He's gone 1-2 while throwing for 487 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions across three starts for New York this season.Quarterback Daniel Jones will return from a neck injury Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders after a three-game absence.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 9 player props: Jonathan Taylor turns back the clock?
If he doesn't see the field again this season, Desmond Ridder's last act of philanthropy before being pulled was getting over his rushing yards total. Of course, the Patriots' desire to establish the run with Ezekiel Elliott while down two touchdowns mitigated that bit of good fortune. Another 5-5 split keeps us a game over .500 in our fun-to-follow secondary bets.Jonathan Taylor: Over 68.5 rushing yardsBack in the good old days (last year), Taylor used to be lined between 75.5 and 95.5 rushing yards when he was full steam ahead. Let's look at how he's trending since getting back on the field for the Colts.WEEK SNAPS YARDS51018633197357584395Now Taylor faces a Panthers run defense allowing 4.7 yards per carry this season. On the road, look for Taylor to get his heaviest workload of the campaign.Trey McBride: Over 4.5 receptions (+110)Fantasy football managers desperate for an impact player in their tight end slot have been jumping to add McBride. The 2022 second-round pick has been stuck behind veteran Zach Ertz for snaps on an offense frequently trailing. Well, now Ertz is on injured reserve, and McBride went from being on the field for around 50% of the offensive snaps to 82% last week. Sure enough, he was the check-down target, with ten catches on 14 targets. They may not be long gains, and he may not find the end zone, but as 11.5-point underdogs, the Cardinals will be looking for a still under-the-radar target for Clayton Tune.Jordan Love: Under 218.5 passing yardsThe Packers are favored against the Rams, at least until there's a verdict on Matthew Stafford's availability. The assumption is Green Bay shouldn't be in a trailing game state. It took 41 pass attempts for Love to get to 229 yards last week. In the other two high-volume games for the Packers quarterback, the team trailed big at halftime against Detroit and New Orleans. A more neutral game state should mean more reliance on the run, especially with Matt Lafleur announcing that they're "ready to cut Aaron Jones loose."D'Onta Foreman: Over 40.5 rushing yardsThe plan fell apart early last Sunday night when the Bears found themselves trailing in Los Angeles. Foreman didn't get the 15-plus carries that Chicago wants to give him to help control the line of scrimmage. The Saints got gashed by a pair of Colts tailbacks last week, so there will be ample opportunity for Foreman to angry-run his way to over 40 yards in New Orleans.Jaren Hall: Over 15.5 rushing yardsDon't tell anybody, but Hall can run the ball. The rookie out of BYU recorded a 10-plus-yard rush in 15 games over his last two college football seasons. Hall provides a different look for defending the Vikings, and head coach/play-caller Kevin O'Connell should be able to cook up a game plan to use the athleticism that Kirk Cousins doesn't have at the position.Zach Charbonnet: Over 18.5 rushing yardsAfter missing Week 7, Charbonnet came back and out-snapped Seahawks starter Kenneth Walker against the Browns last week. Five carries for 53 yards earned Charbonnet praise from Pete Carroll, who doesn't mind handing the ball off repeatedly. The Ravens lead the league in defending the pass but have been average in stopping the run.Baker Mayfield: Under 241.5 passing yardsIf a tight point spread equals a close game, there should be no need for Mayfield to throw it so many times that he has no choice but to go over his passing yard total. We should get an average number of throws against a Texans secondary that's performed above average at home, allowing just 6.1 yards per pass attempt.Mac Jones: Over 21.5 pass completionsThe Commanders traded two members of their vaunted defensive line this week, and the remaining two - Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne - are astute at clogging the middle of the line of scrimmage. We don't want to rely on Jones to provide explosive plays or even more attempts than usual. But the expectation should be that he can make drive-extending completions against a defense ranked 30th in opponents' yards per attempt.Josh Jacobs: Under 72.5 rushing yardsFacing a team they knew would want to lean on the run game last week, the Giants held Breece Hall to just 17 yards on 12 carries. With rookie Aidan O'Connell getting the start, the expectation might be that the Raiders will run it more with Jacobs. However, O'Connell won't be shy considering Las Vegas is hoping the quarterback will give the team a more efficient passing game. We'll bet against Jacobs having close to his best performance of the season.Jalen Hurts: Over 253.5 passing yardsHurts has gone over his passing yardage total in six straight games. While those totals were (mostly) shorter than this number, he would have cleared this bar had they all been lined at 253.5. Oddsmakers aren't catching up to how often, how deep, and how well Hurts has been throwing. Mix in the issue with his knee that's keeping him in the pocket and a probable 60-minute slugfest with the Cowboys, and he should make it seven overs in a row.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Players are revitalizing No. 0 in the digit's return to NFL jerseys
Roquan Smith has played the equivalent of a full season at the heart of the Ravens' defense since arriving by trade at last year's Halloween deadline. The club has gone 11-6 in Smith's outings while allowing a measly 14.9 points per game. That average would lead the NFL in most years. The move was transformative for Smith, the league's best-paid linebacker. He negotiated his own five-year, $100-million megadeal with Baltimore in the offseason. He also switched jersey numbers, dumping No. 18 to revitalize a dormant digit.Roquan Smith. Michael Owens / Getty ImagesThe NFL legalized No. 0 as a jersey option in 2023 for all players except offensive and defensive linemen. Team owners voted to abolish the ban on the nil value that dated back to the 1973 standardization of numbers by position group. Rosters got bigger over time, forcing squads to outfit more players, including some who wanted to be zeroes.Few past NFLers experienced the privilege. George Plimpton wore No. 0, a measure of his quarterbacking ability, when the "Paper Lion" author tried out for Detroit in 1963 as a journalistic experiment. Records indicate that 14 legitimate players donned the number in games before the '73 ban.Ending the half-century hiatus opened the floodgates. Zero's a coveted commodity now. Most teams are rostering a No. 0-wearer this season. These trailblazers, close to two dozen in all, reflect the wider NFL player pool. They range in age from 23 (Jakorian Bennett, Daiyan Henley, Greg Newsome) to 30 (elder statesman Adrian Amos is in his ninth year). Some have All-Pro upside, others start every Sunday, and many are cogs in the machine fighting to get on the field. The reasons they gravitated to No. 0 vary. Wearers surveyed by ESPN ahead of the season explained that the digit is novel, looks cool, resembles the letter "O" (Calvin Ridley's middle name is Orin), and has symbolic significance. Veteran pass-rusher Marcus Davenport sought a fresh start after his sack total plummeted to 0.5 in 2022. Top of mind for rookie edge rusher Byron Young were the doubters who thought he had zero chance to go pro.Panthers linebacker Brian Burns. Jared C. Tilton / Getty ImagesFalcons linebacker Lorenzo Carter sacrificed No. 9 this year to quarterback Desmond Ridder. Carter's sister, a former Portland Trail Blazers employee, pointed out that NBA stars like Damian Lillard made No. 0 iconic."Zero in athletics is held high," Carter told ESPN. "You've got to earn that number and earn your right to wear that number."Mission accomplished for the Ravens' Smith. Exhaustively influential, he ranks in the top 15 among linebackers in pass breakups, sacks, tackles, and stops, defined by PFF as a tackle that seals an offensive failure. Smith's sparkling 4.5% missed-tackle rate is a career best. Following his example, Baltimore's defense smothers all kinds of plays, ranking second in expected points added per dropback and seventh in EPA/rush, per Ben Baldwin's database.Eagles running back D'Andre Swift. Kyle Ross / Icon Sportswire / Getty ImagesExplosive playmakers sport No. 0. D'Andre Swift has rushed for the NFL's fifth-most yards and first downs behind the Eagles' smashmouth offensive line. Ridley's production runs hot and cold, but the Jaguars receiver shakes defenders downfield (15th in yards before the catch) and has flashed excellence (122 yards against the Bills) in his return from a yearlong betting suspension.
Best Week 9 total bets: Slugfest in Vegas, rivalry shooutout in Philly
We're 13-11 on total bets this season. Let's keep the train moving as we enter the back half of the NFL season. Here are Week 9's best total bets.Giants @ Raiders under 37.5 Look up "ugly football" in the dictionary and you'll find the scoreboard of last week's Giants-Jets matchup, in which the Jets squeaked out a 13-10 overtime win. You might also find scores from every game the Giants have played this season. With or without Daniel Jones, the Giants' offense is downright horrific. They have the worst scoring offense in the league, averaging 11.9 points per game. The Patriots have the next worst at 14.8 points per game. Not far behind them are the Raiders with the third-worst scoring offense. They also underwent major changes this week.Las Vegas fired head coach Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator, and the general manager late Tuesday night. Oh, and the team officially benched Jimmy Garoppolo for rookie Aidan O'Connell. Yeah, it's a dumpster fire in Sin City. These are two bad football teams who struggle to move the ball down the field and score. Points will be hard to come by on Sunday.Vikings under 16.5 pointsAfter an 0-3 start, the Vikings recovered and looked like they could emerge back into the playoff picture, winning four of their last five.Unfortunately, though, Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles last Sunday, effectively ending his season and any hope Vikings fans had about a turnaround. The Vikings traded for Josh Dobbs this week from the 1-7 Cardinals, who had announced Dobbs' benching earlier in the week. However, rookie Jaren Hall will start for Minnesota this Sunday. I'm going to fade a fifth-round quarterback who's attempted just four passes ever in the NFL.Atlanta's strength is its defense, as the team is holding opponents to 20.1 points per game. The Falcons will take advantage of a rookie quarterback and pummel the Vikings this week.Cowboys @ Eagles over 45.5The Cowboys and Eagles have the second-best and third-best offenses in the NFL, respectively. Both teams have terrific quarterback play and lethal weapons all over the field, including two of the best receivers in football - A.J. Brown on the Eagles and CeeDee Lamb on the Cowboys. The Eagles' defense, however, hasn't been as dominant. They're allowing 21.5 points per game to opponents this season and have allowed the seventh-most passing yards.Injuries to their secondary have derailed the defense. The Cowboys, on the other hand, have the fourth-best scoring defense in the league.Dallas' elite pass rush won't withstand the Eagles' unbreakable offensive line. It'll be a heavyweight battle between two division foes in a rivalry game that'll be full of fireworks and points.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Kelce: Chiefs have 'every piece' needed to be great
Travis Kelce says the Kansas City Chiefs' issues at wide receiver aren't the reason the reigning Super Bowl champions haven't been firing on all cylinders this season."This team has every piece that it needs to be great," the All-Pro tight end said Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher. "Everybody can talk about whatever they want to talk about."Kelce added: "I know that we've got a team that can put points up, and I know we've got the coaches to be able to put us in the great positions to succeed, and that's where we're moving going forward, and it just takes guys to lock in and just be ready for those big-time moments when we need them most."Kansas City boasted the league's highest-scoring offense in 2022 en route to winning the second Super Bowl title of the Patrick Mahomes era. However, the Chiefs rank only 12th in points per game in 2023.The wide receiver position has been K.C.'s biggest issue. The club has dropped 18 passes this year, the most in the NFL, according to STATS. Second-round rookie Rashee Rice leads Kansas City wide receivers with 30 receptions in eight games. No other Chiefs wideout has caught more than 19 passes or scored more than one touchdown.Despite missing the season opener with a knee injury, Kelce paces the team with 54 receptions for 583 yards and four TD catches. The Chiefs, who're coming off a loss to the Denver Broncos, have also suffered 16 turnovers this campaign, tied for the second most in the NFL."The biggest thing for us is being able to control those turnovers, being able to control the dropped passes," Kelce said. "There's a few missed assignments, and I take accountability in all this, and I think everybody in that locker room on the offensive side has taken that same approach this week."The Chiefs will now face the Miami Dolphins, who roster arguably the NFL's most dominant receiver in Tyreek Hill. It'll be K.C.'s first game against Hill since the club traded him during the 2022 offseason.Hill leads the NFL with 1,014 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Kansas City's top three wide receivers have recorded a combined 849 yards and four touchdowns this year.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Mahomes 'definitely' wants to play flag football at 2028 Olympics
Patrick Mahomes is eyeing a spot on the U.S. Olympic flag football team. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback told reporters Friday that he's interested in competing in flag football at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, provided age hasn't slowed him down by then."I definitely want to, but I've seen some of those guys play the flag football and they're a little faster than I am," Mahomes said. "I know there's not like linemen blocking for you. I'll be 31, 32 years old so if I can still move around, then I'm gonna try to get out there and throw the football around, maybe in L.A. Just don't tell Coach (Andy) Reid or (general manager Brett) Veach or anybody."Flag football was one of five new sports approved for the 2028 Summer Games last month along with cricket, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and squash.Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star tight end Rob Gronkowski have also expressed interest in playing on the U.S. flag football team.Through eight games this season, the 28-year-old Mahomes has completed 68.8% of his passes for 2,257 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc.
