New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty believes quarterback Mac Jones has what it takes to lead the offense for the foreseeable future."I'm excited for Mac," McCourty said in an interview on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football." "I think (the) sky is the limit. I think he is the future of New England. ... I think you're wrong if you don't think that. He's in that building right now doing different things, working with guys, talking to guys; that's what he wants. He wants to be that quarterback."Jones led the Patriots to a 10-7 record and a playoff spot in his rookie season. He took a step back in his second campaign, throwing for 2,997 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while going 6-8 in 14 starts.New England made a change at offensive coordinator this offseason, replacing Matt Patricia with Bill O'Brien. McCourty expects that O'Brien will help Jones flourish as a quarterback."I think Mac has all the intangibles and the things that you want in a quarterback. He's ... going into his third year, third offensive coordinator. Hopefully, (O'Brien) is there for a while, and I think you'll see the true growth."McCourty has been with the Patriots organization since 2010. The Chicago Bears are "leaning toward" moving the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Multiple clubs have approached Chicago about trading the selection, per Schefter. The Bears have quarterback Justin Fields but plenty of holes elsewhere on the roster. Trading down would give them more ammo to help build a better team around the former first-round pick."We have flexibility where if there's opportunities where if we can turn that into a lot of players that come in and help us, we can do that," Bears general manager Ryan Poles said in January, according to Schefter.Teams that fail to address their quarterback position in free agency or via trade could be looking to acquire the pick. Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo are the top free agents, whereas Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers could be available for trade. The last time the No. 1 overall pick was traded before the draft was in 2016 when the Los Angeles Rams moved up to select quarterback Jared Goff.Copyright © 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. The NFL offseason is about to pick up in a big way. Our NFL insider Jordan Schultz looks at 11 players you need to keep tabs on.Parris CampbellCampbell is a guy I really like because he can line up anywhere and fits the mold of coordinators dressing up their offenses with pre-snap motion and elite speed (he ran a 4.31 40). Still just 25, the former Ohio State star is prime for a more featured role heading into 2023. His free-agency market should reflect that, as well.Mike GesickiForget the numbers last season in Miami. Gesicki is a bona fide matchup nightmare with 80-catch potential, according to one executive I spoke with. The former second-round pick can really run, too, and has the size and hands to become a dominant red-zone threat.

Jeff Bezos has hired an investment firm to examine the possibility of a bid for the Washington Commanders, sources told the Washington Post's Mark Maske, Nicki Jhabvala, and Liz Clarke. The founder of Amazon hired Allen & Company, the same firm that handled the sales of the Denver Broncos in 2022 and the Carolina Panthers in 2018.Bezos, who owns the Washington Post, has not submitted a bid for the Commanders, but this latest move indicates he may have a high degree of interest in the team. Bezos' net worth is considered around $119 billion, which would likely allow him to outbid any competition.Current owner Dan Snyder and his wife, Tanya (co-CEO), announced last November that they had hired Bank of America Securities regarding the possible sale of the franchise. It's unclear if the Snyders would sell all or part of the team, but multiple sources told the Post they anticipate a full sale of the team. The only known bidder for the NFC East franchise is Josh Harris, who reportedly toured the team's facilities last month. The Arizona Cardinals are keeping all of their options open when it comes to deciding the future of star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins."I had a great talk with D-Hop a couple weeks ago," general manager Monti Ossenfort said Thursday during an appearance on the "Bickley and Marotta" show, according to team reporter Darren Urban. "I explained to him what my philosophy was. It was a great conversation. D-Hop has been a great player in this league for a long time. I'm excited to work with him. I think any roster decisions like that, we are in the very early stages right now."Whether it's D-Hop's situation or anyone's situation, we are in the stages of evaluating that," Ossenfort added.Hopkins will account for a $30.7-million cap hit for the 2023 season, per Over the Cap. The three-time All-Pro wideout has been the subject of trade speculation since the conclusion of his 2022 campaign. The Clemson product led the Cardinals with 717 receiving yards despite missing the first six games of last season due to a suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.Hopkins continued to thrive after being traded from the Houston Texans to the Cardinals. The five-time Pro Bowler led the team with eight scores in 2021 despite suiting up for just 10 games. If the Cardinals decide to move the talented receiver, Hopkins may no longer have a say in the matter. The 30-year-old signed a two-year, $54.5-million contract extension with Arizona in 2020. New Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken commended Lamar Jackson on Tuesday amid uncertainty over the star quarterback's future with the team."He's got an elite skill set," Monken said, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. "I think he's underrated as a passer in terms of his ability to make plays and throw it down the field. I'm no different than you. I've watched what you guys watch, and it's pretty amazing."The Ravens, however, reportedly didn't give candidates for the offensive coordinator job full assurances that Jackson would return in 2023.The former league MVP is scheduled to become a free agent and is expected to receive the franchise tag. Monken brushed off concerns that if Jackson doesn't agree to a long-term deal this offseason, he could hold out and then might struggle to learn a new offense in limited time."Sure, he'll be behind, but it's still just football," Monken said. "Sometimes we make this out to be way too much. We'll cater to what he knows and play."Monken helped Georgia win back-to-back national titles before taking the Baltimore job earlier in February. He replaces Greg Roman, who stepped down after four seasons as offensive coordinator.Jackson posted career highs in completion percentage (66.1%), passing touchdowns (36), and passer rating (113.3) during his 2019 MVP campaign. Brown had one of his best performances of the 2022 campaign, racking up 119 yards and two scores on eight receptions. The 25-year-old spent the first three years of his career with Tennessee, producing 185 receptions for 2,995 yards and 24 touchdowns in 43 games. He made his first Pro Bowl in 2020 after scoring 11 times and tallying over 1,000 yards. However, Brown had the best year of his career with Philadelphia. New Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has big plans for star quarterback Kyler Murray."If Kyler Murray isn't here, I don't take this job," Gannon told Peter King of Pro Football Talk. "I think this offense will look much different. This guy does things that it completely handcuffs you how you play defense at times. I think we can take him to another level and unleash his full skill set."Gannon said that, unlike the previous regime, he plans to have Murray work under center in addition to taking snaps from shotgun."We're not gonna put him in gun all the time, I'll tell you that. We'll have two significant offenses with his skill set: one being under center and one being in the gun," Gannon said.He added: "That's the missing piece I thought they had with Kyler. They were in gun all the time. When you're in gun all the time, you don't make the defense defend certain play types. Now, when you get him under center, the defense has to defend a lot more type of play types."Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, spent his first four NFL seasons working with former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The duo enjoyed mixed success before Arizona fired Kingsbury after a 4-13 campaign in 2022. The Cardinals made one playoff appearance under Kingsbury, but he publicly clashed with Murray at times this past season.Murray posted career lows in wins (three), passing touchdowns (14), passing yards per game (215.3), and passer rating (87.2) in 2022. I mean, who doesn't, right? He's the greatest. I get it, I understand why they went after him," Olsen said. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he'll take advantage of pushing the quarterback on sneak plays next season if the NFL doesn't change the rule."I was talking to Sean Payton during Sunday's game, and he said, 'We're going to do this every time next season if they don't take it out,'" Fox Sports rules analyst Dean Blandino told Paul Domowitch of The 33rd Team. The Philadelphia Eagles ran the "Tush Push" to near perfection this season, as Jalen Hurts converted a first down on 36 of 40 quarterback sneaks using the strategy. The NFL made it legal to push a ball carrier in 2005."I think the league is going to look at this, and I'd be shocked if they don't make a change," Blandino added. The competition committee is set to meet in two weeks at the NFL Scouting Combine, and pushing a ball carrier will be one of the rule changes they'll look at. They can either keep the rule as is, ban it altogether, or outlaw it on quarterback sneaks.Other NFL players have spoken out about the Eagles' use of the push quarterback sneak."It's illegal; they're never set. If you watch, the O-linemen are never set," Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward said, according to LeeAnn Lowman of Steeler Nation. He added: "I'm triggered. Yes, it should be changed. They are never given time, they hurry up to the ball, and no one is ever set. ... I'm just confused why they switched the rule. Since the Texans' touchdown on fourth-and-20 and subsequent two-point conversion, the Bears organization has embarked on a "Choose Your Own Adventure."After the first chapter of popular children's books in the 80s and 90s, readers had to pick a path to take for the rest of their story. Unlike previous NFL Drafts where the league's worst team had a pretty obvious move - like taking premier quarterbacks for the Bengals in 2020 and Jaguars in 2021 or picking their best player available as Jacksonville did in 2022 - Chicago's decision is a true fork in the road. The first is whether the team's future is in Justin Fields or a top quarterback prospect. If the choice is Fields, then the next decision is what to do with the pick. Keep it and take a defensive player, or accept an offer to trade down? If the Bears make a provocative move like dealing Fields, which quarterback's shoulders do they want to rest their future on?The Bears are sending out smokescreens as of this writing, so how you handicap what they'll do with their next move will inform how to bet on the first overall draft pick.Player to be drafted first overallPLAYERODDSBryce Young-130CJ Stroud+200Will Anderson+550Jalen Carter+650Will Levis+700Anthony Richardson+5000Myles Murphy+6000*Other players available at 100-1 or longerBryce Young's size will be scrutinized in the upcoming NFL Combine, and there isn't a hole for him to fill on the team currently selecting first. On top of that, there's actual competition for the top quarterback available in CJ Stroud - and maybe physical Adonis Will Levis. While Young was consistently the best college passer over the last two seasons, I have a hard time buying him as the odds-on favorite (with a 56.5% probability) at this moment.Logically, with three potential high-end signal-caller prospects and the draft's history of players at that position going one after another at the top, it's easy to imagine a QB not just going first overall but in the second spot as well.Draft OrderPICKTEAM1Bears2Texans3Cardinals4Colts5Seahawks6Lions7Raiders8Falcons9Panthers10Eagles11TitansWe've included the Titans, who are at least in the market for a quarterback with the 11th pick - but they would have to make quite the offer to get up to No. 1.Betting on anything in the draft shouldn't be based on what you think a team should do but instead on probabilities. Should the Texans deal a future first-round pick to swap spots with the Bears? Probably not. Could they? Absolutely. It's worth remembering while betting now that someone's stock could increase and odds could shorten between mid-February and mid-April, regardless of who actually goes first. Even Young at -130 could end up the consensus pick and head into the -400 range. With free agency before the draft and the Bears replete with cap room, they may fill a hole that makes them less likely to take certain players.Fading the favorite?A team that trades up into No. 1 would jump the Texans to take the player it may want. So, in that case, we have to figure out how it's anyone other than Young.Levis is the most likely player to have scouts drooling when athleticism is measured at the Combine. At 6-foot-3, 230 lbs, Levis (+700) could look a lot like Jalen Hurts to new Colts head coach Shane Steichen. However, at the fourth pick, Indianapolis could sit tight and still get Levis knowing that if he's gone, Young or Stroud are likely still available as a nice consolation prize. On the defensive side, Jalen Carter (+650) will most likely be the jaw-dropper during the first week of March and would start the Bears' defensive rebuild in the middle. That would mean no one was willing to meet Chicago's price to trade up, but there are seemingly too many quarterback-needy teams within range for the team not to find a partner.Young won't go first overall if:

(I'm) more determined, driven to make that climb again, to make it to the top."The Eagles finished atop the NFC with a 14-3 record before being stopped by the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. However, Philadelphia is scheduled to have multiple starters become free agents and lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators to head coaching jobs.Sirianni added that the replacement for former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who became the Indianapolis Colts' head coach, will continue to call plays, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. He said this will allow him to manage the game better. As for the future of the defensive coordinator post, Sirianni told reporters he's "not opposed" to changing defensive schemes after Jonathan Gannon took the Arizona Cardinals' head coaching job, per Jeff McLane of The Inquirer. The Eagles' defense ranked eighth in scoring and second in yardage allowed in 2022. Another NFL season full of intriguing storylines is officially in the books. Before we transition to offseason mode and another few months of wild player movement, let's examine some of the more important developments and takeaways from the 2022 campaign.WRs worth the price Megan Briggs / Getty ImagesAn exploding wide receiver market was the big story in the NFL last offseason. Not only did a collection of star pass-catchers successfully push for contracts in the $25-million-to-$30-million range, but some came as part of trades in which teams also had to dish out premium draft picks. The escalation of the price tag for top receivers seemed likely to leave at least a few teams looking foolish for their aggressive moves. Yet you'd be hard-pressed to find a single case where any big spender at the position is experiencing even the faintest amount of buyer's remorse.Tyreek Hill immediately helped the Dolphins turn into one of the league's most explosive passing attacks, while A.J. Brown pushed the Eagles' offense over the top en route to a Super Bowl appearance. The Raiders were a major disappointment overall, but Davante Adams continued to dominate in his new home with a third consecutive first-team All-Pro honor.Stefon Diggs, DK Metcalf, Deebo Samuel, and Terry McLaurin, who each received extensions worth $23 million-$24 million per season, have easily justified their respective long-term commitments. The Vikings won't bat an eye when Justin Jefferson looks to blow past Hill's $30-million mark this offseason, and neither will the Bengals when it's Ja'Marr Chase's turn next year.Such is the value of a true No. 1 receiver in today's NFL. A player who can so consistently dominate one-on-one matchups on the outside, dictating coverage in a way that opens up the field for the rest of the offense, might be the second-most valuable piece on a roster, outside of the quarterback. The cost of business isn't so daunting when you consider that finding such a player is now imperative if you have any hope of fielding a top passing attack - with one notable exception, that is.Mahomes stands alone Cooper Neill / Getty Images Sport / GettyA franchise quarterback on a rookie contract is almost always going to give you the best chance at chasing a ring. Philly, for example, had the opportunity to go all-out and build a star-studded roster largely because Jalen Hurts is making relative peanuts as a recent second-round pick. The result was the most talented team in football rolling through the NFC playoffs. The Chiefs' roster, as you might expect with a quarterback playing on a 10-year, $450-million contract, pales in comparison to that of the Eagles. There's a reason a team had never won a Super Bowl with a quarterback taking up more than 12.5% of the salary cap. Unfortunately for Philly, though, you can throw all those rules out the window when you're dealing with the ultimate outlier.Patrick Mahomes isn't just the best quarterback in the game today - he's probably already the best we've ever seen. The idea that a player could be in the GOAT conversation six years into his career will be unacceptable to some - particularly those who construct individual hierarchies by counting rings - but that's truly where we're at with Mahomes. There's never been anyone like him.The Chiefs superstar took the NFL by storm in his first year as a starter in 2018, toying with opposing defenses in the vertical game to collect more than 5,000 passing yards and a league-leading 50 touchdowns. His continued dominance in the years that followed, including a Super Bowl win in 2019, forced defenses to adjust. The resulting increase in two-high coverage looks designed to take away the big play initially gave Mahomes and the Chiefs some trouble in 2021, and the offseason departure of Hill fed into the idea that this offense could be headed for a decline.Instead, Mahomes made some adjustments of his own.

New Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon can't wait to work with quarterback Kyler Murray."We're going to have a great relationship," Gannon said Thursday during his introductory press conference, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. "He's a direct reflection of me. That position is the player that's most like a coach on that field."The Cardinals hired Gannon after he served as the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator over the last two seasons. He'll replace Kliff Kingsbury, whom Arizona fired after going 4-13 in 2022.Kingsbury and Murray both helped Arizona improve its offense upon joining the team in 2019, although the coach was often questioned over his inconsistent play-calling. The two also publicly clashed on occasion and reportedly had to work on communication issues midway through the 2022 campaign.Murray - the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year - suffered a torn ACL in Week 14. He reportedly isn't expected to be ready for the start of the 2023 season, but Gannon knows what the signal-caller will bring to the table once he's healthy."I used the term he's a problem to defend because of what he can do," Gannon said. The 40-year-old added: "When you have to defend a player like that, it puts a defense in conflict. You can't do everything you want to do as a defense."Gannon also said he won't decide who'll call plays on defense until his coaching staff is finalized. The Cardinals have yet to hire a new offensive coordinator."That's Step 1, we're starting to look at some different candidates (for OC)," Gannon added, according to Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons. "But I have a very specific vision of how I want to play on offense. And the person that comes in here to run the offense is going to understand that everything we do will be structured around the quarterback position to maximize his skill set - and we have an elite one."Copyright © 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. New York Giants legend Tiki Barber doesn't think Aaron Rodgers would fare well in the Big Apple. On Wednesday's episode of his WFAN show "Tiki & Tierney," Barber questioned whether the Green Bay Packers quarterback would be able to handle the increased media attention if he joined a New York team."It just made me start to realize that if he is that sensitive that he gets upset that people - reporters, opinion makers, influencers, whoever - wanna talk about him, he is going to struggle in New York," Barber said. "And I don't know if it's the right fit for him. I don't know if I want him in New York if this is going to be his reaction to things that don't matter."Barber's remarks came in response to Rodgers' appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" earlier this week when he said that NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport "don't know shit" about him.Barber also referenced Rodgers' upcoming "darkness retreat," during which he'll remain in isolation for four days to contemplate his future."When you go and you're doing something that feels odd to normal society, which is going to sit in a cabin in the woods for four days and complete sensory isolation, we're gonna talk about it," Barber said. "You have to. It's our job to, and for him to get offended by that, he's not gonna handle the intensity of the New York mediascape."Rodgers signed a three-year, $150.8-million contract extension with the Packers in March 2022 but has yet to decide if he wants to return to the team for a 19th season, retire, or play elsewhere. The New York Jets are reportedly among the teams that have reached out to the Packers about Rodgers' availability.Copyright © 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. As the Bears size up for a new stadium, Justin Fields said the only thing he cares about isn't whether the team plays in downtown Chicago or in the suburbs - it's whether he'll have to keep playing in the cold Windy City weather."I hope we get a dome," Fields recently said on the "Pardon My Take" podcast, according to Ryan Taylor of NBC Chicago. "I don't care if we're at Soldier Field, I don't care if we're at Arlington Heights. I hope we get a dome."The Bears purchased a 326-acre property in suburban Arlington Heights on Wednesday, although the team cautioned that doesn't mean plans for a domed stadium will come to fruition. In July, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pitched the idea of building a dome over Soldier Field - a place the Bears have called home since 1971 - but the team said it wasn't interested."It is very difficult to adjust to it, especially with the wind," Fields said of Chicago's weather. "That's what I found out. That's what it's all about, is the wind. It can be cold. It can be 10 degrees. But, with no wind you're fine. But with that 15-mile-per-hour wind, that 20-mile-per-hour wind, you can't fight it, it's tough."When it's that cold, you have to bundle up. I feel way slower in that cold. It's hard to stay warm in that weather."After struggling in his rookie season, Fields put on a show on the ground in 2022, rushing for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging a league-high 7.1 yards per carry. He also slightly improved as a passer, though he finished the season with just a 60.4% completion rate, 17 touchdown passes, and an 85.2 rating.Chicago owns the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft as the club tries to speed up its rebuild after going 3-14 this past season.Copyright © 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan has emerged as a top candidate for the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator position, reports Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.Ryan, who has been an analyst for ESPN since being fired by the Bills in 2016, reportedly met with new Broncos head coach Sean Payton recently to discuss him joining the staff. The 60-year-old last worked as a defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens from 2005-08 before being hired by the Jets.Ryan - who's known for his brash coaching style - immediately turned New York into a contender, with the club making back-to-back AFC Championship Games while also winning 20 regular season games in his first two years. However, the Jets failed to make the postseason again under Ryan. They went 26-38 over the next four seasons, with Ryan being fired following a 4-12 campaign in 2014.Ryan was hired by Buffalo several weeks later but only made it two seasons into a five-year contract. He was dismissed after the Bills were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 of the 2016 season, finishing with an overall record of 15-16.Ryan's brother, Rob, served as Payton's defensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints from 2013-15.Denver is looking for a new defensive coordinator after releasing Ejiro Evero from his contract. Evero quickly landed the same role with the Carolina Panthers.Copyright © 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley is applying for reinstatement Wednesday, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The NFL suspended Ridley indefinitely for betting on league games in 2021 while a member of the Atlanta Falcons, and he sat out the 2022 season. Feb. 15 is the first day the 28-year-old can apply for reinstatement. The Falcons traded him to the Jaguars in November for conditional draft picks. The maximum compensation for Atlanta is a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 second-round selection. The Falcons will reportedly receive a 2023 fifth-round pick if Ridley is reinstated by an unspecified date. If he doesn't, it'll become a sixth-rounder. Additionally, if Ridley makes the team in 2024, Atlanta will get at least a fourth-round selection from Jacksonville. That pick will become a third-rounder if the wideout hits a play-time milestone or a second-round choice if the Jaguars sign him to a long-term extension.Ridley's return would add another explosive weapon to an emerging Jacksonville offense. Led by star quarterback Trevor Lawrence this past season, the Jaguars reached the divisional round in their first playoff appearance since 2017. Christian Kirk topped the club with 133 targets, 84 receptions, 1,108 yards, and eight touchdown catches.Ridley, the 26th overall pick in 2018, earned a second-team All-Pro nod in 2020 after catching 90 passes for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns through 15 games. He made only five appearances in 2021, finishing the year with 31 receptions, 281 yards, and two scores.Copyright © 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc.
