Falcons bring back Clayborn on 1-year deal
The Atlanta Falcons have signed defensive end Adrian Clayborn to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday. His contract is worth up to $4 million, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Clayborn played three seasons with the Falcons before joining the New England Patriots for the 2018 campaign. The 30-year-old had just 2.5 sacks during the 2018 regular season and one in the playoffs. He's only a year removed from nearly reaching double digits, though six of Clayborn's 9.5 sacks in 2017 came during a single impressive performance against the Dallas Cowboys.Atlanta struggled to rush the passer in 2018. It produced a total of 37 sacks (tied for 22nd), led by Takkarist McKinley with seven. The cap-poor Falcons have been relatively quiet during free agency, retooling their offensive line by signing guards Jamon Brown and James Carpenter and adding depth to the offensive skill positions.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rodgers reveals extent of early-season knee injury
Aaron Rodgers limped through the first half of the 2018 campaign after suffering a serious knee injury in the season opener against the Chicago Bears. The Green Bay Packers star quarterback looked healthier toward the end of the season, but never appeared to truly recover from what was believed to be just an MCL sprain. Rodgers revealed the extent of his injury during a Tuesday appearance on ESPN's Wild and Tausch."I had a tibial plateau fracture and obviously an MCL sprain. So, that was very painful," Rodgers said. "If you watch the hit back, just my two bones here that come together on the outside just kind of made an indent fracture. Very painful."
Stephen Jones: Dak deserves big raise but deal must be 'team friendly'
The Dallas Cowboys know Dak Prescott has earned a massive pay bump. But with a host of other stars in line for big extensions, executive vice president Stephen Jones wants a deal that works for both parties. After inking DeMarcus Lawrence to a $105-million, five-year deal, the Cowboys will likely prioritize extending their quarterback. But Jones said Monday on ESPN Radio 103.3 in Dallas that Prescott's deal must be "team friendly.""At the same time, and I know Dak wants this, you want a supporting cast," Jones said, according to SportsDay. "That's the way to go down as being one of the great quarterbacks to ever play the game: win championships. ... I know Dak. His No. 1 goal here is to win Super Bowl championships. He's a winner; he's a leader."Prescott's four-year rookie contract is worth a total of $2.72 million, arguably the best bargain contract in the NFL. His 2019 base salary will be just over $2 million thanks to performance escalators, but that figure is still is tied for just 382nd in the league, according to Spotrac.Running back Ezekiel Elliott, cornerback Byron Jones, and wide receiver Amari Cooper are all in need of new contracts - deals that will likely pay them at or near the top of their respective markets. If Prescott fights for every dollar, Dallas could find itself with a severely top-heavy roster."I just feel good that we'll find our way to a place that the contract enables us to surround him with a great supporting cast, which a lot of it's in place," Jones continued. "So we've just gotta keep building on that and be able to fit Dak in."Though Prescott lacks a convincing argument to top Aaron Rodgers' league-leading payout at $33.5 million a year, the 25-year-old boasts a similar pedigree to the likes of Kirk Cousins ($28 million), Derek Carr ($25 million), and Jimmy Garoppolo ($27 million)."He's never made a lot of money, per se, with his contract," said Jones. "Certainly deserves to be paid and be paid fairly."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
AB fuels feud with JuJu by posting old DM from ex-teammate
The war of the wideouts is apparently far from over.A day after Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster engaged in a heated Twitter spat, the Oakland Raiders receiver posted what appears to be an old direct message from his former Pittsburgh Steelers teammate to his Instagram account. In the since-deleted message, dated to 2015, Smith-Schuster (then a USC player) appears to laud Brown and ask the veteran wideout for tips on becoming a better receiver.
Rodgers denies hostility with McCarthy, calls report a 'smear attack'
Aaron Rodgers is speaking out about a report last week of his ego causing a clash between him and former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, ultimately leading to the coach's 2018 mid-season firing. The Packers quarterback described the Bleacher Report story as a "smear attack" from a writer and "bitter" players conjured up while attempting to advance their careers."I love Mike McCarthy," Rodgers said on ESPN Milwaukee radio on Monday, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "He's a great man. He's got a huge heart. He really cares about his players, and he showed that to us. ... As far as a player to a coach, it's just two Alpha males who are hyper-competitive and love winning and are both a little stubborn. But, again, we talked through so many different issues over the years and that made us a lot stronger."The 35-year-old said he was sometimes frustrated with McCarthy, but added that it never affected the team."The beauty in our on-the-field relationship was that there was a ton of trust," Rodgers said. "When I read stuff like, 'I'd disrespect him by changing all these plays,' I had a lot of latitude. He knew that and I knew that. I called the two-minute, I'd call stretches of no-huddle offense. ... A lot of times, he'd send two plays in. 'Hey, do you like this or that?' That's what it grew."The organization parted with McCarthy following a Week 13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 with the team sporting a 4-7-1 record. The former head coach said last week the firing "stunned" him and that it "couldn't have been handled any worse."Rodgers hopes McCarthy's legacy in Green Bay remains intact and that he's honored the "right way.""We had a hell of a run," Rodgers said. "We had 13 years, four NFC championships, one Super Bowl, eight straight playoffs, 19 straight wins. So, instead of trashing this guy on the way out, let's remember the amazing times that we had together."Packer fans, remember this, especially those of you who live in Green Bay: Mike lives here. Mike has young kids here. So Mike has to be here. Think about how difficult it is for him. My favor that I would ask of you, strongly, is if you see Mike, shake his hand. Tell him thanks for the memories."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Draft Needs: Identifying the biggest problem area for every AFC team
theScore goes division by division to identify the most significant remaining hole for every AFC team ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft, which will take place April 25 to 27.AFC I NFCAFC EastBuffalo BillsBiggest need: Tight endBrett Carlsen / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe highly active Bills used free agency to retool their offensive line - a major weakness in 2018 - and inked Cole Beasley and John Brown to lessen the need for pass-catchers. However, Buffalo should continue to boost the talent level around Josh Allen, and it suffers from a greater lack of depth at no position more than tight end. Free-agent signing Tyler Kroft had a seven-touchdown campaign in 2017, but he's not a starting-caliber player, and former undrafted free agent Jason Croom and converted offensive lineman Jake Fisher are the Bills' only other tight ends. Buffalo's big-armed quarterback needs an equally imposing middle-of-the-field threat.Potential draft targets: T.J. Hockenson (Iowa), Dawson Knox (Ole Miss)Miami DolphinsBiggest need: Defensive lineThe 2020 draft will be vital for the seemingly tanking Dolphins, as they reportedly hope to land quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. But this year's class can't be overlooked. It will lay the foundation for Miami's new era, and there's nowhere better to begin building a base than the defensive line, an enormous need for Miami after a mass exodus. Robert Quinn, Andre Branch, and Cameron Wake are gone, further weakening a unit that finished 31st in run defense and 29th in sacks last year. Edge rushers and interior linemen are required in equal measure; the Dolphins should use multiple early picks to shore up the unit before the potential arrival of a franchise savior.Potential draft targets: Brian Burns (Florida State), Christian Wilkins (Clemson)New England PatriotsBiggest need: Pass-catchersIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyTom Brady might need some time to learn his receivers' names before the start of the season. Even prior to Rob Gronkowski's retirement, New England's pass-catching options looked thin. But with the future Hall of Famer gone, it's particularly dire. Julian Edelman, who turns 33 in May, is the only legitimate starter; Phillip Dorsett exceeded low expectations in 2018, but he's an underwhelming second option, and someone named Jacob Hollister is TE1. After failing to land Jared Cook and Adam Humphries, an overhaul of their pass-catching weapons is priority No. 1 for the Patriots, who should target the best receiver or tight end available.Potential draft targets: Noah Fant (Iowa), Hakeem Butler (Iowa State)New York JetsBiggest need: Pass-rusherThe Jets spent the most cash by a fair margin in free agency, with running back Le'Veon Bell, linebacker C.J. Mosley, and slot wideout Jamison Crowder inking eye-popping deals to fill glaring holes. New York did, however, fail to find an answer for perhaps its biggest need: pass-rusher. It wasn't for a lack of trying, though, as an agreed deal with linebacker Anthony Barr - whom the Jets envisioned playing on the edge - fell apart after he opted to return to the Minnesota Vikings. Still, the lack of a Plan B in free agency was obvious, which perhaps signals that New York is eyeing one of the highly rated pass-rushers at No. 3 overall.Potential draft targets: Nick Bosa (Ohio State), Josh Allen (Kentucky)AFC WestDenver BroncosBiggest need: QuarterbackJoe Amon/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images / Denver Post / GettyEven if you agree with John Elway that Joe Flacco is "just going into his prime" months after his 34th birthday, there's little argument that Denver's general manager needs to find a franchise passer to make up for a series of high-profile blunders. The Broncos are attempting to stay competitive while replacing the key pieces of their 2015 Super Bowl-winning team, and Flacco's presence should allow them to sit even a highly touted rookie quarterback. But, as owners of the 10th overall pick, is Denver willing to risk trading up to snag a top prospect?Potential draft targets: Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State), Drew Lock (Missouri)Kansas City ChiefsBiggest need: Pass-rusherKansas City got a major wake-up call in the AFC title game loss to the Patriots. Elite pass-rushers Justin Houston, Dee Ford, and Chris Jones didn't register a single sack on Brady, and nose tackle Derrick Nnadi produced the only hit. The response? Houston and his $21.1-million cap hit was dumped and Ford was traded for a 2020 second-rounder. The additions of Emmanuel Ogbah and Alex Okafor offset the losses, to a degree, but if the Chiefs' plan is to replicate New England's rotation of affordable edge rushers instead of investing heavily, the logical move is to add a rookie or two on controlled deals.Potential draft targets: Clelin Ferrell (Clemson), Chase Winovich (Michigan)Los Angeles ChargersBiggest need: Defensive tackleHarry How / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Chargers' roster is stacked and should put the team right back in the thick of the race for AFC supremacy. But no depth chart is perfect, and Los Angeles needs to beef up the center of its talented defense. Curiously, the Chargers re-signed the older Brandon Mebane while parting ways with Darius Philon and Corey Luiget, leaving just three defensive tackles on the roster. L.A. eschewed the free-agent market (so far), making it vital to add youth and depth in the draft to complement the elite play from pass-rushers Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa.Potential draft targets: Dexter Lawrence (Clemson), Jerry Tillery (Notre Dame)Oakland RaidersBiggest need: Pass-rusherTrading away Khalil Mack was, of course, always going to hurt the Raiders' pass rush. But it sunk to abysmal levels in 2018, as Oakland produced just 13 sacks as a team - a total that was matched by 11 individual defensive players (Mack was close with 12.5). Last year's third-rounder, Arden Key, is the only pass-rusher of note on the entire roster and he had one sack as a rookie. There might not be a bigger hole in the entire league than the Raiders' pass rush.Potential draft targets: Rashan Gary (Michigan), Josh Allen (Kentucky)AFC NorthBaltimore RavensBiggest need: Wide receiverDiamond Images / Diamond Images / GettyOf Baltimore's three leading pass-catchers from a season ago, only Willie Snead remains. The veteran is far from a No. 1 option, and it gets uglier further down the depth chart; Chris Moore caught just 17 passes in 2018, while then-rookies Jaleel Scott and Jordan Lasley failed to register a single grab. John Harbaugh is right that Baltimore could struggle to attract certain wideouts in free agency until Jackson proves himself as a passer, so the natural move is to draft its own and mold them to fit into the team's unique offensive identity.Potential draft targets: Marquise Brown (Oklahoma), Parris Campbell (Ohio State)Cleveland BrownsBiggest need: LinebackerFor years, the Browns' biggest need was, well, everything. But, finally, a franchise quarterback has been found and a busy offseason improved an already impressive roster. Suddenly, Cleveland finds itself in the contender tier. The big hole at safety was plugged by Eric Murray and Morgan Burnett - though a long-term option would be welcome - making linebacker arguably the defense's weakest position after a disappointing 2018 from the unit. Following Jamie Collins' release, Christian Kirksey, Joe Schobert, and Genard Avery are slated to start. The trio, though not without their strengths, lack the athleticism to consistently cover pass-catching tight ends and backs.Potential draft targets: Mack Wilson (Alabama), Vosean Joseph (Florida)Cincinnati BengalsBiggest need: Offensive lineJohn Grieshop / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Bengals need major reinforcements at linebacker and on the offensive line, but since the latter - a top unit only a few years ago - could be the key to success in 2019 and beyond, it gets the nod here. Cordy Glenn has the left tackle spot locked down but will turn 30 in September and has a lengthy injury history. Guard Clint Boling is excellent but is also nearing 30. Beyond those two, there's essentially no top talent and little depth; the lack of options at tackle was especially highlighted when Glenn missed three games in 2018. While the re-signing of Bobby Hart was met with incredulity, the fact that his contract is essentially a one-year deal shows Cincinnati knows it needs to find a new right tackle.Potential draft targets: Jawaan Taylor (Florida), Dalton Risner (Kansas State)Pittsburgh SteelersBiggest need: LinebackerThe Steelers learned to live without Bell last season and will have to do the same without Antonio Brown in 2019 after his dramatic exit. While Pittsburgh's ability to find receiving and backfield talent mitigates those concerns, the same magic hasn't been able to fill the large void left by Ryan Shazier. The Steelers' defense hasn't been the same since the linebacker's spinal injury in 2017, as it has greatly missed the two-time Pro Bowler's rare athleticism and range. Pittsburgh underestimated the loss of Shazier last season and can't afford to repeat that error.Potential draft targets: Devin Bush (Michigan), Blake Cashman (Minnesota)AFC SouthHouston TexansBiggest need: Offensive lineIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyEntering free agency, the Texans clearly needed an infusion of talent in front of Deshaun Watson, who was sacked a league-high 62 times in 2018. Nearly a month later, however, and the same need tops Houston's priority list. The Texans made just one addition despite ample cap space, and it was an underwhelming one at that. Matt Kalil, who missed 2018 with a knee injury, will likely slide into the left tackle spot, but his presence shouldn't stop Houston from taking multiple offensive linemen in the draft. The former fourth overall pick is, at best, a stop-gap option after signing a one-year deal.Potential draft targets: Andre Dillard (Washington State), Garrett Bradbury (NC State)Indianapolis ColtsBiggest need: Wide receiverIn just one year, the Colts' roster has gone from one of the AFC's worst to one of its best thanks to the efforts of general manager Chris Ballard, who's plugged many of Indy's gaping holes. Despite benefiting from the most cap space, Ballard stuck to his frugal philosophy. One of the few signings he did make was receiver Devin Funchess, who gives Andrew Luck a legitimate threat besides T.Y. Hilton. A long-term answer is needed, though, as Hilton turns 30 in November, Funchess signed only for 2019, and Deon Cain, Indy's most promising young wideout, tore his ACL in August after earning rave reviews in his rookie training camp. Another big-time weapon for Luck might push the Colts over the top.Potential draft targets: N'Keal Harry (Arizona State), Deebo Samuel (South Carolina)Jacksonville JaguarsBiggest need: Tight endBrett Carlsen / Getty Images Sport / GettyJacksonville guaranteed $50 million to Nick Foles, essentially locking him into the starting job for two seasons as it eyes another postseason run. But the quarterback isn't the final piece to the championship puzzle. While Foles has proven himself capable over the last two years, he benefitted from an elite supporting cast, and the biggest talent discrepancy between Philly and Jacksonville is at tight end. Foles is going from Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert (plus Trey Burton in 2017) to Geoff Swaim and James O'Shaughnessy, who combined for 50 catches and one touchdown in 2018. If the Jaguars want Super Bowl MVP Foles, a security blanket is a must.Potential draft targets: T.J. Hockenson (Iowa), Irv Smith Jr. (Alabama)Tennessee TitansBiggest need: Pass-rusherHarold Landry was one of the biggest Day 2 steals last year, and Tennessee's likely hoping for the kind of second-year leap that would greatly minimize its need at pass-rusher. The Titans signaled their belief in the second-rounder by signing 37-year-old Cameron Wake instead of a free agent in his prime. But you can't have too many pass-rushers, and though Wake signed a three-year deal, banking on more than one season from him isn't smart. A running mate for Landry could take the defense to the next level. The top edge players will likely be gone by pick No. 19, though, so Tennessee could again look for value in the subsequent rounds.Potential draft targets: Jachai Polite (Florida), Clelin Ferrell (Clemson)Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Manziel going by John now: 'I'm just kinda turning over the page'
"Johnny Football" is no more. While appearing on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Monday, Johnny Manziel revealed he's now going by John Manziel."I actually go by John these days," the quarterback said. "So, you know, I'm just kinda turning over the page and moving forward a little bit."Manziel also spoke about the demise of the Alliance of American Football and his time in the CFL, though he declined to go into detail about why he was released by the Montreal Alouettes."I don't really know about going into a ton of details of everything that happened, but looking back at it now, I'm happy," he said. Antonio Brown calls out Smith-Schuster on Twitter
The rivalry between Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster doesn't appear to be losing steam. The Oakland Raiders wide receiver took to Twitter on Sunday and urged his followers to "keep your emotions off the internet." The tweet prompted a number of responses, especially from fans of his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.Brown took particular exception to a response in which a fan reminded him that Smith-Schuster was named the Steelers' Most Valuable Player for the 2018 season. The star wideout proceeded to call out his former teammate by referencing the 22-year-old's key fumble in a Week 16 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The defeat greatly hurt the Steelers' chances at a playoff berth.
Report: 49ers seemed willing to beat Browns' offer for Beckham
The Cleveland Browns' trade for superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. on March 12 was a shock to many, including the San Francisco 49ers.San Francisco was the most active suitor for Beckham's services before the Browns entered the conversation and it's believed the Niners would have been willing to offer more to get the deal done, a league source told ESPN's Pat McManamon and Jordan Raanan.Instead, the New York Giants accepted the Browns' offer of the No. 17 pick in this year's draft, a third-round pick, and safety Jabrill Peppers for Beckham reportedly without shopping around for better offers or allowing San Francisco the option to beat Cleveland's offer."The 49ers were stunned," McManamon and Ranaan report. "(49ers general manager John) Lynch and (Giants GM Dave) Gettleman had multiple conversations spanning weeks. Despite the 49ers monitoring the situation closely, they ultimately never heard from the Giants before the trade was made. Gettleman's contact with Lynch ended the days prior to the conversations with Cleveland."The Giants reportedly wanted the 49ers' first-round selection in any deal for Beckham, while San Francisco wanted to swap first-rounders - their No. 2 pick for the Giants No. 6 selection. Apparent talks involving the 49ers' 2016 first-round pick, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, also proved unfruitful. But Lynch and the Niners brain trust believed they weren't done yet."They believed their best offer had yet to come," write McManamon and Ranaan.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mahomes delivered pregame speech before Texas Tech's Final Four win
It appears the NFL MVP can do no wrong.Prior to Texas Tech's Final Four victory over Michigan State on Saturday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivered an intense pregame speech to his alma matter."It was great," redshirt senior center Norense Odiase told ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "He was excited. You could see his blood rushing, veins popping. He was turnt. (Chiefs tight end) Travis Kelce was there as well. It was a blessing to have those guys come."The reigning NFL Most Valuable Player was spotted in the crowd supporting the Red Raiders during their 61-51 win over the Spartans."It was awesome. He's a great guy," star guard Jarrett Culver said following the game. "He supports his school. We all love to have Pat around, so when he comes out, it's unbelievable.""He came in our film session, and he said he's proud of us," guard Davide Moretti added. "We did something that nobody (at Texas Tech) has done before. He was cheering for us, and he said that we've got this because he knows how hard we play and how hard we've worked for it. He'll cheer his butt off for us."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Saban: Projected late-round picks lose out when leaving school early
Nick Saban is cautioning underclassmen who leave school early to enter the NFL draft. The Alabama head coach and five-time national title winner believes only top prospects should consider leaving school early to pursue the NFL."Now we have guys that have no draft grades, seventh-round grades, free-agent grades, fifth-round grades that are going out of the draft. And the person that loses in that is the player," Saban said on Saturday after his team's spring game, according to ESPN."If you're a third-round draft pick, and we had one here last year - I'm not going to say any names - goes and starts for his team, so he's making third-round money, which is not great. He'd be the first guy taken at his position this year, probably, and make $15-18 million more."Four players from Saban's program were selected in the first round of last year's draft. Three of them were underclassmen, but they each signed contracts worth $10-16 million.Safety Ronnie Harrison was the only Alabama player drafted in the third round in 2018. He left school following his junior season and signed a four-year, $3-million NFL contract. Harrison then started eight games for the Jacksonville Jaguars last year."So, the agent makes out, the club makes out, and now they've got a guy that's going to play for that kind of money for three more years, all right?" Saban added. The coach said the growing trend of underclassmen leaving is altering his approach to recruiting. He now tells recruits to prepare for life after football."I am 100 percent NFL. I'm 100 percent guys having careers, all right? But people have to be smart about the business decisions they make relative to the NFL because it is all business," Saban said. The 2019 NFL Draft begins on April 25. Up to four Alabama underclassmen could be selected in the first round from a group that includes Quinnen Williams, Jonah Williams, Deionte Thompson, Josh Jacobs, Irv Smith Jr., Mack Wilson, and Saivion Smith.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Gruden: Redskins could draft QB, would expect immediate impact
The Washington Redskins own the 15th pick of this month's draft and could use it to select a quarterback. The team lacks a long-term option at the position, but head coach Jay Gruden isn't interested in a lengthy learning curve."There is no developmental process here. This is not Triple-A baseball; we're (not) trying to develop a pitcher here," Gruden said, according to John Keim of ESPN. "We're trying to win a game right now. If we draft a quarterback in the first, second, third, or seventh rounds and he's going to start Day 1, we expect great things from him."The Redskins traded for starting quarterback Case Keenum, but the journeyman has just one year remaining on his contract. Alex Smith is under contract until 2022, but he's recovering from a gruesome leg injury suffered in 2018. Backup Colt McCoy is also recovering from a broken leg.If Washington does identify its quarterback of the future in this year's draft, he'll arrive in D.C. with plenty of expectations."Players will expect great things from him," Gruden said. "Ryan Kerrigan is not expecting us to come out and 'let's build for the future.' We've got to win now."Josh Norman, same way. Landon Collins did not come here to be good in 2034. They came here to be good and compete to win a Super Bowl this year."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Cowboys, Lawrence agree to 5-year, $105M megadeal
The Dallas Cowboys agreed to a five-year extension worth $105 million with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence on Friday. The deal includes $65 million guaranteed, ESPN's Todd Archer reports.Lawrence will receive more money during the first year of the deal than any defensive player in NFL history, a source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. His mark will eclipse the $31 million Khalil Mack pocketed in his first year with the Chicago Bears. The up-front money is necessary because fellow Cowboys stars Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott are scheduled to hit free agency in 2020, and Ezekiel Elliott will follow in 2021.At $21 million, Lawrence will now be paid the NFL's third-highest salary among defensive players behind Mack ($23.5 million) and Aaron Donald ($22.5 million).
Bengals waive Walton after 3rd arrest of 2019
The Cincinnati Bengals waived running back Mark Walton following his third arrest of the year, the team announced Saturday. The 21-year-old is facing felony charges of carrying a concealed weapon, marijuana possession, and reckless driving after a high-speed car chase in March that ended with him vanishing after being shot with a stun gun. He surrendered to authorities Thursday.“It's important for our team to get off to a fresh start as we begin the 2019 season," head coach Zac Taylor said. "For that reason, we felt it best if we move forward without Mark Walton. We hope his situation gets resolved, but we don't want to take anything away from the good work that so many other players have already begun to demonstrate."Walton, the Bengals' fourth-round pick last year, appeared in 14 games as a rookie.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cowboys, Lawrence optimistic new deal will be reached soon
The Dallas Cowboys and franchise-tagged defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence are both optimistic that an agreement for a new contract will be reached soon, a league source told ProFootballTalk's Michael David Smith.Dallas admitted last month that negotiations with Lawrence were at an impasse after it tagged the pass-rusher for a second straight season at a one-year cost of $20.5 million. But the two parties have resumed negotiations and are making progress, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.Lawrence, who racked up double-digit sacks in each of the last two seasons, reportedly upped his asking price recently. He's believed to be seeking an average annual salary of $22.5 million, though it appears his position may have softened.Khalil Mack, who makes $23.5 million per year, is the only defensive player with an annual salary higher than Lawrence's reported ask. Mack and Aaron Donald are the only two who take home more than $20 million yearly.Lawrence, 26, is apparently postponing shoulder surgery and won't report to team activities until a long-term agreement has been inked.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns sign former Steelers safety Burnett
The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent safety Morgan Burnett, the team announced Friday.Burnett will ink a two-year contract worth up to nearly $9 million, with almost $4 million fully guaranteed, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Pittsburgh Steelers released Burnett at his request on Monday, just one season into a three-year, $14.35-million deal.Cleveland has been active at the safety position this offseason. Former starter Jabrill Peppers was part of the trade for Odell Beckham Jr., three-year veteran Derrick Kindred was cut, and Eric Murray was acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs for pass-rusher Emmanuel Ogbah. The Browns also pursued star safety Eric Berry after the Chiefs released him; it's unclear how Burnett's signing would affect the team's interest in the five-time Pro Bowler.Burnett racked up 30 tackles and six passes defensed in 11 games last season. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen is expected to participate in the team's offseason workout program starting Monday despite speculation about his future with the franchise, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. While trade rumors continue to swirl involving the 2018 first-round pick, the Cardinals aren't actively shopping Rosen and "have not shown a willingness to trade him," though teams have inquired about his availability, Schefter adds. The Cardinals own the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft and have been widely linked to Heisman-winning quarterback Kyler Murray.Arizona traded up to the 10th pick last year to snag Rosen. But with noted Murray fan Kliff Kingsbury taking over as head coach, Rosen's place with the team is seemingly in jeopardy after a disappointing rookie season from the young quarterback.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mahomes welcomes Josh Allen's throwing challenge
Which NFL quarterback has the biggest arm? We could soon find out. After responding in February to a challenge by quarterback Josh Allen, reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes confirmed Wednesday he would meet the Buffalo Bills signal-caller to see who can throw a football further."Josh is a great dude, but no one that I've known has been able to throw a ball farther than me," Mahomes said at a New York charity event, according to Alex Brasky of the Batavia Daily News. "I've never seen Josh throw in person but maybe next offseason we can set something up (to see who can throw further). Hopefully, I can get him to come down to Kansas City, and we can do something for charity. It's going to take at least 85 yards to win."While he may be considered the underdog by some, Allen used his rocket-powered arm to throw downfield more than any other passer in 2018.However, Mahomes tore apart defenses downfield like few before him in his first season as a starter. He previously claimed to have thrown a football 85 yards (with wind assistance), while Allen tossed 80-yarders with apparent ease at his Pro Day last year.If the two young pivots can't get together this offseason, a faceoff would be an epic finale to next year's Pro Bowl Skills Showdown.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. AAF players authorized to sign with NFL teams
Alliance of American Football players are officially allowed to sign with NFL teams, the league announced Thursday. The NFL reportedly sent a memo Wednesday discouraging clubs to contact AAF players until the league allowed them to pursue other opportunities or officially folded. With authorization from the Alliance, it appears NFL squads are now free to contact players and their agents after already identifying prospects whom they'd be interested in.Though the AAF suspended operations on Tuesday, it has yet to completely fold. RGIII: Jaguars tried to trade for me in 2018
Robert Griffin III believes he could have been the starting quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019.The Baltimore Ravens quarterback said Jacksonville tried to trade for him at the end of the 2018 preseason and again prior to October's trade deadline. Last season's interest was the main reason Griffin waited to re-sign with Baltimore until the Jaguars signed Nick Foles."We knew that was an opportunity and there'd be a chance if things didn't work out with Nick Foles," Griffin told Ravens podcast "The Lounge," according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. "We just wanted to wait and see what would happen."Before deciding to re-up with the Ravens on a two-year contract, Griffin said he was in talks with other teams, including the Miami Dolphins."I ultimately felt like those situations weren't good," Griffin said. "I'm not looking to go somewhere and be a bridge or be there for a season and go somewhere else. I'm looking for stability and opportunity. For me right now, Baltimore is the best situation."Griffin signed with the Ravens in 2018 after being out of the league the year prior. Witten: 'It sucked' to hear MNF criticisms
Jason Witten's one season in the booth for ESPN's "Monday Night Football" was not well received. His rookie year as an analyst was dotted with numerous faux pas and made for bad reviews from the viewing public.Witten said the criticisms didn't fall on deaf ears, but they also didn't contribute to his decision to return to the field."Certainly, I took a beating. I'm aware of it," Witten said on the "Dual Threat" podcast with Ryen Russillo, according to Andrew Joseph of USA TODAY. "To say you didn't pay attention to it, bullshit. ... I wasn't immune to it. It sucked going through it at times."He added: "I didn’t make this decision off of the noise or the criticism. It was really just, 'I want to play.' The scoreboard matters and I want to be a part of that."Witten said the toughest part was reading messages of condolence from loved ones after a broadcast."I would check my texts and it was like they found out I was sick or something or somebody died in my family," he said. "'Praying for ya.' 'Keep your head up.' I'm like, my gosh, it wasn't that bad. I said, 'pulled a rabbit out of his head' instead of 'rabbit out of his hat.' You guys knew what I meant, right? I screwed up. Former AAF player: 'Everything was set up the right way'
In the aftermath of the Alliance of American Football, Brandon Pertile considers himself fortunate for the experience.Pertile, now a former offensive lineman for the short-lived league's Atlanta Legends, tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in the sixth game of the campaign. But his injury and subsequent placement on the injured reserve list meant he was already back home in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday when the league suspended operations eight games into what was supposed to be a 10-week inaugural season.Atlanta's players were left to return home this week on their own. They received game checks for the eighth week of the season, something Pertile said he appreciated. But those were likely the final payments of the non-guaranteed, three-year contracts players signed when they joined the new spring football league. The three-year deal was part of the AAF's allure to a player like Pertile, who also spent some time in the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes."If in three years you don't get picked up onto an NFL roster, it's kind of like, OK, put the dream aside at that point," said Pertile, who played college football at Virginia and Oklahoma State. "It's kind of nice, the three-year cushion or the opportunity to see if you've got what it takes."Logan Riely/AAF / Getty Images Sport / GettyPertile said he enjoyed the experience of the AAF. With the Legends, players had the option of living for free at a Marriott hotel property. (Pertile opted to get an apartment with his girlfriend and dogs.)The team practiced at a local high school, but Pertile said the practice structure and treatment of the players were "high class.""They did everything the right way," he said. "Guys were developing, we're getting coached by NFL coaches, everything was set up the right way."Attendance varied from city to city. The San Antonio Commanders led the league with an average home crowd of 27,721 per game, according to NFL Draft Diamonds. Two teams, the Arizona Hotshots and Salt Lake Stallions, drew fewer than 10,000 per game. For Pertile and his teammates, the future is uncertain. Johnny Manziel, the league's most recognizable player and quarterback for the Memphis Express, encouraged his peers to "save your money and keep your head up."
Lions GM wants to trade down from No. 8 pick
Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn has made it known that the No. 8 pick in this year's draft is available through trade."I always like draft picks, so if we can move back a couple spots and pick up another pick, I think the depth of this draft from the late first to the third, there's a lot of really good players in there," Quinn said on the "Rapsheet and Friends" podcast, according to NFL.com's Herbie Teope."If I could move back a few spots, add a great player and a pick, that'd be something that would be great. People out there listening, I'm open for business."Names currently linked to the Lions at No. 8 include defensive linemen Montez Sweat, Rashan Gary, Brian Burns, and Ed Oliver, as well as cornerback Greedy Williams. The scuffling club has a number of needs to fill, however, and may be better served to collect a larger haul rather than take the best player available.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Injury-to-elderly case against Michael Bennett dropped
Prosecutors moved to dismiss a felony charge of injury to the elderly against current New England Patriots defensive end Michael Bennett.Bennett was indicted by a Harris County grand jury in March 2018 for an alleged incident at the end of Super Bowl LI in February 2017. "After looking at all the evidence, this was the right thing to do."Evidence included surveillance video from the investigation into Tom Brady's stolen jersey."There was probable cause to warrant a charge initially, but after a careful review of all the pre-charge and post-charge evidence, we cannot prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt," King said.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. McCarthy stunned by firing: 'Couldn't have been handled any worse'
In 13 seasons, Mike McCarthy delivered the Green Bay Packers a Super Bowl title, eight straight years of playoff football, and 125 regular-season wins. But in the end, none of that could save him from a shock midseason firing in December with four games left to play. In his first sit-down interview since his dismissal, McCarthy said he was blindsided by the Packers' decision."If we missed the playoffs, I expected change might happen," McCarthy told ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "But the timing surprised me. Actually, it stunned me. It couldn't have been handled any worse."While McCarthy spoke glowingly about his time in Green Bay, the ex-coach said "it was hard to swallow" the emotionless way president Mark Murphy dismissed him following a loss to the Arizona Cardinals."Every time I released an individual, you get your words right," McCarthy said. "There's a personal component to it. You know he has a family. He's family. There wasn't any of that. So that was off. The way people leave that building was very important to me. That's a part of the business."It was rumored the end of the McCarthy era was driven by a fractured relationship with Aaron Rodgers, however, the 55-year-old heaped praise on his former quarterback while acknowledging the fact their working partnership was far from perfect."To think you can be in a relationship that long and not have any frustrations, that's unrealistic," he said.McCarthy again confirmed he intends to sit out the 2019 season before attempting a comeback in 2020.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. AAF suspending operations in anticipation of folding
The Alliance of American Football suspended its operations on Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala. The league isn't folding yet, but it's "moving in that direction," sources told ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio.Majority owner Tom Dundon said last week the AAF could only continue with the cooperation of the NFL and its players' association."If the players union is not going to give us young players, we can't be a development league," Dundon said. "We are looking at our options, one of which is discontinuing the league."Dundon invested $250 million into the league last month and was given the option to pull the funding as he wished. He will lose approximately $70 million of his investment, and his desire to fold the league opposes the wishes of co-founders Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian, sources told Action Network's Darren Rovell.League officials were surprised by the decision and are still hoping that outside funding could save the AAF, sources told Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr.Perception inside the AAF is that Dundon made his initial investment in order to acquire the technology and IP rights of a gambling app the league is developing, a source told SI's Albert Breer. The AAF just completed Week 8 of its 10-week season. NFL Power Rankings: Browns crack top 10 after savvy free-agency moves
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. New Orleans SaintsFinal 2018 Rank: 1After a disappointing 2018 finale, the Saints made a statement by signing Jared Cook, Malcom Brown, and Latavius Murray in free agency. It's safe to say their sights are set on the Lombardi Trophy.2. Kansas City ChiefsFinal 2018 Rank: 3The additions of Tyrann Mathieu and Bashaud Breeland are nice, but the losses of pass-rushers Justin Houston and Dee Ford are unsettling.3. New England PatriotsFinal 2018 Rank: 6Where there's a Brady-Belichick combination, there's a way. But the path is now foggier following the departures of dependable stars like Rob Gronkowski and Trey Flowers.4. Los Angeles RamsFinal 2018 Rank: 4It'll be "Super Bowl or Bust Part 2" for the Rams in 2019, as short-term deals given to Eric Weddle, Clay Matthews, and Dante Fowler were win-now moves for last season's runner-up.5. Chicago BearsFinal 2018 Rank: 2The Bears are ready to defend the (NFC) North in 2019, but did they add enough talent to fend off their drastically improved division rivals?6. Los Angeles ChargersFinal 2018 Rank: 5The Chargers were almost disappointingly quiet in free agency. Does anyone out there really believe Thomas Davis will make the difference following a divisional-round exit?7. Indianapolis ColtsFinal 2018 Rank: 10The Colts weren't planning to make a splash in free agency, but they still walked away with Justin Houston and Devin Funchess, who should fill key gaps in a roster that's ready to contend.8. Philadelphia EaglesFinal 2018 Rank: 15The Eagles plugged all their glaring holes with additions such as DeSean Jackson, Malik Jackson, and Jordan Howard. Now it's on Carson Wentz to stay healthy and deliver the goods.9. Cleveland BrownsFinal 2018 Rank: 16John Dorsey's team is the talk of the town these days. Led by Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, and of course, Odell Beckham Jr., Cleveland is finally ready to ascend in the AFC North.10. Seattle SeahawksFinal 2018 Rank: 9The Seahawks opted for continuity after a 10-win season, as they focused on re-signing their own players in free agency.11. Green Bay PackersFinal 2018 Rank: 18Kudos to GM Brian Gutekunst. The Packers - once allergic to early free-agent additions - addressed their biggest needs and are poised to compete for a playoff spot with Aaron Rodgers still in his prime.12. Minnesota VikingsFinal 2018 Rank: 12Sure, the Vikings were strapped for cap space, but you have to wonder why they hardly addressed the offensive line in free agency. A blocker or two must be added in the draft.13. Houston TexansFinal 2018 Rank: 7The defending AFC South champion will need to do more than sign Matt Kalil to fix an offensive line that allowed a league-high 62 sacks last season.14. Dallas CowboysFinal 2018 Rank: 11The defending NFC East champion made no discernible offseason upgrades, is mired in a contract standoff with star defender DeMarcus Lawrence, and retained one of the least-adaptable coaches in the league.15. Baltimore RavensFinal 2018 Rank: 8Quick - name two receivers on the Ravens' roster. Let's hope Lamar Jackson can survive a 16-game schedule.16. Carolina PanthersFinal 2018 Rank: 20The Panthers were rolling last year before Cam Newton's shoulder injury. We'll see if he's ready to pick up where he left off come September.17. Atlanta FalconsFinal 2018 Rank: 22Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is back for his second stint in Atlanta. That could be good news for Julio Jones, who found the end zone 18 times in 36 games with Koetter around from 2012-14.18. Tennessee TitansFinal 2018 Rank: 13The Titans added to their already sturdy offensive line and brought in slot receiver Adam Humphries, but how will the offense look under former tight ends coach Arthur Smith?19. Pittsburgh SteelersFinal 2018 Rank: 14It's officially a new era in Pittsburgh. It's also a shame the Steelers couldn't hoist the Lombardi Trophy while the Killer B's were together and in good spirits.20. Detroit LionsFinal 2018 Rank: 30Detroit spent big in free agency, but the veteran additions will only put more pressure on head coach Matt Patricia. If he can't produce in Year 2, his seat will warm up in a hurry.21. San Francisco 49ersFinal 2018 Rank: 28General manager John Lynch had an up-and-down offseason, taking a big risk (for a potentially big reward) on Kwon Alexander coming off a torn ACL and coupling that with a trade for Dee Ford. The return of Jimmy Garoppolo will be the team's biggest addition.22. Oakland RaidersFinal 2018 Rank: 31Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock are reshaping the Raiders in their image. The addition of Antonio Brown alone warrants a climb in these rankings.23. Jacksonville JaguarsFinal 2018 Rank: 26Are we really supposed to believe Nick Foles is the Jaguars' savior?24. New York JetsFinal 2018 Rank: 29Gang Green spent big in free agency and should be improved with Le'Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley in the lineup, but they still have too many question marks at the positions that really move the needle in the NFL.25. Buffalo BillsFinal 2018 Rank: 25Josh Allen's supporting cast is better, but the second-year pivot needs to make major strides in the accuracy department for that to really matter.26. Denver BroncosFinal 2018 Rank: 21The Broncos insist their roster is capable of competing. They also believe their recently acquired 34-year-old quarterback is "just going into his prime."27. Washington RedskinsFinal 2018 Rank: 19The truth is that Case Keenum is the type of quarterback you trade for when you want to go 6-10. No offense (and no pun intended).28. Tampa Bay BuccaneersFinal 2018 Rank: 27The clock is ticking on Jameis Winston to deliver that breakout season we've all been waiting for.29. Arizona CardinalsFinal 2018 Rank: 32Thanks to some fine under-the-radar moves and the decline of other teams, the Cardinals are out of the basement.30. Cincinnati BengalsFinal 2018 Rank: 23The Bengals' biggest offseason "splash" was re-signing Bobby Hart for $21 million. It's going to be a long year in Cincinnati.31. New York GiantsFinal 2018 Rank: 24The Giants' plan to ignore traditional stats, advanced stats, and the eye test in favor of another run with Eli Manning at age 38 is crazy - so crazy it just might work. It probably won't, though.32. Miami DolphinsFinal 2018 Rank: 17The Dolphins are committed to a full-scale rebuild, as evidenced by their signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick to start at quarterback in 2019 and their shedding of other veteran talents.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc.
