Browns' Kitchens: Being better on paper 'doesn't mean anything'
The Cleveland Browns have revamped the roster this offseason, but Freddie Kitchens won't say his squad has improved just yet.Despite a number of notable additions, especially on the offensive side of the ball, Cleveland's head coach will defer judgment until after his team takes the field."We're better on paper than we were last year," Kitchens told MMQB's Albert Breer on Friday. "That doesn't mean anything other than, we're better on paper. I mean this from the bottom of my heart - there are a lot of teams out there that have talent, there are a lot of teams out there that have good players individually."There aren't a lot of teams out there that play together as a team, where it means something to line up with each other. That's where we've got to get to."Cleveland was one of the big winners of the offseason, adding Sheldon Richardson, Olivier Vernon, and Odell Beckham Jr., among others.Kitchens, though, stresses the need for trust between his players and hopes his team forges relationships while blocking outside noise."None of the voices outside that locker room matter," he said. "At some point, we need to build relationships in our locker room. I think we did a good job of that during the last part of last year, but no two teams are the same, no two teams stay the same. And the journey starts right now. The journey starts now. Now, are we going to win a championship in March? No. Are we going to win one April 1? No."But what we do collectively starting April 1, as far as forming our team, as far as who they are, and who they want to be identified as, it starts now."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brady creates Twitter account on April Fools' Day, jokes he's retiring
It appears one of the NFL's all-time greats is trying his luck at the art of comedy.New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady created a Twitter account on April Fools' Day and used his first tweet to "announce" that he's retiring from the NFL.
McVay made Kingsbury believe he'd lose No. 1 pick with tampering prank
Sean McVay doesn't need April Fools' Day to be a prankster. The Los Angeles Rams head coach shared the story of his recent prank on Kliff Kingsbury - which caused the new Arizona Cardinals head coach to believe he'd lose draft picks - during an appearance on ESPN's "The Adam Schefter Podcast."McVay said his scheme was executed at a recent dinner with Kingsbury and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kingsbury previously coached the quarterback at Texas Tech."We have a mutual friend that I put his name in my phone as (NFL commissioner) Roger Goodell," McVay told Schefter. "I had this friend send me a text saying, 'I can't believe you're at dinner with Kingsbury and Mahomes. You know better than this. This is tampering. You're both losing picks.'"I showed Kliff the text, and he saw a ghost. I said, 'You better call (Cardinals general manager) Steve Keim right away.' He said, 'I thought I was going to lose the No. 1 overall pick.'"McVay added that he couldn't let the prank continue for "too long," and that Kingsbury later promised him, "I'm getting you back, man."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jason Witten 'invigorated' by return to Cowboys
Jason Witten is eager to get back on the football field following his one-year retirement that took him away from the Dallas Cowboys in 2018."I'm invigorated by the process of going back in there," Witten said Saturday, according to Grant Gordon of NFL.com. "I really feel like obviously I've got a lot of energy coming back in there. I'm excited, and I think you just get back in there. That's what I've enjoyed the most, getting with the guys, start looking at some tape and working out with coach (Mike) Woicik and the strength staff some."The 36-year-old tight end retired abruptly last April to take a broadcasting job on Monday Night Football. His return to the Cowboys was equally sudden, as the team announced Feb. 28 that he was coming out of retirement to rejoin the team."I said it when I retired a year ago: I don't know that anybody really knows when it's their time to go. And I was no different," he said. "Look, I had a great experience in the booth. I saw a different perspective. I saw the league from a different point of view in getting the opportunity to go see 31 other teams and how they build their team and go about it."But at the same time, I saw the Cowboys team start to come together and a lot of stars and young stars that love the game, and when Jerry (Jones) presented me that opportunity to come back, I was just extremely excited. I think more than anything else, it was just something that was tugging on me inside to say that maybe there's something still inside left to go out there and go after that championship."Witten caught 63 passes for 560 yards and five touchdowns in 2017. Dallas is coming off a year in which it captured the NFC East title and won its first playoff game since 2014.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Giants open to keeping Manning for 2020
The New York Giants are not ruling out bringing back Eli Manning for the 2020 season, sources told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.New York prefers to have Manning's successor selected next season, but if not, it will reportedly extend Manning for another year, according to Vacchiano. The Giants hold the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft but are reportedly eyeing a pass-rusher with that selection, Vacchiano added.New York paid Manning a $5-million roster bonus earlier this month, likely solidifying his status as the team's quarterback to begin the 2019 season. It was reported that the Giants aren't high on prospect Dwayne Haskins, who is expected to be one of the first quarterbacks taken in the draft, though the team reportedly recently met with the Ohio State product. The Giants were also rumored to be exploring a possible trade with Arizona for Josh Rosen if the Cardinals move on from the quarterback and select Kyler Murray in April's draft.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Michael Irvin announces he's cancer-free
Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin revealed he is cancer-free after undergoing tests on his throat earlier in the week."Thank you, God for continuing to answer prayers and thank you all for praying," Irvin posted in an Instagram message on Sunday. "I spoke with Dr. St John at UCLA Medical and she has informed me that all (tests) have come back 100 percent clean. No cancer! Belichick wants more offseason working time between coaches, players
Bill Belichick has collected eight Super Bowl rings over 45 years in the NFL, but he still wants to tinker.Fresh off of winning Super Bowl LIII, Belichick advocated at last week's annual league meeting for coaches to get more time to work with players during the offseason, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.Current league rules mandate that offseason workouts in April are strictly voluntary and restricted to a maximum of four per week. The workouts are non-contact."I'm in total support of his position," Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told Reiss on Saturday."There's so much downtime for these guys. I think there was a time when older players were bargaining for these breaks when they thought less was better. But these guys (today) love the game and want to be part of it. And we love coaching and helping them."Offseason workouts begin on the third Monday in April. Andre Johnson interested in becoming a general manager
After an illustrious career on the field, former wide receiver Andre Johnson is potentially looking to build one in the front office.“I’m learning the business of the game," Johnson said Saturday as he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. "I thought I might want to be a GM or run a team."Johnson spent 12 of his 14 NFL seasons with the Houston Texans, where he established numerous franchise records and earned seven Pro Bowl selections. The 37-year-old was hired one year ago as a special advisor to Texans coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Brian Gaine."I want to do everything I can to help the Texans win their first Super Bowl," he said.Johnson retired in 2016 after a brief stint with the Tennessee Titans. Dolphins owner Ross 'committed' to rebuild
The Miami Dolphins have insisted they aren't tanking in 2019, but owner Stephen Ross admitted his team will undergo a major rebuild."I'm looking at it now to do it the way I've built every business, and build it from the ground up," Ross said, according to NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman. "I'm prepared to stay with it. I am committed."Miami certainly experienced a number of roster changes this offseason, losing key veterans in Robert Quinn, Cameron Wake, Ja'Wuan James, Frank Gore, and long-time starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to potentially start in 2019, but currently lack long-term direction at the game's most important position, as well as other key spots.Ross claims the team has a plan, but is unsure of a timeline for completion."I would love for it to be two years. But you have to be realistic," Ross said of the attempted rebuild. "Hopefully, we make the right decisions. We have a good, young nucleus to start with. It's not like we're starting all over again. We have great players."We are a young team, but there are positions we need to get better at. You're not going to go buy those positions. You've got to draft and build them and grow them."Miami finished 7-9 in 2018, good for second place in the AFC East. The Dolphins have made just one playoff appearance over the last 10 seasons.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Sherman rips PI review: 'Now they can control the outcome'
Richard Sherman doesn't appear to be a fan of the league's recent decision to make pass interference calls and non-calls reviewable. The San Francisco 49ers cornerback aired his grievances via Twitter after the NFL approved the changes, which were heavily favored by coaches across the league."Now they can control the outcome as they see fit. Every defendable pass looks like PI in slow motion," Sherman wrote.Sherman also stated that the ruling benefited offenses, making it more of a "one-sided game."Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle chimed in, calling the rule change "dumb."
Fantasy: Will Jordan Howard revive the Eagles' rushing attack?
Find positional rankings, additional analysis, and subscribe to push notifications in the NFL Fantasy News section. We've seen several notable fantasy assets traded in the last few weeks, and though Jordan Howard doesn't have the star power of Antonio Brown or Odell Beckham Jr., he will get a chance to shine with a new club after Thursday night's deal. The Chicago Bears traded Howard to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2020, an incredibly reduced price for a running back who came 65 yards short of his third straight 1,000-yard campaign in 2018.Can Howard bounce back in Philly?Brett Carlsen / Getty Images Sport / GettyIf it feels like just yesterday you were reading about Howard potentially landing in Philadelphia, that's because you were. Howard made my list of starting running backs whose jobs were in danger, and I mentioned the Eagles as an ideal destination - a team that could give him the volume he needs to produce.Howard will take over Jay Ajayi's early-down role after the latter departed in free agency following an injury-shortened season due to a torn ACL.Prior to that, Ajayi was performing well during his brief stint with the Eagles. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry over his 10 games with the club in 2017, learning the offense on the fly after being traded midseason by the Dolphins. Before being lost for the year in early October, Ajayi was among the top 15 backs in fantasy points per game through four weeks and had three touchdowns. His recently acquired replacement is more than capable of finding the end zone with 25 total touchdowns over three seasons with the Bears. That's important since Howard doesn't bring much as a pass-catcher, so fantasy owners need him to cross the goal line in order to deliver quality stat lines. Those touchdown opportunities shouldn't be a problem for the Eagles in 2019. Doug Pederson's offense is just one season removed from being the third-highest scoring unit in the league with a rushing attack that also finished third in yards gained on the ground with a backfield of Ajayi and LeGarrette Blount. After a down year, the arrival of DeSean Jackson via trade combined with a healthy Carson Wentz gives this group an excellent shot to return to an elite level.Howard needs that to happen. He isn't a back who can create for himself, so his fantasy outlook is directly tied to the success of his offense and the quality of the ball carriers on the depth chart.Fortunately for him, there'll be little competition for early-down work after Corey Clement, Wendell Smallwood, and Josh Adams each failed to capture lead back duties despite playing three-quarters of a season behind a solid offensive line. That's an area Howard will get an upgrade - the Bears’ blocking was among the league's worst in adjusted line yards, according to Football Outsiders. The Eagles weren't near the top of the league in that category, but they ranked well above Chicago each of the last two seasons. It wouldn't be shocking to see Philly draft a running back to pair with Howard, someone who can step in on third downs and provide the receiving element Howard lacks. As long as that pick isn't too early in the draft, Howard will enter the season as a low-end RB2 with his final numbers dependent on an offensive resurgence in Philly. What's next for Chicago?Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe Bears could also be in the market for a running back when the draft kicks off in late April.Tarik Cohen excelled during Matt Nagy's first year as head coach, catching 71 passes for 725 receiving yards and five touchdowns while adding 444 rushing yards and another three scores as a runner. He's a dynamic weapon that Nagy deployed to perfection, much to the delight of the fantasy community. However, Cohen plays a much different role than Howard did in the offense, so his touches aren't likely to change based on this trade. At the moment, the biggest winner is Mike Davis, who spent the first four years of his career with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks before inking a two-year, $6-million contract with the Bears earlier this month. When the 26-year-old joined the team, rumors were already swirling about Howard being on the trade block, so the possibility of Davis quickly rising the depth chart existed even then. This is certainly exciting for Davis' fantasy potential, but sadly, we have to wait until after the draft before anointing him the starter in Chicago.Davis is a well-rounded back who could handle Howard's touches while contributing in the passing game as well. As a member of a committee with the Seahawks in 2018, Davis averaged 4.6 yards per rush en route to 514 yards and was an active pass-catcher, hauling in 34 balls for 214 yards. Even in a complementary role, Davis reached pay dirt fives times.Much like Howard, Davis doesn't have the skills to carry an offense on his own and would rely on Nagy's system to vault him into the conversation as a top-30 fantasy option. As much as we may want to see that happen, it would be surprising if the Bears didn't come away with a strong challenger from this year’s draft class.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Payton knocks recent HC hiring trend: 'We've got a diversity problem'
Hiring young offensive-minded head coaches has become a trend, with NFL teams attempting to find the next Sean McVay.New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton believes there are flaws in the hiring process because of that pursuit."I think we've got a diversity problem, like this season, what took place, that's hitting us square in the face," Payton said, according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "I think that not a lot was written or discussed about it. There are a handful of coaches that I know that if I was a GM who I would be interested in hiring."So, I think more and more it's season-by-season and 'I want Alvin Kamara.' Well, you can't have him. You can go draft 10 more running backs and be 0-for-10 trying to find him or McVay. And so I see a lot of mistakes made in that process I feel like this long in and so we're excited to play those teams."Eight teams hired new head coaches following the 2018 season. Six are offensive specialists, and the Miami Dolphins' Brian Flores is the only non-white new sideline boss.Payton says teams are missing out on other worthy candidates while focusing on young offensive gurus."(Coaches) probably come of both color and they probably come on defense and on offense," he said. "And they're good leaders. They're great leaders. And, so, if you say 'well I just want the one that coaches quarterbacks and they're on offense,' well, then, you're going to end up with a smaller pool and you'll probably have less of a chance to be right, because already of eight hired there's going to be three that survive three years."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Giants wanted No. 2 pick from 49ers for Beckham
The San Francisco 49ers were apparently in the mix for Odell Beckham Jr. before the receiver was sent to the Cleveland Browns earlier this month. However, 49ers general manager John Lynch said the asking price by the New York Giants made it tough for the two parties to agree to a deal."I think, ironically, the fact that we had the No. 2 pick made it more difficult because they wanted that badly," Lynch said Friday on KNBR Radio, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows. "They wanted two No. 1s. And we weren't willing to part with that. It was too valuable of a pick."The 49ers were reportedly open to moving from the second pick to the No. 6 overall selection, which is currently held by the Giants, but talks broke down when the teams couldn't resolve what or who else would be included in the trade, according to NFL Networks' Mike Garafolo.New York eventually dealt Beckham to the Browns for safety Jabrill Peppers, the No. 17 overall pick, and a third-rounder.Lynch said he wasn't very interested in acquiring Antonio Brown from the Pittsburgh Steelers before the receiver was traded to the Oakland Raiders."We took a quick look and then we just said, 'Hey, we're not interested in that for our team.' That's where we are," Lynch said. "I think we feel pretty good about our receiving corps. I know a lot of people don't share our sentiments."The 49ers declined the player option for receiver Pierre Garcon this offseason, making him a free agent. They also signed Jordan Matthews to a one-year deal.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Best fits for top 10 free agents still available
More than two weeks have passed since free agency opened, and NFL teams have been quick to snap up talent on the open market. As a result, there are few big-name players still looking for work. Here, we find a perfect new home for each of the 10 best remaining free agents.Ndamukong Suh ➡️ Los Angeles Chargers2018 stats: 4.5 sacks, 59 total tackles, 4 TFLSuh wants to stay on the West Coast and is in the ring-chasing phase of his career. The Chargers tick both these boxes for the defensive tackle, who would also fill one of the few significant needs on Los Angeles' talent-rich roster. The three-time All-Pro isn't the force he once was, but the Chargers don't need him to be with Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram manning the edge. At just under $12 million in cap space, though, Suh will likely need to accept less than the one-year, $14-million deal he inked with the Rams last offseason.Ezekiel Ansah ➡️ Buffalo BillsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty2018 stats: 4 sacks, 11 total tackles, 3 TFL (7 games)The Bills have quietly been scouring the pass-rushing market this offseason after finishing 2018 with the seventh-fewest sacks in the NFL. Brandon Beane and Co. also know they may not be able to retain their top pass-rusher, Jerry Hughes, in free agency next year. Ansah would plug a hole, provide much-needed depth, and allow Buffalo to trade Hughes at some point or let him walk next March.Jay Ajayi ➡️ Indianapolis Colts2018 stats: 184 rushing yards, 3 TDs, 4.1 YPC (4 games)The Colts already have a three-headed backfield of Marlon Mack, Nyheim Hines, and Jordan Wilkins. Mack cemented himself as Indy's top dog in 2018, while Hines excelled in a pass-catching scatback role. Still, Frank Reich - who was Ajayi's offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles - loves a strong rotation, and the Boise State product would bring a physicality the Colts' other backs lack. Being a part of a committee should also mitigate concerns about the 25-year-old's long history of knee injuries.Eric Berry ➡️ Cleveland BrownsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty2018 stats: 11 total tackles (2 games)Trading Jabrill Peppers left a hole at strong safety in Cleveland that Berry is perfectly suited to fill - if he's healthy. Although heel injuries shelved the five-time Pro Bowler for most of the last two seasons, he's still the enforcer and veteran leader the Browns need on defense. Cleveland could use a thumper to pair with roaming free safety Damarious Randall in the secondary. Berry has ties to general manager John Dorsey, who previously held the same post with Berry's old team, the Kansas City Chiefs.Jamie Collins ➡️ Baltimore Ravens2018 stats: 104 total tackles, 4 sacks, 13 TFL, 1 FFBaltimore needs a versatile, physical linebacker as much as Collins needs a team that will keep him focused. The former Pro Bowler floundered with the Browns and appeared checked out at times. A return to a contending team should motivate the 29-year-old, who is still a force when he wants to be. The Ravens lost C.J. Mosley in free agency and have a slew of unproven youngsters slated to play major roles at linebacker.C.J. Anderson ➡️ Los Angeles RamsHarry How / Getty Images Sport / Getty2018 stats: 403 rushing yards, 2 TDs, 6.0 YPCAnderson proved to be a capable backup behind Todd Gurley last year, but hasn't generated much interest on the free-agent market. The Rams re-signed Malcolm Brown, yet Anderson is the safer bet to produce if Gurley - who reportedly has knee arthritis - is forced to miss extended periods of time in 2019.Tre Boston ➡️ San Francisco 49ers2018 stats: 79 total tackles, 3 INTs, 9 passes defensed, 1 FFLast offseason, Boston wasn't signed by the Arizona Cardinals until days before training camp. Despite a solid campaign in the desert, Boston's once again struggling to find much of a market. The 49ers, who were expected to pursue Earl Thomas, should take advantage and fill a need that's lingered for years. Boston isn't Thomas, of course, but he's a significant upgrade over the oft-injured Jimmie Ward and Adrian Colbert.Morris Claiborne ➡️ Tampa Bay BuccaneersIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty2018 stats: 57 total tackles, 2 INTs, 14 passes defensedThere are few quality options left for cornerback-needy teams, and the Buccaneers arguably need experienced talent more than any other franchise. Brent Grimes is gone, leaving Carlton Davis (second season) and Vernon Hargreaves (fourth season) as Tampa Bay's top two corners. Claiborne could slide seamlessly into Grimes' veteran role, and with his market cooling off, the cap-poor Bucs could land him at a bargain price.Zach Brown ➡️ Detroit Lions2018 stats: 96 total tackles, 1 sack, 10 TFL, 2 FFDetroit's linebacker group is perhaps the worst in the NFL. Luckily, one of the league's most overlooked players at the position is still available. Brown made the Pro Bowl with the Bills in 2016 after recording 149 tackles, and though his production dropped off in two seasons with the Washington Redskins, he's still capable of being a stabilizing force in the center of the Lions' defense.Muhammad Wilkerson ➡️ Green Bay PackersJoe Robbins / Getty Images Sport / Getty2018 stats: 5 total tackles (3 games)After solidifying their pass-rush early in free agency, the Packers should be turning back to Wilkerson in hopes of patching up their run defense. Wilkerson signed a one-year "prove-it" deal with Green Bay last year, but his expected bounce-back campaign was cut short by a broken ankle. An interior tackle rotation of Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, and Wilkerson looks scary, at least on paper.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Eagles acquire Howard from Bears
The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired running back Jordan Howard from the Chicago Bears, the team announced Thursday. In exchange, Chicago receives a 2020 sixth-round pick that can become fifth-rounder.Howard has long been known to be on the trade block as the Bears seek a different style of starting running back to pair with Tarik Cohen. The Eagles, meanwhile, had a gaping hole at the position after allowing Jay Ajayi to hit the open market.Howard, 24, rushed for over 2,400 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first two seasons in Chicago. But his play regressed last year as he averaged a career-low 3.7 yards per carry, failed to develop his pass-catching skills, and had only two 100-yard rushing games.Entering a contract year, Howard should slide into an early-down role for the Eagles while Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement, and Josh Adams likely compete for the No. 2 job.Veteran back Darren Sproles could return to the Eagles, but he's still evaluating his NFL future.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Nothing has materialized as of yet and Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones admitted this week that the team and player are at an impasse.Lawrence is putting off undergoing shoulder surgery and won't attend team activities until he inks a long-term agreement, according to Watkins. The franchise tag would pay Lawrence $20.5 million for the 2019 season, making him the highest-paid 4-3 defensive end in the NFL.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Patriots DC Schiano resigns 'to spend more time on my faith and family'
New England Patriots defensive coordinator Greg Schiano abruptly announced Thursday that he will step down from his role. Schiano reportedly joined the Super Bowl champions in February, though the hire was never officially announced."I have informed Mr. (Robert) Kraft and coach (Bill) Belichick that I am stepping down from my position at the Patriots," Schiano said in a statement. "This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family. I don't want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities."Belichick also released a brief statement on his defensive coordinator's resignation."I respect coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his contributions to our staff and team. He is a friend who we support completely," Belichick said.Belichick and Schiano are longtime friends, and the eight-time Super Bowl champion raved about him in a SiriusXM interview that was recorded prior to Sunday and aired Thursday."He's a very experienced and outstanding fundamental coach," Belichick said, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. "He's a good teacher and has a lot of experience in both the college and pro game. ... Report: Antonio Brown's power play worries NFL execs
Antonio Brown's ability to essentially force his way out of Pittsburgh caught the attention of NFL executives.Execs are concerned about the ramifications Brown's successful power play could have on other teams, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports, citing high-ranking sources at the NFL owners meetings."It's a problem. Other star players see this and might want to do the same," one source said. "I know the Steelers had a difficult situation and needed to get rid of him. But they had other options."Brown grew unhappy with his relationships with his quarterback, coach, and members of the Steelers' front office, and demanded a trade. Pittsburgh complied and shipped the All-Pro receiver to the Oakland Raiders for a pair of mid-round draft picks."It was a very un-Steeler-like move," a source told Fowler. While team executives may be concerned about copycats, player agents reason that Brown's status as one of the best - if not the best - at his position was a significant factor in his ability to get out of his contract with the Steelers for a new deal with the Raiders."He was crazy enough to pull this off," a veteran agent said. "Most guys aren't wired that way. The contracts and rules are in place."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Bengals owner explains lone vote against pass interference replays
The NFL's move to allow instant replay reviews for pass interference calls earned near-unanimous support from team owners. The one "no" vote out of 32 came from the Cincinnati Bengals' Mike Brown."The reason that we are against it is that it interrupts the game," Brown told a small group of reporters, including ESPN's Katherine Terrell, on Wednesday."It changes the character of the game, in my mind. I think it's in some ways sort of odd to see people all sitting there waiting for somebody in New York to tell them it is or isn't. I'd rather just play the game."The new rule, instituted on a one-year trial, will allow coaches' challenges and booth reviews to cover both offensive and defensive pass interference penalties. For his part, Brown is concerned with making judgment calls reviewable."I don't think that's good for the game. It is the fact that there's going to be officiating error, but it's also the fact that instant replay doesn't always correct it. It actually compounds the problem on occasion," Brown said."There is no answer that, 'Well, we're going to have instant replay and there won't be any more bad pass interference calls.' I don't think so, but we'll see."The Bengals were called for defensive pass interference a league-low four times in 2018 and benefited from the penalty being called on the opposition nine times, according to NFLpenalties.com. Cincinnati also didn't commit a single offensive pass interference penalty last season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Harry Kane wants to be an NFL kicker 'in 10 or 12 years'
Tottenham Hotspur star striker Harry Kane's idea of a fun retirement is apparently trading in one kind of football for another. In an ESPN feature by Bruce Schoenfeld published Wednesday, Kane revealed he would like to try to make it as a kicker in the NFL when his soccer career is over."That's real," Kane said. "Something that in 10 or 12 years I definitely want to try."One of the world's best goal-scorers, Kane says testing his skills in another professional sports league would help satisfy his competitive drive."It goes back to that drive to be the best," he said. "Even if I download a game on my phone, can I be the best in the world? ... If you play in the Premier League and the World Cup and you then play in the NFL, would you then be considered one of the greatest sportsmen ever?"Kane explained how his love of the NFL developed from an admiration for Tom Brady, whom he watched play through YouTube highlights.Strangely, there's a precedent for the 25-year-old to follow. Clive Allen, who was also a forward for Spurs, played in NFL Europe as a kicker during the 1997 season. While going from superstar striker to NFL kicker might not be the best financial move, it appears Kane is serious about eventually blazing a trail across the pond.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals eyeing extension for A.J. Green, owner says
Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown hinted at the likelihood of a contract extension for A.J. Green on Wednesday when asked about the star receiver's future."Oh, I think he's a proven commodity, isn't he?" Brown responded to Fletcher Page of the Cincinnati Inquirer. "The price range for him will be something we can figure out."Green, who's spent his entire eight-year career with the Bengals, has had his name surface in trade rumors this offseason. The seven-time Pro Bowler is entering the final year of his contract and will turn 31 in July. He's finished two of the last three seasons on injured reserve, and the Bengals have simultaneously sunk into an apparent rebuilding phase."It's true with anyone, if they suddenly get an injury that it reduces them," Brown said. "Well that changes the equation, but I never plan on that happening. I like to think that won't happen. If A.J. is healthy, he's as good a receiver as anybody in the league."In nine outings a year ago, Green posted 694 yards and six touchdowns. He's eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in each full season he's played.Meanwhile, Brown said the Bengals won't look to extend quarterback Andy Dalton. The veteran signal-caller has two seasons remaining on his deal.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jachai Polite: Combine debacle 'a major learning experience'
Jachai Polite learned the hard way that the NFL means business. The Florida defensive end was thought to be a lock for the first round of the draft when he attended the NFL Scouting Combine in February. However, disastrous interviews and an admission that he never studied tape of himself quickly diminished his stock."It's been pretty tough, but it's a major learning experience for me, something I've never been through in my life," Polite said Wednesday after taking part in Florida's pro day, according to ESPN's Mike DiRocco. "I just keep learning every day. Nobody in my family has been through anything like this, so I had nobody to help me, really, other than my agent. But I never knew how serious and how mentally tough you had to be for this moment."... At the end of the day they are trying to pay you to play for their team, so I get why they did everything they did. It wasn't really that bad, I just took it the wrong way and was frustrated and stuff."Polite showed up to his pro day hoping to make a better impression on scouts and coaches in attendance, but tweaked his hamstring while running the 40-yard sprint. The Daytona Beach, Fla., native collected 11 sacks for the Gators last year, making him one of the top pass-rushers in this year's draft."In my head I feel like I'm still there (a first-round pick)," Polite said. "Where they pick me, I don't know. But I believe in myself, first and foremost. Whoever gets me, whoever's taking a chance from my terrible interviews and combine, they're going to get a great player. That's all I know."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. AAF majority owner could fold league without support from NFLPA
A month after investing $250 million into the league, new Alliance of American Football majority owner Tom Dundon says the start-up is in danger of folding.Dundon told USA Today Sports' Kevin Allen and Mike Jones that the AAF desperately needs the co-operation of the NFL and its players association to continue."If the players union is not going to give us young players, we can't be a development league," Dundon said. "We are looking at our options, one of which is discontinuing the league."One players' union official said it would violate the terms of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement if active players are lent to the AAF.Dundon expects to reach a decision in the next two days. The AAF just wrapped up Week 7 of a 10-week inaugural season. Chiefs' Reid yet to speak with Tyreek Hill amid investigation
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Tuesday that he's yet to speak with Tyreek Hill since learning that the receiver is under investigation for an alleged battery."I have not, no," Reid said at the NFL's annual owners' meeting, according to Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star. "Our counsel's told us not to do that. I have not been in contact with him."An investigation into the alleged battery involving Hill's three-year-old son at his home is ongoing. Reid said there's been no update since the team released a statement acknowledging the investigation in mid-March.The Chiefs bench boss said he's not yet preparing to be without the All-Pro for the upcoming season but suggested the team would make do if need be."The great thing about football is it's a team sport," Reid said. Kingsbury to give Cardinals cellphone breaks in meetings
Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury will bring teaching methods he used at the college level to his new job.Kingsbury said on Tuesday that he's introducing cellphone breaks into his team meetings."They're itching to get to those things," the 39-year-old said, according to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss."You start to see kind of hands twitching and legs shaking, and you know they need to get that social media fix, so we'll let them hop over there and then get back in the meeting and refocus."Kingsbury said he'll provide breaks every 20 or 30 minutes, taking into account the short attention spans of his players. He instituted a similar policy during his four-year stint as head coach at Texas Tech."I think coming from the college ranks to obviously, those young men, it's got to be quick hitters, 20 minutes at a time, give them a break and get them back in," he said.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders' Davis jokes about firing Gruden to avoid 'Hard Knocks'
The Oakland Raiders are an early favorite to be featured on HBO's training camp miniseries "Hard Knocks," but team owner Mark Davis is already joking about doing anything to avoid the spotlight."I'll just fire Jon (Gruden) and then hire him back," Davis said on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez. The Raiders meet all the criteria to be selected by HBO. Exemptions are granted to teams introducing a new head coach, those that have made the playoffs over the past two seasons, and clubs that appeared on the show within the last decade. The Raiders are eligible, and the team is intriguing because it owns three first-round draft picks next month. Oakland has also added star receiver Antonio Brown and lightning-rod linebacker Vontaze Burfict to play under Gruden, a high-profile head coach.Davis wants the team to focus on improving its 4-12 record in 2018."It would be disruptive," Davis said of the show. "We've got a lot of business to take care of, get ready for the season. I appreciate that they might think we'd be great TV, but we got something to accomplish."Other teams that could be hand-picked for the show are the Detroit Lions, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Redskins.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Giants to investigate possibility of trading for Rosen
The New York Giants will investigate the possibility of trading for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen, though they're unsure if the sophomore will be made available, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports. The NFL rumor mill has been littered with speculation for weeks that Arizona could draft Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, making Rosen dispensable. The Cardinals hold the No. 1 overall pick.New York has given several indications that it's not particularly high on the 2019 quarterback draft class. The Giants appear content to play another season with 38-year-old pivot Eli Manning despite his apparent decline.Rosen is expected to generate considerable trade interest if he's put on the block. The 22-year-old was drafted 10th overall by Arizona a year ago.As a rookie, Rosen completed 55.2 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,278 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 14 games.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL approves challenges, reviews for pass interference
NFL owners voted Tuesday to make pass interference calls and non-calls reviewable for the 2019 season, the league announced. Both offensive and defensive pass interference can be challenged by coaches on the field. The replay assistant will trigger reviews in the final two minutes of halves.Coaches across the league heavily favored the amendments, but they initially faced resistance from the owners. In the end, only the Cincinnati Bengals voted against the changes, sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network."I think we got it right," New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said after the vote passed, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert.Payton was one of the driving forces behind replay expansion. His team lost in last season's NFC championship following a blatant pass interference penalty that was missed late in the fourth quarter."This is what I wanted to happen," Saints owner Gayle Benson told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "(The mishap) will never happen again."In another notable vote, the league tabled a proposal submitted by the Kansas City Chiefs to guarantee each team an overtime possession.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Pederson wants Wentz to be more 'vulnerable' with teammates
Doug Pederson called Carson Wentz a natural-born leader Tuesday, but suggested the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is still growing into the role with his teammates."First of all, I think everybody can be a better teammate," Pederson told ESPN's Tim McManus. "I can be a better coach. I think being a better teammate would just be sometimes being a little more vulnerable, being a little more accessible. You're obviously committed to your craft, to developing your skill, but it's like you want to walk across the aisle and talk to the other side. And that's all part of the maturation process and the growth process, and it's something you learn through time."Wentz was the subject of a critical story at the end of the Eagles' season that painted him as "selfish," "uncompromising," and "egotistical." The article acknowledged his high intelligence and strong work ethic, but questioned his leadership abilities."I watched it with some of the greatest quarterbacks I've ever played with," Pederson added. "I saw it from Dan Marino, I saw it from Brett Favre. For them to become better teammates, they approached the entire team and take on that personality, and then people follow. Carson's got that in him, he's got it in his DNA, and that's what we're excited about."Wentz has seen his last two seasons derailed by injuries, and in both years watched from the sidelines as the Eagles rallied around backup Nick Foles.Eagles general manager Howie Roseman revealed Monday the team will look to discuss a contract extension with Wentz this offseason.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kingsbury: Kyler Murray 'one of the better dual-threat players to ever play'
Kliff Kingsbury provided more fuel to the fire Tuesday regarding rumors over his interest in drafting star prospect Kyler Murray. The Arizona Cardinals head coach - who's widely believed to be targeting Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft - sang the quarterback's praises during the NFL owner's meetings."I mean, I guess it's more what don't you like?" Kingsbury replied when asked what he likes about Murray's game, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "When you watch him play, I mean, he can run it, he can throw it, he's a competitor. ... He's one of the better dual-threat players to ever play."Arizona drafted quarterback Josh Rosen 10th overall in 2018, but speculation of the team's interest in Murray arose when Kingsbury was hired in January. While still at Texas Tech, the head coach said he'd take Murray with the first pick in the draft "if I could."The Sooners prospect is expected to be an early first-round pick and has reportedly drawn interest from a number of other head coaches around the league, including Oakland Raiders bench boss Jon Gruden.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. That's what you've got until you actually meet to sign the contract."If a new deal isn't reached and Lawrence signs his franchise tender, he'll play under a one-year contract worth roughly $20.5 million. The 26-year-old is expected to become one of the NFL's highest-paid defensive players eventually. He's not taking that lightly, and neither is the team."This is a significant thing for not only our franchise but DeMarcus' life," Jones said. "It would make anyone be very, very judicious as they are working through the terms of this agreement. Jets 'very open' to trading down from No. 3 pick
The New York Jets have officially placed the No. 3 overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft on the trading block."We're very open to potentially moving back from three," general manager Mike Maccagnan said Monday, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. "I wouldn't envision us moving up in the draft. I think you can rule that one out. If we end up staying at three and taking a player, we think there are some very good players at three."But we'd definitely be interested if another team came with an offer that we felt was worthy of moving out of the spot. We would definitely consider that. Not to say we're committed to doing it, but we'd definitely be very intrigued by that."The Jets traded up to get the third overall pick last year, using it to select USC quarterback Sam Darnold. The climb to No. 3 from No. 6 cost New York three second-round picks, including this year's second-rounder.With his franchise quarterback now in the fold, Maccagnan could look to recoup some of those spent assets. Tomlin: 'I don't aspire to treat everyone exactly the same'
The Pittsburgh Steelers' internal discord last season won't change the way head coach Mike Tomlin manages his locker room."I treat people fairly," Tomlin said on Monday, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala. "I don't aspire to treat everyone exactly the same."Tomlin, who's entering his 13th season at the helm in Pittsburgh, came under fire last year for his handling of central figures on the team. The Steelers dealt with distractions involving the superstar trio of running back Le'Veon Bell, wide receiver Antonio Brown, and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.Bell didn't report to the Steelers because of a contract dispute. He left the team for good in free agency, signing with the New York Jets. Brown, meanwhile, was eventually traded after asking to be moved following a late-season falling out with Roethlisberger. Both Bell and Brown have since acknowledged they were frustrated with Roethlisberger's pettiness and the treatment he received from coaches and the organization."We can't do this with hostages, we need volunteers," Tomlin said when asked about Brown's departure, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. He used the same phrase in November while addressing Bell's reluctance to play under the franchise tag in back-to-back years."We need good players, good guys who want to be here and if guys can't check those boxes it's probably best for all parties involved to go our separate ways," he added. At one point during the 2018 season, former Steelers tight end Jesse James compared the team to a reality TV show, saying the central characters are like the Kardashians."We all talk too much. We really do," Tomlin said. "It's about talking less and doing more."The Steelers dropped four of their last six 2018 contests to finish with a 9-6-1 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2013.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sean Payton pushes for replay changes: We need to be better
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton believes implementing changes to the NFL's instant replay system would show the league is ready to make amends for the missed call that helped cost his team an appearance in the Super Bowl.Payton also commented on the message that would be sent if officiating changes are not made this offseason."Then ownership is saying they're comfortable with what happened a year ago," Payton said during league meetings in Phoenix, referring to that infamous play when Los Angeles Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman contacted Saints receiver Tommylee Lewis prior to the arrival of a pass, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett.Payton didn't stop there, as he also suggested officials need to be hired as full-time employees."There are a handful of things that we've got to be better at right now," he said. "Our best at playing and our best at coaching are spending 20 hours, 18 hours a day. Our best at officiating, it's their second job. That has to change, because it's too hard, there's too much at stake for someone who's a teacher at a school, who's a florist, an attorney. That's backward thinking."And really as we move forward into the next 10 years, for instance, of our game, where do we want officiating? With all of the technology we have available to us, our fans are closer to the game, our fans are way more in tuned and educated as to the correct calls in the game. And we just need to be better."The NFL's competition committee has brought forth proposals that would allow pass interference calls to be made reviewable, as well as roughing the passer and unnecessary hits against a defenseless receiver calls.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc.
