Brown accused of destroying security camera, Bucs stand behind signing
Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Antonio Brown is accused of destroying a surveillance camera on Oct. 15 in the gated Florida community where he resides, according to a police report obtained by David Ovalle of the Miami Herald.Hollywood Police had probable cause to charge Brown with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor charge, but the president of the homeowners association didn't press charges in fear he "may retaliate against her employees."The police report states the 32-year-old also berated a security guard for failing to allow his guest through. Brown had gate restrictions and was required to be at the gate to escort any guest inside the premises. The Florida native then proceeded to throw his bicycle at the gate arm and tear fliers with COVID-19 guidelines off the wall. The homeowners association president now also states she believes the incidents were too minor to press charges. The incident took place two weeks before Brown signed with the Buccaneers and the team stood by the player in a statement released Monday."We are aware of the reported incident involving Antonio Brown prior to his signing. When Antonio joined us, we were clear about what we expected and required of him. Thus far, he has met all the expectations we have in place," read the statement. In a statement released through a spokeswoman, Brown said he "regrets that he lost his cool that day and he has made amends with the HOA." He has also agreed to pay for the damages to the camera. The NFL is aware of the matter but is not commenting on it, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post. The Bucs added Brown on a one-year deal once he was cleared of his eight-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy.Brown is currently on probation after being arrested in January for a separate incident with a moving truck driver. The NFL veteran is also awaiting a civil trial after being met with a lawsuit in 2019 for a series of alleged sexual assaults.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Chiefs place starting tackles Fisher, Schwartz on COVID-19 list
The Kansas City Chiefs placed three offensive tackles on the COVID-19 list on Monday.Starting tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, as well as Martinas Rankin, landed on the reserve list, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Both Fisher and Schwartz were deemed to be in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 but haven't tested positive themselves, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.High-risk close contacts are placed on the COVID-19 list for at least five days after the date they come into contact with the person who tested positive, so Fisher and Schwartz could be available for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chiefs are coming off of a bye in Week 10.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Brees suffering from collapsed lung, multiple rib fractures
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is dealing with a collapsed right lung and multiple rib fractures on both sides of his chest, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.Brees sustained the injuries over the past two games, fracturing two ribs Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers and three ribs the week prior, Werder adds. The most optimistic timeline for Brees' recovery is two-to-three weeks, but there is hope he'll return in time for the postseason, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano.Brees was replaced by Jameis Winston at halftime Sunday due to injury and did not return. The veteran quarterback was also dealing with a shoulder issue coming into Week 10.Head coach Sean Payton declined to announce who will start at quarterback for the Saints' Week 11 game against the Atlanta Falcons, according to Amie Just of NOLA.com.Winston has completed seven passes for 75 yards this season and would be the most likely candidate to start.Signed by the Saints in the offseason, Winston brings reliable experience to New Orleans' offense. The 26-year-old signal-caller has 70 career starts and 121 passing touchdowns under his belt.Taysom Hill is also an option at quarterback for the Saints, but the team has mostly utilized him as a running threat. The Saints sit in first place in the NFC South.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. How's that for drama? One of the most exciting finishes of this season highlighted a consequential week for the NFL and for bettors. Here are five betting takeaways from Week 10.Cardinals win thriller vs. BillsWhere were you when DeAndre Hopkins made that catch? It's one of those plays that will be etched in the memories of NFL fans - and bettors - for years. For those who bought the Bills early as 2-point underdogs, Sunday's contest was hard to stomach after Buffalo had seemingly iced the game with 34 seconds left. Instead, on the final play from scrimmage, Kyler Murray worked his magic as seemingly only he can:
All charges dropped against former Giants CB DeAndre Baker
The Broward State Attorney's Office announced all robbery charges are being dropped against former New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. The announcement comes after William Dean, the attorney representing three of Baker's alleged robbery victims, was arrested Monday and is facing an extortion charge related to the case, according to New York Daily News' Pat Leonard.Dean was reportedly attempting to extort Baker to pay each of his clients more than $266,000, and, in return, they would stop cooperating with prosecutors in the case or change their initial statements to police, Leonard adds.Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were accused of robbery in May. Prosecutors didn't charge Dunbar due to insufficient evidence, but Baker was initially charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm. The NFL stated that Baker is free to sign with any team but may face discipline if found to be in violation of the league's Personal Conduct Policy, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Giants waived the former first-round cornerback before the start of the 2020 season after he was placed on the Commissioner Exempt List in July.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos' Lock in danger of missing Week 11 due to rib injury
Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio announced Monday that quarterback Drew Lock could miss the Week 11 game against the Miami Dolphins after suffering a rib injury in Sunday's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Andrew Mason of DNVR Sports. "There's a chance of that, with his injury the way it is," said Fangio."It's an injury that is day-to-day where a lot of improvements can be made, and we'll see how he does with it."Lock is dealing with a muscle strain around his ribs, though nothing is broken, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.Fangio added that Lock is sore and his status to practice Wednesday is questionable.Lock has struggled in 2020 following a promising rookie season. The sophomore's 55% completion rate is the league's worst among qualifying quarterbacks, while his 10 interceptions are tied for the second most. Four of those picks came in the loss to Las Vegas.Despite Lock's poor play, Fangio isn't ready to send the young signal-caller to the bench."We're committed to Drew, and the more he can play, the better he'll be," Fangio said, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "He's got to fight through this like most young quarterbacks do at some point in their career, and we're going to continue to play him."Brett Rypien is Lock's primary backup. He started one game while Lock was hurt earlier in the season, leading Denver to a win over the New York Jets.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Flacco to start vs. Chargers, Darnold ruled out
New York Jets head coach Adam Gase announced quarterback Joe Flacco will make his fourth start of the season Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.Starting passer Sam Darnold has been ruled out of the contest as he continues to work his way back from a shoulder injury. The Jets' cautious approach to Darnold's recovery is one that the signal-caller agrees with as he considers his longevity and the possibility of aggravating his injury."Gotta weigh all the factors," Darnold said, according to Cimini. In Darnold's absence, the 35-year-old Flacco has thrown for 659 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Jets are looking for their first win of the season after starting 0-9 prior to their bye last week.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL bad line of the week: Buccaneers' D a tough test for Goff, Rams
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. For the second consecutive week, the one spread that smells fishy falls on Monday Night Football. Here's who I'm hammering in prime time:Bad line of the week: Buccaneers (-3 vs. Rams)I was skeptical of the Buccaneers heading into the season. Whenever you stack a bunch of high-profile names on paper, you typically have to temper expectations. Remember the 2019 Browns? You get the picture.Just past the halfway point of the season, there might not be a better value grab to win the Super Bowl than Tampa Bay. And as strange as it may sound, it has little to do with Tom Brady. It starts with the defense. This unit really came on late last season and has only gotten better in 2020. The Buccaneers currently pace the NFL in total DVOA defense. They rank No. 2 in the league in DVOA pass defense and No. 3 against the run.Tampa's D isn't a solid matchup for a lot of teams, and it's certainly not an ideal draw for quarterback Jared Goff and the Rams' offense.Goff always struggles under duress. He has a 60.4% adjusted completion rate when pressured this year and - oddly enough - a 60.4 passer rating. In 2019, he finished No. 25 in passer rating under pressure and No. 32 when holding the ball for 2.5 seconds or longer. These are all red flags against a Tampa defense that's No. 3 in adjusted sack rate. The Buccaneers should feast here. The Rams have been a nice story this season. They've stood out in arguably the toughest division in the league, entering Week 11 with a 6-3 record while outscoring opponents by 5.3 points per game. The Buccaneers have just been … better, by a decent amount, too.Tampa is outscoring its opponents by seven points per game, which ranks No. 6 in the NFL. That's even more impressive considering the Buccaneers have played the league's fourth-toughest schedule thus far.Whenever you can bet Brady on Monday Night Football, you might want to take the gamble: He's covered 61% of his career games on this stage. The Rams are in for a long, long night.(Odds source: theScore Bet)Alex Kolodziej is a betting writer for theScore. Dolphins, Howard mutually agree to part ways
The Miami Dolphins have released running back Jordan Howard, head coach Brian Flores announced Monday, according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post.Flores described the move as a mutual parting, Schad notes.Howard recorded 33 rushing yards and four touchdowns over five games with the Dolphins. The 26-year-old signed a two-year contract worth up to $10 million this past offseason. The Indiana product was expected to be more of a factor in Miami's run game this season. Instead, Matt Breida, Myles Gaskin, and Salvon Ahmed have leaped over Howard on the depth chart.Howard was a fifth-round selection of the Chicago Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft. He racked up 3,370 yards and 24 touchdowns on the ground during three seasons in the Windy City.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. 10 takeaways from Week 10
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines the significance of those events moving forward.Murray-Hopkins magic Christian Petersen / Getty Images Sport / GettyWhere else to begin than with Kyler Murray, DeAndre Hopkins, and the Hail Mary that lifted the Arizona Cardinals past the Buffalo Bills in what promised to be the most fun game of the weekend? That thrilling finish - as wild and improbable as it was - was really just the nightcap to another outstanding performance by Murray, Hopkins, and the Cardinals. They’ve now won four of their last five and have scored at least 30 points in all five of those games. If it seems like Arizona plays high-scoring heart-stoppers like this every week, that’s probably because the Cardinals have played high-scoring heart-stoppers in each of their last three games. It’ll be a footnote to the Murray-to-Hopkins play, but Bills QB Josh Allen marched his team 78 yards in 12 plays and staked Buffalo to a 30-26 lead with 34 seconds remaining on a terrific 21-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs. The fact that those efforts weren't enough is a testament to the kind of sky's-the-limit potential Murray keeps displaying with both his legs and his arm.Murray seemed to be the perfect fit for head coach Kliff Kingsbury's college-style offense, but he's also taking that expectation to another level with an all-world talent like Hopkins as his top target. The fallout? Arizona's win combined with the Los Angeles Rams' win against the Seattle Seahawks means the Cardinals, Rams, and Seahawks are all 6-3 and locked in a three-way tie atop the NFC West. And, oh, the Cardinals visit the Seahawks on Thursday night in a rematch of the overtime barn burner from Week 7. It's a reason to tune into Thursday Night Football and to stay up until the end.The AFC East is officially a race Mark Brown / Getty Images Sport / GettyThere are repercussions from Buffalo's shocking loss, too. The Bills, which have a bye coming up, are now just half a game ahead of the red-hot Miami Dolphins, winners of five straight. After 20 years of getting rolled by the New England Patriots in the AFC East, both teams appear to have perfectly timed their ascents in the right year. Now it looks like they might battle each other for the division crown.Buffalo has an early-season win over the Dolphins in hand and the two teams will meet again in South Florida in Week 17 - possibly with the division title and serious playoff positioning on the line. But this is what their respective schedules look like between now and then:Week No.Bills (7-3)Dolphins (6-3)11Byeat Broncos (3-6)12Chargers (2-7)at Jets (0-9)13at 49ers (4-6)Bengals (2-6-1)14Steelers (9-0)Chiefs (8-1)15at Broncos (3-6)Patriots (4-5)16at Patriots (4-5)at Raiders (6-3)Buffalo's opponents in the next six weeks are a combined 22-24. Miami's are 23-30-1.Here come the Raiders Ethan Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Las Vegas Raiders beat up the Denver Broncos and have now won four of five to sit two games behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. The Raiders are doing it all with their unheralded defense, which is ranked 30th in DVOA largely because the unit played so poorly earlier in the season. But Vegas hasn't allowed more than 26 points in its last three games thanks in part to players like linebacker Nicholas Morrow - a one-time undrafted free agent who had a sack, two quarterback hits, two passes defensed, and a forced fumble on Sunday. The Raiders happen to be the only team to beat the Chiefs this season. Lo and behold, they face them again next Sunday night in Vegas. What's up with Drew Brees? Chris Graythen / Getty Images Sport / GettyAt last at full strength, Drew Brees and the Saints looked like they were all set to ride into the second half of the season as one of the league's best teams. But then Brees pulled himself from the second half of Sunday's win against the San Francisco 49ers due to a rib injury. Uh oh.It's too soon to tell how severe the injury is and how much it might affect Brees in the days and weeks ahead, but media reports indicate it might not be all that great.

Report: Bridgewater suffered MCL sprain, considered day-to-day
An MRI revealed that Carolina Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered an MCL sprain during Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Bridgewater is reportedly considered day-to-day.The veteran is dealing with some swelling and soreness, and his status is uncertain for Carolina's Week 11 matchup with the Detroit Lions, a source told Chris Mortensen of ESPN.Bridgewater left Sunday's 46-23 defeat with under six minutes remaining after taking a low sack. The 28-year-old is in the midst of his first full season as a starter since suffering a career-threatening knee injury with the Minnesota Vikings in 2016.Bridgewater is second in the league in completion percentage (72.1%) and has thrown for 2,552 yards and 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Carolina Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater exited Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and didn't return due to a knee injury.Head coach Matt Rhule didn't have an update on Bridgewater immediately following the contest, according to ESPN's David Newton. Bridgewater will have an MRI, but the injury isn't believed to be serious, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The quarterback suffered the injury when Buccaneers pass-rusher Jason Pierre-Paul sacked him late in the fourth quarter.
Brees to have MRI, X-ray after injuring ribs in win over 49ers
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will have an MRI and X-Ray after suffering a rib injury during Sunday's 27-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Sean Payton announced, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.The Saints played the entire second half against the 49ers with Jameis Winston at quarterback, while the team listed Brees as questionable. The veteran signal-caller completed 8 of 13 pass attempts for 76 yards and one touchdown before being sidelined at halftime. He was seen on the sidelines with his helmet on but didn't return for the contest."I was not going to be able to be effective," Brees said of his injury postgame. He took a big hit from 49ers defensive lineman Kentavius Street in the first half but remained in the game.
Report: Whitworth suffered torn MCL, damage to PCL
Los Angeles Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth suffered a torn MCL during Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Whitworth's ACL is intact, but the veteran blocker also sustained damage to his PCL and the team will place him on injured reserve. The lineman will receive a second opinion and there is optimism this injury won't end his season, Rapoport adds. The 38-year-old was carted off with what appeared to be a major knee injury after getting tangled up with a Seahawks defender.Whitworth has started 55 of 56 games since signing with the Rams in 2017 after spending the 11 previous campaigns with the Cincinnati Bengals. The two-time All-Pro signed a new three-year contract with Los Angeles this past April.Joe Noteboom took over at left tackle following Whitworth's injury.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kingsbury 'at a loss for words' after Hopkins' Hail Mary TD
Kliff Kingsbury likely had a similar reaction to DeAndre Hopkins' Hail Mary touchdown as those watching the game from home. The Arizona Cardinals head coach was still in shock after his team's improbable score while he spoke to reporters and gave full credit to his star wideout and quarterback Kyler Murray."(I'm) still kind of at a loss for words," Kingsbury said following the victory, according to 12 News' Chierstin Susel. "What a phenomenal play."Hopkins appeared more relaxed than his head coach, admitting his game-winning score was simply a case of throw and catch."2+2 equals four," Hopkins said, according to team reporter Darren Urban. "Go downfield, throw it up."It was on three people. They were in position. It was just a better catch by I."Arizona moves into first place in the NFC West with the victory, improving its record to 6-3. Vikings-Bears betting trends and player props
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. You wouldn't know it by looking at the teams' records, but the Vikings (-3, 43.5) are surging into Monday's contest against the struggling Bears, losers of three straight after a 5-1 start to the season. Here are our favorite trends, props, and bets for Monday night.Betting trendsFor years, Mike Zimmer was one of the best coaches to bet as a favorite. That hasn't been true as of late, as the Vikings are 2-6-1 against the spread in their last nine as chalk. They're also 1-3-2 ATS in their last six games against the Bears with a four-game losing streak outright. This prime-time spot doesn't help matters, either. Minnesota is 2-10-1 ATS on Monday night since 2010, while Kirk Cousins is famously 0-9 ATS in his career in that spot and 7-15-1 ATS in all prime-time games, including 3-6-1 ATS with the Vikings. Bears quarterback Nick Foles is 8-4 ATS under the lights, outperforming the spread by 6.5 points per game. The trends are incredibly strong to the under in this one, too. Chicago is 12-3 to the under in its last 15 home games and 11-4 to the under after a loss since Matt Nagy took over in 2018. The Bears are also 10-3 ATS in their last 13 divisional games and 7-3 to the under in their last 10, while the Vikings are 8-4 to the under in their last 12 against divisional foes. For whatever reason, Monday night has drawn the best out of defenses in recent years. The under is 22-10-1 in the last 33 games on Monday night, including a remarkable 15-2 to the under with a total of 46 or lower.Player propsKirk Cousins under 229.5 passing yards (-110)The key to the Vikings' recent success has been taking the ball out of their quarterback's hands. Minnesota is 0-5 this year when Cousins attempts 25 or more passes and 3-0 when he doesn't, including 2-0 in the last two weeks. Some of that is related to game script, though Dalvin Cook's elite play over the last two weeks is clearly a factor.Even if Cousins does get a shot to pad his stats, he'll struggle to do so against a Bears defense allowing the seventh-fewest passing yards per game (218.2). Cousins has averaged 190 passing yards over the last two weeks and should hover around that number on Monday, too.Darnell Mooney over 38.5 receiving yards (-110)Mooney's stats don't scream "star potential," but he's been playing like one in his rookie year. The Bears wideout has posted at least 40 yards receiving in three straight games despite his quarterback missing on a handful of wide-open deep throws, all courtesy of Mooney's exceptional route-running.With offensive coordinator Bill Lazor taking over the play-calling this week, expect a better rhythm to the offense, which should help the timing between Foles and Mooney. Don't be surprised to see even more deep shots this week against a pass defense allowing 287.9 yards per game.Best betBears +160The Vikings have looked like the better team in recent weeks, but it's hard to fault the Bears too much for losses to the Rams, Saints, and Titans. Their offense has been held back by inept play-calling for years, so shifting responsibility to Lazor should have an immediate impact.Since 2017, only six of 41 NFC North games have been decided by three points or fewer, so don't hesitate to take a shot on the moneyline. This is a game the Bears should win, and there's decent value here betting them to do just that.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Report: 'Strong possibility' Texans make Crennel full-time HC for 2021
The Houston Texans are discussing giving interim head coach Romero Crennel the full-time role for 2021, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The reported stop-gap move, which sources told Rapoport is a "strong possibility," would give Houston stability next season and allow it to conduct a traditional in-person search in the 2022 offseason when COVID-19 restrictions are hoped to have been lifted. The 73-year-old served as head coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2005-08 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012.Crennel, who has held various defensive roles on Houston's staff since 2014, is apparently well-liked and respected in the Texans' locker room.If Crennel is retained, vice president of football operations Jack Easterby reportedly would stay on during the one-year transition and could remain in the role if the Texans don't hire a general manager.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ravens-Patriots betting trends and player props
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. One of the more underrated rivalries of the last decade takes center stage this week when the Ravens (-7, 43) travel to face the Patriots, who are underdogs for just the second time in these teams' last 12 meetings dating back to 2004.Here are our favorite trends, props, and bets for Sunday night.Betting trendsThis is a rare spot for New England, which is a home underdog for the first time since 2014 and the fourth time since 2005. The Patriots have caught at least seven points just twice in the last 10 seasons, though they're 9-3 against the spread in that spot under Bill Belichick.Conversely, this is nothing new for Baltimore, which is 11-4-1 ATS in its last 16 as road chalk and 6-1-1 ATS in its last eight giving at least a touchdown on the road. The Ravens are also 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven against clubs with losing records, winning each game by an average of 18.6 points.Prime time also favors the road team here. New England has lost six straight ATS under the lights, starting with last year's defeat to Baltimore and including last week's three-point win over the Jets. Patriots quarterback Cam Newton is also 6-15 ATS during his career in that spot. Meanwhile, the Ravens are 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 prime-time games with an average scoring margin of +7.6 points.Could that New York win be the tuneup New England needed? The last seven teams to beat the Jets went 5-2 ATS in their following game, while the Patriots are 8-1 ATS after beating their division rival since 2015.Player propsJakobi Meyers over 49.5 receiving yards (-110)You might think this would be the perfect opportunity to fade Meyers after his breakout game against New York, right? Not at this number. For whatever reason, oddsmakers are still skeptical of his ability to rack up yardage with Julian Edelman out and few playmakers to compete with.Meyers has now posted yardage totals of 60, 58, and 169 in the last three weeks as Newton's main option, earning a 40.5% market share of his team's targets and 65.9% market share of New England's air yards during that stretch, per 4for4. Both lead all receivers over the last three weeks. Expect Meyers to be targeted early and often Sunday against a thinning Ravens secondary.Marquise Brown to score a touchdown (+175)Speaking of thinning secondaries, the Patriots' pass defense is in trouble. With Stephon Gilmore out last week, fellow corner J.C. Jackson allowed two touchdowns in coverage to former Ravens speedster Breshad Perriman. New England has now allowed 10 scores to opposing wideouts this year, tied for the 10th-most by any team.Brown has mostly had a year to forget, but he's an ideal threat to break one open against the Patriots as one of the league's fastest receivers. If Gilmore misses another game, Jackson will have his hands full Sunday night.Best betRavens -7These Patriots simply aren't good, as evidenced by their 1-4 ATS/SU record over the last five weeks, and it's taking the market a while to catch on. New England's air-tight secondary was its one redeeming quality entering this year, but that's quickly become a liability with Gilmore shelved. The Ravens rarely mess around against inferior competition. Given the bad blood in this matchup, it's unlikely they'll lay an egg here, either. Bet Baltimore to blow this one open.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. We split on last week's player props, but this Sunday's card is loaded. Here are the Week 10 plays that should be on your radar.Mike Williams over 50.5 receiving yardsWilliams is starting to look like the No. 2 receiver the Chargers envisioned when they drafted him three years ago. The Clemson product has recorded five-plus catches and 80-plus yards in three of his last four games while also scoring three touchdowns. The 26-year-old is intriguing here because he could get past this total with one or two catches. He's averaging 9.8 yards per target and 17.1 yards per reception, ranking No. 9 and 17 in those categories, respectively, among receivers this season. He'll shatter this total against the Dolphins.Lamar Jackson over 199.5 passing yards and longest reception over 33.5 yardsJackson could really use a big game here. Although the Ravens still have the makeup of a contender, the reigning MVP's production pales in comparison to his numbers last season. The dual-threat quarterback is largely responsible for Baltimore's passing offense ranking just No. 23 in DVOA, a year after grading out as the league's best. Jackson hasn't logged a quarterback rating better than 100 since Week 4.Sunday night's prime-time clash against the Patriots could be an ideal get-right spot for the Ravens' passing offense. New England is uncharacteristically last in the NFL in explosive pass rate allowed, and No. 30 in DVOA passing defense. This isn't the same unit that was around for all those Super Bowl runs.Look for Jackson to hush the naysayers with a couple of big plays through the air.Stafford under 275.5 passing yardsThere's a significant step up in competition here for Stafford. He's faced the Jaguars (No. 32 in DVOA pass defense), Falcons (No. 27), and a depleted Vikings secondary over the last four weeks. Stafford draws the Washington Football Team this Sunday, which leads the NFL in pass defense.Expect him to struggle, especially without No. 1 receiver Kenny Golladay due to an injury.Metcalf's longest reception under 28.5 yardsWarning: This bet isn't for the faint of heart.Metcalf has exploded onto the scene during his sophomore season. He's become the Seahawks' No. 1 target while developing into a splash-play machine, recording a 37-plus-yard catch in seven of eight games this season. However, Sunday's matchup against the Rams will be one of the toughest for Seattle's offense all year.L.A. doesn't concede many big gains through the air while ranking No. 1 in explosive pass rate allowed. From a fantasy perspective, the Rams' defense surrenders the second-fewest points per game to wide receivers, making Metcalf a rare fade in this spot.(Odds source: theScore Bet)Alex Kolodziej is a betting writer for theScore. Seahawks promote Harrison, rule Carson, Hyde out
Seahawks running backs Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde will miss their third straight game after Seattle ruled them out for Week 10 against the Los Angeles Rams.Carson and Hyde suffered foot and hamstring injuries, respectively, against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7.However, the Seahawks will receive a boost on the defensive side of the ball, as they promoted veteran defensive tackle Damon Harrison to the active roster ahead of Sunday's contest. Seattle signed Harrison to its practice squad in early October.Carson's and Hyde's absences leave DeeJay Dallas, Alex Collins, and Travis Homer to split backfield duties versus the Rams. Dallas has scored a touchdown in back-to-back contests, while Collins played 31% of the Seahawks' offensive snaps last week in his first game action since 2018.Seattle made a number of other roster moves Saturday. The team placed defensive tackle Bryan Mone on injured reserve, activated defensive back Neiko Thorpe from IR, and ruled pass-rusher Benson Mayowa out for Week 10.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 10 Pros vs Joes: Public loves the Packers as big favorites
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. Before you make your NFL bets this weekend, it's worth knowing which side other bettors are backing - especially on games drawing sharp action. We talked to Jay Rood, Bet.Works' chief risk officer and theScore Bet's head trader, to see how sharps and public bettors are playing the Week 10 slate.Chargers @ Dolphins (-2, 48), 4:05 p.m. ETThe biggest liability this week is on the Chargers, who are drawing sharp attention despite public interest on the Dolphins.Los Angeles opened as a 3-point underdog but has been bet down to +2 after a 20-to-1 advantage in money spent throughout the week. Yet Miami had seen roughly 60% of the bet slips entering the weekend, setting up a classic Pros vs. Joes matchup on Sunday.Surprisingly, there's been a steady amount of parlay activity for both sides, which should help mitigate the potential damage for books."That's kind of a parlay killer either way," Rood said. "Which is good for us."Jaguars @ Packers (-13, 48.5), 1 p.m.No team has drawn more parlay activity than the Packers, who are unsurprisingly pulling a ton of public money as big favorites over the lowly Jaguars. The spread bets on both sides have actually been fairly even from a money perspective, even though three times as many tickets are on Green Bay. In parlays, the Packers are drawing eight times as many tickets with a 13-to-1 advantage in money, and that could rise come game day."As long as this game stays under 14, I think the public is not going to be able to help themselves," Rood said. "We're going to need some magic from Jacksonville."Texans @ Browns (-3.5, 46), 1 p.m.Another team earning support from the public this week is the Browns, who are being bet every which way as short favorites against the Texans.Cleveland had seen eight times as many tickets entering the weekend with an astounding 70-to-1 advantage in money bet, though volume was relatively low. Still, bettors also played the Browns in parlays with a 10-to-1 edge in money bet and even laid a more sizable wager on the moneyline at -170."It's kind of surprising to see this much public support for the Browns," Rood said.Broncos @ Raiders (-4, 50.5), 4:05 p.m.Another active game for the public is this AFC West showdown, in which bettors are targeting both sides in different ways. The Raiders are the more popular play, drawing five times as many parlay slips and twice as many straight bets with a similar money advantage in both. Yet 70% of moneyline bettors are playing the Broncos (+170), with enough money overall to nudge this line from +5 to +4 as of Saturday. The wiser play might be to just take the points. Denver is 8-4 against the spread in its last 12 games as a road underdog, though it's just 4-8 straight up over that stretch.(Odds source: theScore Bet)C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Bears' Montgomery out vs. Vikings due to concussion
The Chicago Bears have ruled out running back David Montgomery for Monday night's game against the Minnesota Vikings due to a concussion.Montgomery suffered the injury in Week 9 against the Tennessee Titans and hasn't been practicing this week.Elevating Lamar Miller from the practice squad in time for Monday's game is an option, head coach Matt Nagy said on Saturday."To me, there's an excitement of the possibility of him being able to fill a role for us," Nagy said.Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce are also available at running back for the Bears, and the team has been using receiver and returner Cordarrelle Patterson at the position.Chicago ranks third-last in rushing with 741 yards this season. Montgomery has been struggling in his second year with just 472 rushing yards and one score through nine games. He's averaging 3.6 yards per carry.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. David Johnson placed on injured reserve
The Houston Texans have placed running back David Johnson on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday.Houston also placed linebacker Dylan Cole on the reserve list. Both players will miss a minimum of three games as a result.Johnson was ruled out of the team's Week 10 matchup against the Cleveland Browns after leaving last week's contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a concussion. The 28-year-old is playing in his first campaign with the Texans after being traded by the Arizona Cardinals in March.Johnson has rushed for 408 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 16 receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown through eight games this season.Duke Johnson is expected to see an increase in playing time for the Texans. Buddy Howell and C.J. Prosise could also serve bigger roles.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Bills' Norman tests positive, 3 close contacts out vs. Cardinals
Buffalo Bills cornerback Josh Norman tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday and will not play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, the team announced.Three other players - tight end Tyler Kroft, cornerback Levi Wallace, and safety Dean Marlowe - were identified as close contacts. They were also placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and will not travel to face Arizona. The Bills replaced their lost players by elevating linebacker Darron Lee, cornerback Daryl Worley, wide receiver Jake Kumerow, safety Josh Thomas, and cornerback Dane Jackson from the practice squad.Buffalo, which sits atop the AFC East at 7-2, is set to travel to Arizona on Saturday afternoon.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns activate Chubb ahead of game vs. Texans
The Cleveland Browns have activated Nick Chubb from the injured reserve, and the star running back will play in Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Chubb has been out since Week 5 due to an MCL sprain in his right knee. His return should bolster the Browns' sixth-ranked rushing offense. He had accumulated 335 rushing yards and four touchdowns over the four games prior to suffering the injury in Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys.Kareem Hunt has carried the load in Chubb's absence, rushing for 529 yards and three touchdowns through eight games. The Texans own the league's second-worst run defense, allowing 159.5 yards on the ground per game.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Roethlisberger activated off COVID-19 list, will play vs. Bengals
The Pittsburgh Steelers activated quarterback Ben Roethlisberger from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday ahead of their game against the Cincinnati Bengals.Head coach Mike Tomlin said Friday that Roethlisberger was expected to be moved off the list and play in the AFC North showdown, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala. The veteran quarterback was one of four Steelers players placed on the COVID-19 list after reportedly being deemed a high-risk close contact.Offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins, running back Jaylen Samuels, and linebacker Vince Williams were also activated Saturday.Roethlisberger hasn't been able to practice throughout the week but the Steelers will hold an extended walk-through Saturday once he's activated.Tomlin also said the quarterback's knee injuries won't be an issue, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor. Roethlisberger injured both knees last Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys but was able to go to the team facility to seek treatment.Roethlisberger is currently in the midst of an impressive comeback campaign, throwing 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions as he commands the NFL's only remaining undefeated team. The 8-0 Steelers are slated to take on rookie quarterback Joe Burrow and the Bengals this Sunday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Week 10: Josh Allen vs. Kyler Murray should be fun
A rundown of the best games and most interesting trends for Week 10 of the NFL. All times Eastern.Marvelous matchupBills (7-2) at Cardinals (5-3), 4:05 p.m.Hey, look, it's a matchup involving a couple of dynamic, big-play quarterbacks who possess an ability to scramble and make plays outside the pocket. This ought to be entertaining.Buffalo's Josh Allen and Arizona's Kyler Murray have their issues with consistency, but when they're on, they can put on quite a show. The Bills went pass-heavy in the first half last week against Seattle, and they shot out to a 24-7 lead. Allen finished with 415 passing yards, with seven pass-catchers hauling in a reception of 20 yards or more, which is something that hadn't happened in the NFL in five years. Allen also ran for a TD.The Cardinals lost their barn burner Sunday to the Dolphins, but Murray did a little bit of everything, including passing for 283 yards and rushing for 106 more. He's on pace to rush for more than 1,000 yards this season. Both teams also have terrific receiving threats in Stefon Diggs (Bills) and DeAndre Hopkins (Cardinals), which means that in this season of record scoring, this game certainly seems likely to do its part.Pressure releaseSeahawks (6-2) at Rams (5-3), 4:25 p.m.When pressured by the defensive rush, Jared Goff's passer rating is 36.7, per PFF. Only Drew Lock (32.7) and Baker Mayfield (29.8) are worse. When not pressured, Goff's passer rating is a robust 114.2, which ranks 10th. Mark Brown / Getty ImagesThe Seattle Seahawks only generate pressure 20.4% of the time, according to Pro Football Reference, which ranks 22nd in the NFL. The Seahawks have also given up the fourth-most yards after the catch in the league (1,141), while the Los Angeles Rams rank second in YAC per completion (5.7).What I'm getting at is that this appears to be a bad matchup for Seattle, though that ought to create lots of opportunities for hero ball from Russell Wilson. What are they waiting for?Bengals (2-5-1) at Steelers (8-0), 4:25 p.m.In their last two games, the Pittsburgh Steelers came from behind to beat Baltimore and Dallas on the road. They did it by spreading teams out and having Ben Roethlisberger work with a quicker tempo while playing what The Athletic's Mark Kaboly has described as "backyard football."The question, then, is why don't the Steelers let Roethlisberger play like this all the time?Rookie QB battle alertChargers (2-6) at Dolphins (5-3), 4:05 p.m.Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers is 1-6 as a starter, but you wouldn't know it by the way he plays. Herbert has a better Total QBR than Tom Brady, Lamar Jackson, Roethlisberger, and Philip Rivers; he's just stuck playing for the Chargers, who never seem to earn a lead they can't squander. This week, Herbert is faced with an intriguing matchup against a Miami defense that's ranked eighth in DVOA against the pass. Also, Herbert's quarterbacking counterpart will be Tua Tagovailoa, who was drafted one spot ahead of him and is already being anointed as the Next Big Thing even though he's attempted only 52 passes. Chris Coduto / Getty ImagesTagovailoa provided a thrilling glimpse of his dual-threat potential in last week's joyride of a victory against the Cardinals. Herbert, too, has flashed greatness since he replaced Tyrod Taylor in Week 2. The next most interesting thing about the Chargers is to see what they might come up with to blow another close game. This doesn't seem fairJaguars (1-7) at Packers (6-2), 1 p.m.The Jaguars are ranked dead last in defensive DVOA, pass defense DVOA, and pass defense DVOA on first down, per Football Outsiders. They're also last in dropback expected points added per play according to Ben Baldwin's database. That's quite a feat! It's also less than ideal when having to play Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau in November. You've been warned:
Hopkins: 'Receivers should get counted yards' on DPI penalties
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins thinks the NFL should credit receivers who draw pass interference calls."Receivers should get counted yards for penalties," Hopkins said Friday, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.Though Hopkins was held to just three catches for 30 yards in last Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins, he drew four defensive pass interference penalties - all of them by cornerback Xavien Howard. One of the flags was offset due to an offensive penalty, but the other three resulted in 42 yards."When a guy has to hold you when the ball is being thrown your way every time, I think that's a sign of respect, man," Hopkins added.Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury mentioned that despite the timid stats against the Dolphins, Hopkins had a big impact on the game."It's a positive gain," Kingsbury said. "In the NFL, as opposed to college, it's a spot foul and those can be huge. We've got to get Hop the ball more, he has to be targeted more, but I think he had seven targets, drew four pass interference, and had three catches and that's impacting the game in a major way, and that's what he does."The All-Pro receiver entered Week 9 topping the league in receptions and yards but lost those leads to Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Hopkins has racked up 60 catches for 734 yards and three scores through eight games this season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Nagy hands Bears' play-calling duties to OC Lazor
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy is giving up play-calling duties.Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor will replace him on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings, the head coach announced Friday, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic."It allows me to really look at all three phases from the head coaching position and focus on that," said Nagy, who's been calling Chicago's offensive plays since he was hired in 2018. "I'm excited to let Bill take this over and he has experience in this role. I think he's gonna do a great job."We need to do what's best for us, not what's best for Matt Nagy," he added, according to Patrick Finley of Chicago Sun-Times.Lazor joined the team this offseason to replace Mark Helfrich, who was fired after the 2019 campaign. The offensive coordinator spent the 2019 season as an analyst at Penn State.Nagy didn't confirm whether Lazor will take over the role permanently moving forward."I hate to say anything is permanent, but (we'll) just try to really focus on this week with the Vikings and keep it at that," he said, per Dan Wiederer of Chicago Tribune. The Bears' offense thrived in Nagy's first season with the team but the unit hasn't been able to replicate that success since. Chicago, which is currently on a three-game losing streak, ranks 29th in both points scored and yards gained per game.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Eagles' Sanders, Jeffery, Johnson to be active vs. Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles are set to welcome back some key starters Sunday.Running back Miles Sanders, wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, and right tackle Lane Johnson will be active against the New York Giants.
Lions' Golladay ruled out vs. Washington with hip injury
The Detroit Lions will be without Kenny Golladay for a second consecutive game after ruling the receiver out for Sunday's contest against the Washington Football Team due to a hip injury.Golladay suffered the injury in Detroit's Week 8 contest against the Indianapolis Colts and hasn't practiced since.Injuries have plagued the 26-year-old receiver for much of the 2020 season. He sat out the first two games of the campaign due to a hamstring issue.Golladay has recorded 20 receptions for 338 yards and two touchdowns in five games this season after leading the NFL with 11 receiving touchdowns last year. The 3-5 Lions have struggled to get much going without Golladay on the field, losing all three of their contests without him in the lineup. Sunday's game will see Detroit face a Washington club that owns the league's No. 1 passing defense.Selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Golladay is in the last year of his rookie contract.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 10 best bets: Dolphins, Bengals still undervalued
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section.Well, that didn't go as planned. The Buccaneers' putrid effort against the Saints put a major stain on last week's 1-2 mark, bringing my record to 8-9-1 on the year. Here are my best bets for Week 10.Eagles (-4, 44) @ Giants, 1 p.m. ETI'm not buying what the Eagles are selling. Even with a few key players returning from injury, I'm not sold that they're fully healthy - we've already seen players return too quickly for this team only to get shelved soon after. I also don't buy that a full complement of weapons will change the way Carson Wentz plays, as his league-leading 12 interceptions have come more from bad habits than a bad supporting cast. What I do buy is the Giants' defense, which ranks second in takeaways (15) and forced five turnovers in last week's win over Washington. New York's defense has kept games close even as its offense has faltered, mostly due to its own turnover issues. Philly has the second-worst turnover differential (-7) in the NFL, though, and that won't change just because a few skill-position players are back on the field. The Eagles won by one point when these clubs met in Philadelphia three weeks ago, and the Giants have been a better team this year by advanced metrics. This line should be much closer to pick 'em, so give me the points all day long.Pick: Giants +4Chargers @ Dolphins (-2, 48), 4:05 p.m.This line has yo-yoed throughout the week as attrition has taken its toll on both sides. First, the Dolphins placed Kyle Van Noy and Christian Wilkins on the COVID-19/reserve list, likely keeping them out for Sunday. Then, on Friday, the Chargers ruled out Joey Bosa and Justin Jackson with injuries.Still, I loved Miami coming into the week, and I'm happy to grab this team as short chalk with the way it's played as of late. The Dolphins have won four straight against the spread behind a tenacious defense, which ranks seventh in DVOA over that stretch with five interceptions, eight forced fumbles, and two touchdowns. This could be the toughest test of Justin Herbert's young career, which has been defined by brilliant play and disappointing results. If the Dolphins' chaotic defense rattles the rookie quarterback, the Chargers may not even have a lead to squander this time around.Pick: Dolphins -2Bengals @ Steelers (-7.5, 47), 4:25 p.m.If you aren't already backing the Bengals every time they're an underdog, I'm not sure what to tell you. They're 9-2-2 ATS in their last 13 as underdogs and 11-2-1 ATS in their last 14 as road 'dogs. They're also an NFL-best 6-1-1 ATS this year through eight games, with six of those decided by one possession.Much of that is thanks to the play of Joe Burrow, who's coming into his own over the last few weeks and will have had two full weeks to prepare for the Steelers' defense. Compare that to Ben Roethlisberger, who narrowly avoided serious injury last week and spent this week on the COVID-19/reserve list.Pittsburgh hasn't lost a game this year, but five of its eight victories have been decided by seven points or less, including last week's nail-biter against the lowly Cowboys. The Bengals are a better team, and they're two weeks removed from dispatching a Titans club that took the Steelers to the wire the week before. Pittsburgh should win this game, but it doesn't profile as a blowout.Pick: Bengals +7.5(Odds source: theScore Bet)C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Bengals' Mixon doubtful, Atkins out vs. Steelers
The Cincinnati Bengals listed running back Joe Mixon as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to a foot injury, head coach Zac Taylor announced Friday, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. The Bengals were confident Mixon, who's already missed two games, would be ready for the AFC North showdown. But with the doubtful designation, Mixon is likely to be sidelined again."He wants to play more than anything, sometimes you have to protect the player from himself," said Taylor.Cincinnati will also be without defensive tackle Geno Atkins for personal reasons.Giovani Bernard will continue to start amid Mixon's absence. Belichick defends recent draft record: 'I've seen a lot worse'
The New England Patriots are in an unfamiliar position at the season's halfway point, sitting at 3-5 and third in the AFC East behind the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Some believe New England's woes are partially due to poor recent drafting, but head coach Bill Belichick strongly pushed back against that notion Friday."I'd say the most important thing to me is winning games," Belichick said, according to Nick O'Malley of Mass Live. "I'm not gonna apologize for our record over the last 20 years. I've seen a lot worse."Belichick seemingly signaled his displeasure when asked about the Patriots' recent draft history with an awkward pause:
NFL Week 10 teaser: Sell high on Vikings, Dolphins
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. As promised, we didn't even need the points in Week 9. Both the Giants and Dolphins were outright winners as we cruised to one of the easier teaser hits we'll ever have.Let's continue our winning ways in Week 10.Chargers @ Dolphins, Nov. 15 @ 1 p.m. ETLine: Chargers +2.5Teaser line: Chargers +8.5Death, taxes, and the Chargers finding creative ways to lose. I'm not sure what was worse, Anthony Lynn's time management or the team throwing back-to-back fades with a chance to walk it off against the Raiders. Two things remain very clear about this team: It's always competitive, and Lynn has to go. The Chargers sit 2-6, with an average margin of defeat at a meager four points. They've yet to lose a game by more than a touchdown. This team plays well on both sides of the ball but is consistently undone by bad situational coaching. The talent gap between these two clubs is marginal, with the Chargers arguably even holding a slight edge. But what makes them so dangerous to back at +2.5 is the massive coaching disparity. Brian Flores continues to do a remarkable job with the Dolphins, while Lynn is on borrowed time.Miami is playing as well as it has all season and has its own rookie quarterback to be excited about in Tua Tagovailoa, but Justin Herbert is simply on another level right now. He's averaging three touchdowns a game over the last five weeks and over 300 yards per contest on the season, and he has a point to prove here against the Dolphins, who passed on him in the draft. There's a risk at +2.5 due to the Chargers' incompetent coaching staff, but at +8.5, I feel incredibly comfortable with their ability to at least keep this a one-score game.Vikings @ Bears, Nov. 16 @ 8:15 p.m.Line: Bears +3Teaser line: Bears +9If you read yesterday's parlay article, you'd see I'm all over the Bears this week. Not only is it a great buy-low spot on Chicago, but it's the perfect spot to sell high on the Vikings, who've hit their stride of late as a result of their success running the ball. When Dalvin Cook gets going, Minnesota is able to sustain long drives, control the clock, and lighten the load on Kirk Cousins. Cook has been playing at an MVP level over the past two weeks, but that success has come against two of the league's worst run defenses. The Bears don't fall into that category, ranking seventh in efficiency against the run, and they've had Cook's number, limiting him to just 2.5 yards per carry in three career meetings and just 2.0 in two games at Soldier Field.Minnesota's ability to run the ball of late has also sheltered its defense by keeping the unit on the sideline. Supposed defensive improvements over the past month are being overblown as a result. The Vikings still can't get an ounce of pressure on the quarterback, placing added strain on a thin secondary. With a clean pocket to throw out of, Nick Foles and this struggling Bears offense will find a lot more success Monday night against the Vikings, who've had a horrible time at Soldier Field in the Cousins era.Full teaser: Chargers +8.5, Bears +9 ($110 to win $100)(Odds source: theScore Bet)Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. Just how good are the New Orleans Saints?
The New Orleans Saints' 38-3 obliteration of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday served as something of a reminder: Don't forget the Saints are one of the NFL's best teams. Before last week's win, it had been tricky to get a read on New Orleans for a few reasons.Yes, the Saints were 5-2, but they had started 1-2 and were giving up an average of 28.1 points per game. Yes, they had won four straight, but all four of those victories came against sputtering teams, and twice they needed overtime to get it done. Yes, quarterback Drew Brees played multiple games without Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders - two of his top receivers - but it seemed he'd padded his stats with a lot of short throws. Then came last week, when New Orleans played one of the best games authored by any team in recent memory. No, really. According to Football Outsiders' DVOA metric - a per-play measurement that factors in game situations and opponents - the Saints played the best game of any team this century and the fifth-best since 1985. That's a heckuva win.The victory also secured a season sweep of the Buccaneers - no small matter for conference seeding, especially since the race for the NFC South title is shaping up to be a two-team affair. In fact, if the season were to end right now, the Saints would be the NFC's No. 1 seed. The Los Angeles Rams would be the No. 7 seed, which goes to the final playoff qualifier. The Rams are just one game worse than New Orleans in the standings. Icon Sportswire / Getty ImagesThe Saints obviously won't play as well they did against the Buccaneers every week, but Sunday's beatdown did reveal how dangerous their offense can be when operating at something close to full strength. With Thomas and Sanders back in the lineup, Brees no longer had to rely so heavily on running back Alvin Kamara.Kamara's 60 receptions are tied for third-most in the league, regardless of position. But 542 of his 565 receiving yards have come after the catch - far and away the most in the NFL, according to Sports Info Solutions. And, according to Next Gen Stats, Brees' average depth of throw (5.8 yards) is the lowest in the league. He's attempted just seven deep throws (20 air yards or more) all year.A few weeks back, I openly mused whether it might be time to worry about Brees, given how reliant he'd become on short, quick throws. That thought might have been premature, if not completely misguided. On intermediate-range throws (10-19 air yards), Brees has 42 completions on 67 attempts in 2020. He's ninth in the league in both of those categories, according to Sports Info Solutions - hardly indicative of the work of a Checkdown Charlie. What's becoming clear is that in the context of the Saints' offense - and particularly when he has a full complement of pass-catchers -Brees is making things work. Take a look at this passing grid from Sunday night:NFL NextGen Stats Brees completed throws to 12 different targets last week. He was sacked just once and hit only three times. And he did all this against a defense that entered the game as the league's most efficient unit - both overall and against the pass.Defensively, the Saints exploited the absence of Buccaneers left guard Ali Marpet to get plenty of pressure on Tom Brady. Of course, Brady is renowned for getting rid of the ball faster than pass-rushers can get to him. But even that proved tough thanks to the work of New Orleans' linebackers and secondary; those players allowed others like defensive end Trey Hendrickson to get at Brady without help from additional blitzers.
NFL Rookie of the Year rankings: Burrow, Herbert battling for top spot
The NFL's offensive and defensive Rookie of the Year races are shaping up as the 2020 season passes its midpoint. Here's a current look at the top five candidates for each award.Offensive Rookie of the Year5. Tristan Wirfs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Erick W. Rasco / Sports Illustrated / GettyRemember when right tackle was a concern for the Buccaneers?Wirfs is not only this season's best rookie offensive tackle, but he's also among the NFL's top players at his position overall. The Iowa product has played every offensive snap this year (603) while committing just three penalties and allowing 16 pressures.Though it's unlikely Wirfs will have a real shot at the award as an offensive lineman, he should at least be considered for the honor after excelling as both a pass-protector and run-blocker against some of the league's best defensive linemen.4. James Robinson, Jacksonville JaguarsRobinson ultimately gets the edge over fellow rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire because he's done more with less around him. While Edwards-Helaire is surrounded by superstars in Kansas City, Robinson - an undrafted rookie - carries the load for a star-starved Jacksonville squad.Additionally, though the Chiefs' first-round runner currently has more rushing yards than Robinson, he's also played in one more game. Robinson, meanwhile, leads all rookie rushers in running attempts, catches, yards, and touchdowns per contest.3. Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings Hannah Foslien / Getty Images Sport / GettyIt didn't take long for the Vikings to find a new starting wide receiver after Stefon Diggs' offseason departure. Despite Jefferson's slow start during training camp, he's stepped up as a great complementary weapon alongside Adam Thielen.Jefferson has taken advantage of easier matchups while Thielen gets most of the opposing defense's attention. The explosive wideout currently leads his team - and all rookies - with 627 receiving yards and is second in the league among qualifying pass-catchers with 18.4 yards per reception.2. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles ChargersThe race for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award is likely a two-man competition between Herbert and Joe Burrow. Which one of the front-runners will get the last laugh, though, is a question that will likely persist until the final weeks of the campaign.Herbert has displayed great awareness and athleticism while amassing eye-popping numbers. The freshman signal-caller has completed over 67% of his pass attempts for 2,146 yards and 17 touchdowns against just five interceptions.Though Herbert hasn't been able to translate his stats to wins, all six of his NFL defeats have come by seven or fewer points. He might be close to putting Los Angeles back on the right track.1. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyHerbert edges Burrow in terms of offensive efficiency, but the first overall pick earns the top spot on this list because he's found more answers in his young career playing with less talent.Despite lacking any 2019 Pro Bowlers around him, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner has already matched the Bengals' win total from last season with a 2-5-1 record while posting a historical rookie campaign.Burrow is tied for an NFL-high five 300-passing-yard performances this season and is on pace to surpass Andrew Luck's rookie record of 4,374 passing yards. Additionally, Burrow's 221 completions are the most in league history for a quarterback through his first eight career starts.Honorable mentions: Chase Claypool (Steelers), Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Chiefs), Antonio Gibson (Washington), CeeDee Lamb (Cowboys)Defensive Rookie of the Year5. Jaylon Johnson, Chicago BearsJohnson's played in 618 defensive snaps this season - most among all rookies - and it's not hard to understand why the Bears trust him. He's allowed completions on just half of the 50 targets against him while breaking up 12 passes, which is also the highest mark among first-year defenders.Though Johnson can still improve specific aspects of his game - he has yet to record an interception - his physicality and coverage instincts leave little doubt that he's one of the game's best young defensive backs.4. Jeremy Chinn, Carolina Panthers Sean M. Haffey / Getty Images Sport / GettyChinn is already one of the most important players on the Panthers' rebuilding defense. The second-rounder tops all first-year players with 67 tackles, which was also a team high before he was sidelined in Week 9 due to injury. His versatility has been a huge asset for head coach Matt Rhule, who's played Chinn at safety - his natural position - linebacker, cornerback, and even as a runner on a fake punt.3. Patrick Queen, Baltimore RavensQueen's 52 tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles so far - in addition to a 53-yard touchdown - give him a real shot at the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. However, his case takes a hit due to repetitive coverage mistakes and his 12 missed tackles.Yet despite Queen's flaws, his unreal athleticism is a perfect fit for the linebacker-needy Ravens. The former LSU stud is one of the game's most fun young defenders to watch.2. Chase Young, Washington Football Team Patrick McDermott / Getty Images Sport / GettyYoung's overall stats don't jump out of the screen - 20 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and four quarterback hits through seven games - but his impact for Washington goes beyond his numbers. The defensive end often garners double-teams, which helps his teammates get easier matchups.Though Young's mom graded his rookie campaign thus far a C+ because he's not "leading the league in sacks," it appears to be just a matter of time until the second overall pick adds some big plays to his highlight reel. Young remains a favorite to take home the award.1. Antoine Winfield Jr., Tampa Bay BuccaneersWinfield topped our initial rankings, and there's no reason to move him down now as he continues to look like a veteran. No other rookie defender has made his presence felt like the Buccaneers safety, who's been all over the field for one of the NFL's top defensive units. The second-round defensive back is still a work in progress in pass coverage, but he's produced plenty of highlights stopping the run and even pressuring opposing quarterbacks. Winfield's one of just two first-year defenders to record at least 30 tackles, one sack, one interception, and multiple pass breakups through the first nine weeks of the 2020 campaign.Honorable mentions: Julian Blackmon (Colts), Derrick Brown (Panthers), Trevon Diggs (Cowboys)Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Marino finished his Hall of Fame career with 61,361 yards through the air.Rivers is in his 17th NFL campaign.
