Lamar: 'I have to do a better job' getting Brown the ball
Baltimore Ravens receiver Marquise Brown doesn't appear happy with his workload, but quarterback Lamar Jackson is aiming to change that.Brown questioned his usage in a since deleted tweet Sunday following a one-catch performance in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Jackson took responsibility for the wideout's timid production in Week 8."That's one of our key players to our offense," Jackson said Wednesday, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN. "I want to get him the ball, the easiest way and fastest way we can. I have to do a better job of getting it to him."Brown was targeted a team-high seven times per game through the Ravens' first six contests this season, but only two passes were thrown in his direction against the Steelers. The second-year speedster leads Baltimore with 27 receptions and 379 yards. He's also scored two touchdowns."He's a big part of our offense. We need him," Jackson added. "So we got to be better at that, and we'll be fine."The 5-2 Ravens next face the Indianapolis Colts, who own one of football's best defensive units against the pass.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lions place Stafford on reserve/COVID-19 list
The Detroit Lions placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Wednesday.Stafford was around an infected individual who's not connected to the team on Monday and he's considered high risk, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. He'll reportedly be eligible to face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday if the signal-caller continues to test negative throughout the week."We are fine. We are all negative, my husband is negative," Stafford's wife, Kelly, said on her Instagram story. "There was just a certain exposure. So we have been testing since our exposure and we are all negative."The 32-year-old would have to fly to Minnesota on a private plane since he'll still be in the NFL's five-day isolation window when the Lions depart Saturday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. This is the second time Stafford has been added to the reserve group. He was placed on the COVID-19 list in August due to a false positive result. The 32-year-old is the second Lions player to hit the reserve/COVID-19 list in as many days after linebacker Jarrad Davis. The one-time Pro Bowler has completed 61.4% of his passes for 1,916 yards and 13 touchdowns against five interceptions through seven games this season. The NFL's reserve/COVID-19 list is for players who either tested positive for the coronavirus or are quarantining after close contact with an infected person.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bears' Trubisky injured shoulder, will reportedly miss multiple weeks
Chicago Bears backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky suffered a shoulder injury on his lone play during Sunday's overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints, head coach Matt Nagy announced Wednesday, according to Sean Hammond of the Northwest Herald."It's unfortunate and I know that he's bummed out," Nagy said. "He kind of landed on it weird."Trubisky made a 3-yard run on the play during the first quarter. The 26-year-old, who missed Wednesday's practice, is now expected to be sidelined for at least a few weeks, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network."At first, he didn't really even know," Nagy said. "It was something that was lingering and hurting as the night went on."Trubisky missed one game last season due to a left shoulder injury. He underwent offseason surgery to repair the issue. The 2017 second overall pick started the season as the Bears' No. 1 quarterback, but Nick Foles replaced him after Week 3. Trubisky completed 59.3% of his pass attempts for 560 yards and six touchdowns against three interceptions over the team's first three games.Chicago brought in quarterbacks Jake Rudock and Kyle Sloter for a workout on Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Signal-caller Tyler Bray is also on the club's practice squad. The Bears are currently on a two-game losing streak, but they remain positioned for a playoff push at 5-3. They'll face the Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Vikings over the next two weeks before a Week 11 bye.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Kamara dealing with foot injury, expects to play Sunday
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is dealing with a foot injury that limited him in practice Wednesday, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.The injury is not considered major as the Saints prepare for a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Head coach Sean Payton says the team will be careful with Kamara and designated him as "day-to-day," according to The Athletic's Greg Auman. The 25-year-old compared the injury to a stubbed toe. "That shit hurts," Kamara said, according to Underhill. The star running back added that he will play Sunday and expects to practice Thursday.Kamara rushed for 67 yards on 12 attempts, adding nine receptions for 96 yards in the Saints' 26-23 overtime win against the Chicago Bears.Through seven games, the Tennessee alum has rushed for 431 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5 yards per carry. He's also added 55 receptions for 556 yards and three receiving touchdowns.Elsewhere, quarterback Drew Brees was limited in Wednesday's practice due to a right shoulder injury, according to Underhill. The signal-caller downplayed the issue."I'm always limited on Wednesdays," Brees said. "I'm 41 years old. I have a lot of stuff going on. I keep ticking."Star wideout Michael Thomas was limited too as he continues to recover from ankle and hamstring problems.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Giants claim Dante Pettis off waivers
The New York Giants claimed wide receiver Dante Pettis off waivers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.Pettis was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday after they failed to trade him at the deadline. The 2018 second-round pick amassed 467 receiving yards and five touchdowns as a rookie but hasn't replicated that production recently. After being held to 109 yards in 2019, the Washington product has yet to record a catch through five appearances this season. The 25-year-old's workload decreased this year due to the 49ers' offseason additions, which included first-round receiver Brandon Aiyuk.Pettis will join a Giants receiving corps that already features Darius Slayton, Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, and Evan Engram.Tate was absent from Wednesday's practice for undisclosed reasons. Head coach Joe Judge refused to say whether the wideout's absence was related to his comments made during Monday Night Football.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Patriots sign Moncrief to practice squad
The receiver-needy New England Patriots have signed journeyman wideout Donte Moncrief to their practice squad, the team announced Wednesday. The New York Jets most recently inked Moncrief in August, but he was unable to make their final roster. He played for the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018, and the Indianapolis Colts from 2014 to 2017.Moncrief has registered 204 career receptions for 2,561 yards and 21 touchdowns. The 2-5 Patriots have tallied the league's second-fewest passing yards, and veteran Julian Edelman, the team's leading pass-catcher, is out after undergoing knee surgery. Damiere Byrd is the active Patriot with the most receiving yards (272), with N'Keal Harry (172) and running back James White (171) following him.Due to the club's shallow pass-catching corps, New England traded a sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Isaiah Ford on Tuesday. Ford has logged 18 receptions for 184 yards and no touchdowns over seven games this season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Packers' Jones questionable for TNF
The Green Bay Packers listed starting running back Aaron Jones as questionable for Thursday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.Jones was a limited participant in practice Monday and Tuesday with a calf issue. He's been sidelined for the past two weeks with the injury.Jones' availability is important as the Packers have already placed backups Jamaal Williams and A.J. Dillon on the COVID-19/reserve list.Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said on Tuesday he'll give the rusher "up to game time" to determine his availability before the team looks elsewhere for options. The next players on the depth chart are running backs Tyler Ervin and Dexter Williams. Ervin has 10 career carries in five years, and Williams has five rushes in two seasons.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Tate absent from Giants practice after comments during MNF
New York Giants receiver Golden Tate may be in some hot water due to his actions on Monday Night Football.Head coach Joe Judge revealed Tate will not be at Wednesday's walk-through but will return to the team Thursday, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. Judge didn't say whether Tate's absence is discipline for the events that transpired Monday, only saying the team will deal with it internally.Tate was caught yelling, "Throw me the ball" after catching a touchdown pass against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Harbaugh: Ravens' COVID-19 absences are 'opportunity to create versatility'
The Baltimore Ravens will practice this week with eight players missing on defense due to cornerback Marlon Humphrey’s positive COVID-19 test.Head coach John Harbaugh doesn’t view the lack of available bodies as a negative as his team prepares for Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.“You look at it as an opportunity to create versatility within your defense," said Harbaugh, per ESPN’s Jamison Hensley.Seven of the Baltimore players on the reserve/COVID-19 list could return as soon as Saturday: linebackers Matthew Judon, Patrick Queen, Tyus Bowser, Malik Harrison, and LJ Fort, and defensive backs DeShon Elliott and Terrell Bonds.Humphrey is ruled out for Sunday’s contest. The Ravens haven't recorded any additional positive cases since their All-Pro cornerback announced his test result.Harbaugh didn't want to speculate when asked how missing practice will impact his team."Well, I think we'll find that out. It's impossible to predict that," he said. "I don't spend a lot of time being anxious about that because it's really a waste of time."According to Harbaugh, there’s been no discussion of postponing the game if more positive cases arise.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Buccaneers' Gholston self-isolating after COVID-19 exposure
Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman William Gholston announced Wednesday he was exposed to an individual outside the team who tested positive for COVID-19.Gholston is currently self-isolating as a precaution. The Michigan State product also revealed he tested positive for the virus earlier in the offseason and experienced "relatively minimal symptoms."The 29-year-old added he is still being tested daily and expects to rejoin the team in time for its Sunday matchup against the New Orleans Saints.Gholston is currently in his eighth season with the Buccaneers. The 2013 fourth-round selection has tallied 21 tackles, two sacks, and four tackles for loss this season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Antonio Brown addresses critics: I hope 'I can win them over in my actions'
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hope Antonio Brown can help them win a lot of football games, and the receiver hopes he can win over critics of his character in the process."Hopefully, I can change their perspective ... hopefully, I can win them over in my actions," Brown said Wednesday when asked for a response to those questioning whether he should be allowed to return to the pros, according to The Athletic's Greg Auman.Speaking at his first press conference since signing with the Buccaneers, the receiver stressed his gratitude for another opportunity to suit up in the NFL."I've been working on myself for a year and a half ... trying to be a better person," he said, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.Brown hasn't played in the NFL since suiting up for one game with the New England Patriots last season. The receiver's time in New England was cut short due to off-field issues, and the league later suspended him eight games in the offseason for violating its personal conduct policy. The 32-year-old caught passes from Tom Brady during his one game with the Patriots, and he'll team up with the quarterback again in Tampa Bay. Brady has taken Brown under his wing, letting him stay at his house and even connecting him with self-help author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins."Tom is my boy," Brown said. "I've learned a lot from him. He's been a great guy in my corner and one of my best friends.''He added: "(Tony Robbins) has been a great asset ... changing my outlook on a couple things, getting away from anger, being able to see the positive things."Brown - who spent the majority of his career thus far with the Pittsburgh Steelers - was one of the NFL's most dominant receivers over the past decade. He recorded over 100 receptions and 1,200 receiving yards in six straight seasons from 2013-18.The Buccaneers will have Brown on the field for the first time Sunday when they take on the New Orleans Saints. He's expected to add even more firepower to an offense that already includes Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Rob Gronkowski."I’m just super grateful to be here in such a great organization to be around some great players," Brown said.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bears release Ted Ginn Jr.
The Chicago Bears released veteran wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., the team announced Wednesday.Ginn - who signed a one-year deal with the Bears as a free agent in April - failed to make an impact this season and was a healthy scratch for a second straight game in Week 8 after struggles returning punts. The Bears benched Ginn, who took over as punt returner following Tarik Cohen's injury, for Dwayne Harris. The 35-year-old caught just three passes for 60 yards while on the field for just 62 offensive snaps all season.Ginn began his career with the Miami Dolphins after being drafted with the No. 9 pick in 2007. He's also spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and New Orleans Saints.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Buccaneers' Arians: Alvin Kamara 'scarier' than Marshall Faulk
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians may be scared of Alvin Kamara's talent on the field, but he certainly isn't afraid to admit it.Arians even ranked Kamara ahead of a Hall of Fame running back as the Buccanneers prepare to clash with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday."I coached Marshall Faulk, and this guy's scarier," Arians said Tuesday, according to Fox Sports' Sara Walsh.Arians was the Indianapolis Colts' quarterbacks coach during the 1998 campaign and saw firsthand what Faulk could do. The talented running back put up a league-leading 2,227 yards from scrimmage for Indianapolis that season. The Buccaneers held Kamara to just 67 yards from scrimmage in the Saints' Week 1 win over Tampa Bay, but Arians knows his defense faces a tall task trying to contain the running back a second time."He's got great speed, he's got great hands, he's got wide-receiver skills but he's a hell of a running back. He's a tough tackle. I thought in the first ballgame we did a good job, but he's expanded his role," Arians told reporters."Drew (Brees) is really doing a nice job of finding him in the passing game and (Saints head coach) Sean (Payton) is putting him in position to be successful. We've got our hands full. Hopefully, we can do as good of a job this time."Kamara has put up big numbers this season, leading the NFL with 987 yards from scrimmage. The 25-year-old has also had little trouble finding the end zone, scoring seven touchdowns thus far.The Buccaneers will look to contain Kamara with the NFL's stingiest run defense. Tampa Bay has allowed just 70.4 rushing yards per game in 2020.Tampa Bay and New Orleans are currently locked in a tight race for the NFC South crown, with the 5-2 Saints narrowly trailing the 6-2 Buccaneers.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Power Rankings - Week 9: Players who must step up in 2nd half
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. This week, we look ahead to the second half of the season and name one player from each team who needs to step up.1. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-0) Frederick Breedon / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 2It's hard to nitpick an undefeated team, but Terrell Edmunds is the only starter in the Steelers' secondary without an interception this season.2. Kansas City Chiefs (7-1)Previous Rank: 1Frank Clark came on strong in the second half last year, and he'll need to repeat that after managing just three sacks and 20 quarterback pressures through the first eight games in 2020.3. Seattle Seahawks (6-1)Previous Rank: 3Though they're 6-1 and the class of the NFC, there's plenty of room for the Seahawks to improve, starting with their 31st-ranked defense. Top corner Shaquill Griffin has allowed five touchdowns and a 115.4 passer rating against.4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-2)Previous Rank: 4The Buccaneers' defense is playing well to start the campaign, but although pass-rusher Shaq Barrett has been disrupting quarterbacks, he's logged just three sacks and is well off the pace from his 19.5-sack season in 2019.5. Baltimore Ravens (5-2) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 5With All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley lost for the season, Orlando Brown Jr. figures to move across the offensive line, and he'll need to play the best football of his young career.6. Green Bay Packers (5-2)Previous Rank: 6Za'Darius Smith has registered six sacks in seven games, but he's getting little help from his teammates. Tag-team partner Preston Smith notched 12 sacks last year, but he's tallied just half a sack this season.7. Arizona Cardinals (5-2)Previous Rank: 8Aside from a 164-yard outburst in Week 6, Kenyan Drake has recorded just one other game with 80-plus rushing yards. Drake will need to give the Cardinals' offense some balance when he returns from his ankle injury.8. Buffalo Bills (6-2)Previous Rank: 11Ed Oliver hasn't taken the sophomore leap the Bills envisioned, and the team's defensive line issues threaten to linger if the 2019 No. 9 pick doesn't pick up his game.9. New Orleans Saints (5-2)Previous Rank: 10The Saints have won four straight, though no victory has come easy. New Orleans needs Michael Thomas to make a seamless return from his injury and disciplinary issues so its offense can kick into a higher gear.10. Tennessee Titans (5-2) Frederick Breedon / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 7The Titans were expecting more than zero sacks from Jadeveon Clowney when they handed him $13 million before the season, yet that's what they've received thus far.11. Indianapolis Colts (5-2)Previous Rank: 13The key for the Colts down the stretch will be offensive consistency, so it would help if T.Y. Hilton recaptured his top form. He's averaging under 36 yards per game, and there aren't many quality options beyond him on the Colts' depth chart.12. Las Vegas Raiders (4-3)Previous Rank: 16There's no way Nick Kwiatkoski should be outplaying Cory Littleton, a marquee free-agent signing. But the former has taken over as the Raiders' top linebacker.13. Los Angeles Rams (5-3)Previous Rank: 9Jared Goff is coming off a four-turnover performance, and he'll need to make better decisions when faced with pressure, particularly with games against the Seahawks, Buccaneers, 49ers, and Cardinals upcoming.14. San Francisco 49ers (4-4)Previous Rank: 12Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle are out long term, shifting the 49ers' offensive focus to their running game going forward. Injuries have also crippled San Francisco's backfield, and although he's played in all eight games, Jerick McKinnon has failed to make an impact.15. Miami Dolphins (4-3) Michael Reaves / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 17Byron Jones has been in and out of the lineup, and his consistent presence would be a major boost to a Dolphins secondary already benefitting from Xavien Howard playing at a Pro Bowl clip.16. Cleveland Browns (5-3)Previous Rank: 14The Browns didn't draft Baker Mayfield first overall to be a game-manager. He needs to step up against better teams for Cleveland to be taken seriously in the playoff race.17. Chicago Bears (5-3)Previous Rank: 15The Bears are married to Nick Foles, for better or worse. For Chicago to remain in playoff contention, the veteran quarterback needs to improve his near 1:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and a passer rating worse than what Mitchell Trubisky produced.18. Denver Broncos (3-4)Previous Rank: 23They've got a long road ahead of them, but if Drew Lock can get hot, the Broncos could make a run at the AFC's final wild-card spot. Lock has thrown four touchdown passes and five interceptions in five appearances, though he led a game-winning drive against the Chargers in Week 8.19. Philadelphia Eagles (3-4-1)Previous Rank: 21Carson Wentz may lack playmakers around him, but he needs to take care of the ball better. His penchant for extending plays has led to a league-high 12 interceptions and four fumbles lost.20. Carolina Panthers (3-5) Grant Halverson / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 18Derrick Brown, the Panthers' first-round pick and the seventh overall pick last spring, has recorded just 18 tackles while missing three.21. New England Patriots (2-5)Previous Rank: 22Tom Brady isn't walking through that door. Unless Cam Newton can transform into Superman, the skill-deficient Patriots don't stand a chance.22. Minnesota Vikings (2-5)Previous Rank: 27Kirk Cousins sure isn't playing like the seventh highest-paid quarterback based on annual average. The Vikings passer has thrown 10 picks, and he's made few contributions during the team's two victories.23. Detroit Lions (3-4)Previous Rank: 20Marvin Jones Jr. needs to become the Lions' No. 1 receiver with Kenny Golladay set to miss time again due to an injury. Jones struggled with that responsibility earlier in the year, and he's logged just 265 yards and three scores this season.24. Washington Football Team (2-5)Previous Rank: 24Life after Trent Williams is rough. Geron Christian Sr., Washington's replacement at left tackle, has allowed six sacks and 24 quarterback pressures.25. Cincinnati Bengals (2-5-1) Todd Olszewski / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 28Joe Mixon is off to a sluggish start for the second straight year, and the Bengals' poor ground game has resulted in Joe Burrow trying to win contests by himself. As Cincinnati's record shows, that's too much to ask of a rookie quarterback.26. Houston Texans (1-6)Previous Rank: 26Houston can't begin a second-half surge without a defensive resurrection, which means J.J. Watt needs to reach into the fountain of youth and come up with more than the three sacks he's tallied during the first half.27. Los Angeles Chargers (2-5)Previous Rank: 19The Chargers haven't struggled during the first three quarters of games, so we're calling out head coach Anthony Lynn for the repeated fourth-quarter meltdowns. Coach, whatever you're doing in the final frame, change it.28. Atlanta Falcons (2-6)Previous Rank: 29The Falcons' pass defense has been barbecue chicken, allowing the second-most yards and a league-high 20 touchdowns. Rookie A.J. Terrell has given up 25 receptions on 32 targets.29. Dallas Cowboys (2-6)Previous Rank: 25With the uncertainty at quarterback in Dallas, it's imperative that Ezekiel Elliott returns to form. He's averaging a career-low 3.9 yards per rush, and his three lost fumbles have played a role in the Cowboys' ugly record.30. New York Giants (1-7) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 31Daniel Jones has accounted for 10 turnovers, and he's missed several open receivers running free past the secondary. There's still a chance for the Giants to make the playoffs out of the weak NFC East, but their sophomore quarterback needs to improve his accuracy.31. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-6)Previous Rank: 30In a rebuilding season, the Jaguars wanted to see more from DJ Chark, who finished with 1,008 receiving yards last year. But the club is still waiting for him to surpass the 300-yard mark at the midway point of its schedule.32. New York Jets (0-8)Previous Rank: 32Denzel Mims compiled a pair of 42-yard games to begin his career, and the Jets will need the second-round wideout to flash more if they want to resuscitate Adam Gase's offense.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Titans to cut Beasley after 5 games
The Tennessee Titans informed edge rusher Vic Beasley they will be releasing him Wednesday, ending his uneventful stay with the club after five appearances, the team announced.Beasley signed a one-year, $9.5-million deal with the Titans in the offseason following a five-year stint with the Atlanta Falcons, with whom he made the Pro Bowl in 2016.Beasley's tenure in Tennessee got off to a rocky start, as he arrived to training camp several days late without being given an excused absence. The team fined him $500,000 for his tardiness.Once the season began, Beasley struggled to carve out a role in the Titans' defense, which ranks near the bottom of the league in sacks. In five outings, he recorded just three tackles and a forced fumble. The Titans, who have lost two straight and their defense has been struggling for much of the season, also released veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph on Tuesday. Tennessee acquired fellow cornerback Desmond King on Monday in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jets GM: Darnold is 'our quarterback for the future'
New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas remains confident in quarterback Sam Darnold. The Jets are winless and Darnold is struggling, but Douglas believes his team hasn't done enough to upgrade the signal-caller's supporting cast."He's our best quarterback and our quarterback for the future," Douglas said Tuesday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN."... My feeling on Sam hasn't changed. We have to do a better job of surrounding him with talent," he added, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.Douglas said one of his mistakes was letting wide receiver Robby Anderson go as a free agent this past offseason.Anderson, who led the Jets in receiving during two of the past three seasons, is on pace to set career highs with the Carolina Panthers. He's recorded 51 catches and 688 yards through eight games this season."That's on me," Douglas said, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. "Honestly, we would all love to see Robby here doing what he's doing."Darnold has regressed during his third season, completing 58.6% of his pass attempts for 1,045 yards and three touchdowns against six interceptions over six games. Here are his completion percentages and per-game averages since being drafted third overall:YearGamesComp %YardsTDINT20181357.7220.41.31.220191361.9232.61.512020658.6174.20.51Meanwhile, the Jets are 0-8 while ranking 32nd in scoring offensively and 28th defensively."We're all frustrated with where we are right now," Douglas said. Patriots add WR depth, acquire Ford from Dolphins
In a rare trade between division rivals, the New England Patriots acquired wide receiver Isaiah Ford from the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins received a 2022 seventh-round pick for the wideout, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.Ford joins a depleted Patriots receiving corps that includes N'Keal Harry, Jakobi Meyers, and Damiere Byrd. Julian Edelman is on injured reserve with a knee injury. After playing college football at Virginia Tech, Ford was Miami's seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He played in just nine games over his first three seasons but earned a larger role under Brian Flores this year. The 24-year-old has caught 18 passes for 184 yards through seven games in 2020, which would rank third on New England behind Edelman and Byrd.Ford offers good size and agility at 6-foot-2, 201 pounds. Dolphins acquire Washington with Gaskin nursing MCL injury
The Miami Dolphins acquired running back DeAndre Washington and a seventh-round draft pick from the Kansas City Chiefs for a sixth-round selection. Both draft choices involved in the deal are conditional.Miami was motivated to make the move after learning Myles Gaskin will miss around three weeks with an MCL sprain, reports Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.Washington appeared in one game for the Chiefs, rushing three times for five yards and catching one pass for two yards. Judon, Queen among 7 Ravens players isolating after Humphrey's positive test
The Baltimore Ravens announced Tuesday they've placed seven players who had recent close contact with cornerback Marlon Humphrey on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The players are pass-rushers Matthew Judon and Tyus Bowser; linebackers Patrick Queen, Malik Harrison, and L.J. Fort; safety DeShon Elliott; and cornerback Terrell Bonds. They will be isolated for five days and need to pass daily COVID-19 tests during the week to play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.Humphrey received his positive test result Monday, just hours after facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon. Report: Packers brass disagreed on short-term trade for receiver
The Green Bay Packers disagreed at the highest levels of their organization about whether they should make a short-term deal for a wide receiver at the trade deadline, according to ESPN's Dianna Russini. The Packers were linked to Will Fuller of the Houston Texans leading up to the Tuesday afternoon buzzer, but the two sides couldn't agree on draft-pick compensation or the amount of money Houston would take on, reports The MMQB's Albert Breer. The Texans were rumored to be holding out for significant compensation in a Fuller deal, even though he's set to become a free agent at the end of the season.Green Bay's passing attack has become increasingly reliant on Davante Adams since Allen Lazard was sidelined indefinitely with a core muscle injury. In four games as the No. 2 wideout to Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling has averaged 24 yards per contest and hasn't caught a touchdown."I wouldn't say it's a need, but obviously - I've said this before - I don't think that it's any secret that that could help us, potentially," Adams told Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette about two hours before the deadline. "So I wouldn't be opposed to it. It could help us, but I definitely got full faith and trust in my guys here to be able to get it done."The Packers were heavily scrutinized over the offseason after failing to upgrade Aaron Rodgers' receiving core. Rodgers, 36, acknowledged after the NFL draft that he wanted the club to use a top draft pick on a skill player. Instead, Green Bay selected quarterback Jordan Love in the first round. The Packers didn't make a move at Tuesday's deadline. They've dropped two of their last three games but still sit atop the NFC North at 5-2, half a game in front of the Chicago Bears.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Dalton lands on COVID-19 list; Gilbert or Rush reportedly to start vs. Steelers
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton will be placed on the COVID-19 reserve and miss Week 9 versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced. The Cowboys added that Dalton will likely be out for 14 days.Dallas will turn to either Garrett Gilbert or Cooper Rush in Week 9 after third-stringer Ben DiNucci's poor performance against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.Dalton sat out Week 8 with a concussion, leaving DiNucci to make his first career start in a loss to the Eagles. The Cowboys are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, with all three losses coming on starts from Dalton or DiNucci. Report: Patriots wanted 1st-round pick, player in exchange for Gilmore
Multiple teams contacted the New England Patriots regarding star cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and the price for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year was a first-round draft pick and a player, ESPN's Dianna Russini reports.Gilmore remains one of the league's premier defensive players despite seeing his play drop off somewhat this season. He's broken up two passes and intercepted one across six games after leading the NFL with six picks in 2019.With the Patriots in danger of falling out of the AFC playoff race, Gilmore's name surfaced in trade rumors last week. The 30-year-old is signed through 2021 but could seek a similar raise to the $5-million boost he received ahead of the 2020 campaign.Last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder.Gilmore missed his first game since 2017 last Sunday against the Buffalo Bills with a knee injury.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers' Coleman, Samuel out vs. Packers on TNF
The list of San Francisco 49ers unavailable for Thursday's game against the Green Bay Packers continues to grow.Running back Tevin Coleman and receiver Deebo Samuel will not play in Week 9, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday, according to team reporter Keiana Martin.Coleman is out with a knee injury and Samuel is nursing a hamstring injury.Coleman has seen sparse game time. He played in the first two weeks of the season and then was out with an injury until he returned versus the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8. He has just 50 rushing yards on 21 carries this season.Fellow running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. are on injured reserve, so the Niners will have to rely on JaMycal Hasty and Jerick McKinnon out of the backfield.Samuel missed the first three games of the season, returned for Weeks 4-7, and then was out versus the Seahawks.Shanahan also announced starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and tight end George Kittle will be placed on injured reserve. Jerry Jones: SNF start more than DiNucci could handle
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn't think quarterback Ben DiNucci's first career NFL start came under the right circumstances against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8."I think that it was a lot for him," Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan, according to ESPN's Ed Werder. "I think we certainly, as a team, paid the price to have him come in and under those circumstances. And that's almost trite. It was frankly more than he could handle."DiNucci completed 21 of 40 pass attempts for 180 yards during the 23-9 loss to the Eagles on Sunday Night Football. He also suffered two fumbles in the game. The seventh-round rookie out of James Madison took over the Cowboys' starting role after Andy Dalton - who's replacing starter Dak Prescott - suffered a concussion the prior game. The 2-6 Cowboys are one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season. Prescott's offensive production compensated for Dallas' defensive struggles, but the team's issues have been exposed since he was sidelined. The Cowboys are 0-3 without Prescott and failed to score more than 10 points in each game.Dallas has yet to announce the starting signal-caller for its Week 9 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after Dalton was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list Tuesday. The Cowboys' depth chart at quarterback also features veteran Garrett Gilbert - their backup signal-caller against the Eagles - and Cooper Rush, who was recently signed to the team's practice squad.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. But it bears mentioning: if you haven't used the Chiefs yet, they would be my top choice this week.Instead, I'm presented with a tough decision in Week 9. The way I look at it, there are three options, each with its own appeal. Do I trust an unbeaten team coming off an emotionally draining win? If not, it's between a pair of teams I don't particularly trust, facing a pair of squads I'm quite content fading.Let's make the case for all three. The case for Pittsburgh...There isn't a team in the NFL right now playing better football than the Steelers, and the Cowboys have blossomed into the NFC's version of the Jets. Pittsburgh is playing lights out on defense, ranking second in DVOA, and while the offense is in the middle of the pack for efficiency, it's in the top five in terms of scoring thanks to its big-play ability.Everything seems to be going right for the 7-0 Steelers. The opposite is true of the Cowboys. Dallas has been outscored 86-22 in three games without Dak Prescott while averaging just 3.5 yards per play. They have just one touchdown in that span, coming late in garbage time against the Cardinals. The Cowboys are hopeful they'll get Andy Dalton back for this game, but it won't matter. Whoever is under center hasn't been afforded the time to find success. Their porous offensive line has allowed the fifth-most sacks, and they could make a real run at the top spot after this week against a Steelers defense that leads the league in that regard.Pittsburgh's only concern is an emotional hangover in what has to be dubbed a letdown spot following a huge win in Baltimore last week. If the Steelers can maintain their focus, it's tough to find a path to victory here for the Cowboys. The case for Houston...The Texans wouldn't be on my radar if Bill O'Brien was still in charge, but the absence of BOB inspires a bit more belief in Deshaun Watson and Co. The Texans steamrolled the Jaguars 30-14 at NRG Stadium in their first game after firing O'Brien, averaging an incredible 8.4 yards per play. Watson threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns in that contest and there's every reason to expect him to find the same success as the Jaguars secondary ranks dead-last against the pass, allowing 8.4 yards per attempt. The Jaguars defense has been victimized with remarkable consistency this season, ranking 31st in both yards and points allowed per play. Houston will have its way on offense, putting pressure on the Jaguars and rookie quarterback Jake Luton to keep pace in his first NFL start. We can expect a healthy dose of James Robinson against a Texans defense that's surrendering a miserable 5.2 yards per rush (31st), but Luton will have to make plays through the air eventually.Jacksonville struggled on offense with Gardner Minshew at quarterback, with its passing and overall offense ranking in the bottom third in yards per play. It's tough to envision a scenario where this group improves with Luton under center. Meanwhile, Houston boasts a top-five overall offense in both of those categories and has posted terrific numbers against weak defenses like the Jaguars. In a matchup between Watson and Luton, you'd be crazy to pick the latter. The case for New England...As I watched the Chiefs beat up on the Jets Sunday, my biggest takeaway was that Sam Darnold is absolutely still feeling the effects of his shoulder injury. He spent all afternoon throwing checkdowns and wide receiver screens, despite playing the entire game from behind. He averaged a feeble 4.4 yards per attempt, with just one pass going for more than 20 yards. On Monday, it was confirmed Darnold is indeed still battling his injury. As bad as Joe Flacco has been for this miserable Jets offense, you can't convince me an injured Darnold, who can't push the ball downfield, is an improvement. The Patriots have their own offensive issues, but it appeared as though they figured some things out. I have a lot more faith in Cam Newton and New England's stable of running backs to find success moving the ball than I do a Jets offense ranking last in the NFL by a landslide with just 4.2 yards per play. The opportunistic Patriots defense will force a few turnovers and present the offense with some short fields to help get back into the win column.On-field product aside, backing Bill Belichick to beat Adam Gase is about as safe a bet as one could make. Belichick's defense has given Darnold fits in the past. Darnold saw ghosts when these teams met at MetLife Stadium last season on Monday Night Football. He finished that game with just 11 completions for 86 yards on 32 attempts and turned the ball over five times (four interceptions, one fumble) in a 33-0 loss. We've been fading the Jets all season, and I don't see the point in stopping now.Author's pick: PatriotsAlex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. Denver Broncos edge rusher Von Miller is eyeing a return in three-to-four weeks despite suffering what was believed to be a season-ending injury in training camp."My ankle is feeling good," Miller said on Instagram Live, according to Troy Renck of Denver7. "I am straight. Hopefully in a couple of weeks, three weeks to a month, I should be ready to go."Miller had surgery in September for a dislodged tendon in his left ankle. The eight-time Pro Bowler sustained the injury days before the season opener but kept the door open for a return late in the year. The Broncos started the campaign 0-3 amid a rash of injuries, but wins in three of their last four games has them on the cusp of wild-card contention.Miller posted eight sacks last season, which marked the first time in his career that he failed to hit double digits while playing in at least 10 games. The 31-year-old previously said he would play in 2020 if healthy enough, regardless of the Broncos' record.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: NFL competition committee to submit 16-team playoff contingency plan
The NFL's competition committee is expected to submit a proposal for a 16-team playoff field in the event games are lost during the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports, citing league sources.A resolution is expected to be presented to team owners in the near future.A 16-team field would consist of the four division winners and four wild-card teams from each conference, Mortensen adds.Such a contingency may be necessary if COVID-19 wreaks havoc on the NFL schedule. The league will enter Week 9 on Thursday and many teams have already passed their bye week. Aside from adding a Week 18, the league may have to expand the playoff field if some of its clubs can't fulfill a 16-game schedule.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Belichick honest about Patriots' depth: 'We sold out and won 3 Super Bowls'
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was transparent when pressed with concerning questions surrounding the team's talent level. The Patriots currently sit at 2-5 and have been forced to use young, inexperienced players this season - a price to pay for an extended streak of postseason success."I mean, look, we paid Cam Newton a million dollars. It’s obvious that we didn’t have any money. It’s nobody’s fault. That’s what we did the last five years. We sold out and won three Super Bowls, played in a fourth and played in an AFC Championship Game. This year we had less to work with. It's not an excuse. It's just a fact," the head coach said Monday on WEEI 93.7.Belichick's answer was a follow-up to an interview that took place over the previous weekend, in which he pointed to the Patriots' salary cap limitations as a major factor for the team's lack of depth."This is kind of the year that we've taken to, I would say, adjust our cap from the spending that we’ve had in accumulation of prior years. We just haven’t been able to have the kind of depth on our roster that we've had in some other years," Belichick said, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. The Patriots currently have $26.4 million in dead cap for this season. Tom Brady accounts for $13.5 million of their dead money while Antonio Brown is on the books for another $4.5 million, per Spotrac.New England's roster was also dealt a significant blow over the offseason due to player opt-outs. The team had a league-leading eight players choose to bypass the 2020 season. The Patriots have finished with at least 10 wins in every season dating back to 2003 but that streak could be in serious jeopardy this year. New England has lost four games in a row and have struggled on offense, averaging just 19.4 points per game.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Lions' Golladay set to miss Week 9 due to hip injury
Wide receiver Kenny Golladay is expected to miss the Detroit Lions' Week 9 contest against the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a hip injury Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Golladay is considered week-to-week and could be a candidate to land on injured reserve depending on the severity of the injury, Rapoport adds. The Lions reportedly haven't made a full determination regarding Golladay's timeline.Any player placed on injured reserve this season is required to miss a minimum of three games. The Lions moved defensive end Trey Flowers to reserve Monday with an undisclosed injury, per Rapoport.Golladay's hip issue isn't the first ailment he's dealt with this season; a hamstring injury forced him to miss the first two games of the campaign. The 26-year-old has recorded 20 receptions for 338 yards and two touchdowns this season as he looks to build on a 2019 campaign that saw him lead the NFL with 11 receiving touchdowns. The Lions may be looking to add some insurance to their receiving group following Golladay's injury as free-agent receiver Mohamed Sanu is trying out for the team.Golladay, selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, is in the last year of his rookie contract.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Titans acquire King from Chargers for 6th-rounder
The Los Angeles Chargers traded defensive back Desmond King to the Tennessee Titans, the team officially announced Monday. The Chargers will receive a 2021 sixth-round pick in exchange for King.King earned first-and second-team All-Pro honors in 2018 as a defensive back and punt returner, respectively.Los Angeles held the 25-year-old out of Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos due to what head coach Anthony Lynn called a "team decision."Selected by the Chargers in the fifth round in 2017, King is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. The Titans needed to upgrade their secondary as they enter the second half of the season in a two-horse race with the Indianapolis Colts for the AFC South crown.Tennessee has allowed 268.7 passing yards per game through eight weeks, the sixth-worst mark in the league.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Kittle, Garoppolo out at least 6 weeks with foot, ankle injuries
The San Francisco 49ers can't seem to shake the injury bug.George Kittle will miss eight weeks after suffering a small fracture in his foot, while Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks with a high ankle sprain, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Garoppolo was removed late in Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks with the injury. San Francisco believes he requires time to rest an ailment that's bothered him since Week 2, Schefter adds.Garoppolo missed two games after initially hurting his ankle against the New York Jets. He briefly returned in Week 5 but exited again due to the injury.Kittle's absence will also be a significant blow to Kyle Shanahan's offense. The tight end sat out two contests earlier this season after injuring his knee in Week 1.Initial X-rays didn't reveal a fracture for the two-time All-Pro selection, but he now could be forced to miss the remainder of the 2020 campaign.Nick Mullens replaced Garoppolo against Seattle and could start Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers. Ross Dwelley and rookie Charlie Woerner are Kittle's backups at tight end, though veteran Jordan Reed could return from injured reserve within the next two weeks.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 5 betting takeaways from NFL Week 8
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. We saw another week full of NFL records, though most were of the lowlight variety. Here are five betting takeaways from Week 8.Steelers stake claim as NFL's bestFor the second straight week, we lead with the undefeated Steelers, who erased a 10-point halftime deficit in Sunday's 28-24 win over the Ravens (-4). The victory brings them to 7-0 for just the second time in franchise history; Pittsburgh started 7-0 en route to a Super Bowl in 1979.Four of the last seven teams to start 7-0 made the Super Bowl, though only one of them actually won it all (the 2015 Broncos). These Steelers could be the second. Their defense forced reigning MVP Lamar Jackson into a career-high four turnovers and a career-low 12.6 QBR, and their offense showed enough to justify their short +600 title price. As good as Sunday was for Pittsburgh, it was equally as bad for the Ravens (+900 to win the Super Bowl), who are now two games back in the AFC North. They lost All-Pro tackle Ronnie Stanley to a season-ending knee injury just days after signing him to an extension, which is a major blow to a team that relies heavily on its offensive line. Then on Monday, All-Pro corner Marlon Humphrey announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19. You might want to take a wait-and-see approach before trying to buy low on Baltimore.Rookie QBs lead major upsetsThe top two picks in April's draft were both in action Sunday, and each helped key two of the week's bigger upsets. Before the year, we suspected there would be weekly betting value on Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Sure enough, they're 6-1-1 against the spread after a convincing win over the Titans (-7), whom we felt could be walking into a trap game. Burrow had one of his best games as a pro, picking apart Tennessee's defense for 249 yards, two touchdowns, and zero turnovers. If you aren't already all aboard the Burrow betting train, your ticket is waiting in will call.Tua Tagovailoa (93 yards, 1 TD) didn't look as sharp Sunday, but he did just enough to help the Dolphins (+3.5) score our favorite upset pick of the week against the inconsistent Rams. He had some rookie moments in his NFL debut, though Miami's exotic defense showed its game-wrecking potential, and its elite special teams unit turned the tide once again. Only three teams have better ATS records than the Dolphins (5-2), who are quickly becoming one of my favorite teams to bet each week.Eagles blast Cowboys to stretch division leadFor as bad as all four NFC East teams have been this year, we knew the winner of Sunday's game would be in the driver's seat to win the division. That honor went to the Eagles (-10), who are now 1.5 games ahead of Washington and priced at -230 to win the NFL's most dubious divisional race.Despite the final score, Philadelphia wasn't particularly impressive in its 23-9 win. Carson Wentz finished with 123 yards, two touchdowns, and two bone-headed interceptions that continue to raise questions about his legitimacy as a starting quarterback. The defense did just enough to fluster seventh-round rookie Ben DiNucci, whose late fumble resulted in the Eagles' game-sealing score and a brutal loss for Cowboys +10 bettors. This contest likely says less about Philly and more about Dallas, which drops to 0-8 ATS and third place in the NFC East. The Cowboys are only the third team to start 0-8 ATS in the last 30 years (1991 Bengals, 2003 Raiders). Neither club went above .500 ATS over its final eight games, and Dallas won't either if its offense doesn't improve from Sunday's showing.Chargers collapse again in historic fashionIf you thought the Falcons and Lions were alone on the pedestal of the NFL's biggest chokers, you might want to make room for the Chargers. At one point in Sunday's 31-30 loss to the Broncos, Los Angeles (-3) led 24-3 and had 24 first downs to Denver's two. Still, the Chargers managed to cough up that 21-point lead and lose on a game-winning touchdown as time expired. It was the third straight 17-point lead or worse that Los Angeles has blown this season, which is to say nothing of the 16-point advantage the Chargers threw away last week before closing out the Jaguars.L.A. had a 17-point lead or better against the Buccaneers (-7), Saints (-7), and Broncos (+3), and had at least a 94.6% chance of winning each of those contests, per ESPN. It had a mere 0.0016% chance of blowing all three. The Chargers might be a sneaky value given how well they've played against the NFL's best, but if they can't resolve their late-game woes, it won't matter.Favorites losing at historic paceRemember two weeks ago when we highlighted how bad favorites were? They were even worse this week, bringing down this season's mark to a record low.Favorites went 4-9 ATS this week, the worst regular-season mark since Week 6 of 2017, which was one of the worst of all time. Their straight-up record this week (6-7) was also the worst since 2017 and the first time favorites had a losing record outright in the last 15 weeks. On the season, favorites are now on pace for the worst ATS winning percentage (47.4%) and the lowest average scoring margin (+4.54) since 2006. Part of it might be the dwindling value of home-field advantage. This season, home favorites have the second-worst ATS mark (44.4%) since 1997, while home teams in general are sporting the worst record (45.6%) since at least 1989, the first year of available data. This could be a sample size issue - four of the last five seasons have seen a worse record for favorites through Week 8. Still, there are more sizable upsets this year than usual, and it's a trend that has only gotten stronger as the season has developed.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Minshew out Week 9, Jaguars to start rookie Luton at QB
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew will miss Sunday's game against the Houston Texans with a thumb injury, head coach Doug Marrone announced Monday, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco.Marrone said rookie sixth-round pick Jake Luton will make his first career start in place of Minshew.Minshew is reportedly dealing with multiple fractures and a strained ligament in his right thumb. He felt discomfort since Oct. 11, but the Jaguars weren't aware of the injury until this week.Marrone said he won't discipline Minshew for hiding the injury.Luton is a tall, strong-armed quarterback who began his college career at Idaho. After transferring to a California community college in 2016, he spent the next three years at Oregon State, serving as the Beavers' primary starter in his final two campaigns.Marrone didn't give a timeline for Minshew's recovery and said there's no guarantee he'll be the starter when he returns, according to DiRocco.Veteran Mike Glennon will operate as Luton's backup versus Houston.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL bad line of the week: All signs point to Texans blowout
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. We took it on the chin in last week's bad line selection. The Los Angeles Rams, laying 3.5 over the Miami Dolphins, lost by double digits, ending our streak of four straight correct picks. But there's no time like the present to get back on track. Here's the board for Week 9, as well as the one line that looks a little fishy.MatchupSpreadGB @ SFPackers -2DET @ MINVikings -4DEN @ ATLFalcons -4HOU @ JAXTexans -6.5CAR @ KCChiefs -12SEA @ BUFSeahawks -2.5CHI @ TENTitans -6BAL @ INDRavens -3NYG @ WFTWFT -3LV @ LACChargers -1.5MIA @ ARICardinals -4.5PIT @ DALOFFNE @ NYJPatriots -7NO @ TBBuccaneers -4Bad line of the week: Texans (-6.5 @ Jaguars)The Houston Texans' lone victory of the season came in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Houston should double its win total comfortably on Sunday when the two AFC South clubs meet again.Houston has been one of the toughest teams to gauge in 2020. Most 1-6 clubs don't get a pass, but the Texans may have a case: they've played the second-toughest schedule in the NFL entering Week 9, including games against three of the top four DVOA offenses and two of the top three DVOA defenses. It's actually impressive that the Texans are +0.1 in net yards per play despite that tough path. That's a sign that Houston is probably due for a bounce-back game, and it's likely to come against a punching bag like the Jaguars. We saw a similar situation earlier in the year; after going 0-4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Minnesota Vikings to open, the Texans steamrolled Jacksonville in their first real tune-up.The Texans dropped a crucial divisional game against the Tennessee Titans in Week 6 and were run out of their own building by the Green Bay Packers a week later. Coming off a bye, the Texans should feast against a Jaguars squad getting out-gained by nearly a full yard per play despite playing the seventh-easiest schedule in the NFL.This is also a smash spot both for Houston and against Jacksonville. We can play the road favorites coming off a bye (81-43-2 against the spread since 1999) and fade the home underdogs off a bye (11-25-1 ATS since 1999).Finally, the Texans are 3-0 both straight-up and ATS all time versus the Jags when coming off a bye and 0-5 against all other opponents in the same situation.Jacksonville should be focused more on inching closer to the No. 1 overall pick than competing against a far superior team. Fade a Jags squad that hasn't covered a spread since Week 2.Pick: Texans -6.5(Odds source: theScore Bet)Alex Kolodziej is a betting writer for theScore.
