Chargers GM: 'We've got a strong group of guys' without Melvin Gordon
Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco praised Melvin Gordon's talents on the team's opening day of training camp but said the team is willing to continue without the running back if necessary."I'm not naive: I know we're better with Melvin Gordon," Telesco said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Eric Williams. "But we've got a strong group of guys that are here, and it's their time to work and get ready to go."Gordon, 26, is reportedly holding out from Chargers training camp in hopes of securing a long-term extension. It was reported Monday, however, that the team is "dug in" on its current offer.Running backs Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson are expected to see increased roles in Gordon's absence. Ekler averaged 5.2 yards per carry last season, amassing 958 yards from scrimmage with six touchdowns. The Chargers also went 4-0 in the games Gordon missed last year.Gordon can reportedly be fined up to $40,000 per missed day of camp.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Julio sets lofty goal for 2019: 'I might mess around and go' 3K yards
Julio Jones has achieved a lot during his career, and the Atlanta Falcons receiver isn't lowering the bar in 2019.Jones, who is currently seeking a long-term extension with the Falcons, has record-smashing expectations for the upcoming season."Well, I'm not a prediction-type guy, but I might mess around and go three (thousand yards), you know what I’m talking about," Jones said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter."I'm not ever going to lie to you, I’m going crazy this year," he added. "I'm going crazy. I've been doing everything that I need to do. I'm taking care of my body. Physically and mentally, I'll be ready to go."Jones set franchise records in receptions (136) and yards (1,871) in 2015 and led the league in receiving yards last year with 1,677.The current NFL record for receiving yards in a single season was set by the Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson, who had 1,954 in 2012.Jones reported to training camp despite lacking a new long-term contract, and the six-time Pro Bowler stated the absence of a deal doesn't weigh on him."As far as the contract, I don’t go to sleep thinking about it," Jones said. "I don’t wake up thinking about it. I just try to be the best person that I can be today and then when tomorrow comes, I’m going to try and be the best person I can that day."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jason Garrett hasn't heard of potential Ezekiel Elliott holdout
When Dallas Cowboys training camp begins Friday, head coach Jason Garrett expects All-Pro running back Ezekiel Elliott to be there."Yeah, we anticipate that. I've heard nothing different on that," Garrett said, per DallasCowboys.com's Rob Phillips.A report surfaced last week that Elliott has privately said he'd hold out from training camp if he doesn't receive a contract extension."We're just focused on our team and the guys who are going to be there. Zeke's had a great offseason and certainly excited about what he can do for our football team," Garrett said.Elliott is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal and, as a two-time NFL rushing leader, is scheduled to earn $3.8 million this season and $9 million on his fifth-year option. The Cowboys have been trying to prioritize their contract extensions, as quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver Amari Cooper are entering the final year of their deals.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Derek Carr, Nick Foles popular bets to win NFL MVP
When most fans consider 2019 NFL MVP favorites, the names Mitchell Trubisky, Nick Foles, and Derek Carr likely won't be called to mind. However, when it comes to the betting market at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, those are the three most popular picks to win the award.Much has already been written about Trubisky, who opened at 200-1 to claim the honor and saw his odds shorten to 60-1 in just two days. SuperBook race and sports manager Derek Wilkinson said that only Trubisky bets arrived in the first 48 hours after the odds were released. While Trubisky may be a long shot to win, the flood of money on him isn't surprising. Sharp bettors look for value, and even if you aren't a Trubisky fan, he's the quarterback of a team expected to compete for a Super Bowl title. The Bears are 6-1 to win the NFC, behind only the Rams (4-1) and Saints (4-1). It's not inconceivable that the Bears could be the top seed in the NFC playoffs, which would make Trubisky an MVP candidate. But why are bettors putting money on Carr and Foles? The Jaguars are 20-1 to win the AFC, while the Raiders have the second-longest odds at 30-1 and appear to still be in rebuilding mode after finishing 4-12 last season. One reason for Car seeing money at the SuperBook is regional bias. Wilkinson said people in Las Vegas are excited about the Raiders and fans are coming in betting money on Carr. At most New Jersey sportsbooks, Carr's odds to win MVP remain at 100-1.It's not only public money being bet on Carr in Las Vegas, though. The Raiders' quarterback is the SuperBook's third-largest liability to win NFL MVP, so some sharps are on him too. "We take a few more bets and we'll be over $100,000 in liability on him," said Wilkinson.Foles is an interesting player because the SuperBook actually moved his odds from 100-1 to 200-1. When a certain team or player - in this case, Trubisky - is drawing a lot of action, oddsmakers will sometimes lengthen the odds on another option in hopes of bringing money back to the sportsbook. That's the case with Foles. The SuperBook moved his odds because it was happy to have over six figures of liability on a player it doesn't believe has a chance to win MVP."We don't want to raise a guy like Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rogers, who we think may actually win and take a bunch of money on them," said Wilkinson. "We would rather have the liability on a player we don't think will win but is good enough to draw money. The wise guys around town always look for value, so when they see us raise Foles to 200-1, they'll jump all over it."To put Carr's odds in perspective, former MVP Cam Newton is 60-1 at the SuperBook. It comes down to perceived value. Trubisky, Carr, and Foles may not look like legitimate MVP contenders, but remember, Mahomes opened last year at 100-1 and was shortened to 30-1 before the start of the season. Will history repeat itself with another long shot cashing this year? Wilkinson doesn't think so, particularly when it comes to Carr."I don't think he has any shot," said Wilkinson. "We're OK taking this kind of liability on him. We'll probably let it get well over six figures and if it turns out he is in the mix, we'll start to adjust the odds on some other guys to get money back. Right now, we feel pretty comfortable."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Panthers will keep Newton on pitch count early in camp
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will throw a limited number of passes early in training camp as he reintegrates himself into the offense following offseason shoulder surgery."We have a plan, it's gonna be structured around our (offense's) installation," head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Wednesday, courtesy of Steve Reed of the Associated Press.Newton threw in a limited capacity during offseason OTAs and minicamp. He labored through a shoulder issue for the second half of last season before the Panthers shut him down for the final two games.Rivera noted the Panthers believe Newton is "ready to roll," but will take a cautious approach with the former MVP to ensure he doesn't reinjure himself."All of his reps will be monitored, they'll be scripted out and we'll just follow that pattern as we go through it," he said.Newton finished last season passing for 3,395 yards with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions across 14 outings.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns' Johnson attends start of camp despite trade request
Cleveland Browns running back Duke Johnson reported for training camp Wednesday amid a standoff over his future with the AFC North team, general manager John Dorsey confirmed.Johnson requested a trade away from Cleveland earlier in the offseason due to concerns about his playing time following the signing of Kareem Hunt, who's suspended for the first eight games of the season but is expected to eventually gain a significant role in the offense. The Browns have said they want to keep Johnson as the primary backup to Nick Chubb and are unlikely to move the veteran unless they're blown away by an offer.Agent Drew Rosenhaus - who Johnson hired July 11 to help push through a deal - apparently met with the team Tuesday to discuss his client's future.Johnson skipped voluntary workouts but was in attendance for mandatory minicamp last month. Report: Jaguars offered Ngakoue $19M per year in short-term deal
A lucrative short-term contract doesn't appear to be enough to get Yannick Ngakoue in Jacksonville Jaguars camp, as the pass-rusher did not report on Wednesday despite being offered a deal worth over $19 million per year, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The proposed contract would pay Ngakoue over $50 million in the first two seasons, Pelissero adds. The $19 million per year average would have made him the fourth highest-paid defensive end in football. The 24-year-old has proven adept at getting to the quarterback in his first three seasons. He's had years of eight, 12, and 9.5 sacks, having never missed a game in his career. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract, which pays $2.025 million for the season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Though Bobby Wagner wants a new deal from the Seattle Seahawks, he's still expected to report to camp Wednesday, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Wagner, however, will be cautious and may avoid putting himself in harm's way until he secures a new contract, Rapoport added. The linebacker is entering the final year of his four-year, $43-million deal. Peterson sued for allegedly defaulting on $5.2M loan
A Pennsylvania lender is suing Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson for allegedly defaulting on a $5.2 million loan, according to New York court documents that The Athletic's Daniel Kaplan obtained. The sum now stands at $6.6 million after legal fees and interest. Peterson used the loan to pay off other debts, including millions from a "payday lender."It's a separate case from the $2.4 million a Maryland judge ordered Peterson to pay back after he failed to repay a $4 million lending-service loan from 2016.A judge canceled Peterson's scheduled deposition Monday due to concerns about a conflict of interest. The legal counsel of the lender, DeAngelo Vehicle Sales, allegedly "surreptitiously represented" Peterson in another lawsuit and gained access to the running back's confidential information, including his NFL contract.Peterson took out a loss-of-value policy with Thrivest Specialty Funding in August 2016 while a member of the Minnesota Vikings. Three games into that campaign, he suffered a season-ending knee injury. He was released after the 2016 season and then signed a $3.5-million deal with the New Orleans Saints, triggering the insurance policy (the floor was set at $4 million, with the insurer paying the difference).DeAngelo Vehicle Sales purchased the claim from Thrivest. Peterson's lawyer, Scott Philbin, argues that the company then had its lawyer, Darren Heitner, advocate on Peterson's behalf. In doing so, DeAngelo Vehicle Sales obtained "confidential" information that's been used in the loan default case, Philbin wrote.Heitner denied any wrongdoing and cast doubt on Peterson's ability to repay the money."I have no reason to believe that he has the capacity to pay it back," Heitner told Kaplan. "It's very concerning that he has existing liabilities and that there are publicly announced large judgments against him. And so, you know, without even knowing whether he has the capacity to pay those debts … I have no confidence that he'll be able to make any other sort of payment."Peterson has earned nearly $100 million during his likely Hall of Fame career.Peterson's attorney Chase Carlson provided a statement Tuesday.

Dallas Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper is in no rush to secure his new contract and is awaiting the league's best wideouts to ink new agreements, sources told Yahoo's Charles Robinson.Cooper believes new deals for Julio Jones, Michael Thomas, and Tyreek Hill will raise the market for receivers, Robinson added. The 25-year-old will reportedly be attending training camp even without a new deal.Cooper, along with teammates Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Byron Jones, and Jaylon Smith, are all candidates for long-term extensions with the Cowboys. The three-time Pro Bowler was Dallas' leading receiving option after being acquired from the Oakland Raiders mid-season last year. Report: Giants have already decided on Manning for Week 1
Head coach Pat Shurmur previously stated the New York Giants will have an open competition for the team's starting quarterback position, however, that may not be the case.Eli Manning has already been tabbed to be the Week 1 starter over rookie Daniel Jones prior to any training camp battle, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Shurmur apparently hinted at an open competition in order to prepare Jones for a scenario where he would be needed in case of an injury, Garafolo added.Manning, 38, is entering his 16th season in the league after consecutive disappointing campaigns, while the 22-year-old Jones was the Giants' sixth overall selection in this year's draft.Manning threw for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last year, and will be without Odell Beckham Jr. in 2019.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Chargers, Gordon not close to extension
An extension for Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon isn't coming soon, as the team is "dug in" on its stance, sources told Yahoo's Charles Robinson.Gordon's threat to sit out into the regular season and request a trade if a new deal isn't made by Week 1 could be tested, Robinson adds. The 26-year-old is heading into the last season of his rookie contract on a fifth-year option worth $5.6 million.Gordon is reportedly seeking a deal aligned with Todd Gurley and Le'Veon Bell, the highest-paid running backs who earn average annual salaries of $14.38 million and $13.13 million, respectively. The two-time Pro Bowler previously stated his desire to stay in Los Angeles, but only if the two sides reach a respectable agreement."Just because we're going through contract issues right now doesn't mean I want to get traded," he said. "I love being a Charger. I don't want them to feel like I don't want to be there."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams is not expected to report to Washington Redskins training camp this week, reports NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Williams was absent from minicamp and reportedly upset with the team's handling of a medical situation that involved removing a growth from his head. He's also reportedly seeking a new deal with two years remaining on his $68-million contract.Williams has reached the Pro Bowl every year since 2012. When healthy, he's considered one of the best players at his position. As one of the senior members of the team, Williams' absence would leave a big hole in Washington's offensive line.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. DJ Durkin a guest coach at Falcons camp
The Atlanta Falcons have invited disgraced former Maryland football coach DJ Durkin to be a guest coach at training camp.Durkin was the head coach of the Terrapins when offensive lineman Jordan McNair died after suffering from heatstroke during a May 2018 workout. The coach was placed on administrative leave following reports of a toxic culture under his watch. He was reinstated, but when members of the team walked out in protest Durkin was fired a day later.Falcons head coach Dan Quinn was a Florida Gators defensive coach alongside Durkin from 2011 to 2012."The fact that I know this coach firsthand, I know what his character is, and then the due diligence that goes with that, I would certainly hope that anyone covering the team or the fan base knows that I always have the team's best interest in mind and would never put anybody in a space that would be otherwise," Quinn said, according to ESPN's Vaughn McClure."We did all of our due diligence of calling everybody at Maryland and had our own follow-up to there. ... I think it's a huge advantage that you can have somebody of respect and can look at some certain things to help your team in the evaluation,'' Quinn added.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Edelman out 3 weeks with thumb injury
New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman will be absent when the team's training camp begins July 25 as he's sidelined for about three weeks with a thumb injury, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing league sources. The injury is described as "mild trauma," a source informed NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. While the Super Bowl LIII MVP won't be out long, his loss will be felt because he's the most experienced member of a shallow receiving corps. The Patriots are moving forward with Phillip Dorsett, Dontrelle Inman, Braxton Berrios, and rookie N'Keal Harry catching passes in camp. Veteran Demaryius Thomas will reportedly begin camp on the physically unable to perform list after being involved in a car crash in February and rupturing his Achilles in December.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: WR-needy Patriots work out Justin Hunter
Short on healthy receivers in the wake of Julian Edelman's thumb injury, the New England Patriots reportedly worked out free-agent wideout Justin Hunter on Monday, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The well-traveled six-year vet spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing in 12 games and catching seven passes. The Tennessee Titans second-round pick in 2013 also spent time with the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.New England could use an extra pair of hands with Edelman and Demaryius Thomas sidelined for the beginning of training camp. Healthy receivers remaining on the roster include Phillip Dorsett, Dontrelle Inman, Maurice Harris, Braxton Berrios, and rookie N'Keal Harry.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Beckham: Giants 'weren't man enough' to tell me about trade
The Browns open training camp this week, but before Odell Beckham Jr. prepares for his first season in Cleveland, he had a few more things to say about his time with the New York Giants.Beckham discussed the fallout from the March trade that shipped him out of the Big Apple and said he learned of the deal when he was inundated with messages while heading to dinner in Paris."My initial reaction was not disappointment ... I felt disrespected," Beckham said to GQ's Mark Anthony Green. "Like, after everything I've done for them. This is me being honest: This team has not been good for the last six years. Period. Even the year we went to the playoffs and everyone was talking about this and that. And we went there, and I didn't have a great playoff game. Don't get me wrong, I had a terrible game. But I left the game with seven targets, and I'm supposed to be your No. 1 receiver."... I felt disrespected because I felt like I was a main reason at keeping that brand alive. They were getting prime-time games, still, as a 5-11 team. Why? Because people want to see the show. You want to see me play. That's just real rap. I'm not sitting here like, 'It's because of me.' But let's just be real. That's why we're still getting prime-time games. I felt disrespected they weren't even man enough to even sit me down to my face and tell me what's going on."Beckham insisted he has nothing but respect for Giants president and CEO John Mara and pointed to general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur for shipping him out seven months after he signed a five-year, $90-million extension with the team.Even after signing the deal, Beckham said he felt unwanted and was seeking a fresh start before the 2018 season."I can't do this anymore. I just can't do it. I wasn't happy," he said. "I wasn't in a good place. ... I feel like everything is about happiness, and I just was not."Beckham said he contemplated retiring at just 24 - his age during the 2016 season."Twenty-four years old. Just off it. To love something so much to a place where it is my everything, and to watch it be tainted, or all kinds of things be in the middle of it," he said. "Like, it hurt me to my soul. It be like loving someone and putting them on such a level to where life is about them and you love that person through anything. Through the good, the bad. And to watch them do something so heinous and vulgar. Something just so, like, almost unforgivable. You still love them, but it's, like, wow."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Predicting winners of 7 intriguing training-camp battles
NFL training camps are all about competition. It's the first time players are truly allowed to go full tilt in the offseason, and with livelihoods on the line, no one wants to ease up.Let's examine the seven most interesting camp battles and predict who will emerge as the winners.Josh Rosen vs. Ryan FitzpatrickThere's a disappointing lack of quarterback competitions at camps this season, but the battle set to take place between Rosen and Fitzpatrick appears to be a true coin flip. Some Miami Dolphins fans are already daydreaming about how Tua Tagovailoa would look in aqua green. First, however, the team needs to see what it has in Rosen, having acquired him for pennies on the dollar just a year after the Arizona Cardinals drafted him 10th overall.Rosen was nothing short of terrible as a rookie. He struggled hugely under pressure (he posted a passer rating of 38.1; the NFL average was 67.1), and only Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson had worse adjusted completion percentages, per Pro Football Focus. But few quarterbacks, let alone rookies, could've succeeded behind the Cardinals' terrible line and in an offense that changed coordinators midseason.Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance in 2018, storming out of the gate with Jameis Winston suspended to start the season. After throwing eight touchdowns in the first two games - a reminder of the heights he can reach, even if he's never able to stay there - Fitzpatrick cooled off and was eventually benched for Winston. That's the story of the journeyman's career. Even though he's a guaranteed roller coaster, a team comes down with Fitzmagic fever seemingly every season. And the Dolphins are already showing symptoms:

Dolphins place Norton on reserve/non-football injury list
The Miami Dolphins have removed defensive tackle Kendrick Norton from their active roster with a non-football injury designation, the team announced Sunday.Norton, who had his arm amputated after a car accident in early July, will still earn his full salary after the team placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list. He was cited as at fault for the accident due to an improper lane change that caused him to hit another vehicle and a concrete barrier. The 22-year-old underwent six surgeries before being released from hospital Thursday. All of his medical bills will be covered by either the Dolphins or the NFL.The Carolina Panthers selected the Miami product in the seventh round of the 2018 draft. He never played an NFL snap.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
