Former Tennessee Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan announced his retirement on Monday."My purpose in life is bigger than the game," Morgan told ESPN's Turron Davenport. "What football taught me was the power of influence. My goal is to create better and more meaningful opportunities for marginalized communities to break the cycles of generational poverty and build greater wealth and economic mobility."Morgan, who was a free agent this offseason, spent all nine years of his playing career in Tennessee. The club selected him 16th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. The 30-year-old ends his career with 44.5 sacks and 306 total tackles. His sack total places him sixth in franchise history.Morgan is the second Titans linebacker to retire this offseason as Brian Orakpo decided to end his career in December.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Houston Texans and pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney aren't expected to reach a long-term deal before Monday's deadline for franchise-tagged players to do so, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Without an agreement, Clowney would play the 2019 season on a one-year tender worth $15.9 million.Earlier this offseason, it was reported that Clowney and the Texans were far from an agreement. They apparently haven't gotten much closer despite front-office changes in Houston, which included the firing of general manager Brian Gaine.Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, totaled 47 tackles, nine sacks, and three fumble recoveries during 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Although running backs are largely viewed as short-term commodities in the NFL, Melvin Gordon believes differently. The Los Angeles Chargers rusher, who's currently holding out for a new deal, cites Ezekiel Elliott's six-game absence from the Dallas Cowboys in 2017 as a prime example of a running back's true value."Clearly, you seen what happened when Zeke was out. It was a completely different team," Gordon said Saturday, according to ProFootballTalk's Charean Williams. "You can replace average backs. Yeah, just plug them in. But a great back? You can't just replace a great back. ... It will be a difference, man. We do so much for people to even try to devalue us. We block. We've got to run the ball. We've got to pick up protections. We have to catch the ball. We have to do what receivers do. We have to do our thing. We have so much that goes through us."I tell people (running back is) the hardest position outside of quarterback ... That's the only position (that's harder) because you have to know so much. Outside of that, running back is the next hardest position on the field, and we should get paid as such."Although Gordon has reportedly turned down extension offers from the Chargers, he expressed interest in remaining with the team.

Safety Eric Weddle is suiting up for his third team as he enters his 13th season in the NFL.The Los Angeles Rams signed Weddle earlier this offseason, and the six-time Pro Bowler is excited to join one of the league's best secondaries led by corners Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters."Those guys are super, super smart," Weddle said of the cornerbacks on "NFL Total Access" on Friday. "The instincts are off the charts. Playmaking ability. ... Those two are the best I've ever played with in my career. Guys that play with vision, play the ball, understand routes, trust the safety that is going to alert them and put them in a position to make plays knowing that I have their backs."I'm extremely excited to get on the field with them, give them those live reps, live-game atmosphere, and take this secondary to the next level."Weddle, Talib, and Peters together hold 13 Pro Bowl and four All-Pro selections. The trio will anchor the secondary, but the former Baltimore Ravens safety acknowledged star pass-rusher Aaron Donald's importance to the defense."We have a chance to be special on defense with the pieces that we have," Weddle said. "Obviously, starting with A.D. Obviously, one of the best players in the NFL at all positions and now being able to scheme up and do things that help him to give him an advantage even more so, to let him wreak havoc. He's an amazing talent, an amazing person, the way he works every day. There's a reason he's the best player in the league."Under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, the reigning NFC champs finished third in takeaways last season, grabbing 18 interceptions and 12 fumbles.Weddle, who posted 68 tackles, one sack, and three pass breakups last year, was also excited about joining a pass-heavy division and going against NFC West rivals Russell Wilson, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Kyler Murray."The teams that like to air it out a little more than others - that's just more opportunity to make some plays and make some picks," he said. "I'm excited to get in this division."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The security guard Ezekiel Elliott shoved at a Las Vegas music festival in May filed a complaint with police on Friday and hopes criminal charges are laid.Kyle Johnson said he decided to press charges against Elliott because the NFL didn't discipline the Dallas Cowboys star. The running back also didn't give Johnson the genuine apology he sought."To not have anything happen to him, the NFL is basically saying it's okay to go to Vegas, get obliterated, and shove people over fences," Johnson told Enzo Marino of FOX5.Elliott was handcuffed immediately after the altercation, which a bystander filmed, but he wasn't arrested or charged.NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn't suspend or fine Elliott after the two met to discuss the incident. Elliott publicly expressed regret about the situation, saying his first apology to Johnson was sincere."Just very unsympathetic," Johnson said of Elliott's remorse. "Like, 'I have to do this, I'm being forced to do this, I don't want to be here right now' kind of thing."Police must launch an investigation before deciding whether to charge Elliott. If charged, Elliott would likely be accused of battery. In a statement sent to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Saturday, Elliott's attorneys accused Johnson of trying to extort their client."Over the course of the past several weeks, Mr. Elliott has been the target of extortion," said Scott Rosenblum and Jason Lampert. "Kyle Johnson's filing of a criminal complaint against Mr. Elliott in connection with the Las Vegas incident is the latest attempt to do so. Mr. Elliott and his team are in contact with all of the proper authorities and are fully cooperating with them in their investigations."Johnson's father, Kelly, told FOX5 that "Zeke would have been the next guy on the ground" if he was present during the incident.Elliott led the NFL in rushing last season for the second time in three years. However, he's been involved in several off-field incidents during his brief career.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

A jury found Los Angeles Rams strength and conditioning coach Ted Rath not guilty of three counts of sexual battery Friday, according to Megan Diskin of the Ventura County Star.A neighbor accused Rath of touching her buttocks and genitalia while she slept in her bed. Rath and a group of others had visited the woman's Moorpark, Calif., home following a fundraiser and a stop at a local bar.The woman testified that she was awoken by Rath touching her and pretended to mistake him for her husband, stopping the advances. Rath pleaded not guilty and maintained that he didn't remember the events of that evening. His attorneys argued that his memory problems resulted from a combination of alcohol consumption and the side effects of medication he was taking after suffering a stroke. The 35-year-old would have faced a year in custody for each misdemeanor offense against him and a lifetime registration as a sex offender."All I can say is that I'm very grateful the jury was quick in their decision," said Rath's attorney Vicki Podberesky. "They saw right through the prosecution's case and went right to the truth. And that's all this is about."Rath has been on a leave of absence from the Rams and did not attend the Super Bowl in February. At the time, the team said he was recovering from a medical procedure. In a statement Friday, the Rams said: "Now that the trial is complete, we will revisit Ted Rath's status. In addition, we will continue to assist the NFL as it completes its separate investigation."Rath was highlighted in an NFL Films video in January in which he was referred to as Sean McVay's "Get Back Coach," tasked with keeping the Rams head coach off the field of play during games.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Following an uncharacteristically poor 2018 season, the Green Bay Packers recorded a profit of $724,000 in the latest fiscal year, down 97.9 percent from $34.1 million the previous year, The Associated Press reports. The Packers brought in a record $75 million the fiscal year prior to that.Green Bay finished 6-9-1 and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The team made the postseason each year from 2009-16.Also affecting the franchise's bottom line was the $134-million contract extension given to quarterback Aaron Rodgers in August and the expensive firing of Mike McCarthy and hiring of Matt LaFleur as head coach."From a financial standpoint, it was a unique year for the Packers," admitted team president Mark Murphy.During free agency, the team handed expensive deals to Za'Darius Smith, Preston Smith, Adrian Amos, and Billy Turner."We were a little more aggressive than we've been in a number of years," Murphy said.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. With last season's trade request behind him, Patrick Peterson is focused on trying to finish his career with the Arizona Cardinals."I would love to be a Cardinal for life," the star cornerback said Friday on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "But things happen. Hell, something can change next month. Things happen, not only in football but in the world in general. So, I would love to be a Cardinal for life. I would love to be one of those guys to bring that organization its first championship."Peterson has spent his first eight seasons in the desert, earning a Pro Bowl selection at the end of each year. The 29-year-old asked out of Arizona last season when the Cardinals were in the middle of a league-worst 3-13 campaign. He later retracted his request."I was just frustrated," he said. "I love Arizona, I definitely want to be there. Just that time of the year, last year, like I said, it was just very, very tough to deal with." ... People upstairs can trade players and try to shop players around whenever they need to, so I didn't see what was wrong with me asking for a trade at the time."Trade winds swirled again in April following a report that Peterson was irate with a member of Cardinals management. A six-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs squashed whatever value he would have had, however."Right now I'm in a very, very happy place with the team," he said.Peterson has two years left on his contract.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The police officer who mishandled the traffic stop of New England Patriots linebacker Elandon Roberts received a verbal reprimand.Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said Friday that he apologized to Roberts for Deputy Adam Watkins' conduct, according to The Associated Press. The traffic stop took place in March, outside Roberts' home. It took nearly 10 minutes for Roberts to be informed that he was being pulled over for speeding.Watkins requested backup to deal with Roberts, who he referred to as a "big black man" who "wouldn't comply." Watkins ordered Roberts to return to his car after Roberts told him they were at his house. Watkins also threatened to arrest Roberts' wife if she didn't go back inside after she came outside the house to witness the situation."The way he interacted with his wife, I didn't appreciate the tone," Nehls said of Watkins. In a statement that preceded the apology, Roberts accused the officer of racial bias and said he felt harassed."Unfortunately, these types of things are happening all too often to African Americans," Roberts said. "People are becoming desensitized to them. Being harassed in your own yard simply because you are a 'big black man' should never become the norm. To the person being harassed, it is frightening, disrespectful, and embarrassing."Nehls said he had no issue with Watkins, a Caucasian officer, using race to describe Roberts."I think there have been traffic stops and interactions between white and black that have caused some of the most horrible, civil unrest in this country," he said. "We haven't experienced that in Fort Bend County."Roberts was traveling 59 mph in a 35 mph zone, prompting the traffic stop. Sherrif's Capt. NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith rejected the idea of an 18-game regular season going into the next collective bargaining agreement (CBA)."I don't see an 18-game schedule - under any circumstance - being in the best interest of our players," Smith said Friday, according to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe. "If somebody wants to make an 18-game proposal, we'll look at it. I haven't seen anything that makes me think that it would be good for the players."Smith confirmed that the league did propose an 18-game slate wherein each individual player would be capped at 16 contests. NFL owners have long sought to extend the regular season in order to increase revenue. In exchange, they would trim the preseason to two games."Fans and media discuss what would happen to ratings and revenue or whether (18 games) is a good idea or bad idea," Smith said. "For us, it comes down to who players are as men and is it good for us. If a coal miner is willing to spend more time in the hole, does it likely result in more money? Yeah. Is that a good thing for him as a person? Probably not. That's the question nobody confronts. It's easy to say it's more money. But is it good for us? The answer is no."The current CBA will expire in 2021. The NFL and NFLPA have already started negotiations on a new deal, with Smith categorizing the talks thus far as "positive."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. As collective bargaining negotiations are set to begin between the NFL and the players' union, team owners are broaching the idea of an 18-game regular season, according to Andrew Beaton of The Wall Street Journal. In search of new revenue streams, owners have long been believed to be interested in expanding the regular season. This time around, owners have reportedly attached a 16-game limit for individual players to their proposal in order to assuage fears about the player-safety implications of two extra games. Expanding rosters is also part of the discussion, reports Beaton. There are drawbacks to such a proposal. Healthy star players could be forced to miss late-season games with playoff implications if they've already reached their 16-game limit. The financial benefits, however, are obvious. Two extra games could generate roughly $2.5 billion in league revenue, Beaton reports, citing an NFLPA analysis. The NFL and the NFLPA have scheduled three negotiating sessions for July 17-19, ESPN's Josina Anderson reports, citing a source. It was reported in June the NFL wants to reach a new collective bargaining agreement by September.- With h/t to ProFootballTalkCopyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, Ezekiel Elliott, Byron Jones, and Jaylon Smith are all in contention to secure long-term extensions from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. While the prevailing thinking holds that the salary cap makes it impossible for teams to retain all of their young stars unless some of those players agree to team-friendly deals, the Cowboys' starting quarterback believes his teammates shouldn't take less than they're worth."For somebody to say you can only take so much because of the salary cap or you can only do this or that, I don't know how fair that is to say," Prescott said, according to USA Today's Jori Epstein. "Because with gambling, with everything going into this league, everything is going to continue to keep going up."It's important for all these guys to get every bit of their worth. I want to see Zeke the highest paid. I want to see Amari the highest paid. I want to see myself up there. And I don't think any of that is too far-fetched. Because ... a year or two later, you're not going to be the highest paid. That's just the way the game goes."In each of the past six seasons, the salary cap has increased by at least $10 million. This year, it's set at $188.2 million, $11 million more than the season prior. Considering other potential revenue sources and the collective bargaining agreement currently being negotiated, that salary figure could continue to inflate."I don't think it's fair to sit there and say, 'This guy can't get that because he needs the rest of the team,'" Prescott said. "The rest of the team can all get theirs with the way the league is trending."Prescott is due $2 million in 2019 as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. He earned $1.62 million in his first three seasons combined. The 25-year-old's potential extension could rival that of the Philadelphia Eagles' Carson Wentz, who became the NFL's fourth-highest-paid player with an average annual salary of $32 million. It was reported in June that negotiations between Prescott and the Cowboys on a new deal haven't made much progress, although it doesn't seem to bother the quarterback."For the most part, obviously you want to get closure and obviously you want to get it done," he said. "But the Cowboys probably feel the same way that I do: Nobody wants to take anything that’s not fair to the other."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Running back Melvin Gordon says he will not report to camp unless he receives a new contract from the Los Angeles Chargers, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Gordon will also demand a trade from the team if he does not get a new deal, Schefter added. The 26-year-old is heading into the last season of his contract on a fifth-year option worth $5.6 million.Gordon reportedly received an extension offer from the Chargers that did not align with the contracts of other top running backs such as Le'Veon Bell and Todd Gurley. His dissatisfaction with negotiations led him and his agent, Damarius Bilbo, to address the matter publicly in an effort to either secure a better offer or force a trade.Bilbo said there's a "strong possibility" the running back could sit out into the regular season if a satisfying outcome is not reached, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero."He's very serious. He's worked his butt off and the fifth-year option is a result of where he was drafted. It's what it is," Bilbo told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "But if we'd gotten a respectable offer, we wouldn't be here. But he felt disrespected. He's very serious."The two-time Pro Bowler has led the Chargers in rushing yards every year since being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Three teams selected quarterbacks in the first round of this year's NFL draft, with another taking a pass-thrower in Round 2. But there's no guarantee we'll see each quarterback debut during their respective rookie seasons.Last year, five QBs were taken on Night 1 of the draft. Four of them were starting by Week 3 and the fifth took over in Week 11.Here are the circumstances in which the first four passers drafted this year find themselves, and some educated guesses on if and when each will start in Year 1.Kyler Murray, CardinalsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThere's little room for discussion here. Unlike last season, when the Cardinals had Sam Bradford starting in front of Josh Rosen, there's no veteran mentor to stand in Murray's way. The runway is clear for the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft.Head coach Kliff Kingsbury has suggested it's no certainty Murray begins the season as the starting quarterback, offering only a "we'll see." His own general manager overruled him, though. As Steve Keim said in May, "we didn't draft him No. 1 overall to ride the pine."Kingsbury is building his offense around the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. Expect Brett Hundley to be holding a clipboard in the season opener.Prediction: Murray debuts Week 1 vs. LionsDaniel Jones, GiantsFrederick Breedon / Getty Images Sport / GettyJones' path to the starter's job is far more challenging than Murray's. The Giants have expressed optimal confidence in Eli Manning continuing as their starting quarterback. General manager Dave Gettleman said after the draft the team may employ the Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers model, in which Jones sits on the bench "for three years."Manning's performance in 2019 will determine how soon we see Jones. Head coach Pat Shurmur already put the onus on the veteran, telling him it's his job "to keep this guy off the field."The Giants are in full rebuild mode. Though they'll play a fourth-place schedule in 2019, they're expected to struggle to compete. If New York is hovering around .500 and Manning is playing above his 2017 and 2018 numbers, the team will likely redshirt Jones.New York does own a late bye week, an ideal scenario to grant Jones an extra week of preparation before taking over. It's followed, however, by matchups with heavyweights Chicago, Green Bay, and Philadelphia in Weeks 12, 13, and 14. The Eagles contest is a Monday nighter, and it's unlikely Jones would play Week 15 on a short week, even if it is against the lowly Dolphins. If the season is lost late in the year, a softer start for Jones may come on the road against the Redskins, who could be starting a rookie quarterback of their own in 2019.Prediction: Jones debuts Week 16 at RedskinsDwayne Haskins, RedskinsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyIf Haskins is to make his pro debut this season, he'll have to beat out two veterans in training camp and overcome the protests of a franchise legend.Joe Theismann believes Haskins should sit his rookie year, especially considering the Redskins' early-season schedule. They open against the Eagles, Cowboys, Bears, Giants, and Patriots - a difficult stretch for even the most hardened quarterback.Case Keenum, whom Washington acquired in a pre-draft trade, figures to start the year under center. Should he and the team play poorly through that opening stretch, the calls for Haskins should be loud and sustained by Week 6 when the Dolphins are on tap. There's little reason to rush the future of the franchise, especially a quarterback with just 14 college starts under his belt, but top QB prospects are rarely held back when they get to the pros.Mitch Trubisky entered the league with 13 college starts and was under center for the Bears by Week 5 of his rookie season.Prediction: Haskins debuts Week 6 at DolphinsDrew Lock, BroncosJoe Amon/MediaNews Group/The Denver Post via Getty Images / Denver Post / GettyLock was the lone quarterback taken in the second round of this year's draft, and he makes this list because there exists a potential scenario in which the rocket-armed passer sees live action in 2019.Broncos GM John Elway traded for Joe Flacco under the belief the 34-year-old veteran is just entering his prime. The expectation in Denver is for Flacco to start all 16 games and have the Broncos challenging for a playoff spot this upcoming season.Their schedule, however, is unforgiving. The Broncos face the Bears, Packers, Jaguars, Chargers, Chiefs, Colts, and Browns - all before their Week 10 bye. The Vikings, Chargers, Chiefs, and Texans await afterward. If the Broncos are out of the playoff picture by December, it's possible the rookie finishes out the stretch against the Lions and Raiders. This is all dependent on Lock's development through the year, of course.Flacco is owed $20 million in 2020 and $24 million in 2021, but the Broncos could cut him without any dead money counting against their salary cap. They can pull the plug on the Flacco experiment at any time and start the clock on the Lock era.Prediction: Lock debuts Week 16 vs. LionsCopyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The NFL has temporarily shelved its full-time officials program amid ongoing labor negotiations with the NFL Referees Association, sources told Kevin Seifert of ESPN.The league will, therefore, revert its entire 122-person officiating roster back to part-time status. However, the program could be reintroduced before a collective bargaining agreement is finalized, according to Seifert. The move will likely have minimal effect on in-game officiating. The program was designed to get referees involved in rule development and competition committee discussions during the offseason. A group of officials were given full-time status and pay through the program to prioritize their NFL work. All officials work full-time from the preseason to the culmination of the playoffs.Under the program - which began in 2019 - 20 percent of the roster was selected for consulting and additional training, while the remaining officials were kept as part-timers who were required to stay away from the league from the end of the season to mid-May.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. New Orleans Saints rookie defensive end Carl Granderson, who had been accused of inappropriately touching two women while at the University of Wyoming, was sentenced to six months in jail Thursday after a judge rejected the terms of his plea agreement, according to Davis Potter of the Casper Star-Tribune.Granderson was facing charges of third-degree sexual assault and sexual battery. He pleaded no contest to sexual battery and unlawful contact, both misdemeanors, to avoid the felony trial that was slated to begin Monday. However, Judge Tori Kricken rejected the one-year probation punishment laid out in the deal, ordering for Granderson to immediately begin serving his sentence on the count of unlawful contact. In addition, Kricken handed down a one-year prison sentence for the sexual battery charge, but it will be suspended with one year of supervised probation following his jail time. After hearing emotional testimonies from two female students who said they were woken to find Granderson molesting them, Kricken said Granderson had shown little remorse for his actions. Both victims argued the plea deal was too lenient.Granderson went undrafted before signing a free-agent deal with the Saints in April.Head coach Sean Payton was asked in May about the decision to sign Granderson despite his legal issues."We felt real comfortable with everything we knew, and so far he’s done a good job here," Payton said, according to The Times-Picayune.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cleveland Browns running back Duke Johnson signed with super-agent Drew Rosenhaus on Thursday as he continues to attempt to force a trade away from the AFC North team, per ESPN.Johnson has remained intent on leaving Cleveland since making the request in April. The veteran back parted ways with his former agent last week to team up with the highly renowned Rosenhaus, who engineered moves to get defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah and receiver Breshad Perriman out of Cleveland this offseason.Browns general manager John Dorsey said he was unwilling to move Johnson - who's set to be the primary backup to Nick Chubb, at least until Kareem Hunt's eight-game suspension is up - and called him "a viable member of this organization."Johnson's demand apparently caused friction within Cleveland's locker room. Baker Mayfield took issue with the running back wanting off the team in June, saying to reporters that Johnson should commit or "get out of the way."The young quarterback's public comments reportedly led to a group of veteran players voicing their displeasure with how he handled the situation.Johnson rushed for just 201 yards on 40 carries last season, but he was a big part of the passing game, hauling in 47 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Every NFL head coach wants to win a Super Bowl, and all 32 would likely sacrifice almost anything to do so.However, the Tennessee Titans' Mike Vrabel may be willing to go to greater lengths than his fellow head coaches are when it comes to securing a Lombardi Trophy.Vrabel was asked by Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan on the "Bussin' With the Boys" podcast if he'd "cut off his dick" to win a Super Bowl, and the coach barely hesitated before giving his answer."(I've) been married 20 years. Yeah, probably," Vrabel answered amid an eruption of laughter.

Nearly 40 employees of the Washington Redskins - many working in the marketing and business side - have left the team since January, reports Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan.The departures have come after the team fired president of business operations Brian Lafemina in December, less than a year after he was hired."I've been told this by multiple, multiple people. Almost 40 people have left, behind the scenes. We're not talking about football players or coaches or anything like that. ... Nobody wants to work there. It's a terrible culture," Russell said.Russell added, "Nobody believes in the direction and leadership of that franchise."Under the watch of owner Dan Snyder and president Bruce Allen, who's been with the team since 2010, the Redskins have finished above .500 and made the playoffs just once in the last eight years, losing their only wild-card game.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Despite accumulating a 3-36-1 record over two-and-a-half seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Hue Jackson believes he left it all out there as head coach."I think during those times, it was probably some of the best coaching I did, contrary to what people think, because you're always doing anything and everything you can to find a way to win," Jackson told WFNZ Charlotte's "Wilson & Parcell" on Wednesday. "Now, whether it happens or not, that's not up to me sometimes. Again, I think I learned a lot being in that situation."Jackson was fired by the Browns midway through the 2018 season. He went on to secure an assistant position with the Cincinnati Bengals, but the club let him go in the offseason. The 53-year-old started his career by going 8-8 with the Oakland Raiders in 2011 and holds an all-time head coaching record of 11-44-1. His .205 winning percentage is the second-worst in NFL history among coaches with at least 40 games.Currently without a coaching gig, Jackson is seeking a chance to change the perception of his career."I mean, just because of the situation in Cleveland doesn't mean that you can't coach. There's a lot of great coaches who came before me that coached there and went on and did great things. Sometimes, the situation is different. I think if people dig in and really take the time to look at the overall situation there, maybe they would understand it more. At the same time, I understand what narrative gets put out there, that's what people know."Hopefully, people will think back to the times when I've put myself in that position. I had to be doing something right. To go back and be a coordinator again or be a head coach again, I do believe it's in my future. So I've just got to go work through the process and see where it goes."- With h/t to ProFootballTalkCopyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Houston Texans won't hire a general manager for the 2019 season, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.Houston fired Brian Gaine on June 7 in a move that caught the football world by surprise. The Texans then attempted to lure top personnel man Nick Caserio from the New England Patriots but dropped their pursuit after the Super Bowl champions filed tampering charges. The Texans will divide GM duties among front-office members Matt Bazirgan, James Liipfert, Chris Olsen, and Jack Easterby. One of the top items on the Texans' agenda is figuring out what to do with Jadeveon Clowney, who's yet to sign his franchise tag. Disgruntled kicker Robbie Gould hasn't decided whether he'll retire, hold out, or play if the San Francisco 49ers keep a stranglehold on his rights."I don't really have a plan right now," he told Cam Inman of The Mercury News.Gould has yet to sign the franchise tag he received from the 49ers following last season. He requested a trade to be closer to his family in Chicago, but nothing has materialized. The 36-year-old has until July 15 to work out a long-term deal with San Francisco, an unlikely possibility given his geographical preferences. After that, the franchise tender is the only contract he'll be allowed to sign for the rest of the season under league rules."We've been negotiating for 17 months and it's been a complicated situation," Gould said of his status with the 49ers. "I'm at the point where my agent is going to handle it. If there's anything I need to know about, then I'll make a decision."When I need to know of something of substance and that I have to make a decision on, he'll call me. I've been able to focus on my training and spending time with my family and being around my kids."Gould was absent from the 49ers throughout their offseason program. The team cannot fine him for missing mandatory activities because he isn't under contract.Gould converted 97 percent of his field-goal tries last year and is statistically the second-most accurate kicker in NFL history. There is an obvious trade link to the Bears, who previously employed Gould for 11 seasons and currently have instability at the position, but the veteran is open to being traded to other teams."I never said I want to go back there," Gould explained. "I just said I want to be closer to my family. That doesn't necessarily mean (the Bears)."The 49ers begin training camp July 26. Gould isn't sure if - or when - he'll report to the club, assuming he doesn't get his desired trade."I've been through several holdouts, I've been through a lockout season, I've been through not being on a team and showing up in Week 6," he said. "I'd say there is nothing that scares me anymore in Year 15, because I feel I've been through it all."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Can you feel it? NFL training camps are just a couple of weeks away and preseason games will kick off in a month. The new season brings renewed hope for teams and another opportunity for bettors to find value with projected win totals. The team drawing the most interest at multiple sportsbooks is the new-look Cleveland Browns. The Browns went 1-31 from 2016-17 but improved to 7-8-1 last season - going over their projected win total of six - after firing former head coach Hue Jackson in late October. This year, Cleveland's win total opened at nine (-110) at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, but senior oddsmaker Alan Berg said an influx of sharp money on the over quickly moved the juice to -130. Since then, it's been all public money on the Browns, too, making them the most popular win total bet at Caesars."In terms of liability, it's Browns over, Bears over, Lions over, and Bills over," Berg said. "The sharps are on the Browns for season wins and the division, but the public is just all over them no matter what it is. They love the Browns."Here is a complete list of projected team win totals courtesy of the Westgate LV SuperBook, where the Browns also opened at nine and haven't moved:TeamWin TotalPatriots11Chiefs10.5Rams10.5Saints10.5Colts10Eagles10Chargers9.5Bears9Browns9Cowboys9Packers9Vikings9Steelers9Seahawks8.5Texans8.5Falcons8.5Ravens8.549ers8Titans8Jaguars8Panthers7.5Jets7.5Bills7Broncos7Lions6.5Buccaneers6.5Redskins6.5Giants6Raiders6Bengals6Cardinals5Dolphins5Meanwhile, the Colts and Eagles opened with win totals at 9.5, but both teams were bet up to 10. SuperBook Race & Sports manager Derek Wilkinson said the Colts and Eagles are drawing the interest of both sharp and public bettors. Indianapolis opened at 20-1 to win the Super Bowl at the SuperBook in January, but has seen its odds shorten to 12-1. Philadelphia's odds to win the Super Bowl are now 7-1 after opening at 10-1.The same holds true at Caesars, where public money is pouring in on the over Colts win total."Last year sharps were targeting the Colts," Berg said. "This year they are a public team for sure. Sharps were on the Colts win total early when it was 9.5 but it's been all public money since the number went to 10. The public really likes the Colts this year."The defending Super Bowl Champion Patriots have the highest preseason win total for the fourth consecutive year. New England finished 11-5 in 2018, making it nine straight seasons the Patriots recorded 11 or more victories. Tom Brady and Co. have gone over their preseason win total 13 times since 2002.The Cardinals have a new coach in Kliff Kingsbury, but oddsmakers are expecting another long season in the desert. Arizona has the lowest projected win total for the second straight year. Both the Cardinals and Dolphins are sitting with win totals of five, followed by the Giants, Raiders, and Bengals at six.If you're looking for value, one win total I like is over the Redskins 6.5. Washington went 7-9 last year despite literally pulling its starting quarterbacks off the street following season-ending injuries to starter Alex Smith and backup Colt McCoy. The Redskins finished 15th in scoring defense (22.5 ppg) but that stat is misleading because the offense struggled for most of the year, often putting the defense in tough situations. Washington gave the ball away 26 times last season but still finished tied for eighth in turnover differential. The Redskins will start either Case Keenum or rookie Dwayne Haskins at quarterback this season. Whoever wins the starting job will bring more stability to the position than journeymen Josh Johnson and Mark Sanchez did a year ago. Washington will also welcome running back Derrius Guice into the fold. The second-round pick missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL.

With the Los Angeles Rams set to open training camp in less than three weeks, all eyes will be on running back Todd Gurley and his left knee.Gurley is dealing with an "arthritic component to his knee" that will be managed. Although the star rusher is pleased with his progress to date, he admitted he won't fully understand his status until the summer practices."It's good, man. It's good," Gurley told NFL Network's Omar Ruiz, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "I'm just like, hey, we're going to find out in training camp, you know? Once training camp comes, you've got the preseason, but you don't have a lot in preseason."The 24-year-old previously stated he plans on fully participating in training camp, but he'll likely play limited preseason snaps, if any.Despite ongoing concerns from the media regarding his knee, Gurley insisted he doesn't plan on altering his playing style in 2019."No, man," he told Ruiz. "For me, I've been doing this my whole life so it would be so hard for me to even try to change my style of play. That's not even me. I don't even know how to describe my game. I'm just going to keep doing what I can do until I can't do it no more. That's why we play this sport. But I've been feeling good. I'm definitely not going to change anything. I'm going to come with that same mindset like 3rd-and-1, 4th-and-1, I'm gonna try to go get it."So I'm just excited. I know it's always been a lot of talk going on this whole offseason, so it's just like, hey, it's the offseason. That's what everything is supposed to be about: speculation and reporting. Once the season comes, you gonna see what happens."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Houston Texans aren't expected to reach an agreement with Jadeveon Clowney before the July 15 deadline to sign franchise-tagged players to long-term contracts, sources told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.Clowney is reportedly expected to skip a significant portion of training camp, but he won't miss any regular-season games. The edge defender can't be fined for missing mandatory activities until he signs his franchise tender, which will cover the 2019 season and pay him $15.9 million.Throughout the offseason, there have been no signs that the Texans and Clowney are making progress in contract talks.Former Houston general manager Brian Gaine - who was shockingly fired after one season in June - and head coach Bill O'Brien disagreed on whether the team should sign Clowney long term, a source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. With Gaine gone and O'Brien helping to cover the GM duties this season, it appears the team will follow the head coach's preferred path with the former No. 1 overall pick.Clowney, 26, is coming off his third straight Pro Bowl campaign. He notched 47 tackles and nine sacks in 15 contests last year.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Warning: Story contains sensitive contentAn extended audio recording of a conversation between Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill and his fiancee, Crystal Espinal, regarding their 3-year-old son was broadcast on radio station 610 KCSP on Tuesday. Most of the 11-minute argument, which was recorded in a Dubai airport earlier this year, was broadcast by KCTV5 in April. KCSP aired the segments that weren't initially released. In the new recording, the wideout appears to deny the 2014 assault of Espinal that he pleaded guilty to prior to entering the NFL. He avoided jail time and instead agreed to a deferred three-year sentence."... You ruined my life and you lied on me in 2014, bro," Hill is heard saying on the recording in reference to the 2014 incident, per Yahoo Sports' Terez Paylor. "And if you want to rewind that night we can rewind that night too, (expletive)."You was in my house. And did I pick you up and slam you? Hell no, I picked you up and put you out my door and after that you left. And on my son, you did that, bro. And then you get in the courtroom, you want to sit up there and cry on the stand. 'He hit me, he hit me.' Man, come on bro."Espinal then asked Hill multiple times how she got bruises. Hill did not directly respond to the question. Instead, he asked Espinal repeatedly, "Did I hit you?" Espinal didn't directly answer. She then moved the conversation to the child's injury, a part of the conversation that was previously played by KCTV5.Espinal repeatedly accused Hill of breaking their son's arm. The receiver denied hurting the child."My life is supposed to be a whole lot easier right now … 2014 wasn’t supposed to happen. None of that (expletive). But I broke my son's arm? Come on, let's be real, bro."You know how I am with kids," Hill added. "You know how I am with (our son). I'm very hard on him but I would never hurt my son in life."Toward the end of the recording, Hill rejects Espinsal's accusation that their son is terrified of him, insisting that the child respects him.The NFL and the Chiefs have heard the entire audio recording, sources told Taylor. In March, officers were called to Hill and Espinal's home, and the police report listed a juvenile as the alleged victim.Johnson County District Attorney Stephen Howe announced on April 24 that he wouldn't be filing charges against Hill and Espinal. He said he believed a crime occurred but that there wasn't evidence to conclusively prove who committed it.A day later, KCTV5 broadcasted the audio recording. The Chiefs then told Hill to stay away from all team activities.Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated in April that the criminal case had been reopened, but prosecutors confirmed in June that the investigation was in fact no longer active.Hill and Espinal are, however, still part of an ongoing case with the Kansas Department for Children and Families. The wideout could still be subject to a suspension under the NFL's personal conduct policy. Hill recently met with league investigators for eight hours but there is no timetable for a ruling. The Chiefs are reportedly hopeful that a decision will be made before the start of training camp, which opens July 26.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
