Suspended Irving says on Instagram he quits NFL
Warning: Story and video contain coarse languageDavid Irving would rather quit the NFL than face another suspension. The Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman and impending free agent took to Instagram Live on Thursday night to share some news with his fans after the NFL handed him an indefinite suspension last week for violating its substance abuse policy."Basically, guys, I quit. I know they're talking about a suspension and all this other nonsense. I'm out of there. I'm not doing this shit no more," Irving said, blunt in hand.Irving has been suspended three times in his four-year career. Previous bans also stemmed from violations of the league's drug policy. In his video, he referred to marijuana as a medicine and argued for its place in the game."We got this opioid thing going on and I'm prescribed all that bullshit, and I just think it's bullshit that we've got to deal with that policy," he said. "Everyone thinks it's about smoking weed. It's not about smoking weed."It's much bigger than that. Much, much bigger. Hell, I have concussions every day. I get to see around the office how that f---s your head up and I feel it."He added: "Blunts over pills."The 25-year-old said he still loves football and wouldn't be where he is without it."However, I don't love the NFL. The NFL is not football," he said."I'm not about to be told what to do. Especially because it's not really what it seems."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Redskins, Titans, Saints out of running for Antonio Brown
More teams are dropping out of the Antonio Brown sweepstakes. The Washington Redskins, Tennessee Titans, and New Orleans Saints are all out of the running for the Pittsburgh Steelers' All-Pro receiver, reports ESPN's Dianna Russini. The list of teams rumored to be no longer interested in acquiring Brown also includes the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and San Francisco 49ers.NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that three other teams had joined the bidding for Brown's services. It was also reported Wednesday that the Steelers were asking interested parties for their final offers and intend to have a deal in place by Friday.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Fantasy: Ideal landing spots for top WR, TE free agents
What makes free agency so exciting? It's the promise of greatness that lies in every player hitting the open market.A new team generates hope that a star player can be the missing piece vaulting it into Super Bowl contention, that a backup can finally get the volume they deserve, or a third-stringer can find a coaching staff capable of maximizing their talents.Oftentimes, the grass can quite literally be greener thanks to a new contract, and while we know not every free-agent journey ends in triumph, anything is possible a week before the new league year kicks off.So with that inspiration, this article isn't setting out to predict where free agents will sign, but instead where they would ideally end up if fantasy value was the most important factor in their decision.Ideal landing spots
Report: Broncos agree to trade Keenum to Redskins
The Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins have agreed to terms on a trade that sends quarterback Case Keenum to D.C., NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, citing sources. The Broncos are expected to receive the Redskins' sixth-round draft pick, while Washington gets Keenum and a Denver seventh-round pick in exchange, sources told Rapoport. After the Broncos reached an agreement with the Baltimore Ravens to trade for quarterback Joe Flacco in February, Keenum's tenure in the Rockies seemed destined to end soon. The Redskins were apparently also interested in acquiring Flacco. If both sides agree to a deal, Washington would be Keenum's fourth team in as many seasons. He signed a two-year contract with Denver after a miracle run with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017.His 2018 was a disappointment. He threw 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and led to the Broncos to a 6-10 finish with losses in their final four games.Keenum was originally due $18 million for the 2019 season. As part of a reworked contract, the Redskins and Broncos will reportedly each pay him $3.5 million and he'll earn a $500,000 bonus, a source told Mike Klis of 9News.Washington has an obvious need at quarterback after Alex Smith, Colt McCoy, and Mark Sanchez were felled by injuries in 2018. Smith isn't expected to play next season after he suffered a broken tibia and fibula in November. If completed, the Flacco and Keenum trades would impact the landing spots for the quarterbacks in April's draft.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Steelers extend Pouncey, reportedly make him highest-paid center
The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a three-year extension with Maurkice Pouncey, the team announced Thursday. The deal is worth $29 million in base salary, a source told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. But ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Pouncey's contract could pay him an average of $11 million a year, making him the NFL's highest-paid center.Pittsburgh also signed guard Ramon Foster, slated to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13, to a two-year deal. His new contract is worth $8.25 million, Dulac reports, citing a source.Pouncey, a first-round pick of the Steelers in 2010, has been selected to the Pro Bowl seven times during his eight-year career.Pittsburgh's offensive line gave up just 24 sacks last season, the fourth-fewest in the NFL.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Bears approached by teams about Howard trade
The Chicago Bears were approached by multiple teams during the combine about a potential trade for running back Jordan Howard, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Trade discussions are still ongoing, Schefter added. The 24-year-old had his role reduced in first-year head coach Matt Nagy's offense last season, as the Bears relied more heavily on the dynamic Tarik Cohen.Howard carried the ball 26 fewer times in 2018 compared to the previous season, and he continued to see limited work in the passing game.Chicago drafted Howard in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The running back had 250 carries, 935 rushing yards, and nine touchdowns during the 2018 campaign. He surpassed 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons with the Bears.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Dolphins shopping Quinn one year after acquiring him
The Miami Dolphins are shopping pass-rusher Robert Quinn a year after parting with a fourth-round pick to acquire him, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Quinn, who turns 29 in May, could be released if Miami doesn't find a trade partner. The two-time Pro Bowler recorded 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles for the Dolphins in 2018, a team widely expected to begin rebuilding. The former North Carolina star spent the first seven seasons of his career with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. He's due to make nearly $13 million next season during the final year of his deal, but none of that money is guaranteed.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Every team's biggest need entering free agency
theScore goes division by division to identify the biggest need for all 32 NFL teams entering free agency, which opens March 13 at 4 p.m. ETAFC WestDenver BroncosBiggest need: Defensive lineIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyVon Miller is a one-man wrecking crew, but he shouldn't always be required to be, especially as he approaches his 30th birthday. With Denver still potentially set to use its first-round pick on a quarterback after acquiring Joe Flacco, John Elway should spend big to fix the interior of the defensive line to free up Miller and running mate Bradley Chubb.Top potential FA targets: Ndamukong Suh, Sheldon RichardsonKansas City Chiefs Biggest need: SecondaryKansas City can go touchdown-for-touchdown with any offense in the league, but even Patrick Mahomes can't continue to overcome his team's woeful defensive backfield, which allowed the second-most yards through the air in 2018. Adding a playmaking cornerback or safety in free agency would give the Chiefs the counter-punch they need to complement their explosive offense.Top potential FA targets: Earl Thomas, Ronald DarbyLos Angeles ChargersBiggest need: Defensive tackleThe Chargers' roster is one of the most well-rounded in the NFL, but there's a glaring hole right in the center of the defense. Corey Liuget's option was declined, meaning he will test the open market along with three other defensive tackles from 2018. Los Angeles has to add multiple bodies up front, and while the draft is deep at the position, experienced veterans are needed to help end Philip Rivers' long wait for a ring.Top potential FA targets: Ndamukong Suh, Sheldon RichardsonOakland RaidersBiggest need: Front sevenThe Raiders could overhaul nearly every position on their roster (which is what Jon Gruden appears to be doing) and few would argue against it. But the talent on defense is particularly bad. The secondary has several exciting pieces, such as Gareon Conley and Karl Joseph, but the defensive line and linebacking corps both need a serious infusion of playmakers if Gruden is to return to winning ways in 2019.Top potential FA targets: C.J. Mosley, Trey Flowers, Muhammad WilkersonNFC WestArizona CardinalsMichael Zagaris / Getty Images Sport / GettyBiggest need: Offensive lineWhether it's Josh Rosen or Kyler Murray under center for the Cardinals, priority No. 1 must be improving the offensive line after Arizona trotted out 11 different linemen in 2018. Even middling offensive linemen command significant deals in free agency due to a lack of options (see Nate Solder), but Arizona can't get cheap when it comes to protecting its franchise player and should target free agency's top pass-protectors.Top potential FA targets: Trent Brown, Matt ParadisLos Angeles RamsBiggest need: Pass-rusherThe Rams tried to fix their lack of pass rush by acquiring Dante Fowler Jr. at last season's trade deadline, but their inability to get edge pressure was still evident in the postseason. While paying a big name is out of the question after Aaron Donald's monster deal, veterans could be convinced to sign an affordable short-term deal to play on a Super Bowl contender.Top potential FA targets: Cameron Wake, Ezekiel AnsahSan Francisco 49ersBiggest need: Free safetyThe 49ers desperately need to boost their pass rush after tying for 22nd in sacks last season, but adding edge rushers isn't the only way to fix the issue. Coordinator Robert Saleh's single-high Cover 3 defense requires a rangy free safety to patrol the deep middle of the field to make it effective, which is why reuniting Earl Thomas with fellow former Legion of Boom member Richard Sherman makes so much sense. He won't come cheap, however, so San Francisco would be smart to identify a Plan B.Top potential FA targets: Earl Thomas, Lamarcus Joyner, George IlokaSeattle SeahawksBiggest need: Pass-rusherThe Seahawks used the franchise tag on Frank Clark after he emerged as the team's best sack artist in 2018 with 13 QB takedowns. But Clark needs backup. While defensive tackle Jarran Reed made a big leap as a pass-rusher, racking up 10.5 sacks, Seattle needs more edge talent if it's to terrorize opposing passers as it did in the days of Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, and Co. The leading pass-rushers will command huge contracts, so Seattle should target the second tier of available defensive ends.Top potential FA targets: Ezekiel Ansah, Dante Fowler Jr., Cameron WakeAFC EastBuffalo BillsMaddie Meyer / Getty Images Sport / GettyBiggest need: Wide receiverJosh Allen was one of the league's worst passers during his first season in the NFL; only fellow rookie Josh Rosen had a lower QB rating. But Allen's struggles are understandable given his supporting cast of offensive linemen and receivers. Allen's athleticism mitigates his line's issues to an extent, so Buffalo should focus on finding its young pivot pass-catchers who can either stretch the field or excel after the catch to play alongside promising second-year wideout Robert Foster.Top potential FA targets: Golden Tate, John Brown, Adam Humphries, Mike WallaceMiami DolphinsBiggest need: QuarterbackRyan Tannehill is reportedly done in Miami after seven years. The Dolphins now need to find their latest "next Dan Marino," but as they sit at No. 13 overall in the draft, it'll be hard to land Dwayne Haskins or Kyler Murray without moving up. A stop-gap option is therefore needed, and outside of making a shock trade for a quarterback like Jacoby Brissett, Miami will need to land one of the two potential starters on the free-agent market.Top potential FA targets: Nick Foles, Teddy BridgewaterNew England PatriotsBiggest need: Pass-catchersJosh Gordon might be done with football (again), Rob Gronkowski is widely expected to retire, and Julian Edelman turns 33 in May. Tom Brady desperately needs some new weapons. The Patriots rarely shell out big bucks in free agency, so the likes of Golden Tate and Tyrell Williams aren't realistic. Expect New England to target reclamation projects that it can squeeze every ounce of production from.Top potential FA targets: Demaryius Thomas, Cole Beasley, Devin Funchess, Tyler EifertNew York JetsBiggest need: Running backSam Darnold looked every bit a franchise passer down the stretch last season. However, handing him the keys to the offense risks putting too much on his shoulders too soon. A dynamic ground game is always a young passer's best friend. With Isaiah Crowell likely to be shown the door, there's no doubt the Jets must find a new starter. The only question is: how much are they willing to spend?Top potential FA targets: Le'Veon Bell, Tevin Coleman, Mark IngramNFC EastDallas CowboysIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyBiggest need: Defensive lineThe Cowboys had little choice but to franchise-tag star pass-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence for a second consecutive season. Just days prior, they lost both Randy Gregory and David Irving to indefinite suspensions. The pair combined for seven sacks in 2018, and though they accounted for just one start between them, their absences for 2019 will affect the depth on the defensive line.Top potential FA targets: Ndamukong Suh, Domata Peko, Shane RayNew York GiantsBiggest need: SecondaryIf the Giants bring in a quarterback to challenge - or perhaps replace - Eli Manning, it'll be through the draft. Free agency should be all about defense for New York. With Landon Collins avoiding the franchise tag and cornerback Janoris Jenkins potentially being a cap casualty, a revamp of the entire secondary could be in the cards.Top potential FA targets: Ronald Darby, Tre Boston, Bradley RobyPhiladelphia EaglesBiggest need: Running backThe Eagles' current group of running backs - Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement, Josh Adams, and Boston Scott - is full of useful role players but lacks a standout option to rely on with Jay Ajayi hitting free agency. Re-signing the oft-injured veteran to a prove-it deal is an option, but the Eagles likely won't want injuries to severely hamper their run game again. A home-run threat like Tevin Coleman could help Philly's offense return to the level of its 2017 Super Bowl run.Top potential FA targets: Le'Veon Bell, Tevin Coleman, Jay AjayiWashington RedskinsBiggest need: QuarterbackAlex Smith reportedly won't play in 2019 after a devastating leg injury, but his $20.4-million cap hit isn't going anywhere. Josh Johnson and Colt McCoy are, at best, mediocre backups, and the former is a free agent. While the Redskins are likely to draft a first-round quarterback, they did also show interest in trading for Joe Flacco. There are several big names on the market, but Washington doesn't have a ton of cap space; a free-agent bidding war could end its chances of landing a veteran pivot.Top potential FA targets: Teddy Bridgewater, Nick Foles, Tyrod TaylorAFC NorthBaltimore RavensPatrick Smith / Getty Images Sport / GettyBiggest need: Wide receiverLamar Jackson's passing remains a work in progress. If he's to make improvements in that part of his game, the Ravens will have to supply him with a replenished stable of receivers. With John Brown set to hit free agency, Jackson's top targets are Willie Snead and two tight ends from the 2018 draft.Top potential FA targets: Tyrell Williams, Golden Tate, Devin FunchessCleveland BrownsBiggest need: Defensive tackleNow that Greg Robinson has been retained, the Browns should turn their attention to the interior of the defensive line. The position is barren behind former third-round pick Larry Ogunjobi, who impressed with 5.5 sacks in 2018. Cleveland has the cap space to target the best defensive tackles available.Top potential FA targets: Timmy Jernigan, Ndamukong Suh, Sheldon RichardsonCincinnati BengalsBiggest need: LinebackerNew defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo's first inclination would likely have been to address the Bengals' secondary, considering his background as a DBs coach. However, the more pressing need is to restock the linebacker corps, one that sees Preston Brown and Vincent Rey headed to free agency and veteran Vontaze Burfict a candidate to be cut.Top potential FA targets: KJ Wright, Kwon Alexander, Anthony BarrPittsburgh SteelersBiggest need: CornerbackLe'Veon Bell is gone and Antonio Brown is headed out the door behind him. The natural reflex is to find replacements for those marquee talents. The sensible move would be to find a No. 2 corner to play opposite Joe Haden.Top potential FA targets: Morris Claiborne, Ronald Darby, Bryce CallahanNFC NorthChicago BearsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyBiggest need: KickerThe Bears are in an enviable position. They own a roster so stocked with talent that their biggest need is one that doesn't have to be addressed through the draft. Chicago is set to cut ties with Cody Parkey. Luckily, a couple of veteran replacements are available on the free-agent market.Top potential FA targets: Stephen Gostkowski, Jason MyersDetroit LionsBiggest need: Pass-catchersNot long ago, Detroit was thought to have one of the stronger receiving corps in the league. Golden Tate has since been traded and TJ Jones joins tight ends Luke Willson and Levine Toilolo in free agency. And it must have hurt to see Eric Ebron flourish in Indianapolis. If Matthew Stafford and the Lions are to turn things around, they'll need more offensive weapons.Top potential FA targets: Jamison Crowder, Jared Cook, Devin FunchessGreen Bay PackersBiggest need: Edge rusherClay Matthews, Jake Ryan, and Muhammad Wilkerson are all set to become free agents. With or without that triumvirate, the Packers need a pass rush that will help take pressure off of their young, developing corners. Luckily for Green Bay, the draft is ripe with future star defensive linemen. Unfortunately for the Pack, they own the No. 12 pick and could miss out. At least there's free agency.Top potential FA targets: Trey Flowers, Dante Fowler Jr., Ezekiel AnsahMinnesota VikingsBiggest need: Offensive lineThe Vikings' biggest area of need isn't up for debate. From tackle to guard, Minnesota needs better play along the entire offensive line. If they're to make the most out of their $84-million investment in Kirk Cousins, the Vikings must protect him and allow him more time to throw. They have little cap space to play with and therefore will have to get creative to find the necessary funds to plug the holes on their O-line.Top potential FA targets: Ramon Foster, Rodger Saffold, Ja'Wuan JamesAFC SouthHouston TexansIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyBiggest need: Offensive lineDeshaun Watson was sacked a league-high 62 times in 2018, and those struggles to protect the franchise quarterback cost the Texans in the wild-card game. As the home team and division champion, Houston was upset by rival Indianapolis after scoring just seven points and allowing three sacks and eight QB hits on Watson. Pass protection is the Texans' Achilles heel.Top potential FA targets: Trent Brown, Ja'Wuan James, Mitch MorseIndianapolis ColtsBiggest need: CornerbackPierre Desir impressed in his second season in Indianapolis, so the Colts should make it a priority to bring the 28-year-old back. Armed with the most cap space of any team, Indy has the capacity to re-sign Desir and target the top free agents at the position to play alongside him.Top potential FA targets: Ronald Darby, Pierre Desir, Bryce CallahanJacksonville JaguarsBiggest need: QuarterbackThe belief in Jacksonville is that the Jaguars were one competent quarterback away from reaching the Super Bowl in 2017. While they can't go back in time to rectify that situation, management is finally intent on making a change under center. Blake Bortles' time has run out as the Jaguars are reportedly the only bidder for Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles.Top potential FA targets: Nick Foles, Teddy BridgewaterTennessee TitansBiggest need: Outside linebackerBrian Orakpo's retirement and Derrick Morgan's expiring contract leave the Titans with an obvious need at outside linebacker. While the pair's production dropped off substantially in 2018, the veterans still leave glaring holes. A likely target is Za'Darius Smith, whom defensive coordinator Dean Pees knows well from his time in Baltimore.Top potential FA targets: Za'Darius Smith, Preston Smith, Aaron LynchNFC SouthAtlanta FalconsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyBiggest need: Offensive lineBoth starting left guard Andy Levitre and backup right guard Ben Garland aren't expected to return in 2019 and general manager Thomas Dimitroff has openly considered taking a guard with Atlanta's first pick in April's draft. With little cap room to play with, it's a likely scenario. The Falcons were sixth in quarterback hits allowed in 2018 and are therefore open to making improvements across the offensive line.Top potential FA targets: Mike Iupati, James Carpenter, LaAdrian WaddleCarolina PanthersBiggest need: CenterThe Panthers need help along the offensive line, but there's no bigger hole than at center after the retirement of 12-year pro Ryan Kalil. If Carolina opts to find a veteran replacement rather than start fresh through the draft, it'll likely have to pay up for the top players available at the position.Top potential FA targets: Mitch Morse, Matt Paradis, John SullivanNew Orleans SaintsBiggest need: Tight endFollowing Benjamin Watson's retirement, the Saints are thin at the tight end position with sparingly used options Josh Hill and Garrett Griffin. There was a belief that New Orleans would seek a reunion with Jimmy Graham, but the Packers expect him back in 2019. Still, there are reliable hands available on the open market that could make the third highest-scoring offense even more dangerous.Top potential FA targets: Jared Cook, Jesse JamesTampa Bay BuccaneersBiggest need: SecondaryThe Buccaneers have ranked in the bottom third in pass defense in each of the past three seasons. Though the offense has finished in the top 10 in points scored over the past two seasons, the Bucs can't seem to allow fewer points than they score. They're currently set to enter 2019 with one of the youngest secondaries in football, headlined by Vernon Hargreaves, Carlton Davis, and Justin Evans. Tampa needs back-end help in the worst way.Top potential FA targets: Tyrann Mathieu, Glover Quin, Bradley RobyCopyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Finding the perfect free agent for all 32 NFL teams
With NFL free agency set to open March 13, every team will be searching for veteran additions to help take them to the next level. Below, we match each team with their ideal free-agent fit:Arizona Cardinals: C.J. Mosley, LBMosley will likely garner a great deal of interest on the open market and Arizona has the cap space to offer a rich contract. The team recently released Josh Bynes, and Deone Bucannon is an impending free agent. We love Mosley's fit in Vance Joseph's defense.Atlanta Falcons: Morris Claiborne, CBThe Falcons have to do something about that gaping hole in the secondary opposite Desmond Trufant. Claiborne's size and length fit the profile of what Atlanta looks for in corners and he should come at a reasonable price.Baltimore Ravens: Matt Paradis, CThe new-look Ravens are expected to shift to a run-heavy offense and Paradis excels in space. John Harbaugh and Co. will look to keep Lamar Jackson in one piece moving forward.Buffalo Bills: John Brown, WRThe Bills tried to sign Brown a year ago but lost his services to the Ravens. The speedy receiver compliments the skill set of strong-armed quarterback Josh Allen.Carolina Panthers: Ramon Foster, OGThe Panthers labeled their offensive line a top priority after the season. At 33, Foster isn't a long-term piece, but he'll help clear the pocket for Cam Newton in the short term.Chicago Bears: Stephen Gostkowski, KWith few pressing needs, the Bears would be an ideal fit for one of the top free-agent kickers on the market. After the way last season ended, the team could use a veteran who won't crumble under pressure.Cincinnati Bengals: Malcom Brown, DTA first-round pick of the Patriots in 2015, Brown is an ideal space-eater along the interior defensive line, freeing up space for Geno Atkins and Carl Lawson to wreak havoc.Cleveland Browns: Bryce Callahan, CBAfter a strong season covering the slot, Callahan is expected to receive a sweet deal in free agency. Cleveland has a need at the position and cap space to spend.Dallas Cowboys: Earl Thomas, SIt's no secret Thomas wants to play for his hometown team. The Cowboys boast a strong defense but have room for improvement at safety.Denver Broncos: Adrian Amos, SNew coaches typically bring along a former player to help implement their system, making Amos a logical target for Denver and Vic Fangio. The Broncos need safety help anyways.Detroit Lions: Randall Cobb, WRThe Lions are set with Marvin Jones Jr. and Kenny Golladay out wide, but Matthew Stafford's play declined following the Golden Tate trade. Cobb offers an intriguing slot weapon with minimal risk.Green Bay Packers: Jamison Crowder, WRAside from Davante Adams, the Packers got nothing out their receivers last season. The impending departure of Randall Cobb, who struggled with injuries last year, gives Green Bay a hole in the slot.Houston Texans: Ronald Darby, CBThe Texans are in the market for corners and Darby is the top one available, even with the uncertainty around his health; the former Eagle tore his ACL in Week 10.Indianapolis Colts: Golden Tate, WRAn established receiver to pair with T.Y. Hilton could take the Colts' offense to the next level. Tate's game compliments Hilton's perfectly.Jacksonville Jaguars: Jared Cook, TEA few roster moves would give the Jaguars the cap room they need to bring in Cook, the top tight end available. Jacksonville hasn't had a 500-yard tight end since 2012.Kansas City Chiefs: Ezekiel Ansah, DEThe Chiefs could be on the prowl for two new pass-rushers after switching to a 4-3 defensive scheme. Ansah fits the bill and may settle for a short-term contract following an injury-riddled campaign in Detroit.Los Angeles Chargers: K.J. Wright, LBWright reuniting with former defensive coordinator Gus Bradley would be a dream scenario for both parties, as the Chargers could certainly upgrade the linebacker position.Los Angeles Rams: Clay Matthews, LBIf he embraces a new role, Matthews could help the Rams as a situational pass-rusher. Los Angeles probably won't be able to re-sign Dante Fowler and will have to get creative in free agency given its financial constraints.Miami Dolphins: Dante Fowler, DERobert Quinn could be a cap casualty this offseason and Cameron Wake is set to hit the open market. With an eye towards the future, Fowler makes sense as a potential long-term piece for the Dolphins' defense.Minnesota Vikings: Thomas Davis, LBThe Vikings are likely to lose Anthony Barr at linebacker and don't have the cap space to make a blockbuster move. Davis, 35, remained effective last season for the Panthers, who wisely limited his snaps.New England Patriots: Tyrell Williams, WRJulian Edelman, who turns 33 in May, and Braxton Berrios are the only Patriots receivers under contract in 2019. Williams would be a solid addition from the Chargers.New Orleans Saints: Devin Funchess, WRThe 6-foot-4 Funchess would be a nice under-the-radar pickup for the Saints; they're thin at receiver beyond Michael Thomas and don't have much cap space to work with.New York Giants: Daryl Williams, OTTwo putrid seasons of Chad Wheeler at right tackle should motivate the Giants to find his replacement, and the steady Williams would be a nice one.New York Jets: Le'Veon Bell, RBThe Jets positioned themselves to be able to spend big in 2019 and have been linked to Bell for over a year. New York must surround quarterback Sam Darnold with playmakers.Oakland Raiders: Trey Flowers, DENo team needs pass-rushing help as much as the Raiders, who boast the cap space and draft capital to turn the direction of the franchise in 2019 before relocating to Las Vegas.Philadelphia Eagles: Mark Ingram, RBPhiladelphia's offense wasn't nearly as efficient after losing Jay Ajayi to a knee injury. With no other glaring needs to address, the Eagles can afford to spend a bit on a veteran running back.Pittsburgh Steelers: Jordan Hicks, LBThe Steelers desperately need a linebacker who can cover, so Hicks is an ideal match. Pittsburgh rarely splurges in free agency and the 26-year-old could be signed for cheap after an injury-riddled career thus far.San Francisco 49ers: Adam Humphries, WRIf Jimmy Garoppolo is intent on throwing inside the numbers, the Niners better get him a receiver who can thrive in the slot and become a long-term offensive fixture.Seattle Seahawks: Timmy Jernigan, DTJernigan was a force inside for the Eagles in 2017 but played only three games last year because of injury. Philadelphia released him one year after he signed a four-year, $48-million extension.Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Tyrann Mathieu, SNew Bucs coach Bruce Arians sang Mathieu's praises non-stop when they were together in Arizona. Mathieu would boost a Tampa Bay defense that gave up a whopping 29 points per game last season.Tennessee Titans: Za'Darius Smith, LBThe up-and-coming Smith would bolster a Tennessee pass rush that was too inconsistent last year. Titans defensive coordinator Dean Pees is familiar with Smith from his time in Baltimore.Washington Redskins: Landon Collins, SWashington has been uncharacteristically quiet in free agency over the past two years. It's hard to believe it'll resist the temptation to throw money at a Pro Bowler from the division rival Giants.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. He was entering the last year of his contract.Stewart accumulated 60 tackles, two interceptions, and one sack in 2018. He'll join a number of starting-caliber safeties on the open market.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Lincoln Riley: Despite reports, Murray had great interviews at combine
Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley disputes NFL Network analyst Charley Casserly's claim that Kyler Murray interviewed poorly with teams at the combine."I've personally spoken with the majority of teams that he met with (at the combine) and everyone was glowing about their conversations with Kyler," Riley said on the "Dan Patrick Show" on Wednesday. "Basically the complete opposite of what Charley said."Despite not participating in drills, Murray still dominated headlines throughout the combine, which concluded Monday. He measured in at 5-foot-10 and 207 pounds - taller than many believed.Casserly, however, maintains there was more to Murray's combine visit than just his measurements as the former Washington Redskins general manager received poor feedback on the Oklahoma product."These were the worst comments I ever got on a high-rated quarterback, and I've been doing this a long time," Casserly said Tuesday.Casserly added: "Leadership - not good. Study habits - not good. The board work - below not good. Not good at all in any of those areas, raising major concerns about what this guy is going to do."Riley denied the assessment that the quarterback lacks leadership skills."Kyler was a tremendous leader for us," Riley said. "... All he cares about is winning. I think our team took on his personality."Murray's agent, Erik Burkhardt, also countered Casserly's report Wednesday."My initial reaction was to laugh because I knew the 'old guard' would inevitably try to come up with the usual pre-draft nonsense," Burkhardt told Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "But when I later watched this man say what he did, it was over the top and definitely felt personal, and that's when I got pissed off."Burkhardt added, "First and foremost, Kyler is an exemplary person. He is everything you hope your own son grows up to become. We're talking about a young man who has done everything right and worked relentlessly his entire life to achieve and push for greatness. We're talking about the first human ever drafted in the top 10 in two major sports leagues, and who just completed the greatest single season in football history. You will not find even one former teammate or coach at any level in any sport who's played with Kyler Murray who has anything remotely negative to say about him, his leadership, or his work ethic."The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly targeting Murray with the No. 1 pick. He's also apparently drawing interest from the Oakland Raiders, who hold the fourth overall pick.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Teams eyeing Rosen trade; Cardinals yet to shop QB
It appears teams are buying into the rumors connecting the Arizona Cardinals to quarterback prospect Kyler Murray.Multiple clubs inquired about Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen's availability at the NFL combine last week, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter, though Arizona failed to indicate its willingness to move on from the signal-caller.A Rosen trade could still occur, Schefter adds, but the team has yet to entertain offers.Cardinals general manager Steve Keim didn't slam the door on rumors surrounding his team selecting a quarterback with the first overall pick in the 2019 draft, calling Rosen the quarterback "right now."Keim's comments added fuel to the fire, as multiple reports surfaced at the combine that Arizona was interested with pairing Murray with new head coach Kliff Kingsbury.Rosen was selected No. 10 overall in last year's draft but mostly struggled during his rookie campaign.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Conversation with LeBron led Nike co-founder to approve Kaepernick ad
Nike experienced "record engagement" after making Colin Kaepernick the face of its "Just Do It" 30th anniversary campaign, but according to co-founder Phil Knight, there was some hesitation to run the ad at first.Speaking at the Stanford Graduate School of Business last month, Knight recalled the first time Nike's advertisement department showed the ad to him and CEO Mark Parker."Parker looked at it and went, 'Gulp,'" Knight said, according to Bill Snyder of Fast Company. "And they said, 'Well, here's the deal. If we're going to get this in time for the campaign, you've got 24 hours.'"Knight ultimately gave his approval, in part because of a conversation he had with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James weeks earlier in which he expressed concern over his grandsons getting their driver's licenses. James told Knight he was also worried about his son starting to drive, fearing he may get shot by a police officer."I thought of the top 100 worries I have, and that doesn't make my list. That was a real eye-opener," Knight said.James has been vocal in his support of Kaepernick, telling reporters at NBA All-Star Weekend he hopes the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback received "a hell of a lot of money" from his settlement with the NFL.As for the negative reaction to the Kaepernick ad, Knight said he isn't bothered by it: "You can't try and go down the middle of the road. You have to take a stand on something, which is ultimately I think why the Kaepernick ad worked."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Chargers working to retain Perryman
The Los Angeles Chargers are working on reaching a deal to retain linebacker Denzel Perryman before he hits free agency, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Perryman played in nine games in 2018, registering 51 tackles and an interception before sustaining a season-ending LCL injury on Nov. 11. He was given a three-to-four-month recovery timeline.Free agency opens on March 13.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Browns release Collins after reportedly failing to land trade
The Cleveland Browns cut linebacker Jamie Collins on Wednesday, the team announced.Cleveland attempted to trade Collins but couldn't find any takers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports."We want to thank Jamie for his contributions to the Cleveland Browns," general manager John Dorsey said in a statement. "These types of decisions are never easy. Jamie is a respected veteran player in this league and we wish him the best as he continues his career."The Browns saved $9.25 million in cap space after parting ways with the defender, according to NFL.com's Tom Pelissero.Cleveland acquired Collins from the New England Patriots during the 2016 season for a 2017 third-round draft pick. The 29-year-old had 104 total tackles, four sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble in 2018.Collins took to Twitter to wish Cleveland farewell.
Carr: Raiders would welcome Brown 'arms wide open'
Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has heard the rumors linking his team to Antonio Brown.Speaking at a charity event on Saturday, Carr said the Raiders would welcome the addition of the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver."I hope he's in play. It would be great to add a guy like that to your team, talent like that," Carr said, according to Anthony Galaviz of the Fresno Bee."If it works out in the business side, I know the locker room will be arms wide open to accepting Antonio."The Steelers are said to be seeking a first-round draft pick for Brown, something the Raiders have in spades. Oakland has three Day 1 selections in this year's draft and an abundance of cap space to incorporate Brown's contract.Carr also admitted that Oakland has the need for an All-Pro."We need more talent," he said. "We need some help, but at the same time, we want good people. When things are tough in training camp; when things are tough in season; when it's good, you don't want guys hitting too high or too low or depressed. It's just draining for everybody. One of the most important traits is they have to love football. There's a lot of people out there who don't love football, and I don't want anything to do with those guys."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Brown trade expected by Friday; Jets, Cardinals out of mix
Things are moving quickly in the Antonio Brown sweepstakes as a deal for the All-Pro wide receiver is expected to be in place by Friday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Pittsburgh Steelers are now asking potential trade partners for their best offers, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, as Brown is due a $2.5-million roster bonus by March 17.Three new teams have entered the fray within the last 48 hours, while the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals are no longer pursuing Brown, Rapoport adds.It was previously reported that the Denver Broncos have no interest in Brown and, as of Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers had not spoken to the Steelers about a trade. The Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans, and Washington Redskins were previously identified as interested parties. The Steelers are looking to accommodate Brown's trade request but have said they will only do so if they net reasonable compensation.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cowboys not interested in top FA safeties Thomas, Collins
The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a safety this offseason but appear unwilling to splurge.Dallas has no interest in signing impending free agents Earl Thomas and Landon Collins because the price would be too steep, a source told The Athletic's Calvin Watkins.Eric Weddle, who was reportedly released by the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday, isn't on the Cowboys' radar either, Watkins adds.Thomas' hometown team has long been considered a logical suitor for his services. The former first-round pick first made waves on this front back in 2017, when he ran to the Cowboys' locker room after a game and told head coach Jason Garrett, "If you have a chance to get me, come get me."Thomas' representatives reportedly met with members of the Cowboys organization at the NFL combine.Collins will join Thomas on the open market after the New York Giants recently informed the hard-hitting defender he will not be franchise tagged. Both safeties are expected to land lucrative contracts in free agency, and the Cowboys appear to be prioritizing long-term extensions for Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, and Amari Cooper, among others.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL's top 100 free agents of 2019
With the NFL's franchise tag deadline in the past, attention moves to the opening of the league's free-agent negotiating window on March 11 at 4 p.m. ET.These are the 100 best players slated to hit the market:1. Le'Veon Bell, RBThough Bell's abilities are unquestioned, the same cannot be said about the sliding value of running backs. Bell was widely regarded as the league's best all-around running back before he sat out the 2018 season. He made three Pro Bowls in five years with the Steelers.2. Earl Thomas, SA reunion with the Seahawks is unlikely for Thomas. The future Hall of Fame safety, who's long been linked to his hometown Cowboys, showed no hint of decline before fracturing his leg in Week 4.3. Trey Flowers, EDGEFlowers is one of the top run-defenders at his position, and thanks to a hot second half of the season, he established a new career high with 7.5 sacks. He's still just 25 years old.4. Landon Collins, SIt would be a mild surprise if the Giants let their three-time Pro Bowl safety walk. Collins is a tackling machine and a team leader, though he's only produced two interceptions over his last 33 games.5. C.J. Mosley, LBThe Ravens may not have the cap space to retain Mosley, who's been a model of consistency since being drafted in the first round in 2014. The four-time Pro Bowler has posted 100 tackles four times in five years.6. K.J. Wright, LBA persistent knee injury spoiled Wright's contract season, but the 29-year-old is elite when healthy.7. Ndamukong Suh, DLAt this stage of his career, Suh is better suited for a complementary role, much like the one he played for the Rams.8. Tyrann Mathieu, SThe Honey Badger won't have to settle for another one-year deal after successfully betting on himself with the Texans.9. Trent Brown, OTBrown was a postseason star for the Patriots. He's the top available tackle a year after the 49ers traded him for a mid-round draft pick.10. Lamarcus Joyner, SJoyner regressed after his breakout 2017 campaign, but he was still a sure tackler and viable starter for the Rams.11. Sheldon Richardson, DLRichardson could be ready to find a long-term home after playing for three teams over the last three years.12. Golden Tate, WRTate's the top wideout on the market, but clubs aren't typically eager to dole out wads of cash for receivers over the age of 30.13. Matt Paradis, CParadis was a standout in the Broncos' porous offensive line. The seldom-penalized center was an asset in run blocking and pass protection.14. Nick Foles, QBMagical moments on the biggest stages will net Foles an enviable contract, even if his overall numbers are closer to average than great.15. Ronald Darby, CBDarby was poised to cash in on the open market before a torn ACL in Week 10 derailed his campaign.16. Preston Smith, EDGEFour sacks aren't as inspiring as the 53 quarterback pressures Smith amassed in 2018.17. Bryce Callahan, CBOne of the top slot corners in the game should have plenty of value as the league continues to becomes more pass-heavy.18. Ezekiel Ansah, EDGEIf he's healthy and in the right system, Ansah can be a dominant pass-rushing force off the edge.19. Dante Fowler, EDGEInterested teams will have to weigh Fowler's athletic upside and relative youth against concerns about his maturity.20. Mark Ingram, RBIngram formed a dynamic duo with Alvin Kamara in New Orleans but hasn't proven he's capable of being the bell cow.21. Adrian Amos, SThough Amos was an important cog in the Bears' brilliant defense, he also benefited from the talent surrounding him.22. Rodger Saffold, GSaffold's grown into a very good guard after battling inconsistencies at tackle earlier in his career.23. Teddy Bridgewater, QBQuarterback-needy franchises should feel better about signing Bridgewater another year removed from his devastating 2016 knee injury.24. Daryl Williams, OTWilliams was steady at right tackle throughout his time with the Panthers.25. Za'Darius Smith, EDGEIn a breakout fourth season, Smith contributed 8.5 sacks to the NFL's top-ranked defense.26. Anthony Barr, LBHis deficiencies in coverage are cause for concern, but Barr excels in all other facets of the game.27. Muhammad Wilkerson, DLWilkerson's expected bounce-back season with the Packers was cut short after three games due to injury.28. Pierre Desir, CBThe major question Desir must answer is whether his standout 2018 campaign was simply a flash in the pan.29. Jared Cook, TECook's coming off a career season in which he led the Raiders in receiving with 896 yards and six touchdowns.30. Tyrell Williams, WRThe Western Oregon product boasts size and speed, though his production with the Chargers was modest.31. Eric Weddle, SDespite his age (34), Weddle can still contribute all over the field. The veteran is adept in coverage and strong in run defense.32. Kwon Alexander, LBThe 2017 Pro Bowler hits the open market at the ripe age of 24, and just four months removed from a torn ACL.33. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S"Solid but unspectacular" best describes Clinton-Dix, who was traded from the Packers to the Redskins last season.34. John Brown, WRBrown got off to a hot start with the Ravens before he turned invisible down the stretch.35. Michael Crabtree, WRTwo down seasons are worrisome for the 31-year-old, though there's a sense that he could thrive with a better quarterback.36. Demaryius Thomas, WRIt's been a rough winter for Thomas. In a span of four months, he was traded, tore his Achilles, was released by the Texans, and got arrested for vehicular assault.37. Mitch Morse, CThe former second-round pick thrives in pass protection but is a bit leaky in the running game.38. Tim Jernigan, DTJernigan became one of the best available interior defensive linemen when the Eagles elected to decline his contract option for 2019.39. Tevin Coleman, RBWhile his raw numbers are promising, Coleman's inability to break tackles could depress his ceiling if he's cast in an every-down role.40. Jamison Crowder, WRCrowder could be a real weapon in an offense that takes advantage of mismatches in the slot.41. Jordan Hicks, LBHicks became an analytics darling in 2018, but his traditional stats were nothing to write home about.42. Jason McCourty, CBMcCourty turned in a strong year - and memorable Super Bowl - after barely making the Patriots' roster out of training camp.43. Darqueze Dennard, CBDennard is a viable starter for a team in need of secondary help.44. Kareem Jackson, CBAge is the biggest factor working against Jackson, who's been solid throughout his nine-year career in Houston but turns 31 in April.45. Bradley Roby, CBWhile Roby struggled badly in 2018, he was much better the year prior and is a candidate to bounce back.46. Adam Humphries, WRA sure-handed slot receiver, Humphries set career highs in every major receiving category in 2018.47. Cole Beasley, WRThe veteran Cowboy is rumored to be seeking $20 million guaranteed on his next contract.48. Ja'Wuan James, OTThe dearth of competent tackles around the league could lead a team to significantly overpay James.49. Jay Ajayi, RBThe Eagles dearly missed Ajayi, who suffered an ACL tear in Week 5.50. Henry Anderson, DLAnderson has been solid against the run throughout his career with the Jets and Colts.51. Cameron Wake, EDGE52. Denzel Perryman, LB53. Devin Funchess, WR54. Randall Cobb, WR55. Kevin Johnson, CB56. Steven Nelson, CB57. Brandon Marshall, LB58. Cordarrelle Patterson, KR59. Tre Boston, S60. Report: Ravens cut Pro Bowl safety Weddle
The Baltimore Ravens have released Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The move saves the Ravens $7.5 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap.The safety is not expected to retire, and plans on playing in 2019, a source told Clarence Hill Jr. of the Athletic.Weddle was looking to return to Baltimore for the fourth and final year of his contract but voiced uncertainty about his future with the Ravens while attending the Pro Bowl in January.Weddle made the Pro Bowl in all three of his seasons in Baltimore. He tallied 68 tackles and one sack in 2018.The Utah product earned three Pro Bowl selections in nine campaigns with the Chargers, then of San Diego, between 2007 and 2015.Weddle joins a loaded safety market that includes stars Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, and Lamarcus Joyner.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Chiefs, Hill negotiating potential record-setting deal
The Kansas City Chiefs have begun negotiating a potential record-setting deal with receiver Tyreek Hill, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Chiefs have been working on getting their finances in order, franchise tagging linebacker Dee Ford and reportedly making pass-rusher Justin Houston available for trade.Hill broke out in 2018 with a 1,479-yard, 14-touchdown season, including a punt-return score. He was named an All-Pro at the flex position and also made his third consecutive Pro Bowl. The Chiefs led the league in total offense and points scored in 2018, with Hill and MVP Patrick Mahomes forming a nearly unstoppable connection. The 5-foot-10 speedster - widely considered the league's fastest player - is scheduled to become a free agent in 2020.The current top contract at the wide receiver position is the five-year, $90-million deal Odell Beckham Jr. signed in August.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Patriots won't tag Flowers, Brown, Gostkowski
The New England Patriots won't use the franchise tag on defensive end Trey Flowers, left tackle Trent Brown, or kicker Stephen Gostkowski, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Field Yates. All three players were considered prime candidates to be tendered. Barring contract extensions over the next week, the trio will hit free agency as three of the top available players at their respective positions.Flowers figures to attract the most interest on the open market after solidifying himself last season as one of the better edge defenders in the league. The 25-year-old posted 57 tackles and 7.5 sacks while helping New England surge to Super Bowl LIII glory.Brown, also 25, will be in demand after thriving at left tackle in his first campaign with the Patriots. The former San Francisco 49er was particularly effective in the playoffs, shutting down vaunted pass-rushers from the Los Angeles Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Rams.Gostkowksi, 35, has spent his entire career in New England, winning three Super Bowl championships. Buccaneers ink LT Smith to 3-year deal worth reported $41M
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Donovan Smith have struck a new deal that will keep the left tackle away from free agency. The Bucs re-signed Smith to a three-year deal on Tuesday, hours before the franchise tag deadline. The deal is worth a reported $41 million, with $27 million guaranteed, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports.Smith has started every game for the Buccaneers since the team made him a second-round pick in 2015."Donovan has been a valuable player and a model of durability since we drafted him four years ago," general manager Jason Licht said in a statement. "We always aim to develop our players and reward them for their productivity and reliability, so keeping Donovan as a Buccaneer was a major priority for us this offseason."The ironman has struggled with sacks and penalties, however, allowing 5.5 sacks and getting whistled for six penalties in 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Giants inform Collins he won't be tagged
The New York Giants informed safety Landon Collins ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline that he will not be franchise tagged, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. If tagged, the 2016 All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler would have been paid $11.1 million this season.Collins will now hit the free-agent market along with other notable safeties Earl Thomas and Tyrann Mathieu. After averaging 113 tackles per season over his first three years, Collins racked up 96 tackles in 12 games with one forced fumble and zero interceptions in 2018.Collins thanked the Giants on Twitter and declared he's "on to the next chapter."
Quinnen Williams ate Oreos for breakfast before combine
Former Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams ran the fastest 40-yard dash among 300-pounders at this year's NFL Scouting Combine, posting an official time of 4.83 on his second attempt. He also may have earned himself an endorsement deal with Oreo in the process.Williams told Vic Tafur of the Athletic that he skipped breakfast Sunday morning but was hungry on his way to Lucas Oil Stadium, so he downed four Double Stuf Oreos."No, I wasn't nervous at all, I was just ready to go," he said. "I just needed a little snack on the way."Williams spoke more about his love of Oreos at a combine press conference, admitting he eats them "almost every day."
Winners and losers from the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine
The 2019 NFL Scouting Combine is officially in the books, thus kicking the offseason and draft cycle into high gear. Here are the winners and losers from the week-long event that wasn't exactly short on storylines.Winner: Kyler MurrayNever has a single measurement captivated so many eyes. Murray's 5-foot-10, 207-pound weigh-in was an overwhelming success for the quarterback, as many questioned whether he would surpass 5-foot-9. Further helping his cause, rumors continue to swirl regarding the Arizona Cardinals' interest in selecting the Heisman Trophy winner at No. 1 overall. The talented passer's journey from MLB draft pick to potential top choice in the NFL is unlike anything we've seen before.Amazingly, Murray didn't even need to participate in combine drills to be declared a winner. His top-tier counterparts - Dwayne Haskins, Drew Lock, and Daniel Jones - failed to shine, perhaps securing the former Oklahoma pivot's spot as the first quarterback off the board.Loser: Antonio BrownBrown is about to get his wish, as a trade away from the Pittsburgh Steelers seems a near certainty, and he will likely be dealt before his $2.5-million bonus hits on March 17. But his efforts to force a move may have actually tanked his market.Reports coming out of the combine suggest the group of teams in the mix for Brown (Raiders, Redskins, Titans, Broncos, Cardinals) is lacking a legitimate contender. If Brown doesn't care where he gets traded, fine. Mission accomplished. But it's fair to wonder whether he might have drawn interest from a Super Bowl contender had he not said some of the things he did, both about the Steelers and about not needing to play football. He's 31, so there's a risk of a looming decline, but he's also still, conservatively, one of the NFL's top five receivers. Teams looking to capitalize on a championship window will pay up for that kind of talent, but are less likely to do so when there are other risks to consider. Brown might have provided, or amplified, those concerns.Winner: CardinalsNorm Hall / Getty Images Sport / GettyPerhaps the top story out of the combine was the aforementioned rumors that the Cardinals will make Murray the No. 1 pick in April. If that's the case, they would then likely trade 2018 first-rounder Josh Rosen to make room for their shiny new QB. Let's not get carried away just yet, though. It's highly unlikely a decision has been made at this point in the process, but the Cardinals have managed to convince the rest of the league that they know exactly what they're going to do. Of course, they want those reports out there. Any other team hoping to draft Murray will now need to pay the Cardinals an exorbitant price to move up to No. 1. In 2016, the Titans received the Rams' first-round pick, two second-round selections, and a third-rounder, as well as their 2017 first- and third-round picks for the No. 1 selection in the 2016 draft. If the Cardinals are planning to move forward with Rosen, a similar return would surely help in the effort to build around him.Loser: Running backsThis running back class is deep but it lacks the star power we've seen in years prior. Josh Jacobs, who many view as the top ball carrier, couldn't participate in the combine due to a groin injury. The next tier of rushers had a chance to separate from the pack, but none succeeded. Elijah Holyfield's disastrous 40-yard dash headlined his rough weekend, while intriguing prospects David Montgomery, Devin Singletary, and Damien Harris failed to show explosive athleticism. There were bright spots, but overall, it was an underwhelming combine for running back prospects.Winner: Top linebackersJoe Robbins / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe linebackers put on a show Sunday afternoon, displaying receiver-esque speed and athleticism. Five prospects ran their 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds or faster, and many more displayed smooth change-of-direction ability during position drills. With true sideline-to-sideline linebackers being a rarity in the NFL, this year's top draft hopefuls saw their stock soar at Lucas Oil Stadium. LSU's Devin White and Michigan's Devin Bush were the two standouts. The former solidified himself as one of the best overall prospects while the latter likely also secured a first-round selection. Gary Johnson, Blake Cashman, Ben Burr-Kirven, and David Long emerged from a solid second tier for teams that miss out on the first wave.Loser: Free-agent pass-rushersThis year's crop of edge rushers may be the best we've ever seen, and that was only cemented with the athletic showcases they put on at the combine. Led by the likes of Nick Bosa, Josh Allen, Montez Sweat, and Brian Burns, there are at least nine players at the position who have a chance to hear their name called in the first round. And there's an impressive amount of depth beyond that. But there's a potentially negative effect to consider here. In any other year, the number of edge defenders held off the market via the franchise tag (DeMarcus Lawrence, Jadeveon Clowney, Dee Ford) would prop up the second- and third-tier free agents at the position, creating a competition that yields larger contracts than those players could otherwise command. And while a few will certainly still cash in, it's possible the pass-rush talent available in this draft could influence teams to sit out the free-agent bidding wars if things get too wild.Winner: Wide receiversJoe Robbins / Getty Images Sport / GettyThere seemed to be a general sentiment heading into this year's combine that the wide receiver class was nothing to write home about. A few interesting names, as there always are, but not a whole lot to get excited about on Day 1 or Day 2 of the draft. That all changed after some athletic testing in Indianapolis.D.K. Metcalf, of course, was the star of the show. A ridiculous 4.33 40-yard dash highlighted his weekend and may have inspired an ascension from the late first round to a potential top-10 pick. N'Keal Harry and Hakeem Butler, two other big-bodied targets, showed more than enough athleticism to solidify their first-round status, and Miles Boykin, Emanuel Hall, Terry McLaurin, Mecole Hardman, Andy Isabella, and Parris Campbell all made themselves some money with fantastic showings. Suddenly, this appears to be a receiver class that could be three rounds deep with impact players.Loser: Jachai PoliteAn explosive, dominant pass-rusher on tape, Polite may have fallen out of the first round in Indianapolis. The former Florida defender reportedly didn't perform well during interviews, even telling reporters that multiple teams "bashed him" during the process. It only gets worse, as Polite admitted he's never watched film of himself, raising yet another red flag on his draft resume. The edge defender performed poorly in the vertical jump and 40-yard dash, and he sat out the rest of the event with an apparent hamstring injury that some scouts were skeptical about. A talented player, still, but Polite's combine was difficult to watch as it unfolded.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

NFL Mock Draft 3.0: Combine stars make big leaps
The 2018 NFL season has concluded, so it's officially time to look ahead to the 2019 draft. With the scouting combine now complete, theScore's Dane Belbeck, Daniel Wilkins, and Mike Alessandrini project the first round of selections.1. Arizona Cardinals - Kyler Murray, QB, OklahomaDespite not partaking in any drills, it's safe to say Kyler Murray was a big winner at the combine. The Oklahoma star measured larger than expected at 5-foot-10, 207 pounds, and Kim Jones of NFL Network reports that people "almost universally" believe he will be the No. 1 pick. This selection is predicated on a Josh Rosen trade, but Kliff Kingsbury won't pass up the chance to grab Murray and run the offense he covets in the pros. - Belbeck2. San Francisco 49ers - Quinnen Williams, DT, AlabamaWith Murray off the board at No. 1, John Lynch will have an enviable choice between the draft's top two defensive players. After an excellent combine, Williams is the selection here. The best defender in college football last season instantly upgrades San Francisco's defensive line next to DeForest Buckner, freeing up space for 2017 No. 3 overall pick Solomon Thomas on the edge. - Alessandrini3. New York Jets - Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio StateThe Jets are open to trading down, but any such offers become far less enticing if Bosa is still on the board at No. 3. New York has long been in search of an impact player of the edge, and the franchise will get just that in the former Ohio State star, whom many see as the best player in this class. - Wilkins4. Oakland Raiders - Josh Allen, DE, KentuckyAndy Lyons / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe old Raiders would have grabbed receiver D.K. Metcalf here after his absurd combine showing, but Jon Gruden will opt for the defensive star from Kentucky. Allen had a strong combine of his own, cementing his place among the top three defensive players in the draft, and will bring a much-needed pass rush to Oakland. - Belbeck5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Rashan Gary, DL, MichiganThe Bucs are searching for an identity on defense under new coordinator Todd Bowles, and Gary is just the prospect to provide it. The Michigan standout has inconsistent tape, but his freakish athleticism and high ceiling make him arguably the best player available. Pairing Gary alongside Vita Vea, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Gerald McCoy (if retained) would give any offensive line fits. - Alessandrini6. New York Giants - Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio StateThe Giants still seem hesitant to move on from Eli Manning, but it's long past time for a change at the quarterback position. Haskins already works through progressions like a pro and has the arm talent to make any throw on the field. This is the pick that will finally get Big Blue going back in the right direction. - Wilkins7. Jacksonville Jaguars - Clelin Ferrell, DE, ClemsonFerrell was only a limited participant at the combine, but the Clemson star's game tape is more than sufficient to warrant a top-10 selection. Some had Jacksonville taking a quarterback, but with the reported signing of Nick Foles, the Jaguars can focus on defense and take someone to help last season's struggling pass rush. - Belbeck8. Detroit Lions - Ed Oliver, DT, HoustonJohn Weast / Getty Images Sport / GettyIf Oliver is available at this juncture, the Lions will be running to the podium to select him. The interior defender’s elite athleticism and pass-rush prowess make him an instant upgrade in the center of Matt Patricia's defense next to Damon Harrison. Don't focus too much on Oliver's size - he's a stud. - Alessandrini9. Buffalo Bills - D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole MissMetcalf's ridiculous combine showing pushes him all the way into the top 10, where the Bills just can't pass up the idea of pairing his physical skill set with that of Josh Allen. Adding a receiver with Metcalf's rare combination of size and speed would go a long way toward making the most of their young quarterback's ability to push the ball downfield for big plays. - Wilkins10. Denver Broncos - Drew Lock, QB, MissouriSince Peyton Manning retired after the 2015 campaign, a quartet of quarterbacks have started at least four games for the Broncos. That's why it's reasonable to assume John Elway will still take a pivot despite trading for Joe Flacco in the offseason. The former Denver legend's search for the next great QB will see Lock make his way to the Mile High City where he can sit for a season before taking over for Flacco in 2020. - Belbeck11. Cincinnati Bengals - Devin White, LB, LSUCincinnati could stand to upgrade a number of positions, so it'll likely select the top player available. In this case, it's White. The star linebacker is simply too talented to pass up at this point, as he displays translatable speed, awareness, and coverage abilities that NFL teams desire. If the Bengals miss out on a top-tier quarterback, expect them to address the defensive side of the ball. - Alessandrini12. Green Bay Packers - Montez Sweat, OLB, Mississippi StateIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyImproving the talent around Aaron Rodgers is a must this offseason, but the Packers would be wise to capitalize on the pass-rush talent at the top of this draft first. Sweat's stock is on the rise after an incredible performance at the combine, highlighted by a 4.41 40 time that set a new record for defensive linemen. He could instantly be a major upgrade over what Clay Matthews has brought to the table over the last few seasons. - Wilkins13. Miami Dolphins - Jawaan Taylor, OT, FloridaProvided the Dolphins decline to keep starting tackle Ja'Wuan James, staying in state to nab Florida's Taylor at No. 13 makes a ton of sense. Despite being limited by a hamstring issue, the versatile Gators standout showed well at the combine and can start from Day 1 on a line that allowed the fifth-most sacks in the league last season. - Belbeck14. Atlanta Falcons - Greedy Williams, CB, LSUGeneral manager Thomas Dimitroff drafted Isaiah Oliver in the second round last year, but nabbing Greedy after a slight tumble down the board is a no-brainer. The former LSU cornerback has the size and length that head coach Dan Quinn covets at the position, and the Falcons recently released Robert Alford and Brian Poole. - Alessandrini15. Washington Redskins - Daniel Jones, QB, DukeA rookie quarterback feels like the way to go for Washington, as the money still owed to Alex Smith will make it difficult to justify starter money for a veteran. Jones has a prototypical frame and gets praise for his intangibles, having demonstrated the football IQ to compensate for anything he lacks in terms of arm talent. - Wilkins16. Carolina Panthers - Jonah Williams, OT, AlabamaJoe Robbins / Getty Images Sport / GettyWilliams just completed a solid combine, but there are still some questions as to whether he projects better as a tackle or a guard. That shouldn't deter the Panthers from taking the Alabama standout, as Carolina needs depth at both positions to help keep Cam Newton clean and open holes for Christian McCaffrey. - Belbeck17. Cleveland Browns - Christian Wilkins, DT, ClemsonFor the first time in what seems like forever, the Browns have few glaring holes on their roster heading into the offseason. This could allow the team to select Wilkins here, who is one of the premier defensive linemen in this year’s class. The interior defender would pair nicely with Myles Garrett and Larry Ogunjobi in the trenches. - Alessandrini18. Minnesota Vikings - Andre Dillard, OT, Washington StateThe Vikings desperately need to upgrade the offensive line if they hope to get the most out of the big-money Kirk Cousins signing. Dillard is a top-flight pass-protector who could immediately step into the left tackle spot and allow Riley Reiff to slide inside. - Wilkins19. Tennessee Titans - Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi StateThere probably wasn't much of a chance that Simmons would still be around for the Titans at No. 19 a month ago, but after tearing his ACL during workouts, he will likely fall down the draft board. While he won't be able to help Tennessee in 2019, his ability to pressure the pocket leaps off the page and makes him a worthwhile selection for Mike Vrabel's defense. - Belbeck20. Pittsburgh Steelers - Devin Bush, LB, MichiganJoe Robbins / Getty Images Sport / GettyBush enjoyed an excellent weekend in Indianapolis, propelling his stock into the first round. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh is desperate to upgrade the linebacker position, so the fit here makes plenty of sense. The 2018 All-American profiles as an ideal fit in the Steelers' defense, as the team's talented front five would free up space for him to make plays. - Alessandrini21. Seattle Seahawks - Brian Burns, DE, Florida StateSeattle's efforts to address the defensive side of the ball should begin with finding a pass-rusher to pair with Frank Clark. With elite athleticism, impressive length, and advanced hand usage, Burns has as much upside as any edge defender in this class. - Wilkins22. Baltimore Ravens - Marquise Brown, WR, OklahomaMarquise Brown is a perfect fit for a Ravens team that has been lacking a deep threat for years. It's impossible to watch any tape of the Oklahoma standout and not see DeSean Jackson-like potential. Brown wasn't able to participate in drills due to a foot injury, but his electric game film will make sure he's gone in the first round. Pairing him with Lamar Jackson will definitely make Baltimore must-see television. - Belbeck23. Houston Texans - Noah Fant, TE, IowaIf he wasn't completing drills with his fellow tight ends, you'd think Fant was a wide receiver based on his combine performance. The Texans drafted two players at the position last year, but it won't stop them from selecting a top-end talent in 2019. Giving Deshaun Watson another intermediate option would be a nightmare for opposing defenses. - Alessandrini24. Oakland Raiders (from CHI) - Deandre Baker, CB, GeorgiaIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe early run on pass-rushers pushes other players back, and Oakland capitalizes by taking a cornerback who could have easily come off the board much earlier. Lining up opposite Gareon Conley, Baker would give the Raiders an extremely talented tandem of young corners to help match up against high-powered passing attacks. - Wilkins25. Philadelphia Eagles - Josh Jacobs, RB, AlabamaWhile the overall running back class this year pales in comparison to 2018, Jacobs is a quality prospect worthy of a first-round selection. The explosive Alabama rusher only carried the ball 251 times in his collegiate career, making him as fresh as any top-level back in years. The Eagles have a number of options at the position, but none have Jacobs' upside. That makes this decision easy. - Belbeck26. Indianapolis Colts - Byron Murphy, CB, WashingtonThe Colts could lose impending free agent Pierre Desir next week, opening up a hole at cornerback. Murphy would be the perfect prospect to replace him, as the former Washington standout offers great size and the ability to make plays in zone coverage. Murphy is also the top player left on the board. - Alessandrini27. Oakland Raiders (from DAL) - N'Keal Harry, WR, Arizona StateJon Gruden and Mike Mayock will use their third first-round pick to address the most pressing need on the offensive side: a No. 1 receiver to replace Amari Cooper. Harry is a physical, big-bodied target with a proven ability to go up and get the ball over a defender, and his combine performance did more than enough to answer any questions about his athleticism. - Wilkins28. Los Angeles Chargers - Dexter Lawrence, DT, ClemsonIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyAt 6-foot-4, 342 pounds, Lawrence is as physically imposing a prospect as there is in this year's draft. After hammering out 36 reps of the bench press at the combine, Lawrence ran a remarkable 5.05 in the 40-yard dash. Those numbers helped to move him from a second-round projection into the back half of the first. The Chargers get an immediate run-stopper that also has the ability to put pressure on the quarterback. - Belbeck29. Kansas City Chiefs - Garrett Bradbury, C, NC StateAndy Reid loves his offensive and defensive linemen, so he'd be thrilled with this scenario. Bradbury is the premier center prospect in this class, and Kansas City could lose Mitch Morse to free agency. Protecting Patrick Mahomes and allowing him time to pick apart his opponents will be a priority for the foreseeable future. - Alessandrini30. Green Bay Packers (from NO) - T.J. Hockenson, TE, IowaGreen Bay would be incredibly fortunate to have Hockenson fall to this spot near the end of the first round. A tight end ready to make an impact both as a receiver and as a blocker upon transitioning to the NFL, he'd be a foundation piece for the new-look Packers offense under Matt LaFleur. - Wilkins31. Los Angeles Rams - Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi StateLamarcus Joyner looks to be gone in free agency, so the Rams will go for the top safety on the board with Abram out of Mississippi State. The senior was among the biggest hitters in the SEC at his position last year and should fit nicely in Wade Phillips' aggressive defense. - Belbeck32. New England Patriots - Charles Omenihu, DE, TexasBill Belichick always seems to operate with a different draft board than most coaches and general managers, which is one reason why Omenihu makes sense with the last pick of the first round. With Trey Flowers set to hit the open market, the long-armed pass-rusher profiles as an ideal long-term replacement. - AlessandriniCopyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jarrett receives franchise tag from Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, the team announced Monday.Jarrett would make $12.38 million under the one-year tag in 2019, but the team plans to continue talks regarding a long-term extension prior to the July 15 deadline."As we have said since the end of the season, getting a deal done with Grady is our priority," general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in a statement. "Applying the franchise tag to him does not change that in any way. Our aim is for Grady to be an integral part of our plan for many years to come and this allows us to extend our negotiating window."Jarrett was Atlanta's fifth-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft and has emerged as one of the league's top defensive tackles. The interior rusher accumulated a career-high six sacks and three forced fumbles in 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. He's recorded 32 sacks in the past three seasons. With the tag, Clark will earn $17.1 million in 2019.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Texans not close to extensions for Clowney, Mathieu
The Houston Texans aren't close to signing impending free agents Jadeveon Clowney and Tyrann Mathieu to long-term contracts, sources told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.Houston is expected to franchise-tag Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, to keep him off the open market. The 26-year-old edge defender is coming off a nine-sack campaign, during which he earned his third straight Pro Bowl selection.Mathieu, also 26, is more likely to hit free agency. The safety inked a one-year deal with the Texans last offseason after the Arizona Cardinals released him. He had 89 tackles and two interceptions in 16 games. The Texans have reportedly kept in contact with each player's representatives and hope to sign both.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Raiders, Broncos, Cards showing most interest in Brown
There's growing trade interest in Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, and the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Arizona Cardinals appear the most intrigued, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. The Raiders have often been mentioned as potential suitors, as they have both the draft picks (three first-round selections) and the cap space ($72 million) available to acquire such a talent.Arizona owns the first and 33rd picks in the draft and appears to be interested in expediting its rebuild, as exemplified by its retention of Patrick Peterson. The Broncos are a new name tied to Brown, but they fit the criteria as a team outside the AFC North. The Steelers won't play the AFC West again until 2022.However, Mike Klis of 9News and Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic report that sources have told them Denver is not interested in acquiring Brown.Brown is due a $2.5-million roster bonus on March 17, though Rapoport reports there is enough interest for a trade to happen before then.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Houston Texans placed the franchise tag on pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the team announced Monday."... Our goal is to continue to work with his representation on a long-term contract," general manager Brian Gaine said in a statement. "This gives us both an opportunity to continue to do so."Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, totaled 47 tackles, nine sacks, and three fumble recoveries during the 2018 campaign. The three-time Pro Bowler is listed as both a defensive end and an outside linebacker in Houston's statement. As a defensive end, he stands to earn $17.1 million on the franchise tag, while linebackers earn $15.4 million.Clowney was given an extra $1 million in December to resolve the positional pay difference on his fifth-year option, according to NFL.com's Tom Pelissero.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Dolphins engaged Redskins in Tannehill trade talks
The Miami Dolphins are shopping quarterback Ryan Tannehill and have discussed a trade with the Washington Redskins, a source told Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. The market has been quiet for the veteran of seven seasons, but the Redskins have a distinct need at quarterback. Alex Smith isn't expected to return from a broken leg in time to contribute in 2019.The Dolphins brought in Brian Flores to be their head coach and are also looking for a new quarterback.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Gore plans to keep playing, but future with Dolphins uncertain
Impending free agent Frank Gore intends to return for his 15th season in the NFL, a source told the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. However, the Miami Dolphins are uncertain whether they will retain the running back, a team source told Jackson. Gore's reportedly willing to play for another team if the Dolphins aren't interested.Gore signed a one-year, $1-million deal in March 2018, and he'll turn 36 in May. He started 14 games in Miami before suffering a sprained foot near the end of the season. He had 722 rushing yards and 124 receiving yards while splitting carries with Kenyan Drake. The running back spent 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and three with the Indianapolis Colts before joining the Dolphins.Gore is currently fourth in all-time rushing yards with 14,748. Mercedes-Benz Stadium slashes concession prices again
Concession stand prices at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be even lower this year. The Atlanta Falcons' home announced Monday that it will be dropping prices on several popular food items by 11 percent. The venue will also become the first NFL and MLS stadium to introduce a cashless transaction model during Sunday's Atlanta United home opener."Arthur Blank repeatedly challenges us to find innovative ways to further improve operations across our businesses," Steve Cannon, AMB Group CEO, said in a statement. "As we've always said, it is incumbent on us to listen and respond to our fans and we've heard that value, quality, and speed of service are incredibly important; therefore, we've again made operational adjustments that address each of these areas."Our fans are our most important influencers and we want to ensure they have the level of service they've come to expect from Mercedes-Benz Stadium."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Gruden 'very interested' in Kyler Murray
Jon Gruden may be ready for a change under center for the Oakland Raiders. Both Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock insist that Derek Carr is the team's franchise quarterback, but another signal-caller may have caught the head coach's attention."Someone in Indianapolis told me Jon Gruden is the worst poker player in the NFL," NBC's Peter King said on the "Dan Patrick Show." "He and Mike Mayock can talk all they want about Derek Carr ... but I'll tell you Jon Gruden is very interested in Kyler Murray."The Raiders currently have three first-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, including the No. 4 overall selection.Murray, the 2018 Heisman winner, is rumored to also intrigue the Arizona Cardinals, who hold the first overall pick.Oakland went 4-12 in 2018 with Carr at quarterback. Report: Jets 'undeniably the favorite' to land Le'Veon Bell
The early buzz at the NFL combine is that the New York Jets are "undeniably the favorite" to sign running back Le'Veon Bell in free agency, a high-profile agent told Connor Hughes of The Athletic. However, the Jets aren't the only team in the running, as the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to pursue Bell.New York is considering adding Tevin Coleman if it misses on Bell. The Jets apparently like Coleman's relatively low usage throughout the first four years of his career, as well as his lower price tag, according to Hughes."They won't miss on both," Hughes writes. The Jets were 26th in rushing in 2018 and have a whopping $102 million in available cap space ahead of free agency.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kurt Warner and NFL GM: Rosen worth only 3rd-round pick
After reports surfaced that the Arizona Cardinals are targeting quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 pick, questions arose regarding what the team will do with current starter Josh Rosen.Rosen could be placed on the trading block if the Cardinals are set on Murray as their new starter. On Monday, NBC's Peter King gauged the market value for the UCLA product who was selected 10th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft."I would give a three for Josh," former Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner told King.Warner wasn't the only one to weigh in on Rosen's value. King also spoke to a "renowned" NFL general manager about what Arizona could land."Probably a three," the GM said. "Not what the Cardinals would think his value is."Arizona traded third- and fifth-round picks to the Oakland Raiders during the 2018 draft to move up five slots and draft Rosen. The 22-year-old started 13 games for the Cardinals during the 2018 campaign, throwing for 2,278 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Buccaneers to place franchise tag on Donovan Smith
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will place the franchise tag on left tackle Donovan Smith before the March 5 deadline, though the two sides will continue to work toward a contract extension in the interim, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Smith hasn't missed a start in four seasons since being drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft. The franchise tag would pay Smith $14.067 million for the 2019 season and make him the fourth-highest-paid left tackle in football by annual average."I don't envision Donovan Smith being anywhere else but with the Bucs, at least for next year," general manager Jason Licht said last week at the combine.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Why Nick Foles is bound to disappoint his next team
An above-average quarterback who becomes available can prompt a Black Friday-style frenzy among NFL teams. It was true for Case Keenum last offseason, and the rumbling at your feet right now is the Nick Foles stampede in its early stages.Foles has now been set free after Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman announced during his scouting combine press conference that the team won't franchise tag the Super Bowl LII MVP. He'll be available to the highest bidder on March 11 when the negotiating window opens.Signing Foles will be tempting, and general managers who believe a quarterback is the last piece of their championship puzzle will surely pursue him aggressively. However, one thing is almost certain: giving Foles the starting-quarterback money he'll demand is a mistake waiting to happen. The buyer's remorse will be strong for the franchise that ultimately ponies up.That's because, despite everything he's done on the biggest stage, Foles is a 30-year-old who's been inconsistent throughout his career and lacks much recent experience under center. Bringing him aboard will handcuff his next employer and its roster-building plans.Getting paidIn 2018, Foles earned a $4-million base salary that ranked 20th among quarterbacks, according to Spotrac. The very lowest baseline for his next deal is the contract Keenum signed last offseason, also as a 30-year-old. Keenum dazzled as a replacement starter in 2017 while guiding the Minnesota Vikings to a division title, and then inked a two-year agreement with the Denver Broncos worth $36 million with $25 million guaranteed.Predictably, after only fleeting success prior to his breakout year with the Vikings, Keenum flopped in Denver this past season. He threw the second-most interceptions in the league (15), and now Joe Flacco will replace him.Dustin Bradford / Getty Images Sport / GettyBut until the Broncos officially move on from Keenum, he's on their roster and is scheduled to carry a $21-million cap hit in 2019. Somehow, that's only $1.8 million behind the Atlanta Falcons' Matt Ryan.Like Keenum, Foles is only a stopgap solution, and treating him as anything more won't end well. That's why this situation could get sticky fast.Good but not greatSome will point to Foles' playoff heroics and heap praise on the veteran's poise in clutch situations. Postseason wins and the leadership skills required in January carry weight. We can even minimize the influence of Doug Pederson's offensive scheming over the past two seasons, and of Chip Kelly's during Foles' Pro Bowl campaign in 2013.Go ahead. Do all that and ignore Foles' stretches of merely passable play, like the seven regular-season appearances in 2017 when his poor deep passing put him firmly in the league’s cellar:

Impending free-agent quarterback Nick Foles is expected to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars once free agency opens on March 13, sources told Philly.com's Les Bowen. The Jaguars appear to be the sole team expressing interest in the free agent and are working on the details of a contract that could come in below market value for starting quarterbacks, Bowen added. The Philadelphia Eagles announced last week they would not use the franchise tag on the former Super Bowl MVP.The Jaguars are expected to release incumbent starter Blake Bortles once they sign Foles, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.Jacksonville went 5-11 last season after competing in the AFC title game the year prior.Foles threw for 1,413 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions in five starts during the 2018 campaign. He holds a 4-1 record in the postseason as a starter with the Eagles and led the team to a 6-2 record in relief of Carson Wentz over the past two seasons. The Jaguars hired John DeFilippo to be their offensive coordinator in January. He previously served as Foles' quarterbacks coach during Philadelphia's Super Bowl winning season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
