Giants sign Golladay to reported 4-year, $72M deal
The top free-agent wide receiver is off the market, as Kenny Golladay signed with the New York Giants, the team announced Saturday.Golladay will receive a four-year, $72-million contract that could reach $76 million, and it includes $40-million guaranteed, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. The deal puts him just outside of the top five highest-payed players at his position in average annual value.A number of suitors were pursuing the 27-year-old. He received a contract offer from the Cincinnati Bengals and scheduled visits with the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens.Golladay spent the first four years of his career with the Detroit Lions, who surprisingly didn't use the franchise tag on him last month. He battled a hip injury last season, but the wideout led the NFL with 11 receiving touchdowns in 2019 to go along with 65 catches and 1,190 yards. The 2017 third-round pick isn't an elite athlete, but he specializes in contested catches and is effective in the red zone.Golladay joins a Giants team that prioritized adding weapons for quarterback Daniel Jones this offseason. The club's offense already features Saquon Barkley, Darius Slayton, Evan Engram, and Sterling Shepard.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Saints docked 2022 pick for COVID-19 violations, Raiders fined
The New Orleans Saints will forfeit their sixth-round pick in 2022 and be fined $700,000 for violating the NFL's COVID-19 protocols during the 2020 season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Las Vegas Raiders were also fined $800,000, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett. The news comes shortly after league spokesman Brian McCarthy told Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith that the Saints and Raiders won't be stripped of 2021 draft selections for not adhering to the protocols.Multiple reports surfaced during the season stating that both clubs would forfeit picks for failing to follow the league's policies. Those reports indicated the league hit Vegas with a fine and stripped it of a sixth-round pick for multiple health and safety violations. The Saints also committed several violations that reportedly garnered an initial $500,000 penalty and the loss of a seventh-round selection. But the league announced the full 2021 draft order Friday, and both teams' original slots are unchanged. It appears the Saints and Raiders appealed their respective punishments and the clubs' picks for this April were returned, according to Smith. The league decided to hand New Orleans an additional penalty, though McCarthy didn't provide an official explanation for that decision. Two teams will forfeit picks this year. The New England Patriots are losing a third-round selection for filming the Cincinnati Bengals' sideline, while the Minnesota Vikings are giving up a seventh-rounder due to a salary-cap violation.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dolphins waive Wilson after OT reportedly refused help to get life on track
The Miami Dolphins waived offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson less than two weeks after agreeing to acquire him from the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Saturday.Wilson refused the Dolphins' efforts to help him get his life back on track while continuing the behavior that caused Tennessee to give up on the 29th overall pick in 2020, a league source told Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. The towering lineman endured a tumultuous rookie campaign in which he was suspended for violating team rules, was arrested for DUI, and played just three snaps. After being traded, Wilson showed up late for his physical with Miami and skipped two optional workouts he had previously committed to attend, a source told Beasley.A series of videos were briefly posted on the 22-year-old's Instagram account Friday, including what appeared to be him smoking and dancing shirtless on a car.Releasing Wilson won't cost the Dolphins anything in 2021, as all of his salary guarantees were already voided. He enjoyed his best pro campaign two years ago, leading the league with six interceptions while adding 11 pass breakups.Harris didn't record a single pick in 2020 but still posted a career-high 104 tackles. The Seattle Seahawks are re-signing running back Chris Carson to a two-year deal worth up to $14.6 million, a source told ESPN's Field Yates.Carson's contract contains a voidable third year, Yates reports. The deal provides the Seahawks with some breathing room under the salary cap. He's guaranteed $5.5 million next season and has a chance to earn up to $6.9 million in 2021, a source told The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta. The New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, and New England Patriots were among notable suitors, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.Carson has led the way for Seattle's running game for much of his tenure. A seventh-round selection in the 2017 draft, Carson has eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark twice in four seasons. He's averaged 4.6 yards per carry over his career, so the Seahawks are retaining a consistent chain-mover. Report: Teams still interested in Watson, monitoring sexual assault allegations
Multiple NFL teams remain extremely interested in acquiring Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and are monitoring the allegations of sexual assault in lawsuits filed against him this week, sources told Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle. The Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, and Denver Broncos are among the clubs still monitoring Watson's situation.Four more women filed lawsuits Thursday night alleging that Watson had sexually assaulted them, bringing the total to seven women. The women who sued Thursday each worked in a spa or as a massage therapist. In their lawsuits, they claim that Watson exposed himself, touched them with his penis, or forcibly kissed them.Tony Buzbee, the lawyer representing all the women, said Friday that he has spoken to 22 women and will file five more cases against Watson. Buzbee also said that Watson's "conduct happened as recently as this month," after he'd reached out to Watson's lawyer about the allegations, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop. The NFL noted Thursday, after the first three lawsuits were filed, that the situation is being reviewed under the league's personal conduct policy. The quarterback released a statement Tuesday saying that he looks forward to clearing his name. Goff has high hopes for Lions: I don't see it as a rebuild at all
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff believes his new team is still aiming to compete. The Lions acquired Goff earlier in the offseason in a trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford's departure and a plethora of other personnel changes have fueled questions as to whether Detroit has folded on the 2021 season, but Goff doesn't think that's the case."It's not a rebuild at all, to be honest," Goff said Friday, according to the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett. "I know you guys are going to throw that word around. I don't see it as that at all. I think it takes the right pieces to win, but it can happen in one offseason."It's going to take a lot of hard work, and that's the challenge that I think I'm most excited for is this challenge of bringing this team and bringing this city and bringing this culture back to what it should be."Lions general manager Brad Holmes said he expects Goff to be the starting quarterback in 2021, but he didn't rule out taking a signal-caller with the seventh overall pick in this year's draft."When you're picking inside the top 10, you're not in a position to ignore any position. You're just not," Holmes said. "So the quarterback position is very important, and if the value's there and if the right guy's there, then you know he'd be in every consideration."Goff enjoyed a successful stint with Los Angeles: The Rams made the postseason in each of the last three seasons with the 2016 No. 1 overall pick under center. The Lions finished 5-11 in 2020 and last made the playoffs in 2016.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals to release 8-time Pro Bowler Atkins
The Cincinnati Bengals are cutting eight-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Geno Atkins, head coach Zac Taylor said Friday, according to ESPN's Ben Baby. The move saves the Bengals $11.7 million and clears $9.5 million off the cap while absorbing $5.2 million in dead money to account for a pre-paid signing bonus.Atkins spent 11 seasons in Cincinnati and was perennially one of the NFL's top interior defensive linemen over that time. A reduced role last campaign foreshadowed Atkins' unceremonious departure, finishing 2020 with just one tackle across eight appearances. The Bengals will move forward with D.J. Reader and Larry Ogunjobi anchoring the middle of their defensive line while Trey Hendrickson and Sam Hubbard flank them on the edges. Ogunjobi and Hendrickson joined Cincinnati in free agency, while Reader signed as a free agent last year.Atkins, meanwhile, will look to latch with a new team after registering 100 tackles for a loss and 75.5 sacks over 161 career contests with the Bengals. Eagles GM: Ertz trade has to 'make sense for both sides'
The Philadelphia Eagles are in no rush to trade tight end Zach Ertz.General manager Howie Roseman said Thursday the Eagles won't make a deal unless they get a haul that matches their perception of the tight end."For us to trade any player, it’s gotta make sense for both sides. None of us had the year we wanted to have last year, but that doesn’t define us. We know who he is on and off the field and we value that," Roseman said while speaking to the media, including NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Ertz's name has been popping up in trade rumors throughout the offseason. Numerous teams have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring him, but a serious suitor hasn't emerged yet.The 30-year-old has spent his entire career in Philadelphia since becoming a second-round pick in 2013. He's been a consistent pass-catcher over the middle for much of his Eagles tenure.Ertz's resume includes three Pro Bowl selections and six seasons with 700-plus receiving yards. However, his production has declined recently, and fellow tight end Dallas Goedert is emerging in Philadelphia. Ertz posted career lows across the board in 2020, recording just 335 receiving yards and one touchdown. The Eagles have been busy on the trade front this offseason, already shipping Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. Roseman described that move as a "win-win" for both sides, according to Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The New York Jets have been in conversation with free-agent wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Smith-Schuster hit the market after four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was expected to be a coveted commodity but has seemingly fallen victim to a saturated receiver market and a lower salary cap. The Steelers haven't closed the door on re-signing him, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The Jets have already added one marquee offensive weapon in free agency, landing former Tennessee Titans wideout Corey Davis on a three-year contract. New York is looking to improve an offense that ranked last in yards and points last season.Smith-Schuster had 97 receptions for 831 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020 for a Steelers offense that relied on quick passes and yards after the catch. He posted 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns in 2018 as the No. 2 receiver to Antonio Brown.A move to the Jets would reunite Smith-Schuster with his college quarterback, Sam Darnold.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Patrick Chung announces retirement
Longtime New England Patriots defensive back Patrick Chung announced his retirement Thursday."I want to say thank you to the Patriots organization, my family, my fans, coaches, just everyone," Chung wrote on Instagram. "I'm in tears writing this but I've decided to hang up the cleats. Bill (Belichick), Mr. (Robert) Kraft, thank you for giving me the opportunity to play for your team for 11 years. I love you."He continued: "Bill, for teaching me life on and off the field, I will not forget that. To my teammates, trainers, EQ team, video guys, meal room employees, janitors, etc., I love you guys and ladies. Thank you for being the rock to the organization. For cleaning up, feeding, taking care of me for 11 years. You will forever be family."But it's time to start a new life. Patriot until I die! Love you all."Chung joined the Patriots as a 2009 second-round pick out of Oregon. He spent 10 seasons with New England and had a one-year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. Chung opted out of the 2020 campaign. The 33-year-old defensive back won three Super Bowls with the Patriots and amassed 773 career tackles along with 11 interceptions.Chung was an indispensable cog in New England's latest dynasty, often getting matched up against tight ends in the passing game. His successful tenure came after a disappointing first stint, and head coach Bill Belichick eventually acknowledged he misused Chung the first time around. The Patriots signed Jalen Mills to a four-year contract at the beginning of free agency, perhaps knowing that Chung was getting ready to hang up his cleats.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lindsay becomes free agent after agreeing to part ways with Broncos
The Denver Broncos and running back Phillip Lindsay mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced Thursday. The Broncos originally applied a tender to Lindsay, who was a restricted free agent, but the two sides decided that rescinding the offer was the best route moving forward. Lindsay can now sign with any team."After great conversations with the Broncos, it's been mutually decided that rescinding the RFA tender is best for Phillip Lindsay and the team. It's been a great three years in Denver," Lindsay's agent Mike McCartney said. "Nothing beats seeing (Mile High Stadium) rocking as it did when (No.) 30 broke a long run."Lindsay entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and instantly became the primary rusher in Denver's backfield. The tailback accumulated 1,037 yards in his rookie campaign, earning a Pro Bowl nod along the way. He followed his rookie year with another 1,000-yard season in 2019.His production declined last year with the offseason addition of Melvin Gordon. Lindsay was limited to just 11 games, starting eight, and rushed for 502 yards. Gordon nearly doubled Lindsay's production in his first season with the Broncos, finishing with 986 yards.Lindsay joins a free-agent group of running backs that includes Chris Carson, Leonard Fournette, and Kenyan Drake, among others.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. He was sacked a league-high 48 times in 2019 and career-high 51 times in 2018."We've got to get better. I've got to get better," Wilson said.Jackson didn't allow a sack in 16 games in 2020. Report: Vikings signing Patrick Peterson to 1-year, $10M deal
The Minnesota Vikings are signing cornerback Patrick Peterson to a one-year, $10-million deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Peterson spent the first 10 years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, putting together a Hall of Fame-caliber resume that included eight straight Pro Bowl appearances (2011 to 2018), three first-team All-Pro nods, and a nomination to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade team. However, the 30-year-old struggled to play up to his usual standards over the last two seasons. Report: Golladay in talks with Giants, has offer from Bengals
The New York Giants are in talks with free-agent receiver Kenny Golladay and are expected to bring the former Detroit Lion in for a visit, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, citing a source.A visit and physical may be necessary before the two sides reach an agreement, as Golladay missed 11 games in 2020 due to a hip injury. Other teams remain interested in the four-year vet, with the Cincinnati Bengals already having an offer on the table, according to ESPN's Dianna Russini.Golladay is considered the market's top wideout after reaching 3,068 yards and 21 touchdowns across his four seasons in Detroit. Before his injury-plagued 2020, the 27-year-old's 1,190 yards and 11 touchdowns helped him reach the Pro Bowl in 2019.The Giants could sorely use a No. 1 receiver after ranking 29th in the league in passing yards in 2020, averaging less than 200 yards through the air per game. Adding a player of Golladay's caliber would help quarterback Daniel Jones develop as he enters his third campaign and would also move fellow wideouts Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard down the depth chart into more comfortable roles. New York has also agreed to a deal with speed threat John Ross. The Bengals also need to improve a passing game that ranked 27th last season. Quarterback Joe Burrow will be entering his sophomore year and coming off of a torn ACL. The 24-year-old has promising young pass-catchers Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins in tow, but longtime Bengal A.J. Green signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. Burrow and co. could benefit from a veteran presence in the offense. The receiver market was slow to develop during the legal tampering period of free agency, with only Marvin Jones, Corey Davis, and Green among the big names finding deals.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. A few teams have called the Jacksonville Jaguars to ask about quarterback Gardner Minshew, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Jaguars are widely expected to use the No. 1 overall pick on former Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, making Minshew's future with the team uncertain. The former sixth-round pick appeared in 14 games (12 starts) as a rookie in 2019, becoming a cult figure amid a strong statistical season. However, Minshew only managed to lead Jacksonville to one win.Minshew could be an attractive option for teams due to the fact he's set to earn base salaries of just $850,000 this year and $965,000 next year, per Spotrac.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc.
