Report: Bears' offer for Wilson included 3 first-round picks
It appears the Chicago Bears' "aggressive" offer to the Seattle Seahawks for Russel Wilson may have been an unprecedented one.Chicago's package for a potential Wilson trade included three first-round picks, a third-rounder, and two starters, a source close to the team told national radio host Dan Patrick. The offer interested Seattle, but the decision to decline was made by head coach Pete Carroll rather than general manager John Schneider, Patrick adds. The source didn't know the starters included in the proposal.Wilson hasn't requested a trade from the Seahawks, but he's gone public this offseason about his displeasure with the number of hits he's taken behind his offensive line and not being involved in team decisions. In February, the star quarterback's agent said his client would waive his no-trade clause for the Bears, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, or Las Vegas Raiders.Chicago quickly pivoted following the rebuffed offer, signing Andy Dalton to a one-year deal Tuesday. However, general manager Ryan Pace may not be finished attempting to upgrade the quarterback position.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Seahawks rebuffed Bears' 'very aggressive' Wilson pursuit
The Chicago Bears made a "very aggressive pursuit" of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson but were told the Seahawks won't trade him at this time, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.Chicago reportedly pivoted and agreed to a one-year deal with Andy Dalton on Tuesday.Wilson has not requested a trade from the Seahawks, but he has gone public this offseason about his displeasure with both the number of hits he's taken behind his offensive line and not being involved in team decisions.Wilson's agent, Mark Rodgers, said in late February that Wilson would waive his no-trade clause for the Bears, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, or Las Vegas Raiders. The Bears appear ready to move on from the Mitch Trubisky-Nick Foles quarterback tandem that resulted in a second consecutive 8-8 finish in 2020. Trubisky started nine of those games and a wild-card playoff contest in which the offense scored nine points in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. Report: Bears to add Dalton on 1-year, $10M deal
The Chicago Bears are set to sign quarterback Andy Dalton to a one-year, $10-million contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The veteran will have a chance to obtain another $3 million through incentives.Dalton will join the Bears after spending the 2020 season with the Dallas Cowboys. He started 11 games after replacing an injured Dak Prescott and finished his campaign with 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions.Previously, Dalton started 133 games for the Cincinnati Bengals, taking them to the playoffs five times in nine years. Cincinnati moved on from him last year once it selected Joe Burrow first overall in the draft. The Bears scooped up Dalton after scouring the market for quarterback help. They went back and forth between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles in 2020, and both general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy acknowledged after the season that Chicago needed better quarterback play. Foles remains under contract with the Bears, while Trubisky is a free agent.Dalton has provided stability in the past, but the 33-year-old has never reached star status. He's thrown 30 touchdowns or more in just one season, and he's 0-4 as a starter in the playoffs. He's also only finished one campaign with a passer rating above 92.The Bears reached the postseason for the second time in three years last season, but offensive issues capped their upside. Chicago has finished six of the last seven campaigns outside the top 20 in points per game, and the club ranked 21st in yards the one year its offense did put more points on the board. The Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers also pursued Dalton in free agency, according to NFL Network's Michael Silver.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Winston returning to Saints on 1-year deal reportedly worth up to $12M
The New Orleans Saints and Jameis Winston have agreed to a deal for the free-agent quarterback to return to the team, the franchise announced Monday.Winston will ink a one-year contract worth up to $12 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The contract figures to be heavily incentivized, as New Orleans remained $10 million over the salary cap entering the day.Winston was signed to back up Drew Brees this past season but sat behind Taysom Hill when Brees went down with an injury. Both passers should compete for the starting job following Brees' retirement on Sunday.Since the end of the season, Saints head coach Sean Payton has said he'd hoped to re-sign Winston. The former No. 1 overall pick spent his first five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he set franchise passing records but also struggled mightily with turnovers and failed to lead the team to the postseason.Winston appeared in four games and threw just 11 passes with New Orleans. The 27-year-old stepped into the Saints' divisional playoff game against the Bucs and threw a 56-yard touchdown pass on a trick play.Hill started the four regular-season games Brees missed due to injury, and while he led New Orleans to a 3-1 record in those games, he failed to firmly cement himself as the franchise's future answer at quarterback.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Patriots kick off legal tampering period with major FA splashes
Bill Belichick apparently wasn't pleased with his first losing season since 2000.The New England Patriots - not usually aggressive in free agency - made several splashes to kick off the NFL's legal tampering period Monday.Belichick began the day by agreeing to terms with former Tennessee Titans tight end Jonnu Smith on a four-year, $50-million contract. The two will front a receiving corps that didn't feature anyone who went over 800 yards or 60 receptions in 2020.The AFC East club also continued to bolster its defensive line by adding Henry Anderson, who inked a two-year deal.Despite the new league year not starting yet, New England will have spent its most guaranteed money on free agents in any offseason over the last decade, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Monday's moves come shortly after the Patriots re-signed quarterback Cam Newton and agreed to two trades. New England acquired Trent Brown from the Las Vegas Raiders last week and then sent Marcus Cannon to the Houston Texans this past weekend.Belichick and the Patriots are expected to remain aggressive during the free-agency period as they look to rebound from a 7-9 campaign.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc.
